- Yusuf Islam (born Steven Demetre Georgiou on 21 July 1948), best known by his former stage name Cat Stevens, is a British musician of Greek Cypriot and Swedish ancestry. He is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, educator, philanthropist and prominent convert to Islam.
As Cat Stevens, he sold over 60 million albums around the world since the late 1960s. His albums Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were both certified as Triple Platinum by the RIAA in the United States; his album Catch Bull at Four sold half a million copies in the first two weeks of release alone, and was Billboard's number-one LP for three consecutive weeks. His songwriting has also earned him two ASCAP songwriting awards in consecutive years, for "The First Cut Is the Deepest," which has been a hit single for four different artists, and has been instrumental for others in establishing their musical careers.
Stevens converted to Islam at the height of his fame in 1977. The following year, he adopted his Muslim name Yusuf Islam, sold all his instruments and awards for charity,[citation needed] and left his music career to devote himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community. He has been given several awards for his work in promoting peace in the world, including 2003's World Award,the 2004 Man for Peace award, and the 2007 Mediterranean Prize for Peace. In 2006, he returned to pop music, with his first album of new pop songs in 28 years, entitled An Other Cup.
He lives with his wife and children in London, and spends part of each year in Dubai.

I remember age 14 painting my whole ceiling bright yellow and then painting the black outline of his face and beard, I pronounced my shahada the same time as him which I had no knowledge of until I read the good news in the newspaper. He was the only person that I could relate to in my youth, the name Yusuf (after the Prophet peace be upon him) is to his credit in that he is MashAllah a beautiful person who sings and plays such meaningful music to reach people's hearts and minds especially when as a teen it seemed we were all alone in the darkness, Cat Stevens lit the way for us, as his way was being lit by Allah Almighty for him,May Allah be pleased with his works, amen. peace and thank you.

Bought all those wonderful albums in the 70s..Wore out "Foreigner" 4 or 5 times. "Foreigner Suite" blew me away..Played it endlessly.
I remember this camp in the berkshire hills of Massachusetts that was so beautiful called camp holy cross..it was on a huge part of land and settled on a lake..every morning the bell rang and the first ones to the flagpole ate breakfast first..then there was mass in a cabin that ill never forget the subtle beauty..the father dressed in regular clothes and this was the early 70's..mass wasnt very long because its hard to hold a childsattention for an hour so it was like a 20 minute mass..a little preaching and then every mass before host the music came on..morning has broken..the suns morning rays shining through the cabin / church windows..wow..the most beautiful place ive ever been and the song thatci just had to know who it was so i asked..and the father who had his own little cabin and you rarely saw looked at me with a smile and said..his name is cat stevens and your the first camper to ever ask me..i was about 7 or 8 and he gave me the record at the end of summer and its a memory that can only come from the heavens..if i were a painter it'd be painted at the top of every church in the world..but i wasnt a painter..i listened and right away i decided music and it was cat stevens song morning has broken that i can blame..that camp is still there..i drove by andthe father was sitting at the front entrance where his cabin was reading..i pulled in and he looked at me..we smiled at each other and without a word i pulled away and knew that camp would be there forever becauseit is truly a piece of heaven!!!

Its interesting how he worked in the family business as a kid. He persuaded his dad to buy him his first guitar. Leaving the music industry was really sad...I could not understand it back when I followed his music in the 70's...so much musical gifts...it did not feel good...

I do not ubderstand how an intelligent person like him could sing love praises and compose songs dedicated to women eventually got involved in a religion that actually dispises and negates females to a second class human being. I mean no malice to anyone of any faith, but if a "religion" is truly one of peace and love; why would the believers in that religion kill or attempt to kill fellow believers? Religion is the interpretation by man of God's will to bring us "spiritually" back to him and when men try to interpret God's will for our spirituality then invariably men mess it up for their own personal interests. Religions are given to us by men, spirituality is given to us by God/Allah. More people have been killed in the name of religion than for almost any other reason. Islam, Christianity and Judaism are not evil. Religion can only become evil when man is the evil element in this world. Many young people may not realize this, but until the late 1990s, the open borders of the West was not widely known in the Muslim world (because there was no internet and the idea of a hostile people being hosted by the target culture was/is unthinkable in that part of the world), and only the relatively educated people from that part of the world were here, and they hide their customs and viewpoints, which were incompatible for an open, Liberal society with civil liberties, etc.

New Age nonsense, like crystals and energy photos, were in vogue in the 1970s/1980s, and a sanitized, Western marketed, false version of Steven's new 'religion' was not incompatible with New Age nonsense.
Of course, the people of the West have now been fully bloodied and exposed into this intolerant, savage invasion. Cognitive dissonance is now necessary to enjoy Steven's music---or is it; in reality, the commercialized, decadence of the West in the late-20th Century created a spiritual/intellectual vacuum from which any Mideiveil religion can fill.

I commend you on your efforts to pursue God for peace, Mr. Cat Stevens, but if you really want PEACE why do you follow a Book whose deity demands the destruction of every human being that refuses to become Islamic, by murder and oppression, where it subjugates its woman as chattel and second rate citizens, with rampant implementation of genital mutilation.
