Sometimes I start to wonder what the hell I did with my life... Then I remember I was part of the people that signed the petition to bring back the HM-2
Boss is a cult brand. They created the amazing TB-303 which started multiple styles of music, the best drum machines- - TR-606, 808 and 909 and a lot of other amazing stuff! I like Roland. Oh, and the best hand clap pedal - Boss HC-2 (I just got one of those and can't be happier). What they need to do is to bring us WAZA 303,606,808, and 909!!! I'd buy all of them.
The HM-2 was my very first pedal, and I've got a lot of love for it as a result. When I first started playing guitar in 1991 or 1992, my parents got me an utterly clean amp with no breakup whatsoever, which was a problem for obvious reasons. They took me back to the guitar shop to get a pedal so I could have some distortion, and the guy at the counter recommended the HM-2 if I wanted to play metal. As such, my first venture into playing with heavy tones was with this beast, and I absolutely loved it. I eventually started getting into amp gain and ended up selling my HM-2 because I felt I no longer needed it. Later, when I had a better understanding of how things actually worked, I started kicking myself for not having kept the HM-2 to broaden my tonal options. When I looked into finding one, there weren't many to be had and the prices were ridiculous, so I put my dreams of reacquiring my first pedal aside. As a result, I'm really happy that they're reissuing a Waza version of the HM-2 and will probably end up buying one.
The HM-2 was also my 1st pedal. A Japanese one back in the mid 80's, I got for Christmas lol. It is hard to grasp the current love for this thing lol. I started building pedals a few years ago, and I dug up the HM-2 schematic, built it on a breadboard and said, nope, not going to bother making a circuit board and all that, it still sounds weak and stale (to me). I sold it for about $50 back in 1992 for a Metal Zone lol.
I’ve been the biggest fan of “Loveless” by My Bloody Valentine for almost two decades and only recently learned that Bilinda Butcher was using an HM-2 for that dreamy, hazy shoegaze tone. The HM-2 is such a stellar piece of gear, think of how many genres of music have become shaped by its tone. I preordered mine today!
This pedal is absolutely sick! Let's not forget the absolute greatest Ola video of all time, the Metal Zone review. Boss should seriously sponsor a video and make you a pedal ola!
Something that isn't talked about as often but I know many players who have bought one for this reason, is that a few Shoegaze bands would use the HM-2 as well, including Belinda Butcher from "My Bloody Valentine" (not maxed out obviously). Also Daft Punk used it in combination with a Tb-303 Synthesizer on "Da Funk "as well, this pedal is legendary.
Still have my original Japanese 1980 something HM-2 pedal, which came with a brass plaque stating it was the 3 millionth unit ever made. Still works like new.
The thing is, this pedal had a unique sound even when not in "chainsaw" mode, almost a slightly saggier/buzzier Big Muff kind of tone, use to good effect by JK Broadrick and MBV. Alas, judging from Ola's demo, it seems that the Waza still has the anemic output of the original and the Behringer clone, which is probably why a lot of people dimed it back in the day just so they could be louder.

On all of their albums! There's a couple really good threads on UltimateMetal where Dan Swano posted about the setup they used on Nightmares Made Flesh and Resurrection Through Carnage. HM-2 into a Marshall DSL50 and Marshall 4x12, and at least an SM57, Royer Ribbon, AKG 414, and possibly others all blended together for NMF, and for RTC it was the HM-2 with a Digitech GNX2 multi FX, with a Marshall amp and cab emulation on it. Fathomless Mastery sounds like it was mixed with a traditional amp tone, but there's definitely HM-2 on it. And they used a 5 string baritone guitar for NMF too, as a fun fact. Presumably a celloblaster
@@SuffyANX Wait, the Schecter celloblaster?? They were actually used on recordings? I wanted one for years but I don't think they ever made them in left handed versions.

Hands up anyone who remembers David Gilmour used to use one of these things? Recipe for a truly epic sound: 1 TC Electronic Spark boost, into 1 Boss HM-2, distortion on min, low end at 2 o'clock, hi end at 2:30-3 o'clock, into echorec style delay into HiWatt DR103 100W + Hiwatt 4x12 (add an extra 2x12 Fanes for that little extra special sauce). Guitar of choice probably a Strat but a Les Paul works pretty well. Retire to a safe distance (HiWatts carry a health warning - nigh on impossible to keep them under 110dB) and just let it all loose. Hallelujah!
The tone on the track at the start sounded so good! I swear maxing it out is a myth when recording the albums...
I'm soooooo ready for one of these!! And yeah you're going to buy one.... you know you are.
My favorite band to utilize this tone is Black Breath, killer crossover thrash/death/crust/whatever sound 🤟
Can't forget Gatecreeper!
Black Breath disappearing is one of the great tragedies of the 21st century. That band was kick ass incarnate!
I think black breath drummer got injured in a car accident or something. They were an outstanding band
@@FUXCOOLog yeah the drummer had an accident and iirc the bass player died. I hope some other Hm2 thrash band will take their place if we can’t have them.
They're fucking awesome! A diatribe was in mind after that, but that's really enough said.
As Louise drops off satan incarnate, he just opens it and says "oh"...and destroys everything! Thank you Louise for not hiding this from him. Could have just said no it it hasn't come yet. Lol. This pedal crushes!!!
Sorry if your hm2 didnt come with a handwritten note by a Japanese man about how you helped bring honour to his family then you dont have a hm2
ROCK! Damn I smiled through the whole video! I use to run mine through a Peavey Butcher back in the 80s... no noise gate, could turn it on until the song started due to the hiss... plan to order one immediately!
