This is intended as a non-monetized parody of the amazing Aesop Rock, using the official instrumental track of his song “Rings.” Aes has been one of my favorite rappers for a few years now, and I wanted to pay homage with a cover that is silly and dumb and in no way intends to diminish the skill of the master himself. Hopefully people will see this as being all in good fun! It was a challenge I gave myself to not only attempt to cover this great song but also do so in one take (plus some additional backing tracks, a scratch intro and a spoken outro), all while doing a silly caricatured impression of his look and his sound, which I haven’t seen anyone else attempt. I plan to also do one of “Lotta Years” because the slower delivery will hopefully allow me to do an impression of all the interesting vocal inflections that is characteristic of Aesop that I didn’t quite capture in this song, as I’m still working on this impression.
I love that this song is even more relatable for me since I make a living as an artist and kinda see music as something I regret not pursuing as much as my visual art. I have dozens and dozens of unfinished beats and songs in the works, and finishing songs is much harder than starting them. But I hope to change that and make more music and do more covers and impressions soon! One of my favorite parts of this song is that the second verse is an exact replica of the cadences of the first verse. That's really hard to do while also constructing rhyme patterns and telling a story, not to mention giving a killer delivery with strong enunciation, melody and vocal inflections!
