PANORAMA EPHEMERA (made by Rick Prelinger, 2004, 89:35 min., color and black and white) is composed of sequences drawn from a wide variety of ephemeral (industrial, advertising, educational and amateur) films, touring conflicted North American landscapes. The films' often-skewed visions reconstruct a history filled with horror and hope, unreeling in familiar and unexpected ways. PANORAMA EPHEME...

    Why is this film a bit darker?

    • @prelingerarchives4554
      @prelingerarchives4554 27 днів тому

      Not quite sure what you mean. The original film is indeed a little darker than other home movies, but that's because it was underexposed by the person who shot it. We try not to distort the appearance of a film by over-brightening. Some of it (especially later on) is better exposed.

    Lets count the number of burger joints that have been on that very corner, White Castle, and now The Habit. I cant recall the others that have come and gone, maybe a Burger King too. It's a black hole for burger points.

    Here's a fact. If you were to travel back in time to 1952 and you brought your Iphone there with you, it wouldn't work anymore because there was no wifi around in that time. it would turn into a useless piece of plastic. So you'd have to just go with the flow.

    Everything is great through the lens of the past. I used to go to Wilson High School just down the road from the Circle Drive-in back in the late 80's. In eight grade, I sat in a eucalyptus tree looking over the wall and watched Thief of Hearts at that drive in. I had a couple of girlfriends in that area off of PCH. I had a friend who lived a couple doors up from Tommy's Burger on Ximeno and Anaheim, and he would take take us out on his boat at the Marina Stadium where I learned to water ski. The 50's looked nice, but the 80's was pretty nice as well. I'm sure 30 years from now someone will say how great it was in 2023.

    Intellectually, of course, one knows about inflation and so forth, but still, that menu made my jaw drop. You could get a burger, fries and a drink for less than fifty cents! I mean, holy crap; these days I'd consider it a steal if I got all that for ten bucks.

    I hate it when people say I wouldn’t survive in the 50s because of my autism. Bruh they wouldn’t even notice me as having an illness. People get bullied for being different all the time. The cost of living would be easier and talking to women would be easier because back then they didn’t assume every man was a creep. I will one day travel back and live a better life in the 50s then now.

    I found a huge ad for the Grand Opening of Beany's in Long Beach in the October 23, 1952 Long Beach Press Telegram. I've typed the main parts of the ad below. The ad also shows a drawing of the Beany's sign, with a note saying "Copyright - Bob Clampett," who was the creator of Beany and Cecil. Included in this drawing is an inset that says "Tune in on Bob Clampett's "TIME for BEANY" Mon. thru Fri. 6:30 P. M. KTLA --Channel 5". The ad also includes the same menu that is shown in the video with the same prices, including "Cecil Sundaes". Also on this page is an ad for the program for the Circle Drive-In Theater which shows the same movies playing that weekend as is shown on the sign in the video, so I know that this is when this video was taken. I've looked at photos of Bob Clampett (who also created Porky Pig) and he doesn't appear to be one of the men in the video. "GRAND OPENING! - Saturday - Oct. 25 - 5 P.M. Something NEW. On Friday, October 24th, the second of what will soon be a nationwide chain of self-service Beany Drive-In's opens its doors to the public at Coast Highway and Ximeno (near the traffic circle) in Long Beach. After over two years of testing food items, planning containers and developing beauty, functional design, modern color and architectural style, the Beany Drive-In's offer the ultimate in good food with emphasis on economy, quality and convenience! Here's how it works! The customer may choose the service he prefers. He may remain in his car, enter the drive-way marked "Car Service Entrance," give his order over a microphone station located at the menu board, then proceed through the car-port where his order will be handed him packed in special Beany containers ready to take home. If he chooses, he may park in our spacious lot and enjoy his meal here. Or, he may park first and use the Walk-up window where he will be given the same fast, courteous service. There is no magic in our low prices and high quality food. We have merely streamlined every phase of preparation, minimized the number of employees necessary to serve you, designed our units for a tremendous volume of business with a tiny profit on each transaction and passed on the savings to you, our customer. We invite you to attend our grand opening and see this wonderful new restaurant idea in operation. We know you will return again and again! I never got to live in these times or anywhere near, but I have a piece of these times with me, my '56 Chevy truck. She's as stock and correct as they come, i restored her with my dad. Some people treat classic cars as "Cool hot rods" and through modern components and engines at them, and each to his own, but for me, a classic car is also a time machine, So I like to restore them to how they used to be, and I'm very particular about the correctness. Even just this week I got a 1963 Mercury driving again after almost 15 years of sitting. When you get truly stock car out in the country away from everything, even without any modern cars on the road, you can just about convince yourself you have gone back in time.

    Wow... what a difference from today. Girls actually wore clothes during the 50's and looked like nice young women. Men wore suits and nice clothes and no one had their pants to their knees with underwear showing each having respect for one another . If there was a time machine I would gladly go back to this time . Being born much later in life I would have loved to have lived in a simple safer America. The city was actually clean nice car and no congestion.

    wow, remember when people cared about manners and dress and didn't take a trip to dine out for granted? no tanks tops and screaming kids and swearing and disrespectful people sitting next to you blowing their nose in a napkin, washing and waxing the car you got a loan for and not littering and saying please and thank you.......never happen again.

    People wearing suits, dresses and kids in slacks, and no booty shorts, skimpy tanks or pants hanging down around their butts..what a breath of fresh air! It seems that people took more better pride in themselves, than they do today!
