I worked for the largest a/c manufacturer in the eighties and the rumor about fasing r12 out was that it super freezes really fast when hit by air and crystalizes everything even steel and that allowed anyone to break into any safe or lock if it was hit with a hammer after it was crystalized. The ozone thing was an excuse.
I'm Sorry to hear that! I bought it from a friend who was moving away... for a pretty good deal... Were you able to fix the air conditioner? I just made a new video of evacuating the systems.. which is required, if this method doesn't work...
