- A quick sound demo of the iconic Hofner violin style bass, an instrument made famous by Paul McCartney of the Beatles. The demo consists of the various pickup and switch settings and a bit of "Oh Darling" to sample it in a song arrangement setting.
I had a 1966 Hofner President just like McCartny’s. Played through a Hartke bass amp… it was every bit of a bass you’d want. Blew Rickenbacker’s doors off
Awesome
This is so iconic... Love the tone...
Awesome! Hope to see you make more videos using this base!
I’ve been a diehard McCartney fan since I started playing bass back in the 70’s. Consequently, I’ve owned a few 500/1’s over the years but I’ve never kept one for more than a couple of months… Their dead “boink” sound is cool for the first song but I prefer to hear and understand what I’m playing.
I’ve always had Rickenbackers and Jazz basses with Rotosound RS66LD’s.
I love the image of Sir Paul and his Beatle bass on stage, rocking away, but the Hofner basses are not my sonic cup of tea. Much respect to Sir Paul though!
00:36, is that the "oh darling" bass line?
I am just improvising the changes and not trying to copy the original line exactly Daniel.
What a fantastic video ❤😊 have a wonderful day
Thanks for tuning in!
May have been cheap bass but in Paul McCartney hands he made some incredible+timeless music of all time!! ❤
Yes he did, artist is way more than the bass guitar.
The sound with his '64 Rickenbacker was more focused and more suited for recording.
Only cheap because it was on post war Germany. It was made by people making violins and cellos using the same methods. A lot more skill and effort going into that than a Fender. I’m definitely not saying Fenders or Gibsons or whatever aren’t awesome. Just seems people equate what an imported Fender cost from a wealthy nation compared to a nation that lost a very big war.
Main point I’m trying to make is its price does not equate to it being a bad instrument.
They're certainly not cheap (inexpensive) these days, at least not the German made ones
Oh Darling
Yup
great bass, where did you get it?? They are hard too find.
I sold that instrument for a client of mine. I am not sure exactly where it came from but more than likely from a music store in Los Angeles, he bought it many years ago.
@@paulschelly1 Ok, thank you.
I strongly recommend nylon tape wound strings for a Hofner.
On my hofner (B-bass, Icon series) the control panel was crap: counter intuitive, unreliable, shorting out with even a little dust. And those switches are useless; off mean on and on means off. So I replaced the control panel with a blend pot (fader) and a volume control, no switches. It is now more user friendly and reliable. I do not know what the good people at Hofner were thinking when they made those horrid control panels.
Having said all that, even the cheaper models of Hofner violin bass (like mine) are worth having. Lightwieght, with a small neck and narrow body make it cozy to play. With a proper set up, the action is not bad. So get one of these basses if you like them, but it might need some work.
Yeah, as a player's guitar that bass has many disadvantages, but it is light and easy to play. Mods like the ones you mentioned would be a serious improvement.
Where did you find your control panel? I'd like to do the same. Also, besides making it more user friendly, did it improve your tone? I
Big shock when I needed to replace the strings on my '70 500-1, normal bass strings wouldn't fit through the tuning pegs! Hofner used guitar tuners! Hofner's necked-down strings set me back $173.00 in 1982!!!
That sounds like a real expensive problem! Wow!
I want a hofner so bad!
Liz, I would go to Reverb.com and subscribe to the Hofner bass feed and watch the market until you find a deal you like.
@@paulschelly1 thank you!
I don't.
Which model and which strings.
Original strings Horner installed, that is all I know.
Paul Mccartney's bass
Not exactly as it is one of many copies of Paul's bass, but that is the brand and model he uses.
Good for jazz or folk music ...being hollow bodied and light ...no match for a fender precision ...
Absolutely, P bass would crush the tone of the Hofner for sure!
Yes, great for trad jazz and folk. Hofner hollow body basses are also an excellent choice for old school blues and even classical. At it's core it's essentially a mini upright but with an added pickup(s) and frets.
Crappy basses that don't stay in tune and eventually need a neck reset.
In a general sense true, but each instrument varies in stability. A really good setup and maintenance improves performance of these bass guitars.
Out of tune as usual… had not Paul used it, nobody would take into consideration playing that poor instrument 🤷🏻♂️
Probably right about that Paco, view that guitar as more of a novelty device, hardly a high level bass like my professional bass.
I’ve played one. Never had trouble with tuning and you can buy more expensive versions now that are built better.
He's a fan of the beach boys@@thedogwoods5716
The day it can beat a Fender Precision will be a cold day in hell. Poor, puny, and overrated. Just because Paul McCartney favoured them doesn't make them good.
Never will beat Fender P bass or jazz bass in my opinion.
You’re listening to a very poor recording of the bass. Almost any bass can sound great if it’s not recorded through a tin can. It’s not a perfect instrument but it’s not a one trick pony either.
@@robotman5105 Digital recording has a harsh quality unfortunately. When I played it live through a Fender bass amp it did sound better from the original source than the recording for this video.
worst bass ever.
It would be at the bottom for me too, it is not solid or powerful as basses go.
Wrong. It has a specific sound that is great. Listen to many Beatle records. Paul's bass sound is immaculate on all of them. Playing with the Hofner or his Rickenbacker.
@@brent3760 Thanks for weighing in Brenton and all players will have unique perceptions of how good a piece of equipment is. I think personally Paul could make any functional bass work as his skill transcends beyond the instrument type or even overall quality. He definitely could make the Hofner work on a very high level for sure.
@@paulschelly1 You are spot on. I spoke, or typed too quickly. You are absolutely right! He could make a Sears catalog or walmart bass sound great! 👍🤙🎶
@@brent3760 I am certain of that!
played like a true amateur after his second guitar lesson
I am no amateur, if you can do better than prove it and not just run your mouth!
Это мерзко !
In what regards is it disgusting? Tone is what it is with that bass.
