Thank you so much. Complete beginner to music production in general and was stuck with the lowest gain on my mic wondering why my recorded vocals sounded so low. It was a setting I used with ASMR a lonnng time ago.

Very nicely explained mate. I however, still don't understand what the volume level knob in cakewalk does because to me it seems more of a 'change volume of the output speaker 'rather than changing the volume level of the recording from the mic. Because there's another knob that changes the volume level of the output but i don't get how it's different from the volume level of the mic.

Hi, in hindsight I probably should have made it clear in my video that when you arm the track the track volume meter changes from an output meter to an input meter (and vice versa).
The track volume knob changes the track output volume (including any fx on the track) of the recorded sound and is the same control as the volume level on the track header (moving either one changes the other as well). The track header also has a gain level, which can be used to change the volume of the recorded sound only (so changes the input volume to the track fx).
The volume knob on the master track changes the volume of the whole mix.

@@IbandUK Really appreciate the help man, this really helps. But is there any real difference between the Gain knobs and the Volume knobs? to me they behave the same way

Hi, a little experiment for you.
Record some sound to an audio track.
Now add the sonitus compressor to the audio track fx section.
With the sonitus compressor window open, watch the input level (left side of window) and move the gain level. You should see the input level change when you change the gain level.
Now move the volume level. You should see that the input level does not change when you change the volume level.
So basically the same as the difference between the pre amp gain knob and volume knob on a guitar amp.

Is there no way to set the input level if I dont have an audio interface and I am using a usb mic to record vocals?

Hi, for USB microphones, type "sound settings" into the search box next to the Windows Start icon (bottom left of the screen) and scroll down to the input section on the pop up window. Select your USB microphone as the input device, then click on Device Properties. Click on Start Test, and sing into the USB microphone. The volume level should now appear as a dark blue line on the blue line just above where it said Start Test. Drag the marker on the line to the right to increase the input volume or to the right to reduce it. When you are happy with the record level click on Stop Test.

@@IbandUK thanks, really appreciate the quick reply.i guess i was looking for something like audacity has for setting input levels(the slider near the top right corner that lets you set the volume level of the microphone)

The input level in Audacity is a remote control for the input setting that I explained, so changing the input level in audacity will actually change it for Cakewalk too.
