I am a park ranger. My park is about 10,000 acres. So pretty small. And extremely well traveled. Even still we have found deceased people years after they died. The woods are vast and dense. If someone goes off trail it can be near impossible to find them. This is especially true if they don't want to be found. Which is often the case with suicide.
I believe in paranormal things but when I hear people come up with conspiracy theories for people who simply went missing in the woods I can't help but think that people are severely underestimating how difficult it can be to find anything at all in acres and acres of wilderness.
The vast majority of people who are rescued want to be rescued and help their rescuers in some way. Educate yourself on how if you ever plan to venture off the trail.

My husband and I did some wilderness camping. One late night, I heard shuffling footsteps and heavy breathing. It stoped just inches from the outside of our tent. I was terrified, so quietly woke up my husband. He yelled at the unseen "person" to leave. Nothing: no answer, no movement, just more heavy breathing. My husband bravely unzipped the tent and laughed when he saw a huge range cow. I am so thankful he didn't come out shooting.
We were lucky. Lots of natural things could have finished us. Perhaps our most dangerous situation was (believe it or not) a lost baby bear. If the returning mother found us too close to him, she'd probably kill one of us. I've found a scorpion on my pillow, unmapped lakes, a dirt road ending at a cliff, rattle snakes, killer spiders and poison fruit look-a-likes that we didn't eat. I haven't seen a mountain lion but the big cat probably knew exactly where I was.
If you go wilderness camping bring a map (NOT GPS) enough food & water, be careful of hypothermia (staying wet in cold weather), and please respect the wildlife. Thank you.

I've always found the thought of, "they were experienced at solo-hiking so it was strange that they went missing" completely baffling. Like... are you genuinely surprised that the *untamed wilderness* would cause something unexpected to happen? To my understanding, if one is truly experienced, then they would know that no matter HOW prepared you are, it's ludicrous to think you're truly safe. Me , my husband, and our daughter who was about 3 at the time was heading home one night. We took back roads because it was faster. The moon was full and bright and you could see everything. My husband stopped to go to the bathroom. It was around 1:00 am so no other cars was around. I was looking in the field watching cows. Then I noticed a extremely large animal which my first thought was "dang that's the biggest cow I've ever seen". Then it stood up and looked straight at us. I yelled at my husband to get his ass back in the truck. The creature dropped on all fours and run towards us. My husband hit the gas and I kept watching. It run after us until I couldn't see it anymore because of the woodline. Our opinion it was a werewolf. I have never seen anything like it before or after. My husband said to never speak of it. Our daughter thank God slept through the whole thing. We arrived safely home, but didn't really sleep that night wondering if it might have followed us home. I know what we saw. I grew up very near the Smoky Mountains and spent a lot of time there. I remember when I was around 7 years old, we had a gravel driveway before it was paved. We lived in the hills and backed up to a wooded area.
My sister and I shared a bedroom. One night, during summer when we used to sleep with windows open, I woke up to something very big moving outside our window. I heard a sound that I thought was a dog grunting or growling. I definitely felt the presence of something. I pulled the covers over my head.
The next morning, there were huge footprints in the driveway gravel that was outside our window and I followed them up the hill to the end of the driveway. I couldn’t wait to show my nextdoor neighbor friends the footprints.
When our dads got home, we showed them the prints. My dad put his foot in one of the prints and I saw his face go pale. Our nextdoor neighbor was a large man and he put his foot in a print and his foot was also dwarfed. He looked at my dad and then looked at all us girls. We didn’t sleep with windows open after that, my parents got air conditioners.

My buddy Chase Robertson went missing out of vida/blue river Oregon, 2.5 years ago roughly 15 miles in the woods up logging roads. Nobody ever found a trace of his body or know where he went, as his phone was last pinged on the other side of the mountain, his car was about 15 miles from where his phone was pinged, and we found all of his belongings, except for himself. We tried flying over with radar/thermal imaging and couldn't find a body anywhere in the woods, we had multiple search and rescue crews, horses and various other agencies looking for Chase Robertson, it's been roughly 2 years and he hasn't been found.
Ironically, last summer on the highway outside those woods, a semi had flipped and blocked the road. It was super early in the morning and I tried to link Quartz creek road (up blue river) deep through about 50 miles of logging roads and woods (with no service) to wesfir so I could hit the highway over there and come home. Well, on top of the mountain I hit a patch of ice and got stuck. I was stuck up there for 9 hours before I decided to hike 22 miles in 8 hours, to get back to the main highway. I was fortunate enough to be able to have my phone on me and to run into a weird service zone where I had a bar of service so I could post to Facebook with my exact location for help, and that's where someone found me walking along the logging road, another 8 hours later (I was out there for 24+ hours, technically missing)
It was eerie walking through the deep woods out in Blue River alone, like that out there. It was intense, hearing sticks crack and branches moving around in the woods around you, hoping a bear or cougar doesn't come out and you meet your demise, or maybe some deep woods hicks that live in a ran down cabin hidden by overgrowth potentially has my buddy hostage, you never know what's going on in those woods...
Anyways, I made it back home and to safety, unfortunately my buddy hasn't. I wish I could hear back from him saying that "I'm okay". I grew up with this guy in highschool. Hopefully some closure turns up.

I am also aware of these strange missing person cases in your national parks. in Germany we call them Missing 411 cases. People disappear within the blink of an eye (sometimes out of groups of people) and either don't reappear at all or in weird positions (often without shoes) and are physically unharmed but dead. First comes the extensive search, the dogs cannot or do not want to scent people, then the weather change delays the search. sometime later the corpse is found, either in places that were impossible to reach or in the immediate vicinity, where the search had already been carried out several times.
Allegedly, it increasingly affects people with red or yellow clothing.
There used to be a rule of conduct here in the form of a phrase, but it's very old:
    If you wear yellow
    you go to another world
    if you wear red
    then you are dead
(in German the first 2 lines rhyme too)

From my understanding the term "Missing 411" comes from the USA
It became famous thanks to the work of David Polites (probably butcherd hisbname)
To consider a case a 411 case, it need to furfill certain cryterias tho
Considering those, a fair amount of the told storys here do not count
Many describtions of events sound rather suspicious
"The Lore Lodge" has a very good video explaining the cryterias for a Mussing 411
He also does a shit ton of research on those cases, which I seriously apprechiad

As the other reply stated, the term “Missing 411” is a term originating in the US via David Paulides and his work covering cases that meet the “411” criteria. He has written multiple books, has created a few movies/documentaries highlighting certain cases, and has a UA-cam channel called “Canam Missing Project” covering Missing 411 cases in Canada and America (hence the “canam”). He’s worked very hard for decades gathering all of the information and putting together his Missing 411 criterias based on patterns he saw when working in law enforcement on missing person cases in the US. Definitely worth checking him out! It’s so interesting that Germany is also using his term to describe their own similar phenomena. This world has so many mysteries, secrets and unknowns that we will never uncover or understand. I often think that’s probably for the best.

Grew up in the Colorado Rocky Mountains in a town of ~5000 people. Hiking was one of the only pastimes during the summer (no movie theater, mall, ect.). One time, a friend (now DOW officer) and I were DEEP in the woods... Much deeper than most people would go (12 hr hike) but that was pretty normal for us. We were descending into a bowl at the end of a small valley and as we walked down we could see something large just before the treeline (~11,000 elevation). We thought it was a barrel, but as we neared we could see it was a cow (open range grazing is common in our area). It's intestines (everything) had been sucked out of a 5" hole where it's a$$ should be. The eyes and tongue were also missing and there was no blood... Anywhere. The strangest thing was that no animals had touched it, in fact it was eeriely quiet. As we were taking picture we noticed another cow about 50m. away... Same condition. We were pretty freaked out as this was not normal, so we started to book it back to the car (~2 hrs of hiking left and the sun was setting). As we continued down the trail another 100m we found one more cow. It's hind legs were on it's knees and it's front legs were folded underneath it (think of the yoga pose downward dog) like it had died instantly and just dropped. Same thing as the others but the way the cow was orientated, blood was slowly flowing out of its mouth causing a little stream of blood to cross the trail. It was fresh. It's hard to explain, but this was the most abnormal way for an animal to die... My friend and I were really starting to get freaked out and took it as a warning. Right after we passed the final cow, we passed a group of 3 people (1m, 2f) and we said hello and gave them the trail... They said nothing and walked by us without looking at us. Again, SUPER WEIRD since everyone is super friendly and we basically know everyone in our town. They were not carrying camping equipment and as I said the sun was setting and this was not a place you wanted to be at night without shelter. We watched them disappear up the trail and proceeded to run to our vehicle (after 10 hrs of hiking that's saying something). Something was telling us to get out and we were running on pure adrenaline. That is the only time I've known true fear, every instinct was telling us to get out of that forest.
Edit: Thank you everyone for listening! For the nature experts out there saying small animals are the cause... I grew up in the woods and would regularly see dead animals at all stages of decay... What we saw was anything but regular. For the skeptics asking for pictures, they are off grid somewhere in Alaska with my buddy. This was pre-digital age and I don't think I'll be able to get those anytime soon if he even still has them.
I also don't want to give my home a weird reputation, so I won't be disclosing the exact location. But, small town in central Colorado in the Rocky Mountains.
Lastly, this was not an isolated incident. This happened around 2010 and other unusual occurrences peaked around then for about 2-3 years where we would see strange things in the sky almost every night. During that time, we brought plenty of skeptics to the woods and enjoyed watching them change their minds.
Edit: Just a word to the airchair warriors who can't believe that someone wouldn't have a picture of something that happened 20+ years ago... This was before smart phones. We used a real film camera (not mine) to snap a couple quick shots... I do not live in the US and my friend lives somewhere in Alaska but I haven't talked to him in 5-6 years. As for the other complaints about the fireballs in the sky... Taking a picture is the last thing you're thinking about not to mention I had a flip phone with about 10 pixels...

A friend of mine was a park ranger for a few years in Canada. He always refused to tell what made him change trade completely. One night though, his best friend got married and we all joined the party. After a lot of alcool, as we were all saying scary things around a fireplace, he said that he had something to tell us... that he never told to anyone...
We were all ears, especially that he was quite a private guy, always polite, but rarely talking about himself. He said that he told all people around him that he let go of his former career because he was fed up of the wilderness... but that it wasn't exactly the truth.
He said that the truth is because he saw something so scary, that he would never be able to go in the forest again. He said that what he saw, was something that look like a giant bat, at least 8 feet high, with big red eyes, like a red eye white mouse, and complete black fur and skin...the smell was that of sulfur and swamp, very intense...but that is not all...
He said that this thing was able to talk, although it was not making senses, like someone saying a bunch of words without any meaning or sensible sentence being said... He was terrified... He said he didn't talk about it because he know no one would believe him...
But he said 'i know what i saw...and i am never gonna go back there...' that's all he said and even posed his drink on the table and left. We all agreed that it was enough scary stories for the night and put water to extinguish the flames...but i must say we all went back fast to the cottage and wish each other good night. it was a weird moment.

Ive been backpacking and hiking for much of my childhood into young adulthood through much of California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Montana. I've seen packs of Coyotes, Black bears, Brown, Wolves, Deer, Moose, Buffalo and various other wildlife. I've only had three run ins with something Id consider strange. The first time I was 14 camping In the Oregon redwoods with 2 friends and one of their dads. We had just gone to bed and then all of a sudden we heard small rocks hitting the side of the tent. At first we thought it was pine needles. but then it continued and the rocks gradually got bigger. we yelled out Who ever is doing that its not funny, but it Continued. My friends dad got out of the Tent with a flashlight and 38. and went to Investigate. we all stayed in the tent and waited for what must of been 5 minutes, then we heard Rustling sounds near the tent, so we all stepped out of the tent to investigate with our flashlights not 15 feet from the tent stood a Large figure very harry Huge hands, Feet and Body. Me and my friends stand at 6'4 6'6 6'9. this Thing was atleast 9 feet tall and resembled an Gorilla in Body mass. It just stared us down for a Moment and grumbled. and then it slowly backed into the bush before turning out of sight. a few moments later the Father had returned too find us Frozen still outside the tent still dumbfounded. We stayed up all night and hiked out at daybreak. the next story I was 17 Hiking some trail in Tahoe California to a Lake called Pyramid lake just below Pyramid peak. I was Hiking ahead of my group with my Friend I brought along I knew the trail well as We had backpacked it several times growing up. me and my Friend were only half mile ahead of our group. Along the way we came across another Hiker He was dressed Like someone from the late 1800s, My friend had thought it strange But I not so much. there is a group that dresses up like the 49niners and does some hiking and trails with wagons horses and donkeys likes their forefathers for fun. I thought it was just a straggler. when he came up to us He asked us where we were headed and in which way is the nearest town. He then Introduced himself as Thomas he was about 5'6 dirty blonde hair, short cut, green eyes. He then asked if we could spare him some water, which we did and poured into his canteen. He made small talk on the weather, and fishing spots and then Wished us farewell. we watched him slowly hike away from us and like a mist he faded from thin air. was a very strange moment for us. we stood there and waited. Our group eventually caught up to us and we didn't speak of it. on our return several days later we again hiked ahead of the group and came up to that hill. and a Hiker approached he asked How much further away the lake was and if we knew any good fishing spots, me and my friend were frozen as it was the same person but dressed Normal. he continued as he did before with small talk and then said farewell and continued down the path. as he did he vaporized as before in a few moments. for My final encounter I was in Arizona I was 19 camping with my family. I went out exploring the rocks and Desert terrain. as I did I caught a foul smell near me but couldn't place it I got up onto a high rock too Look around and that's when I Heard my name being called from my mom but it was distorted somehow. it was coming from a rock formation 30 feet from me. But i could see my mom down below reading a book in her hammock. I called out to her, did you call my name? she replied no But be careful not to wander off too far and stay Hydrated, I turned around from where the sound had come from slowly as the hairs on the back of my neck felt like Ice. I saw a Figure It looked like a Deer but also a Teenage girl. The best way I think I could describe her would be if anyone here has ever played the game Skyrim. She resembled the Forsworn. she then let out a Light chuckle and then said in the voice of my younger sister, come and play. then backed back into the rock formation. I ran my ass all the way to the Rangers station, a Native man was the Ranger. I had told him of what I had seen. He immediately called the Tribal police and brought me to my family he told my Family that a Dangerous Man was on the loose and it wasn't safe for my family to be here and that a full refund would be granted But we had to leave immediately. My family did as he had asked. and we left within the hour. as we had left the campground many of the other campers were leaving. but a Parade of 15 SUVS of tribal and state Police were pulling into the campground. some of them were in Pickup trucks with Rifles and Semi automatics. I also saw Several Old men who had their faces painted in ash. To this Day I think I'm lucky to be alive and I think I know what it was I had Encountered. So If I ever go hiking out in Native lands again I have remembered too Find a Local Shaman and Purchase Blessed Totems and carry white ash with me. when I hike alone in the Mountains I bring Offerings with me too the spirits of the woods and streams, and I always ask for their permission and blessing before I attempt a hike.

Growing up my brother and I were both in scouting. He, boy scouts, me girl scouts. The boy scouts were a lot more active. I'm not exactly sure when this story occurred but my best recollection is that it was the early 1980's. Like I mentioned, the boy scouts were very active. Well, during this trip it wasn't really a sanctioned "boy scout" activity but several scout masters and their sons and a few more scouts decided that they were going to go camping and hiking at Mt. Baldy in New Mexico. We lived in the kcmo area so it was a pretty big deal for all of them so they were excited for the road trip and the overall experience. I believe they were planning to be gone for something like 10 days. So all packed up with gear and food and everything needed for such an adventure and off they went. After the allotted time, home they came. Looking at little scruffy but understandable after being on the road and out in nature for the time they were. Being curious about the trip and everything he experienced i started asking questions. How was the drive? What did you see? What did you eat? How was camping? Etcetera etcetra His answers were, for the most part, very vague which was semi infuriating because I wanted to know everything. It was like he was reluctant to answer any of my questions. Until I asked about the hiking they had done. He didn't say anything for a few minutes but just stared at me until he finally told me that something had happened and that they had barely made it back alive. But when they had made it back to camp they had immediately packed up everything and left. When I inquired further as to what the hell he was talking about he said that he didn't want to talk about it and to NEVER ask me about it again. My brother died a few years ago and to my knowledge he never told anyone anything more than what he told me that day. He wasn't ever the kind of man to frighten easily and never backed down from anything so whatever it was that this group of scouts and their scout masters encountered was something that none of them could have defeated. I would love to know of any folk lore about Mt. Baldy to maybe try to understand where could have frightened him so badly.

Like catholic priests for example.. private schools/clubs, (teachers).., and obviously boy/girl scout organizations..
And BTW, when I say, "successful" I mean the ones that usually tend to get away with the sick perversion.

We have a lot of black & brown bears, cougars, wolves & coyotes, as well as wolverines, stoats, Pine Martins, moose, elk & deer in our area, along with the occasional mountain goat & bighorn sheep in the summer months. Because of the high predator count & being near the Yellowhead highway, It’s not uncommon to see a prey animal with absolutely horrendous injuries, either from a failed kill attempt by a predator or a run-in with a vehicle during the night. It’s never failed to amaze me that they can survive as long as they do with such truly horrific injuries. Needless to say, if we happen across an animal in that shape, we immediately put it down or else alert the nearest Fish & Wildlife office/Park Rangers (depending on which direction the animal is seen going).

When the Spanish first arrived to the Americas and began charting and mapping them, the interior & forest lands were often named as badlands and generally avoided. They often illustrated giants and different beasts marking these areas. The native Indians also had great respect for the dangers of these badlands and entered with caution. Even today, millions of acres of national forest are still untamed and city folk enter at their own risk. Thing is, modern men have lost that age old fear and respect for the badlands. We are born with a certain 6th sense spiritually but most people today tune this out. God created this for our spirits to gauge danger that is near or lurking in the shadows that we cannot see.

That "bad feeling" is really interesting. Was out at a buddies house in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
They have a gated driveway to keep campers/tresspassers out, you can camp anywhere on state land out there, there are also lots of UTV rentals.
One night I was opening the gate to leave drove through, our 4th night visiting, I instantly got a bad feeling like I was being watched when I went to close the gate. I never had a concern previously. Looked around a second as I closed the gate, Got back in the truck quickly, looked around, saw a set of eyes reflecting from about 60 ft up the hill. Through a thin layer of tall grass.
They ended up spotting a mountain lion out there a couple times over the next few days. Creeped me the heck out, but apparently that 6th sense of danger is alive and well in me. 😂😊

Having working in Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Big Bend, Isle Royale and Death Valley then working just outside Zion and Rocky Mtn NP, I concur with the Ranger.
Many people who enter these Parks are in a mindset that nothing will happen to them because they are smarter than those who get lost.
The Parks are enchanting, alluring, offer some amazing photo opts and when common sense switches (Off) and the Cavelier replaces it, trouble is now brewing.
Maps are available at the Visitor Center, a compass is available at your local Camping store. An Emergency kit is also available, nice to have some insurance. Bear spray is available in the Parks that offer it.
Have met many ill prepared people out in the back country with little supplies set up for a 2 mile hike not a 20 mile hike. People run out of water, run out of food, run out of common sense, run out of options.
It is 2024 and people still get within 10ft of a 2k lb male bison....wtf?
Saw a guy run up to a Grizzly sow, with 3 cubs trying to get a close up with his phone. Luckily his wife barked at him and he turned around before the Sow noticed his close proximity to the cubs.

I KNEW in my bones immediately that pure evil was chasing me. I used to doubt my own senses, but I now believe in my experience. Holy shit, I’m shaking and crying thinking about the fear I felt in those moments. I know without a doubt that I would have died had they caught me and never been found. They seemed to have flashlights in their hands, though, maybe simulating human shapes to trick me into not being scared. They never spoke a word while chasing me, though, just two pitch black shadow figures sprinting after me without making a sound.

Dude I got chills rn and scared. I had something like that happen to me in the city in an alleyway at night. My gf left out of nowhere she just wanted to go and I was getting my stuff ready but she had gone out the alleyway already and left out of sight . And out of nowhere a man that looked shadowy and dark walked in and I wasn't scared at first and it looked like he was acting drunk and figured he had to pee but he kept walking down and when I got my stuff and started walking away towards the other end and my body turned away from him I heard his footsteps pickup, it's sounded like he was running after I looked away n I quickly turned around and it looked like he was chasing me for the split second i looked and i booked it terrified that i was gonna die and it felt creepy as fk in my body, my heart was pounding and i had to squeeze through these objects at the other end of the alleyway and my jacket got caught and I was so scared I was gonna die I had to yank my jacket off the thing that was there then i was free and i had to squeeze through two storage containers and ran to my gf telling her i almost died and she wouldnt have known. I asked why she left so abruptly like she sensed something and she didn't wait for me. I think I would've died and went missing or something it felt so scary it was unreal. This was in Cincinnati Ohio btw which I feel has a lot of evil and demons there. There's just a bad negative vibe in this area. I think there's reptilians and illuminati here for real. A lot of people I knew say that this city and area had bad energy and it's sticker than mud. People get stuck here like I did and i ended up homeless for a year and had lots of bad experiences and met lots of fucked up people unlike where I'm from which is southern California. This happened right after sunset when It got dark and my gf took off like a scared deer thinking the cops were gonna come or something and I thought that was weird and took my time to get my stuff when this weird guy came in this quiet dark alleyway. I couldn't see any details of him just a dark silhouette of a person. I felt complete fear like I was gonna die and normally don't get spooked like that but this moment felt weird all of it. Me and her later stopped in this stoop down the block and I think the guy that chased me passed us by but I'm not totally sure that it was him. It kinda looked like his silhouette but not 100% sure it was but this guy looked at me like he was mad and stared into my soul a bit. He gave me a creepy stare as he walked by like as if he was mad he couldn't catch me. It was a weird look and I never seen him before and at this time I was already homeless for almost a year or about a year and knew other homeless people that lived there and friends with a lot of them and knew pretty much all of them or seen em around but this guy kinda looked homeless but not familiar to me and I'm not a wimp or a scaredy cat by any means but this experience was truly terrifying for some reason. It just had bad vibes all around it . I felt it in my gut. At the time I felt whatever was chasing me wasn't human even though it looked like it and when he showed up it was really quiet and no one else was around on the other side of the street where he came from so i felt if anything happened to me no one would've known or seen. I truly felt like I was running for my life that day and it gives me chills thinking about it.

To keep myself entertained, I listened to a conspiracy theories podcast while I walked by myself over the wooded mountains. I ate up the stories as eagerly as the bag of jolly ranchers I carried with me, but there was one episode I decided not to listen to, Missing 411. Months after returning from the trail, I finally have the courage to listen to these stories, and I was surprised to hear that one of then took place at Newfound Gap, a place I traveled through on the solo portion of my journey. The boy said he was not feeling well and so, decided not to go with the troop when they hiked to the peak (climbing from about 8,000 feet to 11,000 feet). The leaders told the boy to not leave camp. When they returned several hours later the boy was missing. The leaders left the boy BY HIMSELF in camp. It was not until some 10 years later that the boys remains were found. It would appear that he decided that he was feeling better and decided to hike to the peak and meet up with the troop. At some point, he fell off the trail and his remains were found scattered about 100 yards below the trail.

Anything could have happened to him even if he had stayed put as they told him to do.
That said, I saw a news report recently of a toddler being left all alone at daycare, in a darkened room, all because her mother was 15 minutes late picking her up. Surely that went against policy, and yet they did it anyway. The mom arrived 15 minutes after she was originally supposed to, so thankfully the child wasn't alone for long. But had stood on a chair to look out the glass part of the door and was probably terrified, being left alone. There's seriously some idiots out there, careless, impatient, selfish and reckless who should not be responsible for other people's kids. Tragic that boy lost his life due to the lack of common sense of the adults charged with watching and caring for him.

There's a spot about 5 minutes outside of my town. We went back in there hiking and camping one night. We found a bunch of old rock foundations from cabins and such. So we set up tent and start to crash out. Keep in mind it's pitch black out there at night. You're under a dense tree canopy in these woods. About two hours later I hear footsteps outside the tent in the leaves. The dog sits upright and backs up against me and all his fur is standing on end. My girlfriend is looking at me with her eyes wide. we're just listening. The light inside the tent is like a night light that barely gives off any, just enough to see what's next to you.
Why didn't the dog bark? He's always a yappy dick head. Barks at shadows.
The foot steps stop about 10 feet from the ten and we hear this woman's voice say "Hello there!" Very cheerful sounding as if she met us on the trail. So I said "um hello. Can I help you with something?" And she didn't respond. So I grab my light and walk outside. Nobody is there. No lights in the woods, no foot steps, no foot prints. To sound at all. No mushrooms involved lol

@@SugarMilkbro I was in the zigzag forest area camping with a guide. This guy knew his stuff been out in the woods most of his life.
We camped out in the wilderness next to a stream not in any official camping spot. The first thing my buddy did was build a fire circle and had me gather enough fire wood to last all night. He told me it was because of cougars. I thought it was a little strange the way he said it but I complaid. After we had the wood and he got a very small fire started then we put up the tent and the rest of camp.
That night we were drinking by the fire when I heard a baby crying. I went to get up and my buddy. Put his hand ony arm with a grip like a vice. Literally pulled my back into my log. What he said still spooks me to this day. He said there is no baby out there. Stay by the fire and pretend like you don't hear anything. So we did just that. We didn't talk anymore just stayed in front of the fire. Then after about 10 minutes the baby's cry just stopped. About 30 seconds later a woman started sobbing and crying asking for help. Same thing I started to stand up and he looks at me and shakes his head.
After a few minutes it stops and I felt I don't know how to describe it but I felt like a presence leave. I see my buddy relax. Then he says this to me.
That was why we built the fire first thing. People get lost all the time out here. There are other things that live in the woods things science won't acknowledge. It's best to leave those things alone. Not all of them are bad. But there was no woman or baby out in those woods. Just something trying to lure us away from the safety of the camp. People go missing in the woods all the time. Those people are good folks just trying to help or curious. You don't get curious in the middle of the woods at night. You stay by the fire in your camp. When the woods go quiet you go quiet. Then he told me about 30 seconds before that baby cried the woods went silent.
The experience gave me a lot of knowledge but gave me a huge respect for the wilderness and taught me that there are other things out there that we don't want to think about or acknowledge in our safe secure homes and cities.

My uncle and i and he worked there as a civilian testing weapons, he said friends told him they use gorillas all the time and other monkeys, none of the gorillas were big silverbacks only standard size 2-3 hundred lbs all raised in captivity. However we didn't know that type of testing was long gone animal activist stopped it. My brother and I had a similar incident to Jeremy's werewolf, in Utah, in the late 1980s, but whatever the thing was, it was even more aggressive, and actually hurled a large rock at our car before racing at us, on a dark night and a winding road, complete with deadly drop offs. The fact that we were in a ragtop made the scenario that much scarier; the thrown rock hit our windshield and bounced sideways, leaving a spiderweb of cracked glass, and it crossed our minds that we were e tra vulnerable without a metal canopy. Both pacifist animal lovers, neither of us would ever harm anyone or anything, except, we discovered, in self defense; we spoke not a single word, but the message that passed between was clear: Get out of this alive. We couldn't back up, so instead accelerated forward, as fast as the winding road allowed; too fast, and we would have plummeted down hundreds of feet, while too slow would have given the creature a quicker opportunity to get to us. We kind of smacked it as it ran into us, but not hard enough to knock it down, or over the cliff; we kept going until it disappeared in the rear view, and until we hit a small town. Ten years ago, on Christmas Eve, we talked almost all night, having had a falling out for a few months, and talked about that incident for the very first time in decades; right after we got into town, we talked about what had happened, like trying to figure out what the thing was, but then didn't mention it again, ever, for whatever reason. We couldn't decide if it stopped because of our aggressive (as possible) response, or if it realized we were leaving as quickly as possible. My brother died just hours later, and I'm more than grateful we made up, as well as having discussed that event, and we were both surprised by the other's complete recall of that night. I'm still not sure what it was, but we were both certain it wasn't anything we'd ever seen before, in person, photos, or videos, and neither of us saw anything like it ever again.

The giant wolves & werewolf sightings can easily be explained by the possibility that Dire wolves aren't actually extinct, they're simply so few in number and keep to these remote areas humans typically don't frequent. Since we do not know their behavioral norms, it is also possible that, like bears, they lift up on their hind legs to make themselves appear larger when they feel threatened. Mackenzie wolves - a subspecies of timber wolves have been known to reach 200 pounds and be the size of an average human man - it is also possible that dire wolves and other wolves like timber wolves created an unknown/undiscovered subspecies as well. It's the pre-discovery argument of panda bears all over again.

Perhaps the reason there are similarities in so many cultures has to do with the fact that the human species originated in the same place and then spread over the world. May-hap many of these similar stories are just the evolution of an age old shared history that has evolved in different directions regionally. Large wolves did, in fact, exist during early human history.
Could also be due to biased interpretations/recordings. For example, Roman depictions of Druids, or how Rome treated other cultural deities as variants of their own rather then distinctly unique creations. (That doesn't mean those gods had a shared background originally.)

A few factors though. Once you're in some wilderness area with bears or mountain lions, generally you can't assume people being at the top of the food chain all the time. Wolves too, if there's an established and well-coordinated pack living in that area. Any of those can definitely snatch a person up if they're not aware and get ambushed.
Other than that, elk, moose, and buffalo can totally rofl-stomp somebody if they're in a bad mood. If that gets followed up by any scavengers, there may be little left to show of somebody.
Still in the category of animals, wolverines and badgers can wreck a person with a ferocity that doesn't match their size. Take the presence of those seriously as well and give them space if aware.
Terrain and weather definitely presents real threats, but you generally mitigate that by staying on trail. This doesn't seem to account for all the missing-411 type cases though.
Last but not least, other people. You're away from where there's any regular or quick law enforcement, and you can get a few deranged souls that have no qualms about murdering for whatever reasons. Could be anything from wandering into the territory of an irl murder-hobo and doing something that upsets them, or something about you strikes the fancy of a serial killer. If there's scant to no evidence or the MO isn't obvious, then they can get away with whatever they do in the woods unimpeded.
If you're somewhere far enough into nature on your own, then having some means to defend yourself is never a bad idea.

Thought the trip one was pretty crazy, here's my thoughts:
    - Siren was likely a forest fire watchtower or something of the sort (possibly a weather station)
    - Most hallucinations were 100% side effects of the mushrooms
    - Aside from hallucinations, psilocybe mushrooms also can cause color exaggerations (could explain the white dust)
    - The reason the dealer guy went mute, etc (seeing scary things) was likely that the group dynamics had caused his trip to sour
I cannot explain the death, that could've been anything, and I could only imagine how traumatic the death of a friend & brother would be while tripping mushrooms.

Hi, park ranger here.* we close the parks down to search the woods for people hiding stuff as well as to make sure stuff is safe to reopen. If we allow the parks to be open 100% threw the year we wouldn’t be able to make sure no one is hiding out, or that predator animals are not over populating. It’s kinda hard when people are hunting or hiking and camping. Also, it’s hush hush cus some people hide stuff out here like drugs and other things that could be sick and perverse so letting em know that where looking for em makes things harder. Imagine a live stream of police looking for someone on the run. Makes no sense right? Long story short we close parks to take a fine comb threw it once in awhile. Like you would spring clean your house.

I grew up in WA, we as a family visited my parents home state where extended family still live today. I once had to park off the road near the West entrance of Yellowstone National Park because we didn't get there in time to enter and find and secure a protected tent site. During the night my vehicle was shaken, because of the many micro earthquakes I have always been able to feel, I ignored it until one of my children woke up starting to freak out. I remembered quickly the stories told by my extended family and told my daughter to calm down and play dead, at that point I looked up to see two glowing yellow green eyes about seven and a half feet high, dark and heavy figure and hearing a huffing growling sound all the while the car was still being rocked. I prayed in my head that what I figured to be a Grizzly bear would get bored and leave us alone. God heard my prayer and as quickly as it began it ended. When dawn came after the incident I saw faint scratches on my car's roof and the trunk lid. I asked our companions if they heard or felt anything, they reported that they had felt some rumbling but not very long. I tell the story in more detail and people freak out even more to find out my other daughter didn't hear or see anything she slept through the ordeal. There's many other interesting things I have witnessed in my life, if I share them people who don't have ability to use more than 10% of their brains think people like me are crazy, other people have had similar events happen to them so I know I am not alone.

There were weird noises or just odd occurrences in a waterfall in Oahu. Eventually a wildlife park ranger came to check it out. Went to the waterfall and looked down at the water and saw a giant water dragon spirit shoot out from the water below and go straight into the sky. Since he had to record what he saw - his observance is documented in the police files somewhere in Oahu. I think there was a decision to not release it into the news but that story sat with me and gave me a sense of peace.

The story of the group that had the mushroom trip from hell reminds me of the movie " Synchronic ". It's about a DMT like designer drug that sends the user to an unknown time and place for the length of the drug's effect...like a portal. I'm one that believes if " they " made a movie about it.....it has probably happened to some extent.
To me, the story of "Synchronic" seems possible as I have had experiences with DMT and thats the best way to describe it....a portal. So maybe those mushrooms had been altered in some way genetically and opened a door to God knows what??? Just a thought.

They probably ate a lot of really good mushrooms. Like I remember when Anders said the guy was covered in Ash, I immediately thought this guy is not going to be covered in anything when they find him. Because I've seen people change different colors when I've been on mushrooms before. And then their color comes back to normal after the trip is gone. Must have been some really good mushrooms. It's still a strange story and I'm going to have to look up more about it.

I remember a young man who went missing from Cherokee. He was seen on video leaving a motel in Cherokee with a backpack on. He later was reported missing by his family.. a park ranger at Ocunalufty remembers a young man asking her to keep an eye on his car he was going hiking, should be back in a couple of days.
He never returned. Fast forward approximately 18 months later. A young couple were on one of the trails and pass a young man in shorts t- shirt, no shoes, dirty on the trail. They thought it odd but didn't really think anything about it. A few hours later on a different trail they came upon a backpack. The backpack was sitting in the middle of the trail, looked almost new. Inside was a wallet with 5 thousand cash, watch, other personal items....
They turn it in to one of the
Ranger offices...........it belonged to the guy missing from Cherokee, but it had been almost 2 years....
Was the guy they passed the missing guy? Was the guy they saw the missing guy?......

I got woken up and followed by a bear in the Appalachians for like 7 miles last year. Just wouldn’t leave me alone because I had picked up a grocery bag full of trash along the hike. It woke me from my hammock sniffing my stuff out and I was super shaken and scared it to a distance. Luckily in an area with cell service, so I was on the phone with family the whole hike back.
Another time I was in the Desolation Wilderness west of Tahoe. Was on the west side in Eldorado Nat’l Forest and hiked several miles until I hit wilderness. Kept going, even though no trail (I had a game plan, familiar with the maps, nav gear, etc and feel very confident in my land navigation skills). About 2 miles into the Wilderness though I could swear I was being pushed out. Dead silent, no animal noises or wind and I just had this skin crawling feeling that people weren’t supposed to be there. I’ll throw a bit up to nerves but I adventure A LOT and know a bad feeling when I get one. I’m not that superstitious, but I hadn’t seen a single person all day and felt like I needed to leave, so I did. Lots of history in the Sierra, who knows what you’ll find..

you know what's crazy, is I have camped the Uintah's my entire life where one of the stories is from, and have definitely heard and seen some weird stuff up there, two things come to the forefront of my mind, first was personal, I remember one year I was camping with my family and a friend and there was a "bear hunter" that was driving around but dude had a lot of equipment and a ton of dogs with him, it was slightly off-putting due to the fact that neither me or my family (my family has herded sheep up there since the early 1900s) had ever seen one up there. Well, I think it was the second or third night there I could hear something running around up near the road, which was about 20 yards from the camp, and then suddenly it howled/screamed I have never heard something like that before or after the incident it sounded like and animal and a man mixed together, that was actually the last year I ever camped up there in a tent.
lastly my grandpa in his youth while taking care of the sheep was stalked by something in the woods by either the biggest mountain lion he had ever seen or something that was not just an animal.
so, if yall ever find yourself camping up left or right fork canyon (it's up Spanish fork canyon just after the chevron. just be careful.

My brother in law went on a fishing trip in California with his brothers and a few friends, all men. The sun had set already as they were driving back from a big lake in two trucks dragging two boats. They lived in the San Joaquin Valley and I believe this lake they went to was quite a drive away. They were leaving the parking lot and probably driving through the windy roads of the lake. It was pitch back. As they were driving on the road still in the vicinity of the lake their high beams illuminated what looked like a person walking on the side of the road. They were thinking who could be walking this late on the road? The person was walking on the left side towards the position they were leaving. Never mind the fact that this person was walking in pitch black without a light. As they drew closer they realized it wasn’t a person at all. It’s eyes were reflecting the light from their headlights back at them like how an animal’s would. It was a creature standing up and walking like a human, had a snout, it’s whole head was like a canine’s. It was really hairy and it had its hands up to its head shaking it’s head. Not seeming to mind them until they passed by it and it turned its head to look at them. The first car saw it first and then the second car. They were able to confirm that the men in both cars saw the creature. They all remained quiet about it until they got home.😮

As a backpacker, lone backpackers are scary to me. I’ve slipped getting water or just sat on a long and fell off when I got up and if you do that in the wrong area, you can fall down and get stuck somewhere no one will see you at all. I am very familiar with the area the first guy went missing in, and there are rocky crags you can fall in, or even get swept away in a river and get stuck in white water areas. Or just fall down a hill and get stuck at the bottom hurt bad and no one would be able to see you past any brush. You wouldn’t think of it, but it’s very very easy to get lost or even walk a few yards away, and lose track of your group. That area is huge and there are plenty of places people just can’t get to or see easily out there.

I also love hiking and camping. It's hard to explain how scary it can be out in the middle of nowhere by yourself, or even with a few friends. After about two hikes alone, I also started carrying multiple weapons, haha. Scary stuff happens in the mountains.

Why isn’t no one talking about the kids on shrooms? That whole experience is jaw dropping! i was totally dumbfounded at the end, where the dealer went missing never to be found! & the sister doesn’t recall picking anyone up?
As for Simon u kno how the girl said she seen native Americans walking, what if Simon had that white dust kinda looks like paint u know how the native Americans would have all over their body and face? What if it was that??
Man at first I was thinking these kids are tripping hard! but at the end how none of the stories are adding up.. what if they did disrespect the land of the native Americans and they did something to Simon that’s why they found him like that? And that sound was kinda like a alarm that they do? Ugh idk but this story was just so interesting! I wish there was a interview on the kids or a documentary on them.. doesn’t help that they were on shrooms but to say Simon didn’t take anything? man, this is all a mind fuck.. crazy how they seen the native Americans and it is there land..

I was taught the natural wilds were not your friend, and can wound and kill you. They allowed you to visit, going solo wasn't wise no matter how adept you think you are and you had better understand what to take, what to wear, where you are going , when and how to run and how to protect and defend yourself while doing so and remain vigilant to danger at all times and with every step, your life was in your hands.

@@frankG335 yeah if you have no idea what you’re doing you don’t belong in the woods. If you want to go into the woods learn what your doing, take classes, read books, watch UA-cam videos, start with small short excursions and build to long overnight stays. The woods are dangerous to those who don’t respect them, and that don’t prepare for them. That could be said if Times Square though to it’s kind of a common sense thing, well it used to be any way.

@@syskusa6512 Isn't that a bit of a contradiction from your first statement? If Nature isn't that dangerous why would someone who had no training 'not belong there'? The answer is that there are dangers for those who don't understand the risks and dangers inherent in negotiating a place that is unmanaged and contains wild animals. Ergo, Nature IS dangerous.

Cities aren’t dangerous at all though, but I’ll stay out here thanks. I am from the Appalachian area in fact I live in the valley and can tell you we are not lacking in animal life, I have even had deer chased by something into my backyard in Knoxville TN,! My dogs were going crazy it was daytime.it was the firstime having deer in the city! The nearby mountains are a very different story as bears are numerous and seem completely unafraid of people. Many enjoy getting into hot tubs and swim in Gatlinburg pools! However I recommend that you never approach them, definitely don't ever feed the bears. Most encounters are completely harmless, but we did have a school teacher eaten alive in our area of the smokies. Her and her husband had gone camping with the hope of time together to save their marriage, she had cooked them breakfast and they ate, he went upstream while she cleaned up and done a little fly fishing, he was returning to the campsite and heard aweful noises animals grunting and making noise when he saw them ripping his wife apart and eating her! They had taken all the recommended precautions and it was tragic. I would strongly recommend that if you venture into the mountains to go armed and stay together because you don't know what you can encounter. We also have panther bobcat and coyotes and wolves elk's and gorgeous scenery. Just be wise and never feed wildlife as once they get a craving for human food they will seek out people as a source of the food.

Having done search and resque in the BLW it is totally possible for a hiker to disappear and never be seen again and have no trace. This is also validate by the few cases where years later a trave is found and the hiker pretty much meet a natural death.

Regarding the Santa Fe National Forest, I know those structures are built by humans (I’m one of them) it’s actually something a lot of locals go up to the mountains to go do on a weekend for fun or to go camp in them, near them, or to hook up in them…also some hippies live in the forests. There are lots of abandoned buildings in the national forests too as many are old farms/land grants for farms. But yep, those teepee structures are made by hikers, and I’m one of them.
