this train reaches mumbai cstm by 1015am, then it leaves cstm by 5 pm . same timings since the 1980s or so so, since 1980 to today, what kind of job does one do where one can stay in pune but catch this train to come to work in mumbai daily after 1030am and still leave work by 430pm in order to catch this 5pm train? RBI officers and stock market brokers in dalal street come to my mind
Indrayani train timings are such that one can catch the train in Mumbai early morning, reach Pune and do a 9am-5pm job in Pune and again come back to Mumbai at night. many people did it in the 1990s-2000s and some are still doing it even today.

on a separate note, this train is a perfect model for VB metro train between Mumbai and Pune. infact it can do two trips per day between Mumbai and Pune if properly scheduled. current rake of deccan Queen runs 3 hours each trip ie 6 hours in total and remains idle for rest of the time. no rake sharing done either. indrayani rake is used for Mumbai --> Pune and then Pune --> solapur and again Solapur --> Pune and finally Pune --> Mumbai, all in the same day, 7 days a week. even Deccan Express rake is shared ( interchanged) with Mumbai Madgaon express
The mountain division past Khandala is exciting to watch. I get the idea there is a convenient way to by pass a lot of that with a big tunnel line that would diverge there. Strangely, someone has laid some never-used track with concrete ties there, but it breaks for the road to a new upscale development. If it's possible to turn off there, a much shorter (but not necessarily flatter) route to CSMT could be achieved, meeting up with the Konkan Rwy. at a wye-configured junction in a place labeled as Vadkhal in Google Earth. (The long bay tunnel discussed in the comment written by me earlier departs from Mumbai running between the fancy old hotel and the Gateway of India (Colaba) - as labeled in Google Earth - at a heading of about 138.9 degrees, all the way across the water. As it turns out (I forget what I draw sometimes) it goes all the way through Mumbai running south from the two stations under fairly wide streets - save one broader-curve shortcut, which isn't occupied at this point. I have the unbroad version drawn with a centerline radius of 500 feet (about 152 meters) a real screecher, but at least it stays under the road.
You missed that scenic kp water falls which lies on the UP track beacuse your train was put on middle track after khandala... Does it goes through middle track every day ? I frequently take pragati expresss which always goes through UP track .. on 2nd july i will be taking deccan queen hopefully i may witness KL water falls this monsoon..if lucky enough
Iss train ko agar WAP7 lagayenge aur 130 may bhagayenge toh yeh train kabhi late nahi hogi.Vaisebhi yeh train Pune-Lonavala aur Karjat-Badlapur stretchme 100-110 kmph.may bhagti hai,baki sab toh mashallah, subhanallah.
Wow but 37mph ain't too impressive. (though at Kahdk-Kasarwadii you were really flying) I believe India should build a cross-bay tunnel connecting both Churchgate and Shivaji stations to the Pune and Konkan lines both. It's still possible to trace a path for a 4-down-to-2-track tunnel running from new underground platforms at the existing stations in Mumbai down to the water - at least as it stands with Google Earth's latest imagery. (It's something the government transportation authority should be intent on preserving.) It would speed it up an awful lot. India has great railroading and engineering traditions. I don't think they should rely on international consultants to call the shots with passenger rail development. Look what they did in California! Texas ...and England, EVEN England. They are crooks and they are anti-rail.
