Back in the early 1990s, I laced one of my pine trees, (by the side of the main road), with 255 individually wired red LEDs, in random 3D spatial positioning. I wrote some software on an HP PC to initially track the 3D co-ordinates of each LED, (as it was the controller), by placing a camera in vaguely orthogonal positions, then informing the software exactly what those positions were. It could then present crude 3D spatial volumetric Christmas-related images to the passing drivers at night.
