That storm followed me from Oregon all the way across the United States to Kentucky I'm glad that you guys are safe but trucking is no joke during the winter time. Stay safe during the winter

Same situation during the spring. Still gotta runaway from the storm systems, especially if they are strong. You never know.may be a tornado around the corner. Spring tornado season is not too far away.

Still, I find this to be a guilty pleasure of mine to race across the country to beat storms or avoid them, kinda like racing "the clock" but if I fail, I won't get cited for it. Just a little game I play.

Watching that major December tornado, he was calling it street by street and giving you advance notice of which direction it was heading. Terrifying to watch his storm chaser's live stream as truckers were driving right into the path of the tornado. He is nearing 300K followers in one year because he is that good. @@tmo.48 Yea it was definitely a little scary 😂. We were getting off the highway and calling it the night cause the roads were terrible. We get on the exit ramp and go to make a turn that's going up hill and slightly banked. ( we couldn't tell because the exit ramp was pretty long). We slowed down in the turn to make it but lost all traction because there was 2.5 inches of ice on the road. Our trailer was empty too which didn't help at all. Next thing is our trailer literally was just sliding off the road into this small ditch. It didn't tip or anything but got stuck. We started throwing ice melting salt down and shoveling the ice away but that didn't help. Thankfully there was a big wreaker helping semi's get up the ramp just on the other side of us. So we walked over and asked for his help. We attached the steel cable to the back of our trailer and he pulled it out with his crane. After that we parked at an Home Depot, got some waffle house, and went to bed. Quite a eventful night that was.

Nine months after getting my CDL I was running solo Ca. to NYC in a COE Pete with a 3406B 400hp Cat. and a heavy Kentucky trailer in tow. On one run south of Chicago there was snow almost up to the hubs, drove without chains. Had to stop for fuel and call my boss. I could have gone on but he said park it, so I did.
There isn't a load out there that can't be rescheduled. Don't ever be in a hurry to get hurt. Dispatch doesn't want you to stop when you know you should? Piss on them.
    1. Safety First.
    2. Protect your CDL.
    3. See rule #1.
You screw the pooch whiles driving it's on YOU. If whom ever you're driving for acts or thinks they own your CDL, avoid the urge to feed your dispatcher his teeth; just empty out your cab and toss him the key(s).

The guy that I was driving for had other drivers, one of which who had been driving for Deon, our boss who was an O/O with North American Van Lines; Big 'E' Division, had a driver who drove for Deon for a little over 20yrs. One day, that driver went to Deon's house/office to turn in his paperwork and pick up his paycheck. This was after NAVL had made it mandatory for all of the rigs that pulled their trialers, both company and contractors, to have E-LOGS. That other driver was handed an envelope from NAVL Safety Dept. That driver asked Deon what it was for. Deon didn't know, that driver threw that envelope into the trash.
Two weeks later, that same driver returned to Deon; paperwork and pay routine and Deon informs that driver that has to let him go. That driver had gaffed off the Safety Dept., his paper logs didn't match his E-Logs. He was making .30¢/mile.
I found out that because I don't and won't do Forced Dispatch, I was making .15¢/mile.
Deon stole from me. Assholes who do Forced Dispatch steal from the drivers who don't.

Swedish trucker here. I've always wondered, do you put winter tires on semis and maybe even trailers in the US? Or do you rely on chains instead?
We just put on winter tires, and occasionally use chains if we get stuck. We don't actually put them on, though. We just put them right in front of either tire on the drive axle and eventually with some gentle throttle control the tire forces the chain to get underneath it and bam, immediate traction.
Just wondering how different it is there.
    Anyways, stay safe!

    • @dav8388
      @dav8388 3 роки тому +6

American trucker here. We just use chains when necessary, or required. Out in the Rockys mostly there will be a sign saying "when flashing chains are required". They will have a pull off area so everyone can do so. I don't know if we can even buy winter tires for a semi truck.

      No.
OTR guys can go from blizzard conditions, to clear dry and warm all in one day. So snow tires wouldn’t be practical. America is big enough to have a wide variety of weather conditions.
So we use chains to get us to those drier areas.
Or not. Some? Most? would just shut down and not risk the trouble. It’s usually owners that are more likely to risk it by chaining.
Company drivers are usually encouraged not to since it’s the companies property that’s at risk. Company drivers that do risk it are usually hard up for money so they’ll take the gamble.

In a lot of states chains are actually illegal, as for the tires, there are not winter tires (or at least they're not common) if we were operating in a country such as Sweden where it's snowing pretty much everywhere then I'm sure they'd be more common but you can go from the Canadian border to the Mexican border in a few days in the US so snow tires aren't really worth doing

We run the same tires year round, winter tires are not designed to be used above 55 degrees the rubber compound is very soft and would wear out prematurely in warmer weather, when we drive from one state to another its very common to go from a cold climate to a warm climate.

@@itsallovernow2929 we'll ya wouldn't be laughing since you are having winter tires on. If you drove in this icey snow without winter tires or chains once again your silly self wouldn't be laughing. Now how's that for a laugh??? Now if you come back with, you drive in this weather with bald tires and no chains then OK, you are SUCH the better truckers---wasn't that what you were trying to "imply " .....o the egos are thursty

In Minnesota we have snow plows and sand/salt trucks, but they will close the Freeways if it gets too bad.

Most of us regional and long haul drivers have to push through most snow and ice. But if it gets too bad I will stop. I know from many years of experience what I can handle and when it's time to call it a day. Luckily I missed that storm. Took a load from Ohio to the Philly area down 80 when that was going on so I missed it. But I do run through Virginia that way from time to time. Today I'm heading to Mass from Ohio and hit some lake effect along 90. Last week I did hit some ugly snow and ice going to and from Wisconsin. Not enough to shut me down though. Stay safe drivers

Meanwhile, here in Quebec, we worked in a 48h blizzard that left us 24 to 30in of snow depending of the region. You get use to drive in bad conditions.
