Is it OK to use semi-archaic words such as "alas" in the Common App essay?
You can use whatever words you want. Just make sure that you are speaking in authentic voice directly to the college admissions officers. Focus on revealing meaningful personal information to that audience. Good luck!
Do you have any advice about whether I should write a “sob story”?? It’s about my mom passing away but I’ve heard you should avoid sad stories because they will just think you want their pity. Of course I made a spin on it and wrote all the lessons that she taught me. It would fall under the essay prompt of how hardship has affected you. Also as a note, I am applying to many top schools like the Ivy Leagues.
So sorry for your loss. I think it would be good to incorporate the lessons and stories rather than just a emotional essay. Make your essay and qualities generally more positive. Hope this helps. Go to the ApplytoCollege on reddit. Its a gem.

Hello i want to ask if i should write my 2021 common app essay in paragraphs or should i just write one long essay with no paragraphs
You should probably write it in paragraphs, but this is not a normal 5-paragraph essay. You can choose to format it however you like.
