    I am Brazilian and Tramontina is from my country, in Brazil on every farm or house in the interior has a Tramontina machete, it is a good product and a cheap price, Tramontina also makes kitchen knives,fishing, Traditional knives, scythes, shovels .... Items for the man from the field, for the kitchen ... It is great to know that other countries they like this Brand.. 🇧🇷

    The blunt tip is a safety feature. So you don’t ent up slashing your foot or leg. But if you know what your doing then sharpening it can’t hurt.

    Not really a machete guy but I am a Tramontina guy. The 18" Tramontina comes with me in the woods Spring and Summer here in NC seeing as I have lot of brush in the woods around here. Best machete out there imo. The thin edge bites deep, lending itself to be a better chopper than thicker machetes such as an Ontario. It's capable of batoning, splitting small logs, chopping hardwood like no one's business, you're able to do finer tasks although that isn't it's strong suit obviously being 18" but it will make some nice feathers. It will also strike a ferro rod and the 1070 will throw enough sparks to ignite some charred punkwood or cloth when you remove the black coating from the spine. Like you said, modify that factory edge and it could easily be paired with a pocket knife or small fixed blade, or even by itself as a one tool option.

    In Brazil the Tramontina machete is very common that I stayed very impressed with foreign admiration for this machete. In Brazil is the very common the machete will be sharpened using the sharpen stone and water. In this process the blade is remade. The area of blade is augmentated. The cut stays very sharpened. Generally the machete is sold without the sheath, because the price stays more accessible. The unique inconvenience is the handle that has not a good egonometric. If you use for long time, it does calluses in your hands. Then is necessary to use gloves. Congratulations for the video.

      If you want to keep the rust down to a minimum(?) [Some people like rust] simply clean blade (lightly sand) wipe clean with alcohol and wrap with paper towels splash a little apple cider vinegar to wet the towels completely on both sides and wrap in aluminum foil and let it sit. The longer the darker the patina. Simply oil the blade on occasion and the patina will inhibit oxidation for years... 😎👍

    Great video. I almost went out and tried mine yesterday. I've never cut anything, ever, with a machete. Maybe today. That looked like a high dollar belt sander there. Like I told you before, that Tramontina you sent me... I hit it on my 4" diamond stone some, stropped it some, and it's been slicing paper ever since. I know you're not supposed to keep an edge like that on one that you actually use. Thanks, John.

    • @JohnCapps
      @JohnCapps  7 років тому

      David West You can put what ever edge you like. The Tramontina's keep an edge fairly well, just don't expect it to shave after you've used it. I always keep my home made machete super sharp. Take it out, and use it, I think you'll love it.

       John Capps A sharp tool is a safe tool. I grew up in the tropical bush.. and everyone kept their machetes razor sharp. Having your machete that sharp helps reduce the chance of glancing cuts that can cause you personal injury. It helps the tool to perform much closer to how you expect it to. 1075 isn't the hardest steel, but it holds an edge long enough that maintenance isn't a bother, and some grow to find it cathartic.

    • @edsn5351
      @edsn5351 2 роки тому

      The Tramontina machete is sold without the sharpened point because is the way of to protect the blade of the impact against the ground. This is explication of the company. The ground could have rocks that with impact could do "teeth" on the blade. But, you can do the blade cut from the point to the and the end. As was explained, the machete is sold without a good cut. Then is necessary to do sharpen.

  • @instantsiv

    • @JohnCapps
      @JohnCapps  7 років тому

      I believe it's worth the effort. I don't understand why anyone would want to leave it dull. Most of the chopping/cutting is done with the last third of the blade.

    • @instantsiv
      @instantsiv 7 років тому +1

      John Capps Safety, from my research most people get cut by the tip on an overstrike/glance. I've used my tramontina a couple of times now and found that the unsharpened tip portion isn't doing any cutting when slashing and chopping. I'm probably gonna leave it unsharpened for now. I'll just carry a pocket knife or belt knife for a sharp tip and belly. This is my first machete and I have to say it's the funnest tool yet. Ching, Ching, Ching.

    @John Capps The machete can be used to cut short branches, grass, work where the tip of the blade will hit the ground, stones. A sharp tip would be more fragile and could break on impact. Nice video, you just won a subscriber on your channel.

    Thanks for the review, John. I was debating getting one from Lowes and now I will.
    From what I heard, the tip is left dull on purpose. Tecumseh mentioned safety reasons. Also, it's possible the tip isn't intended for cutting and is just there to add mass. Supposedly the sweet spot, which generates the least strain on your hand/wrist, is behind the tip. Terry Hale has a nice explanation:
    ua-cam.com/video/G42Cm0auilw/v-deo.html
    Of course, the great thing about such an inexpensive tool is you can profile the blade/handle to suit your needs.

    If you really want to improve your machete wrap the handle with nylon string then apply rubber cement all over it and seal the wood and steel then; add some art to the handle; make it your tool or your personal weapon. It will automatically tell everyone to keep their little rat paws off.
    Then sharpen it till it’s razor sharp so when you CUT HACK WHACK CLEVE YOU’LL know; DON’T USE IT TO SWAT MOSQUITOS on your legs.
    Man up; take the pain. The little mosquito will be gone in a bit.
    I use this machete for clearing heavy brush, cutting trees less than 6” in caliper and use it to trim hedges in long sweeping cuts. Boom; perfect every time.
    I don’t puss out and use an electric hedge trimmer like some trained husbands I see up and down the block; as long as my machete exists; you won’t see me in Bermuda shorts, thongs or using an electric hedge trimmer.
    Your sheath should have your two sharpening files attached, and an around the neck strap and forget the belt loop bs. Machetes aren’t supposed to be worn on a belt; it’s a neck knife. All you do is add a length of leather at the bottom to tuck under your belt to keep it from banging around. You swing the sheath out of the way and on you your back when not holding the machete.
    If you really want to get primal; you decorate that sheath with your personal symbols. No one will ever touch it; as it should be.
    Make a keeper on the handle to the case so it can’t fall out when swung on your back; duhh😳
    Only the moronic military will carry a machete on their waist like a sword.
