Kenny and Lionel became best friends. There is a clip from a Lionel Richie special where Kenny is telling the story behind Lady and meeting Lionel. Then they sing Lady together and you can tell how close they are.
My husband found a way to always have this song played on our anniversary. Whether it was a song request on the radio, queued up in the car, or the time he tried to learn to play it on the saxophone to wake me up. The most memorable one was when he got my whole office to sing it. Even patients joined in. And he came out in a patient gown with a rose in a biohazard bag. I worked at the VA. People talked about it for quite awhile. For the record, none of the other patients were in gowns. I wasn't in that part of the facility then. I think he just liked showing off his hairy legs.
Kenny told the story about this song at a celebration of Lionel Richie. He basically said he called him and asked him to write a song and lionel told him he had a song he tried to pitch to the Commodores. So he flew him out to where he was recording and the only word he had was lady dadada dada dada. So he sat at wrote some and gave it to kenny he went and recorded the first verse and when he came out and asked for the next verse they told him Lionel is in the bathroom writing it he does his best work under pressure.
I don't ordinarily like live versions of songs, because I'm familiar with the studio version. But, at the time of this concert, Kenny had a cold, or something that made his voice kind of gruffy. It makes this version so much better than the studio version.
The music world lost this talented singer Kenny Rogers. I was stunned when I heard he had passed away. R.I. P. Kenny and thank you, thank you, for your music. A big fan. ❤❤❤❤💋💋💋
You want to know about the making of the song, go find the video of Kenny singing it at a tribute for Lionel. Then if you want the full circle.. go find the video of Lionel singing it at the Grammy's when Kenny died. They were great friends, family. I am glad you all did this one.
you know how people say they dislike anyone that their dog doesn't like... I feel like that about Kenny Rogers. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life 😂
You need to listen to the video where Kenny is going to sing the song and calls up Lionel to sing it with him. The show was actually one that promoted the album Lionel did with all country singers.
You should go all the way back to the 60s and do some of his Kenny Rogers & the First Edition songs. Also prior to that they were known as the Association. Old Classic 60s rock.
There's a video where Lionel Richie is getting an award! Kenny Rogers is on stage and tells the story of how the song Lady came about! And then Lionel and Kenny sings the song together! It's a pretty funny story of how the song came about!
Back in the early eighties Kenny Rogers was inescapable. He was everywhere all over the airwaves and popped up everywhere, kinda like COVID-nobody was immune. But in a good way. I was way into metal and funk back then but he still managed to worm his way into my heart and soul.
Okay so Lionel Richie wrote the song while he was trying to become his own artist a solo act he had met Kenny Rogers and they became friends and Lionel actually lived with Kenny Rogers for a considerable amount of time and they have been lifelong friends
Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson wrote We Are The World, and organized getting all of the talent together for the recording. The only place that was big enough to do what they wanted to do with it, was Kenny's recording studio, at his home.
There is a video of him inviting Lionel Richie up on stage with him. He also tells the story about how this was written. It is pretty funny. The video also shows the close friendship they had. Check it out.
I'm 10 years older than you, but my parents had Kenny Rogers around in the early to mid 80s, and that's where I heard it. Plus this song was crossing over to their pop and R&B stations. - Keith
I remember being a young child and walking out of my front door and seeing Kenny Rogers climbing down a ladder off of our roof. 😆😆 Young and dumb. It was my Dad's boss (a roofer) Harry who happened to took like Kenny Rogers identical twin.
It was a sad day for the world when we lost Kenny Rogers....the piano didn't really matter.. no one hears anything beyond his voice and his words...even the Gambler video is not flashy just a few props and a lot of Kenny....you can hear one word and know its him..Kenny and Lionel are both on my top 10 male singers! She believes in me and Through the years are both great Kenny ..I think you could play a different Kenny song every day for a month and not run out.

Find the performance at a CMT awards a short time before Kenny passed, where he & Lionel perform it together. The love between them & friendship is amazing. And Lionel did record this one too.

Kenny was a heck of an artist. I mean, I grew up staying as far away from anything country as I possibly could. But in the 80s, my parents had an Kenny 8-track. I would listen to Coward of the County and Lucille over and over. They fascinated me. - Keith

Keith, sing it for her anyway. It doesn't matter if you completely suck, if she loves you, she will love that you tried even if you can't carry a tune in a bucket. And I'll behave as far as Dustin is concerned. (yeah, I think he's cute) Anyway, the bourbon... It seems to have a great color. I'll add it to my list for bourbons to try starting in January. Naw, I'm never singing anything to her. And if I were really inclined, I'd probably just learn/play something on guitar, since I don't even know any romantic songs. And glad we can brighten your day some. - Keith
Kenny started out as a rocker. What Condition My Condition Was In and Lucille were done with The First Edition. Of course his fame and fortune came as a country artist.
Yeah, not a critique on the song, my Grandma loved Kenny. They played Through The Years at their 50th Anniversary. It's just this performance. I noticed something was off about it before Dustin mentioned it, but creepy is the best way to explain it.

This is a performance that never gets old. Never. This was recorded in 1980 and it is still gaining Kenny new fans.
