Winter spearfishing escape to the Mediterranean sea - searching for sea bass

  • My wife bought me some cheap flights for Christmas to go spearfishing somewhere in Europe for a weekend. I hadn't been diving for a few months due to the terrible weather in the UK in November and December. £63 return flights and I was off to one of the most challenging places to fish in Europe. We were targeting sea bass (spigola) and hoping for some gilt head sea bream (orata) along with the usual fish such as sargo, mullet & snappers. Many thanks to Giuliano for hosting me again as well as Jacapo & Giuseppe for welcoming me along for the trip.

    Thank you so much for the variety of experience you portray in your videos, where you show the reality most of us live. I get tired sometimes of watching the super Spearo vids of ridiculously huge catches (which you also have had). Days with no fish, frustrations etc, with the occasional delicious catch, are what most of us live and it's nice to see those more 'average' catches (that I can relate to) still treated with the respect they too deserve. You are the best inspiration on the web for any spearfisherman Daniel!!

      Thanks Philip. I do enjoy shooting big fish every now and then but diving in many different countries has shown me this isn’t all there is to spearfishing. Enjoying the process and having fun is what it’s all about.

    I don't want to say something, you are the expert. But my first two dives in the mediterranean by Chalkiriki, Greece was similar dark and dirty. It was the third day, and I had given up secretly, when we got so clear and calm water, that I completely fell in love with freediving. If that day didn't happen, I wouldn't have ever get to the sea in my life. Would have choosen mountains. 😅😂

  • @clementjavano2706
    @clementjavano2706 4 роки тому

    Nice video ! Indeed the Mediterranean is such a hard place to spearfish. The main problem is that in summertime, spearfishing becomes VERY popular and you can see speargun from 6am to 9pm. Fishes are then educated and very scared. It requires a lot of skills and apnea to be an efficient fisherman in there. But like you said.. it's a challenge !!!

    @SazParts 4 роки тому

    question, at 10:15 shouldnt you be worried about disturbing and eel in the rocks? Usually eels follow octopie so there could be a chance that one was near by since the mediteranean has a ton of them, just wondering since i got to see both an eel and an octopus up close, and they were realatively near each other.

    How come you keep your O ring on your flopper when your diving?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  4 роки тому

      Stops it moving around and scaring the fish away. Very common practice with Mediterranean spearfishers.

    all other seas - carribean, pacific, indian etc are genuinly easy to hunt fish, especially with a solid set of lungs. the med is so so different. the fish will never get close to you, if youve learned in the med, you will be able to shoot 30kg mackerals with no difficulty, or any other for that matter, its hard to say the other way round though, someone who dives in australia their whole life for example, shooting massive fish will always struggle in med

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  4 роки тому

      It is indeed very different. I talked to Jacopo who dived in Australia a few years ago. He said the fish are bigger but still not easy to shoot a prized fish. Something to eat, easy yes but not for a prized fish equivalent of a grouper or dentex etc.

    • @CoşanGülaçar
      @CoşanGülaçar 4 роки тому

      Daniel Mann of course, but then it’s all relative I guess. But I’d rather have my ‘eating’ fish the size of my flippers each time than a hand sized sargoz

    There is few of us left Giorgio D and maybe couple guys from east. They know how to ambush the fish, personally been hunting them for decades, you need short speargun below 75 cm and good position. All kinds of weather but best is stormy conditions with no visibility, general you need to think as predator to catch a predator thats the only RULE and couple of meters of water.

      Long enough to shoot the occasional fish 🤷‍♂️

    Your wet suit don’t have pad for loading speargun? Is ok?

    • @DanielMann

    I really like your videos Daniel, reminds me of my two trips to greece when i where a teenager when me & friend whent shallow water spear fishing. I'm wounder if you like fishing with rod n Reel aswell? Regardless "skitfiske" to you (shitty fishing in Swedish, more or less equal to the "break a legg" for actors.)

    Hey Daniel, how do you find the riffe euro traveler ? Do you have the 90 or 120 ?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  4 роки тому

      I have the 90. Bit heavy due to the stainless steel rods in the middle. Changing them out for carbon fibre.

      @@DanielMann Good idea. Do you think it's got enough power ? Would you consider adding a roller ?

    • @Tarantiboy
      @Tarantiboy 4 роки тому

      Also I heard someone having problem with shaft bending at the connection point on minor fish (5/8kg).No issues in that part for you ?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  4 роки тому

      @@Tarantiboy Loads of power with a single band. I've shot some of my biggest fish with single banded guns. It's not designed as a roller and slapping a kit on the side would make for a very ugly bulky gun. Never shot anything big with it so can't comment on the shaft integrity. However `I have a mate who shot a 20lb snapper in NZ with with 120 traveller no issues.
