Thanks for the video which demonstrates the dramatically reduced climb rate during the warmer months. I just got my PPL, but I’ve had a Piper Arrow (200 HP) for a few months prior. I live in the Reno Tahoe area and regret not getting a turbo Arrow or any other turbo single engine. It’s been fun to fly the NA Arrow in the cooler months, but it now it really does feel sluggish.

Not rotating until 65 was indicated was smart. Having 10* flaps in, I don't see how that would benefit you. Any flap deflection is drag that reduces climb rate.

I’m planning on going tomorrow morning and arriving around 1pm-2pm. I’ve only flown at 7,000 DA once out of New Mexico. I understand leaning very well. But this is the furthest I’ve flown since my PPL. I’ll be in a 160hp RV6 FP prop set up to cruise. Kinda nervous. I plan to stay higher as I’m worried about mountain waves coming in. Then departing go over the lake and circle a few times then leave. Might take off lighter and fuel half way home to be as light as possible.
    😅any other tips?
    Thanks for the video!

Starting ground school this summer, it’s my dream to be able to fly up for the day from STS and do some paddle boarding/hiking.. and then come home. Thanks for the video, please keep them coming!

@@dunno9 work got in the way.. lots of other excuses.. but I’m having a hard time pulling the trigger on it knowing my personality type and the complexities of TRK. I did buy a house and a boat up there, though. Video of that on my page.

Summertime DA in Truckee KTRK (5901 MSL) is often 10,000’. Normally aspirated aircraft really need to be closely flown on takeoff and climbout - for cooling and airspeed, there is no forgiveness as one gets when flying at sea level. Even in my SR22T I carefully watch airspeed and temperatures, and fly much more restrained climbouts.

For sure! The climb-out in Truckee and SLT in 01W have to be managed extremely carefully, with lots of planning before 'full power'. May times, my 160 horses will just stay on the ground and fly another day!

“It’s reliable if you plan to expect the 200fpm club rate”: It’s just that it isn’t all up to you. With even a tiny bit of thermal activity you could encounter downdrafts well exceeding your 200 fpm climb. So I would argue whether it *can* be done safely is a much different question from whether you will. Mountains are notorious for rapidly changing conditions. It’s best to pad your margins!

Well, this didn't look too bad, but, guess I'm not taking 3 pax in a 172 to KTVL, even in a 180hp Skyhawk we have in the club...

Hi Misha I noticed your in the KCCR a lot. I’m also local in the area. I’m looking to complete my ppl this year. Wondering which school did you go or have any recommendations for me . I see Pacific , Sterling and Oakland flyers. Any advice would be much appreciated. Love your videos and contents. Keep it coming!

Thanks Darren! I got my private at PSA and would definitely recommend them. Great instructors and a large, common fleet of 172Rs. This is important as your flights, generally, would not be cancelled due to plane unavailability. Good online scheduling - which is true for most schools now days, good facilities and most importantly, people. Plenty of instructors to do phase checks with. Good luck with your training - it’s worth it!

Two things: (1) Did you go North to I-80 and then back to KCCR? (2) FYI all of your headset mic audio is in the left channel.

    • @mtyukin
      @mtyukin  4 роки тому +1

Hey Mike. Yep - 80 all the way. On the way into KTVL we did the same thing, flew north, over 80, cut a corner south-west of Truckee, took the west shoreline south and eventually maneuvered for a straight in RWY 18. I hear on you on the mic audio - not sure what's causing it, but it could be annoying, especially when listening over the headsets. Thanks for letting me know!

A good reminder regarding density altitude. At least at Tahoe if departing rwy 36 you can climb out over the lake where there aren’t any obstacles.

I was shopping for my first plane in 1990. My instructor asked me what I was looking for. I said "172". She knew I would fly into Truckee, South Lake Tahoe, etc.
She said: STOP. I bought a 182. I have seen Bonanzas go off the departure end of 36.
    Be careful.

Hi Bill and Thanks! It's interesting you watched this one - I have a KTRK - KTVL video I am uploading in a minute. You're right, a 160HP 172 is not the right plane for the KTVL mission, especially in the summer. Day trip maybe, but not luggage, 2 people, etc. That said, I am learning to fly the 200 foot/minute climb for sure!

I thought it was flaps up take off? And it’s not something you would do everyday? Why?
