There is no death barrier, so if you fall off the level you're softlocked and you have to restart. Have no clue why Crystal Frost is lacking the original music. Really kills the vibe of the zone. Other than that, great recreation. Ever since I played the Project AXSX demo several years ago, I cemented this as my favorite 3D Sonic game. I just love the idea of its concept and only wish STI was allowed to finalize what they had made instead of SEGA forcing them to restart multiple times for no good reason.
Not a bad job, what bugs me about Xtremes concept is that there’s almost no flow to the stages, like the Sonic games that came before it have a flow to them, this spherical design while in concept is kind of cool, I can see why it was cancelled and never revisited. It would probably work if it were like Secret Rings or Black Knight, in a more on-rails Sonic style game instead of having the freely controlling Sonic like this. That’s not to say they couldn’t have you reach secret areas or find secret items and stuff, on-rails would suit this concept a lot better in my opinion.
Amazing work. I don't think this would have saved the Saturn though, the Playstation was just a better option for the more casual player back in the day.
I wonder if the ROM can be made to take advantage of modern ODEs and their faster loading capabilities. Can the Saturn have more RAM soldered on to the main board (larger chips in the same places) and the game's code be modified to take advantage of it? (less graphical pop-in)
This idea just dawned on me right now. I’ve seen people making homebrew games for the Sega saturn. Why not we (the fans here) collaborate and make Sonic x-treme from the ground up for the Saturn? We could use some of the builds and images as references. I’m not much of a game programmer but I would like to see it happen sometime in the future.
I think it's fair to say that Sonic Extreme would have been very similar to Nights Into Dreams (also considering the fact that the Nights engine was being used, before being forced to stop development). This was a great demo, and I can easily see how awesome of a game this would have been. I'm impressed to be honest. And what's up with Red Sonic? Lol
This format actually makes a bit more sense than the Mario 64 formula for a game where you need to constantly be mindful of the slope of the ground in front of you
The fisheye concept would have been best suited to bonus stages. There is another video of this engine with a standard camera view and it looks fine. Sort of like a similar engine as Bug! But faster of course. I would have loved to play this as a kid.
Sonic X-Treme Unity is still the best and most complete fan remake, but this one is getting there, and on the actual Saturn! I hope we get new updates soon.
Hope the modern sound effects and music get replaced. There's an entire Sonic Xtreme soundtrack out there. For real the game itself is a cool concept but the music used is just wrong.
I think that I see why they decided to go on another direction, that is supposed to be a fast pacing game, but here only part of the platforms are loaded, so you have to go step by step, also the camera kind of limits the options for a level design, I think that it may have worked on better hardware, something that could keep bigger parts visible, maybe doing the same than on fzero and really limit thee detail of the textures, maybe using colored triangles like on star fox.
If not for the constant pop-up/draw-in that won’t let you even see where you’re landing (if you’re landing), I’d have played the heck out of this game! A couple more months of real effort fixing that issue and it’d be gold.
I salute the performance of having recreated it's demo from spare parts. but my feeling is that it doesn't look fun to play at all. angel jump, strange perspective, and where is the speed? which makes sonic R an episode much more worthy of representing the mascot on Sega saturn.
Honestly, I think one thing they need to change is the Poppin. I feel like they’re cutting off too much too soon like if you jump off of a high place you’re not really gonna know where you’re going to land because of a pop in is so bad.
This is great, but is there any way to fix some of the poly pop in? Mainly for the ground, the ground disappears pretty easily forcing players to take a leap of faith lol.
It's a shame that Sonic X-treme never truly saw the light of day, due in part to Sega of America's staff falling ill and Sega of Japan disapproving the project.
can we play it on dreamcast tho dunno if saturn games are compatible with dreamcast but i don't have the console and dreamcast is not so rare in my country
yyyyeah if x-treme was an actual thing, i think it would've successfully killed off or at least made the franchise dormant for many years glad we got adventure instead, as janky and poorly aged as it is
It would not, just like Sonic R did not. "X-treme would kill the franchise" is a slogan Nakabots throw around because they have no real reason to hate on a game that can be disregarded. Still admit X-Treme is not for me and I can't watch more of ten seconds before getting nauseous.
As cool as this is, it really convinces me that this fisheye 3D plat concept couldn't have saved the Saturn or competed with the other flagship platformers of the time. This would have required some masterful level design in order for it to work, to be honest. Awesome work though! The boss fight is a whole different thing, that looks like it could have worked for real.
I've had the Sonic Z-treme reproduction for around 1.5 years maybe a bit longer and been playing it on my Saturn. This looks pretty much the same, is this a new update or something that just dropped?

Amazing work. I don't think this would have saved the Saturn though, the Playstation was just a better option for the more casual player back in the day.
I see why, physics kind of make with me extremely sick
I wonder if the ROM can be made to take advantage of modern ODEs and their faster loading capabilities. Can the Saturn have more RAM soldered on to the main board (larger chips in the same places) and the game's code be modified to take advantage of it? (less graphical pop-in)
The 4 Meg ram cartridge was a thing
I have always loved the fish eye concept for this game. Glad you're keeping it!
This looks just amazing beautifull!!!
That creepy red being following Sonic everywhere is kind of... scary
Hopefully this doesn't end up like project axsx where we haven't had any updates for years.
This idea just dawned on me right now. I’ve seen people making homebrew games for the Sega saturn. Why not we (the fans here) collaborate and make Sonic x-treme from the ground up for the Saturn? We could use some of the builds and images as references. I’m not much of a game programmer but I would like to see it happen sometime in the future.
bro just quit xtreme, if this doesn't show you the core design of it was horrible i don't know what will
I think it's fair to say that Sonic Extreme would have been very similar to Nights Into Dreams (also considering the fact that the Nights engine was being used, before being forced to stop development). This was a great demo, and I can easily see how awesome of a game this would have been. I'm impressed to be honest. And what's up with Red Sonic? Lol
Everyone’s a critic. This is an astonishing attempt at what was a thing but a technical demo. Well done!
very cool, at the time this game was going to be sensational !!
This format actually makes a bit more sense than the Mario 64 formula for a game where you need to constantly be mindful of the slope of the ground in front of you
So much potential, it hurts.
Nice. And good luck to make it better.
Good effort, but....did Maxim (XL2) gave you permission to clearly modify his previous work ??!
It looks like Sonic meets Minecraft. I dig it.
I think this is a better vehicle for sonic in 3d then what we got with sonic adventure.
The fish eye is dope
39 seconds...all it took for me to get nauseated from the fish eye camera. Props to those who can play it and made it though.
An amazing recreation. But my mayor complain is that i dont like how modern sonic sounds and music are being used.
It just feels out of place.
This would’ve been a great Mario game.
No. Just no.
It exists, its called Super Mario Galaxy.
I'm confused. Is this an actual build but updated with modern sound effects or is this a fan rebuild?
If the awful draw-distance was fixed and there was more to the stages (like adding enemies) then this could’ve been a decent game.
The fisheye concept would have been best suited to bonus stages. There is another video of this engine with a standard camera view and it looks fine. Sort of like a similar engine as Bug! But faster of course. I would have loved to play this as a kid.
No wonder this game was cancelled. The poor draw distance makes it unplayable.
That's cool sucks the game was never finished. Looks like a cool game too
FIRE THE SOUND DESIGNER 🔥🔥🔥
Sonic X-Treme Unity is still the best and most complete fan remake, but this one is getting there, and on the actual Saturn! I hope we get new updates soon.
I don't like the fisheye spherical level design for an entire game, but it would have made for great bonus levels or a great Death Egg stage IMO
Looking good 👍
Hope the modern sound effects and music get replaced.
Everything seems to be loading very slowly…
Gotta play this. Let's get it.
If not for the constant pop-up/draw-in that won’t let you even see where you’re landing (if you’re landing), I’d have played the heck out of this game! A couple more months of real effort fixing that issue and it’d be gold.
Oh that draw distance is... not good.
I salute the performance of having recreated it's demo from spare parts. but my feeling is that it doesn't look fun to play at all. angel jump, strange perspective, and where is the speed? which makes sonic R an episode much more worthy of representing the mascot on Sega saturn.
Sega should have tried a 2.5d like pandemonium instead of 3D
Honestly, I think one thing they need to change is the Poppin. I feel like they’re cutting off too much too soon like if you jump off of a high place you’re not really gonna know where you’re going to land because of a pop in is so bad.
My emulator only shows a static voxel logo
This is great, but is there any way to fix some of the poly pop in? Mainly for the ground, the ground disappears pretty easily forcing players to take a leap of faith lol.
My brain is trying to register the fishbowl lens … ouch
It's a shame that Sonic X-treme never truly saw the light of day, due in part to Sega of America's staff falling ill and Sega of Japan disapproving the project.
Don't forget the douchebag.
That's because of yuji naka. He threatened to leave sega because they were using the nights engine
can we play it on dreamcast tho
dunno if saturn games are compatible with dreamcast but i don't have the console and dreamcast is not so rare in my country
No.
sadly not, the yabause dreamcast port looks like it runs like dogcrap too
yyyyeah if x-treme was an actual thing, i think it would've successfully killed off or at least made the franchise dormant for many years
glad we got adventure instead, as janky and poorly aged as it is
Adventure jank is the fun kind of jank at least.
@@MariusUrucu Adventure* is fun* but yeah the jank makes it so endearing
this fisheye effect just makes me nauseous
It wouldn't, but whatever you say
It would not, just like Sonic R did not.
"X-treme would kill the franchise" is a slogan Nakabots throw around because they have no real reason to hate on a game that can be disregarded. Still admit X-Treme is not for me and I can't watch more of ten seconds before getting nauseous.
@@mkge7206 "Nakabots" Please go outside for fucks sake man
As cool as this is, it really convinces me that this fisheye 3D plat concept couldn't have saved the Saturn or competed with the other flagship platformers of the time.
This looks pretty much the same, is this a new update or something that just dropped?
hard to say which would've been worse, having no mainline sonic during the saturn, or having this as the mainline sonic on the saturn.
not a criticism of this work here, just sonic x-treme was very poorly concieved
Sonic, are you experimenting with 3d, again?
If you have to, imitate Bug!
