This is not a rehearsal, it is a conductor lesson. In some cases, Michelangeli played the piano, but there are many parts where the conductor played the piano. You can see it in the video.
That´s sensational! For a moment I thought, ya, a domesticated Arturo Toscanini is rehearsing because the timbre of Michelangeli´s voice is similar to those of Toscanini´s.I have never heard him talking but once I plucked up all my courage, went backstage wanting an autograph after a marvellous Beethoven recital, it was in the 1970´s, as I can remember. So I got my hotly desired autograph, what a wonder. The Maestro smiled but he remained silent all the time. Thank you very much for this!
I got my autograph, completely silent of course, after his first recital in Bordeaux. He signed my score of the Brahms Paganini variations. And the next day he played a second recital - only to have a heart attack on stage during the Debussy Preludes II. Both recitals, BTW, were charity recitals for the victims of a horrible flooding of the city of Nantes and all money went there and played for free. Have never been happier to pay for concert tickets.
HOLY SHIT! i have been looking for this for like 3 years! i don't speak Italian but its just awesome to hear this musical god speak. YOU MADE MY WEEK! TY
God bless you Stockhausen! lol. this is such a wonderful rarity. I don't even care if i can't understand Italian. I pray this isn't ever taken down. : )
Grazie ! Thanks for this upload ! This is a good insight into Michelangeli's world. We can better understand what he was striving for...it is a very interesting document indeed
Well, obviously we hear the Maestro singing - not playing! It is Garben playing in order to know what he is supposed to do later as a conductor accompanying ABM.
I have the book written by Cord Garben translated in Italian with this inserted CD At the end of the rehearsal there is a recording of the Final full dressed rehearsal of the the K 466 which is even more phenomenal than the official recording. Especially the cadence and the use of "Colors". Stupendeous!. The biography is worth reading though. He realy preached his parish. It is very surprising that the NY time gave only a brief obituarie to this great men.
+David Burke...NY Times should be ashamed. After all their"idol"Horowitz went incognito to ABM's recitals at Carnegie Hall..apparently overwhelmed by the genius of this formidable paragon of the piano.
Sta correggendo Garben che prova al pianoforte? Ancora più affascinante! SI sente in ABM un certo accento lombardo. Ad un certo punto dice: "Ché poi viene un diavolerio qui e non si capisce niente!" ;)
Maybe u don’t know who is ARTURO BENEDETTI MICHELANGELI I could say that he is the God in the earth is the best pianist in the word Is better that pollini ruberstein eccc

Come far cantare il pianoforte meraviglioso grande Maestro
Emozione già sentire la sua voce... documento eterno
A fantastic lesson in interpretation, musicianship, storytelling, opera, and life.

Does he even need a separate conductor? This seems more like a master class (for the conductor) than a rehearsal.
First time I hear his voice !
I love his voice

9 years later responding to this, hope you’re doing well. I really want someone to translate this. I’d love to know what the maestro is saying.
