The Jungle people in Brazil use nothing but Tramontina. I have been working as a tour guide in the deep woods of the Pantanal and a Tramontina machete never let me down...great quality, durability and functional in the jungle. Good review.
Thanks for the video. I've been using Tramontinas for over 50 years and am just used to them. I figure a decent Machete and a cheap Mora Knife will pretty much cover your edged tool needs in a tropical environment.
I have both tram 18 inch wood and Ontario 18 inch synthetic handle. Tramontina is way better for me. As good at thicker stuff too without the fatigue. But if for war I'll take my Ontario military machete. Just file it stone sharpen it, oil it, tape handle and get a sheath and your ready to fight and defend. Ontario goes good with a molle sheath and a 357 mag revolver for camping and hiking

I would say due to the edge geometry the Ontario will be better on harder materials. So, if you are using it in North America, you are probably better off with the Ontario. I also have both and find that in my area, Washington State, the types of materials I usually chop through require that heavier blade and stouter edge geometry. BUT, if I was heading for the jungle, the Tramontina would be my choice.

Thanks for the fine points on machetes. Mine is a Martindale 460. It's just one they sell here on Saipan at ACE and I don't know how it compares to others. It came with a terrible plastic handle that had gaps which gave me instant blisters. I covered the handle with tape and now it's OK. Using a machete can get tiring. I was introduced to the sickle when I helped cut some vines. It's very light and has a razor sharp edge. It works great for light cutting and doesn't tire my arm like a machete. It cost about $5 at ACE hardware store. Note that I dulled the tip of the sickle because I kept piercing (unintentionally) various parts of my body with it. Cheers!

On the infamous Ontario handle--In the past, I always bought my Ontarios at army surplus stores or something similar where you can be selective. The handles I always chose were nicely rounded--they probably had less comfortable handles, too, but I didn't pick those. I made the mistake of ordering one on-line because the local place was out of the 22" blades, and I received the hideous square handle. A vastly different thing that requires modification. I also think the squaring of the handles is a more recent thing, but that's anecdotal. And as a former resident of the hardwood North, the Ontario was the best thing this side of a ham sandwich.
.....That was a tough decision to make and you did a very fair review of it . The lack of a sheath for the Ontario can be solved with the correct length of pvc pipe and a heat gun . There are several videos on UA-cam showing how to do it . Have not tried it myself yet but have no doubts that most anybody can . I already have a short Tramontina but I like your review so I plan to buy an Ontario 18 inch as well . No such thing as too many knives .

I don't own the Tramontina but I clearly see that it's reputation speaks for itself. I have yet to hear anything bad about it. Maybe I can't chop down hickory or oak, but, obviously that's not what it was made for.

Beautiful land, and good review. I got a 5 pack of Columbian machetes, they're a little rough around the edges compared to American machetes, but their functionality has impressed me.

Tramontinas are made with near perfectly machete steel - 1070 high carbon spring steel. I have dozens of machetes so I don’t always reach for a Tram but the steel ringing sound from a Tram when in use is my favorite.
I swung a 22 inch ontario knife for years as a land surveyor. We had leather sheaths custom made. Saw all others break in action. Never an ontario. They make a scary sound when a piece of steel flies past your head at whatever the supersonic speed is they part at. Most where sharpened improperly on a grinder to achieve that for sure. Ontario for me. Cheers!

Hi, I bought the Ontario and I have a question: what kind of wrap did you use for the handle? Or what do you think is the best wrap for this type of machete?
I prefer the Tram because machetes are suppised to have a little flex in them. They are used to strike hard objects and not cut flesh like a sword. To thick or hard of a blade could break. The only thing I like about an Ontario is for Batoning wood. It is more of a camp machete. The Tram is is used in jungles for clearing. The lighter thinner blade is made for that. Ofcourse, you can change the blade geometry on either to make it perform better.
I own an Ontario that has outlived several cheap brands. However the main criteria for me for a machete is clearing brush and that tramontina seems to be better for that. BTW, they're both American made!
The Ontario is more of a brute force machete (warfare minded)... so if it's the zombie apocalypse, where you need to mush zombie skulls etc... Ontario! You can make a pretty decent PVC sheath out of black pipe from one of the box stores, a heat gun & simple hand tools, fairly cheap that will last longer than the machete. The Ontario has a few benefits the Tram doesn't - #1🇺🇸 USA jobs! #2 Can be had in a sawback version that can reduce blade wear/sharpening frequency...#3 Better finish (rust resistance). If you want a faster, nimble machete then the Tram is the way to go in my fairly knowledgeable opinion. I force patina all my HC blades to reduce maintenance & wear. EASILY done with vinegars & or mustard. Simply wrap (clean blade, use 90% alchohol rub) dry & place blade in paper towels lay on aluminum foil, pour just enough vinegar to wet both sides of the towels and wrap in the foil and let stand. The longer the darker patina. (2 hours gives a dark grey, 5 hours on 1055 gives a near jet black appearance) Then unwrap, wash with warm water & soap, dry, then oil (I used vegetable oils) and let stand for a while before whipping dry. In the end you get a unique finish that will resist rust for a long time. ;) Chop on fellow Machete-teers! One for all & all for one! 😎👍
It doesn't seem like that particular Tramontina is available anymore. The new version has a wood handle, and no lanyard hole. If I'm wrong, I'd appreciate someone providing a link.
I have a 12” Ontario and with a good edge it’s as good as my Imacasa. The difference is it has the saw back edge. Rothco makes a great plastic sheath which also has a sharpener at the hilt. I am buying a tramontina tomorrow but if I had to grab one? The Ontario

Never mind. I found it. It seems that Tramontina sells both, their traditional wood handle, and a polymer handle meant to mimic the Ontario GI Machete.
I think the difference is in their History. The Tramotina was designed for daily work in Brazil. The Ontario goes back to WW2 and had to be available for use in Environments all around the world by US Military Personal, but not necessarily every day. And it had to be a little more thicker and robust, plus it could be kept in storage for 20 years before it was reissued. But I think that they used some kind of Excess Tank Tread rubber for the Handles! They Suck!
South Americans live with their machetes, and know how to make them. Tramatina is South American. The cutting edge geometry can make a difference, too.

Ordered an 18” Ontario for fun. It is a beast. My tramontina has the wood handle and is about 16.7 oz. vs the Ontario at 23.4 oz. Swinging around an extra 1/2 all day… 🙄
My opinion, if you have the time and energy to care for them, is to buy both, and use them for their intended purposes. They fit in the same sheaths. The Tramontina saves you weight and fatigue. The Ontario is more effective at processing hardwood quickly.

The reason for not sharpening the tip is that when you're walking around the jungle in flip flops and you have the machete dangling at your side it's very easy when popping your foot over something to catch the tip on your heel. It draws blood even without being sharpened. I had this happen three times in the first two days using the tramontina.
I don't think the Ontario was not going in very deep, probably because it was thick and the wood was preventing it from getting penetration.... even seems like a couple times but it bounced up off of the wood because it's just too thick
You know that the Ontario comes with only partial sharpened edge? The idea behind that is you can pick your favorite sharpening angle depending on primary use and personal preference. I'm betting you didn't finish the edge before doing the vid?
Condor makes a rudimentary machete like the Tramotina, but they charge $115 because it has a full size kydex sheath. Personally they should sell the machete with a cheap sheath, and offer the kydex as an upgrade. But because they don't sell the sheath separately, you're essentially paying 115 bucks for a Tramotina. Condor has fallen off.
Very good video :) just one problem - the tramontina machete is 1 max. 2 mm thick blade . The ontario machete is 2-3 mm thick . The ontario is more difficult - the cuting is easier

It all depends of the user and not the tool!! Even with a cheap harbor freight machete if you use it the way it is for it will do a good job. My brother in law used to have a sugar cane plantation 12 yrs ago back in Mexico and those guys didn't give a damn about brands!! OMG I only use an Ontario or a Tramantina or a Collins or a Gerber or blah blah blah!! There are even small places out there where they make machetes while you wait and really good ones but then again it all depends of the user. Lol frankly the way I see people right here in America so far I trust only a few of them with a machete LOL

Say Heah Gabie, Yeah I have a nice little compact Machete that was made by Battle Horse. But I modified it to near perfect match with my Modified Attitude. It's about a 13"+ made out of L6, Yeah, It's my Mad Hatter Machete. I also put a Scandi Grind towards the handle so I can draw cut cleaner. I got the idea from Colhane a UA-cam. It also has a rounded spine except for the 90° to strike a ferro rod. The whole idea behind my Machete as a summer long knife but I can also use it as a large knife. I set it up so I can carry it on my belt or Baldric Carry it. Infact I used this set on one of our weekenders and both complimented eachother nicely. Yeah, My Modified Mad Hatter Machete will be put to work alot especially as a summer long knife to clear through the brambles. I do have a Military Issue O. K. C. But I keep mine nice and sharp. I like mine better than a Tramontina because if the type of wood we have. Infact I also enjoy using my Wilderness Pal Premium Machete again because of the type of growth. Nice review. Here in my Country the tramontina chops heads easier and quicker. The ontario can't really chop heads off as good. I chopped 15 heads with the tremontina,only 3 with the ontario.
After Legitamus Collins went out of Buisness, Ontario took the "Machete" production over. Everything else is a knock off, especially after having been is several wars. Tramontina is just a coconut and banana cutter

Condor makes a rudimentary machete like the Tramotina, but they charge $115 because it has a full size kydex sheath. Personally they should sell the machete with a cheap sheath, and offer the kydex as an upgrade. But because they don't sell the sheath separately, you're essentially paying 115 bucks for a Tramotina. Condor has fallen off.

Very good video :) just one problem - the tramontina machete is 1 max. 2 mm thick blade . The ontario machete is 2-3 mm thick . The ontario is more difficult - the cuting is easier

, about the Ontario today before I seen your video and you are correct about the handle that's a pain in the butt but I chop some heavy duty wood and it went right into the wood I was very surprised and I got me a cheese for it for a $4.99 canvas I don't know I think I'm going to get me a Tramontina to USA or where cuz I like the USA

It all depends of the user and not the tool!! Even with a cheap harbor freight machete if you use it the way it is for it will do a good job. My brother in law used to have a sugar cane plantation 12 yrs ago back in Mexico and those guys didn't give a damn about brands!! OMG I only use an Ontario or a Tramantina or a Collins or a Gerber or blah blah blah!! There are even small places out there where they make machetes while you wait and really good ones but then again it all depends of the user. Lol frankly the way I see people right here in America so far I trust only a few of them with a machete LOL
yes that is the problem with the trinomtina it should be thicker a little bit.if is 3. to 3.5 thicknes i will be the best.

Say Heah Gabie, Yeah I have a nice little compact Machete that was made by Battle Horse. But I modified it to near perfect match with my Modified Attitude. It's about a 13"+ made out of L6, Yeah, It's my Mad Hatter Machete. I also put a Scandi Grind towards the handle so I can draw cut cleaner. I got the idea from Colhane a UA-cam. It also has a rounded spine except for the 90° to strike a ferro rod. The whole idea behind my Machete as a summer long knife but I can also use it as a large knife. I set it up so I can carry it on my belt or Baldric Carry it. Infact I used this set on one of our weekenders and both complimented eachother nicely. Yeah, My Modified Mad Hatter Machete will be put to work alot especially as a summer long knife to clear through the brambles. I do have a Military Issue O. K. C. But I keep mine nice and sharp. I like mine better than a Tramontina because if the type of wood we have. Infact I also enjoy using my Wilderness Pal Premium Machete again because of the type of growth. Nice review. Oh, I'm having a couple of my knives made that I help design. As soon as their made I will let you know, Ok.,,. p

Here in my Country the tramontina chops heads easier and quicker. The ontario can't really chop heads off as good. I chopped 15 heads with the tremontina,only 3 with the ontario.

After Legitamus Collins went out of Buisness, Ontario took the "Machete" production over. Everything else is a knock off, especially after having been is several wars. Tramontina is just a coconut and banana cutter
