    As a film student i am always trying to learn something new,, with so many videos out there that are less than par it is easy to get lost and frustrated.
    your two videos have helped me tremendously with my d5100 settings
    there are too many videos with over dubbed music which is so annoying and long intros that i personally dont give a shit about. Your video is straight to the point and i applaud you for that. THANKS!

    I watched this video and appreciate your working knowledge of the DSLR for video. You are head and shoulders above the rest of the amateur crowd. What made me want to comment, however, was watching "Unforgettable" on your channel. Your technical camera and editing skills combine with your artistic skills to make video stories that are worth watching. Thanks from a professional still photographer

      Wow, thanks Harvey. I appreciate the very kind words. I don't see myself as head and shoulders above the rest. I don't use grey cards, green screens, or any Adobe programs, so I'm destined to remain an amateur buried in obscurity, lol. I suppose we really are our own worst critic! I just like to keep things somewhat simple, and I'm happy with that. Thanks again, and I'm glad you enjoy my videos!

  • @Prouisorsapientiae
    @Prouisorsapientiae  11 років тому +1

    The kit lens works exceptionally well. The key is post-production editing; specifically color grading/correcting. I would also suggest purchasing the 35mm f1.8 over the 50mm for a crop sensor DSLR such as the D5100. Good luck!

    Well, I also own the Canon 600D/T3i, and I much prefer the Nikon D5100. I know this goes against most other opinions on the two cameras, but I feel I am one of very few people who have worked extensively with the D5100 and gave it a chance. In the end, it's all up to you!

    Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I was also thinking about having an external mic because the in camera mic does not sound so good. Thanks for the H1 suggestion. I would definitely look into and the price is also looking reasonable. So you think the lens is good enough for making such kind of videos? I have one problem that if the mobile phone is closer to the lens then I can see the mesh gradient (don't know the technical term) sort of texture on the mobile screen in the video.

    i am having insane amounts of problem. I make fairly standard vocal youtube videos, and ive watched loads of videos about the D5100. for some reason, people that are shooting outside in absolutely next to nothing lighting are still getting a clearer, nicer image, and im in my bedroom and its the grainiest, most horrible image ever! ive changed all of my settings and everything but having no luck, although almost tearing my hair out

    • @Prouisorsapientiae
      @Prouisorsapientiae  10 років тому

      Christina Rotondo I watched your recent video, "Bring Me Over The Horizon," and I noticed you didn't have your exposure locked. It's really apparent during the shots where you are singing into the microphone. You need to watch my other video, "Setting Video Exposure On the Nikon D5100(Low Light/Low Noise)," to fix this problem. The grainy image is from not having your ISO set properly and locked in. When you follow the instructions in my other video, set the MAX ISO to Hi2 in the menu settings, and manually set your ISO to 100. Another thing to be aware of, is when setting your aperture, you need to go out of live view, and back into it for the change to take affect. It appears you are also slightly out of focus on the previously mentioned shots as well. I'm assuming you are using the kit lens set to f3.5 for more light? With the aperture set wide open, you will have difficulty setting the focus when you are recording yourself because you cannot adjust the focus with yourself in the shot. It takes quite a bit of practice! Let me know if you are unsure about anything I mentioned. If you need anymore help, just let me know.

    • @christinartnd
      @christinartnd 10 років тому

      ***** i cant thank you enough for actually taking the time to go into my videos and checking out the problems I mentioned ! I checked out a few of your other videos after I watched this one, and managed to lock in my exposure (thank you so much for that!)
      i'm also VERY out of focus in a lot of my videos, mainly because my "autofocus" doesn't like to work much - it'll usually focus once the camera has turned on and then the box will turn red and it will no longer work with autofocus. (this is something I am researching tonight.)
      the standard lens I use for these videos is the standard kit lens, so the 18-55 lens, but really what I want is some really nice depth of field but also having a fair amount of myself in shot (maybe a medium to close up shot, nothing too closer than the bottom of the frame starting from the top of my chest.)
      I do have a 50mm 1.8 lens that I am trying out tonight, but the problem I have with this and with many of my videos is of course the focusing. I do not have the chance to get someone to stand into shot for me, its just not possible. I dont want to keep my autofocus on, and especially with the 50mm lens, the minute I stand out of shot to focus where I would be standing, I lose that beautiful depth of field that the lens provides.

    • @christinartnd
      @christinartnd 10 років тому

      ***** slight update on the situation. so messing between manual and aperture mode I managed to get it to start to focus. I think the biggest problems with my focusing is basically the lighting - which i knew but i didnt know the extent of it. im currently using face priority mode . for some reason other modes dont seem to work very well, regardless of if my face is in shot or not , for example when im trying to focus products I am using. e.g. normal area mode and spot metering won't really focus an object, even when my ios is unlocked and there is light on the subject.
      problem im having NOW is even though my settings are on AF-S, AF-area mode, and metering, i thought it was meant to lock into place and not re-focus? however, it's still refocusing. have i perhaps got the definition of a single focus wrong? im finding it really hard sitting back down, running to focus. going back to the camera going back to sit down etc. it just doesnt seem in focus. is this the best way to do it and to stick it on manual? autofocus is great and gets it absolutely perfect but of course the minute i get up to lock the focus points it gets out of focus...

    • @Prouisorsapientiae
      @Prouisorsapientiae  10 років тому

      Christina Rotondo Using manual focus is the only way you are going to achieve your goal. It may sound lame, but find some sort of prop you can place in the area you will be standing or sitting, such as a stuffed animal or toy of some kind. You can then manually focus on that. Yes, you will have to re-frame, and re-focus for different shots. This requires a bit of planning. It's times like these where two cameras come in handy! Increasing the quality of your videos takes a bit of time and effort, but will make them significantly stand out! The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens. It may be too narrow of a focal length to use in your room. It depends on how far away you can stand and how much you intend on placing inside the shot as well.

    • @Prouisorsapientiae
      @Prouisorsapientiae  10 років тому

      Christina Rotondo For how many videos you make, it is probably a worthwhile investment for additional lighting. You don't need much, so cost should be very little. I would suggest doing all of your sitting shots in one go, and then do the standing shots all at once as well. You can synchronize everything in your video editor, and switch between the two different shots within your liking.

  • @film_magician

    This might be a dumb question: if I have my kit lenses (15-55mm & 55-200mm) does that mean I don't really need any other lenses - as long as I want to work with shots between 15 - 200 mm? Why buy a 28-55mm lens if I technically already have it?

    • @z125615
      @z125615 8 років тому +1

      the difference is in the dept of field. a kit lens, because of a (opposed to a fixed lens) variable aperture, will change depending on the zoom. if it can go to an aperture of 3.5 it will raise to 5.6 when zoomed in. I suggest a prime lens. 35mm or 50mm. they are fixed, and inexpensive. problem is they dont have a zoom. but i jever found that to be a problem.

    • @MrTommybadger
      @MrTommybadger 8 років тому +1

      Correct. You do not. Spend your money on lighting and lighting modifiers. You can't afford big lights so use the sun, it's much more powerful than anything you can buy. To work with the sun, buy a 4x8 sheet of rigid reflective insulation, leave one side shiny and paint one side white, use that to bounce sunlight where you need it.. Buy a black plastic picnic tablecloth to block light where you don't. Buy a bunch of plastic clamps to hold everything where you want it. Buy a couple of clamp lights and 5000K lights to fit them to use for spotlighting elements you want to emphasize. Finally, buy a couple of sheer white window curtain panels to soften the daylight on your actress.
      Learn how to compose your shots and you can now shoot anything and make it look exactly like a Hollywood movie because they use the exact same tools (though they pay much more because their equipment has to be more durable). If you really want to buy a lens, buy the Nikon 35 1.8....

    • @film_magician
      @film_magician 8 років тому

      Awesome. That was my thought process as well. Using LED 5500k lights, clamp lights on some tripods / c-stands, and using sunlight. I heard using a frosted shower curtain is great for diffusion.

    Would the kit lens be good enough for indoor video's and if so would I need a tripod to hold the camera? One more question, I know the D5100 doesn't autofocus the older nikon lenses, since I have some of the older lenses since I still shoot with my Nikon N8008s how hard is it to manual focus video's and or photo's and make sure they are in clear focus or is this just a use and experience type thing. Thanks.

Plus the lighting poles are closer to where I set up my camera that sometimes, the camera focuses on that instead of the action down below on the mats. You're very welcome! If you run into problems with noise in the shadows of your shots, try using the "Standard" picture style preset that is already in the camera, or use the custom style shown in this video with the contrast bumped up a notch or two. Good luck!

    Hey there....I applied everything you mentioned. The custom picture control, ISO sensitivity, AE lock, manual focus etc. Inspite of that I get extremely grainy video quality. Could you point out what more should be done. I have a kit lens. Yet, I think that shouldn't reduce picture quality. I see too much grains even at ISO 640.

      Shruti Doshi Re-watch my other video, "Setting Video Exposure On The Nikon D5100," and when setting the maximum ISO sensitivity, set it to Hi2 instead of 1600. You also want to make sure you set your aperture in live view, and then exit live view before entering again. You have to do this to allow the camera to take the aperture setting you chose. I hope this helps.

    Ok I managed to answer one of my concerns. WOndering if you can answer another one. So I managed to figure out renaming a setting. When I get ready for a shoot, how do I ensure that the next shoot is being shot with the unsharpened and near negative contrast setting that you recommend ? (Nikon D5000)

    • @Prouisorsapientiae

      You should be able to go into the information screen where you can change the white balance, exposure compensation, d-lighting, et cetera, and it should list the picture style you have selected at that time (which you can also change in this screen). Once you make a custom picture style, it will stay in the camera with the others until you choose to delete it. I hope this helps!

    Absolutely! The only "problem" you will have, is that 50mm on a crop sensor is a short telephoto lens. You will find yourself having to stand further away from your subject to get everything in frame. It's an excellent portrait lens.

    The Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 is my favorite lens. I even used it to make this tutorial. It would be perfect for a concert because it performs well in low light, and will capture most of the action. You could probably even get the entire stage in the shot in the front row!

    • @Prouisorsapientiae

      Ibn Fatota Yes, I use these settings for all types of recording. I would not suggest using this style if you are going over ISO1600 if there are a lot of shadows, as it will produce a lot of noise in the shadows. If you have a de-noise plug-in such as Neat Video, this will be no problem.

    Thanks for the quick response bro! Yes I too believe that the D5100 has less aliasing problems than the T3i. And as you showed in your video the censor inside the D5100 has a great dynamic range, just look at what you can pull out of those shadows! Truly amazing! I'm busy making a video for a friend of my who runs a barbershop and so far I'm really happy with the video quality that the D5100 delivers using these F1.8 Nikon lenses.

      I have very little experience with Apple, so I can't help much. The D5100 saves the movie files as .MOV extension which is an Apple Quicktime encoder, so I would think the files should load just fine.

    Great video, I have a d3300 and its the same method when filming. Another tip for recording movie is on a daylight situations use a -0.3 or -0.7 levels in exposure comp. because I see the semi automatic modes overexposure a little (with matricial metric mode). In low light situations maybe use exp comp too, with auto ISO limit 1600, the cam will not set too high iso and the less noise. All this with the 35mm prime, 1.8g. Thanks.

      You're welcome. Yes, you can use exposure compensation if you prefer. I prefer(but not always) not to which is why I usually choose spot metering and use the LCD to gauge my overall exposure. Thanks for the comment!

    Hi! I am seeing this camera (D5100) Without lens around $170 to $200 and his competitor Canon t3i is still in $250 to $300 price range, why is that? Is the Camera worth the money for video shooting?

    • @Prouisorsapientiae
      @Prouisorsapientiae  7 років тому

      I think it's worth it for sure, especially since you can just download the firmware patch that allows manual video settings for the D5100. The video issues are what have made the D5100 the underdog, but it has much wider dynamic range, and I find Nikon glass to have better image quality in my opinion. I also owned the T3i and sold it recently. I hardly used it.

    • @Prouisorsapientiae
      @Prouisorsapientiae  10 років тому

      Well, it depends on how low budget you want to go, and how picky you are with your images. For me, Marumi seems to be the best balance between budget and high-end filters. They are only a little more expensive than the budget filters such as Hoya and Tiffen, which is also seem to work pretty darn well (in regards to flaring, ghosting, color casting and tinting, sharpness, et cetera). Just make sure whichever filter you choose, uses multi-coated glass. I hope this helps narrow your choices down, Ron!

    Hello. Great video with great tips. I have also a D5100, amd i ried to make some videos using your tips. But that custom Picture Style makes, obviously, a flat image, and i am not being able to, in post-processing, edit the image to make it look good. Have you have some tips for the editing part? Of what preset do you use? I used a Nikon 18-200mm lens, by the way. Thank you.

    • @Prouisorsapientiae
      @Prouisorsapientiae  9 років тому

      ecobcg If your editor cannot modify curves, levels, or color, you might want to just try shooting in a Neutral picture style. This seems to produce the best out-of-camera video. That's what I use when I don't plan on doing a lot of edits later.

    I can't speak for the D3200, but I do have both the 600D and the D5100. I prefer the D5100 for many reasons, but the 600D is easier to work with when it comes to manual video settings. They are both well performing cameras, and which is better is purely subjective. Ultimately, it is up to you!

    • @Prouisorsapientiae
      @Prouisorsapientiae  10 років тому

      Robin Lynch That's a really nice lens! Honestly, I would never get a 50mm lens. On a crop sensor body it's a 75mm focal length, which is pretty much a short, telephoto lens. The 35mm f1.8 is very versatile, and more flexible than a 50mm focal length. Ultimately, it only matters to you, and what you plan on doing with your camera!
