I'm a waterproofing estimator/ project manager for commercial construction. I landed on one of your videos while doing some research. Now I want to build a boat...😁 I lived in Daytona for 18 years. Now I'm in the North Carolina mountains. Didn't realize how much I missed hunting reds and snook. I see a charter in my future. Thank you for your videos.
Thanks so much for watching! Yes, we love the gulf coast. We also love the Carolinas, beautiful country up there. Give us a call if you are ever down this way!
Joe I love the videos m getting ready to start on the inside of my boat I’ve checked out other videos about this and I’ve not found any that goes into detail like you keep it up and you are helping a lot of us DIY people
I have watched many of your “how to” videos about using various resins, cloth, and gelcoat. I am mechanically inclined and am learning a ton from your experience. I am doing my own stringer replacement on my classic center engine ski boat and have gained the confidence to do this from your content. Much appreciated! Liked and subscribed as I went. Thanks.
The algorithm popped you up after I searched for the 407. I realise now that after I’ve used the 407 to finalise shaping my styrene plug for a motorcycle seat I will have to use the 404 to add the metal hinge and locking mechanisms. Thanks so much. Liked and subscribed from South Australia.
This is awesome stuff. I've been rebuilding an old boat and I have used quite a bit of these stuff for bonding and filling. Worked great. Makes me feel proud of my work so far. I watch your videos on a regular, helps me a lot with my work. Commenting from Barbuda in the caribbean.
Capt Joe and fish bump family these products videos with tips and tricks has totally busted my confidence in the composite fiberglass world it really helps when you want to move forward and not being sure of what you are working with THANK Y'ALL for your time! every week looking forward to another great learning experience God bless y'all moving forward I just wanted y'all to know don't stop what y'all are fantastic doing it is helping so many folks!
I have watched a lot of videos on boat restoration as I am a first timer doing it and I am using west systems products. THANK YOU for explaining these so well. I look forward to all your other videos. You do an Excellent job.
Thanks again for this boat-building/repair content you have been creating recently. On comment to all concerning epoxy safety. I work with Epoxy daily in a research and development lab and I never handle Epoxy or Hardeners without covering my skin(long sleeves) and gloves. Eye protection is also very important. Epoxy is what is called a sensitizer. The more your skin is exposed to it, the more likely you will encounter a bad reaction to it. It's like Poison Ivy. You can be non-allergic for some time and then suddenly without warning, you get a serious reaction from small exposure. Once you are sensitized, I don't believe it can be reversed and you will not be able to work with epoxy again without having a reaction to it. The Silica is also very serious. The box/vacuum solution is a good one, but if you ever sense you breathe any of it in, you need to increase your protection against breathing it in. I would suggest always wearing a mask that fits very securely when using dry silica powder.
Thanks so much! Yes, we run a high quality filter, and run the vac from a good distance away. Always a good idea to wear a quality mask as well. We don't sometimes just for the sake of audio quality on the videos. Hope this helps and we appreciate you watching!
Have you successfully used the West System fillers with polyester resin? If you stick with Epoxy can gelcoat be applied on top if properly sanded and prepared? Thanks for the video and expertise.
I have used the 406 and the 403 with polyester and vinyl Ester resins. I don't usually recommended using gelcoat over epoxy, it can have unpredictable results. Vinyl Ester is another very good option that many people are not aware of. It has many of the qualities that people like about epoxy, but gelcoat will bond to it very well. I will have a resin comparison and guide video coming out very soon for you guys.I Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
That was quick, and you did very good. An application video with some testing would be great too I appreciate your time and attention to detail Thanks captain
Congratulations on your channel, watching you all the way from Brazil - Rio de Janeiro city. You should visit my city one day. I lived in the USA for five years. I know the keys and the entire east coast of California. 😂
awesome videos.. I have learned so much from them. Would you be available for consultation? im getting ready to replace the floor in a old project boat I own.
Thanks so much! Glad you are finding the videos helpful. Yes, we are setting up for doing some consulting work. We will probably be using patreon to make that happen for you guys. Hope to have info on that coming out soon!
For below the waterline you would want to use a epoxy or vinyl Ester based product. The west 610 epoxy or the 3m high strength filler might be good choices for you. Hope this helps and thanks for watching
Noted your comment that you designed your Buskens 2900. Please consider a video about your decisions on hull shape and spray rail design: shallow V, deep V etc. Number of spray rails, positioning etc. Thanks, your a good presenter.
Another great video Capt. Joe! I appreciate you taking the time to explain these fillers and how you would use them. I was poking around my boat storage area a few days ago and noticed one of my project boats has a tiny pinhole in the hull below the waterline. We've been getting a lot of rain and the boat is storage outside uncovered and water was seeping from the hole. Also, the same boat has what looks like a blister below the waterline as well. So, looks like I have a few repairs to do in the near future. Any suggestion as to how you'd repair? I'll check but maybe you already have a video covering these subjects? If not, perhaps an idea for a future DIY video. I always value and appreciate your videos and help. Thanks Capt. Joe!
Glad you are enjoying the videos! I am sure that the epoxy and vinyl ester fillers we showed a couple videos back could work good for any repairs below the waterline. We hope to do some videos on that topic very soon, so thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate you watching and best of luck with your project!
Hi Joe, where do you draw the line between lightweight gap fillers like the 410 and those PU expanding foams (not the construction foams) for filling hollow structures? I'm currently working on an orthotic insole and I want to fill the space underneath the arch support. What would you recommend: -Hollow with strong outer shell -Hollow with foam filled in (which density?) -Filled with 410+epoxy and sanding some slots in
Helllo! Me again... I have yet to seen a similar or almost exactly the same instruction video as this one BUT only using polyester and what you can do with different fillers and additives. All channels, including this one just bring up some magic can (which is not available world-wide, or rather, is available but under some other mystifying brand name) with some magic putty or filler. So far I have had some success in mixing polyester with glass balloons and silica. I am not confident enough to start using some fibre material though. Would be really appreciated if you made a video showing how to make different putties and fillers from scratch using polyester as resin. I simply cannot afford epoxy in most cases. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the overview on fillers. I'm presently building my fifth wood/epoxy boat. Yesterday I used a couple of tips I picked up from your earlier videos. Also, do you use wood flour as a filler?
Glad I could help! I love the wood and epoxy skiffs, we hope to build one on the channel. Yes, I have used wood flour before. It can work very well. I just thought a review of all the west systems products together might help folks understand the basics of additives and fillers. Thanks for watching and commenting
I do carbon fiber overlay witch one of those products will give epoxy better adhesion so when I lay that carbon material on product it would stick better thanks
It really doesn't matter if you add the filler before the hardener. Infact, if you want a lot of pots, then mixing the filler first, then the hardener will allow you to get working quicker with a longer working time
Yes, you can do that as well. I always felt like I get a better product mixing catalyst first. But it could be a personal preference thing. Thanks for watching
Awesome videos! Can you please do a video about repairing old, crappy epoxy repairs? I bought an old sea ray and want to fix the previous bad repair and gel coat. Seems like I need to grind it out and start over with a little mat and vinylester. It's a large gouge. His repair seems water tight, but looks terrible! 😢
I tried something one time that may be a bad idea...I don't know, but I thickened polyester resin with the fiberglass dust from the demolition. It seemed to work fine...the boat is still untested. do you have an opinion or have you ever heard of anything like that?
I have actually heard of someone doing that before, but not sure how long term use and durability worked out for them. We just use tried and true, tested products in the shop since it is what we do professionally. We always want to stay on the safe side. With that being said, the demo dust may work out just fine for you. Hope this helps and best of luck with your projects!
There is some specialized treated marine plywood on the market, but most marine plywood is not treated. We use a lot of marine fir plywood in our shop. I am sure if you research marine plywood you will see that there are a lot of options. Thanks for watching
