as someone who has never been in into watching movies, the diary feature of the app was a game changer. i only downloaded the app last week, but seeing all the movies i've watched makes me feel a sense of accomplishment lol. i loved your analysis, short but well done. great video!
The ability to rate and arrange the movies I watch just makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable for me. It makes me think more about what I've watched and engages me with my own thoughts and opinions more.
Ever since getting on letterboxd I don’t trust rotten tomatoes scores for an accurate depiction of a film’s quality. Letterboxd gives the voice to the people instead of separating critic and audience score, as well as not bribing influential people to give certain films high scores :)
I joined Letterboxd back in March 2021 and I’ve become a cinephile because of it. After logging all the movies I’d seen until then, I realized that I’d watched just a few movies in my life and decided to change that. My life was never the same. Great video!
I've always been a casual movie fan, but when I downloaded Letterboxd in April it changed everything. Pretty sure I've watched and logged a movie onto my diary every single day since July
I just love going through my diary and remembering all the movies I saw throughout the year, helps remember who I saw the movie with and what I did that day. It's such a fun app
I think certain movies are being discovered more than ever because of Letterboxd. Possibly the biggest example is "House" directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi. The movie is very popular on Letterboxd. This has lead to it become slightly more mainstream among film viewers.
I've always loved movies, but getting Letterboxd in 2017 really changed my process. I think it just makes the opinions of "the people" so much more accessible. People can be as serious or comedic, as thorough or simple, as they want. Seeing what other people are watching motivates me to watch and see where my opinion lands-- when the people have a strong common opinion, or even polarized opinions, it motivates me so much more to "see what it's all about" than critics on RT. But mostly, I love using Letterboxd as my own personal log. Going back and seeing what I've watched, rewatched, how my opinions have changed, etc. is so much fun. Films almost become more rewatchable, and I become more intent on discovering new and interesting aspects when I do rewatch. It's just great.
ive loved movies my whole life, but after i downloaded letterboxd in 2022 im scared ill end up becoming even more addicted to rating/filling out my diary rather than just enjoying a movie :/
ive never been a movie person but fairly recently i got letterboxd because the reviews for Anatomy of a Fall were really funny. now ive watched 6 movies this year which honestly is not a lot compared to other users but it's a big deal to me bc as i said before, i never watch movies unless it's for school. im really grateful because i got to grow a bit closer with friends while talking about movies and the website itself
Letterboxd changed the game for me because till I joined I was only watching stuff that was around or friends were recommending. The list feature even let me figure out just how many films I have watched over the years!
I literally hated, for real, i hated cinema. Then i downloaded Letterboxd and i watched almost 100 movies last year (That's much more than i did in the rest of my life).
It certainly has for me too. I use to write down films I love on my notes app but now I can just log it on my Letterboxd easy. Plus the visuals are amazing.
That’s a shame, maybe take a break from the app? I think it’s fun to engage critically but if it stops you from enjoying something you once did maybe take a step back? Thanks for your comment though it’s appreciated!
He has 785 subscribers at the time of writing this comment, but has such high quality videos! It’s crazy to see other channels on this platform that create questionable content, and have millions of subscribers. And there’s so many channels, exhibit A, that have such amazingly detailed and captivating videos…yet they don’t get as much attention. I really hope you blow up in the community!!!! Much love❤️
Great video! I was surprised to see that your channel is fairly new and small. I hope you get the recognition you deserve. I‘ve only had Letterbox for a year but I absolutely love it. It made me enjoy watching new movies much more. I love having all the movies watched in one place, reading reviews and checking out new movies and lists of movies people make.
One thing I can tell after joining letterboxd is that now I have great taste in movies😂. I used to see all craps before now i watch what they call CINEMA and boi its so fun and emotional roller coaster.. love u letterboxd for making me this crazy about moviees.
Letterboxd is actually the best way to see if a film is good or not. Not everyone takes it seriously, there are no review bombs, and it's not Rotten Tomatoes. That's perfect if you ask me.
Really good video. I try to outdo myself every year with the number of movies I've watched. Sometimes it's a chore, but I'm usually grateful I went to the theaters. I went 47 times this year and watched 68 movies. I don't think I'm beating 2023 any time soon.
I would never do anything that feels like a chore but I’m glad you are grateful for it after! It’s no rush to beat anything just take it at the pace that beat suits you:) thanks for engaging with the video!
Great analysis on Letterboxd! Also am I the only one who logs new movies into the diary and not older movies that I’m watching for the first time? Is that okay or is it all preference? I don’t even log rewatched movies..
@@itstalesfromthescreen actually I’m obsessed, and right after I made an account there was a kind of review of all of the popular movies that the user can slide through and rate/like/watchlist the movies, and I spent two hours adding movies, until I reached 300+, and I was tired, and I’m trying to get back to that page/feature but I couldn’t find it. Anyway, thank you so much for giving me the push to try something new which turned out to be great. xo
Since I was 10, in the 90s I was searching for all body of works of a director or a writer and I had this game that If Liked a book I have to read everything from that writer and if I liked a movie I have to see all movies from that director, is nothing new ffsake.
I’m sorry but if you see Letterboxd as a competitive game you really don’t give a shit about movies. Still, I’m happy to see this phenomenon keeping people interested.
@@itstalesfromthescreen it’s impressive that you’ve avoided watching the godfather for so long, especially as a film enthusiast That aside, you’ve sold me on letterboxd
I never thought of it as gamification, but you're absolutely right, I'm always thinking about what I'm going to watch next now because I want to add to that running total, or finish a list of some directors works. I had previously never been a big movie guy or even a social media guy. I had even quit all of my other socials for a while before I picked up letterboxd, and I only started using it so I could "tier list" which movies I actually liked best. But now it's more than that and I basically look through letterboxd every time I look at my phone. Maybe it's a movie I just watched that I started to feel better about after a day or two reflection, so I up it half a star. Sometimes it's moving lists around and creating new ones, or looking for new stuff to watch. I've found so many movies I never would have known existed because of letterboxd lists. The best part of the social media side of it is finding other people through reviews who have similar taste to you so you can get recommendations on what to watch or see what they thought. Sometimes when I'm bored waiting in line or something similar, I just click a random movie I watched and read through reviews of it to see what other people thought. Personally I like the critical side more than the joke reviews, but sometimes they can be funny as well. It has helped me to develop my own taste and become more aware of what I like and don't like. I'm genuinely obsessed.
If IMDB still had forums I'd agree but finding like-minded people and be able to have discussions with them was what made the difference for me. Having said that I still use IMDB but mainly for the watchlist feature. My Letterboxed watchlist only has titles I manage to actually find copies of and can watch. They're both handy.
@@kaykutcher2103 Yeah I should have said it's a snappy IMDB to better describe what I wanted to say... I'm just figuring it out. I just started using it a few days ago. Any suggestions of interesting people I should follow?
Oh honey, most people doese't even know Letterbox exists, it changed the way (and is almost ruining) the way that some cinephiles, usualy the most anoying ones, watch movies
letterboxed is an inferior version to IMDb. Less Data about Movies, UI that feels like its made for mobile, unmoderated 1 sentence reviews. I tried it and I dont get whats supposed to be better about it.
I can't stand letterboxd because of the stupid, witty reviews. It's so cringe and completely useless to me trying to find actual feedback about a film.
I have more of a letterboxd addiction than a movie addiction but im glad letterboxd is making me watch movies
Honestly it’s so motivating and fun

I love the dairy feature, very addictive. Thank you so much for your comment!!
exactly the problem with letterboxd. makes movies into a thing to check off like a game and not a piece of art to be experienced
Totally agree. I don’t write any reviews and I read very few on the app. But I love keeping a log of my film history.
Real. I've been averaging 2-3 films everyday ever since I downloaded it
logging in Letterboxd literal gives me a dopamine shot.
Every. Single. Time.
letterboxd is just youtube comment sections for movies
I don’t think I would’ve watched half of the movies I’ve seen if it wasn’t for Letterboxd

Thanks to letterboxd I found films I never knew existed and had fun watching them as well.

Very good point, and I think that also has part to do with its very iconic poster shown on letterboxd, that people can’t help but watch
Only Letterboxd made me realize I can watch 50 films in a month.
I don’t know how passionate about film I would be if it wasn’t for Letterboxd. I wouldn’t have seen most of my favourite movies if not for it.

Letterboxd motivated me to watch far more movies and reflect on which ones I have watched. The title says it all.
Couldn’t agree more, thank you for your comment :)
As someone who likes ranking films by series/director the app’s list feature is perfect. Making and changing lists is so easy and fun
Completely agree, it’s one of its best features
Im a teenager, and I’ve watched more movies in the almost 2 years I’ve been on letterboxd, than I had in my life before then
It’s a really great motivator

Using an audio clip from Community for the Community section is *chef's kiss*
Lol I’m happy someone noticed, always trying to do fun editing stuff!
Letterboxd is why I watch more movies than I would’ve otherwise, simply because I want a bigger ‘*blank year* film ranking’ for no reason
Letterboxd was my gateway drug to movies. I got to be haha i watch movies but now ive seen 278 movies in 127 days

I stopped using stars for a while to prevent this, eventually went back to rating but w/o half stars and it’s much less of a problem
I would recommend to stop star rating and instead forming actual opinions
Great short video! Loved your analysis of the gamification of the app.

She was, then people found her account so she had to get rid of it. I’m sure a lot of film makers are with anonymous accounts tbh
