You should think about teaching natural dyeing! It would be so interesting, you seem like you would be a really good teacher because you seem so passionate about Irish wool.

I wonder if the underfloor heating in the dye studio would be good for the bread proving. I get the Almanac every year, includes tides and moon cycles. This years is all to do with gardening and flowers

I love the sound of the sourdough bread crackling after it comes out of the oven! We made sourdough consistently for almost 3 years starting in 2020 but last year in May, we moved and started new full-time jobs, and haven't had the time to do it. Our poor starter is sitting in our refrigerator! But I miss making the bread, even when it doesn't come out perfectly, it's still so good! Thanks for sharing. I just received my yarn order from your shop and it's so beautiful. I'm looking forward to knitting with it!

Have you considered a seed starting mat for your sourdough starter/bread? They usually stay at 20 C. Another idea is a large dehydrator, like the excelsior. The trays can be pulled out and your starter or bread dough can go in and it could be run at the lowest temp.

I worked a summer on a biodynamic farm in the mountains of Idaho one year. What an experience that was. There were so many rituals we took part in and it was so much fun! Anyways, a lovely vlog as always. It’s so fun seeing your studio come along!

Totally get you with the sourdough. I struggle with understanding when things are ready. I recently started making ginger bug drinks which are naturally fermented sodas and it could not be easier to start. I just grab the cheap apple juice that is shelf stable and mix it with the gingerbug and 24 hours later I have a lovely fizzy fermented drink.

For seed germination trays I use the tops of my fridge and freezer. The machines give off enough warmth to be considered "bottom hear." Might work for your sourdough starter, too, draped with a cozy cloth. This vlog is a treat! Thanks, Emma.

I made a proving spot by using a camping cooler and an inexpensive device that shuts off or turns on a 40 watt light bulb when the temperature gets too hot or too cold. The light bulb is warm enough to heat the inside of the cooler. It works remarkably well! There’s a little sensor that sits inside the cooler. Your studio is coming along! So excited for you Emma! And for us knitters of your gorgeous yarns! 😊

Planting by the moon phases really works - I have gardened in schools with children for years and the cool experiment is planting 2 crops at a good phase and not so good. Our New Zealand Gardener diary I buy every year has the phases printed in each month so I can plan gardening sessions - theres a difference between above ground crops and root crops too. Thanks Emma love your vlog

Hi Emma, I have a styrofoam box from a delivery and I put my starter or my sourdough (if it needs to be kept warm as well) in there together with a bottle of warm water. I keep a thermometer in it and go for 26-30 degrees Celsius but it doesn‘t have to be exact. That‘s supposed to be the temperature the sourdough microorganisms like best. It‘s definitely a budget-friendly option and you don‘t need any electricity for it.
Thank you for your wonderful podcast. I enjoy it so much!

Good looking bread. I've been making my sour dough bread for 4 years. I now prove and bake in bread loaf tins as we prefer the shape and easy to cut. I also add for 1 kg of flour, 40gms oil and 50gms honey, that just adds a little flavor. Keep up the great work. Very hot here in New Zealand at the moment, hard to keep spinning and knitting in this weather

Oooh, I love the idea of the Dunrobin in your blue texel yarn. I like the pattern a lot and am coveting that yarn...hmmm. I don't want to blatantly copy but...well, yes, I do.
I understand having allll the hobbies and no time to pursue them. I always have way more I want to do or know about than hours in the day too. Isn't it great? We will never be bored or lonely, who has time for that nonsense?? It's even harder with little, but for me, having my son grown doesn't mean I have more time, it just means there is more I want to learn about!

  • @seaweedeater3104

Hi Emma, you just need a warm spot for sourdough. An airing cupboard, top of fridge might work, in your dye studio when you’ve got your pots on or on the heated floor in the studio. Put a tea towel over your bowl of dough so air can still circulate rather than a shower cap.
Actually those places are good for other ferments as well, sauerkraut, yoghurt etc. You can also buy heat mats for germinating seeds in trays. They are size of a seed tray. That could be used too. You can experiment

The studio looks fantastic and the chirping birds is such a nice thing to hear right now…it’s very cold here at the moment, so I’m not hearing many outside noises the last few days!

  • @Gail_Blanton
    @Gail_Blanton 7 місяців тому +1

Yes! The cold has really affected the sourdough process here as well. I don’t think our home gets quite as cold as yours but I have found a way to speed things up without having to purchase anything new. Although my oven has a proofing setting it is really too warm for the sourdough slow rise that is desired. My solution is to preheat the oven just a until it feels warm, not hot. I then turn the oven off and place the dough in its bowl in the oven and close the oven door. This has really helped a lot. Another thing I tried was to turn on the oven light to generate a gentle heat which has also helped. I hope you enjoy the course you take and will share some of the tips you glean. Btw, I love seeing your studio progress. The composite floor tiles look great!

Good luck on your fermentation journey! I've been kombucha brewing for a few months now and love it! Planning on cider next, I think. I haven't tried the sour dough (Can't eat wheat/gluten), but the cold definitely impacts the fermentation rate of kombucha. Lovely to see the progress on the studio

I use my dehydrator machine as a proving oven, it works really well and has the advantage of being able to dry fruits and vegetables. Dehydrators aren't too expensive either, mine was £75. Happy New Year! And thank you for sending replacement print to me so quickly Emma

No surprise to me but we have identical hobbies/interests. I'm a few decades older than you and now I have lots of time for fermenting and making sourdough (three or four times a week). Sauerkraut is dead easy to do - we do a cabbage, fennel, apple one that is our favourite. Kombucha is tasty and good for you but I was drinking way too much of it so I cut that back a bit; Water kefir is overrated in my opinion, but you do you. That wee loaf you made needs no apology at all. It's gorgeous. I love your Eun sweater. The colour is gorgeous. I need to stop rambling. Please keep vlogging.
