As an Olympus shooter for almost 12 years now, I've long given up trying to justify my choice lol. You said it, if the images work, who cares? Not every car on the street has the biggest engine and the most h/p. But that's what's fun, we all care for different stuff. Also, I absolutely love the look on ppl's faces, when I tell them what I've shot my images with 🤷♂️ With Hi-Res Modes and IBIS that would allow for seconds (!) of exposure, I'm all set for years to come. M4/3 is totally good enough to pay the bills and is super fun to use. Cheers from Sofia, Bulgaria 🤙
We have people shooting full frame and complaining about Micro Four Thirds sensors, but at the same time they are driving 1997 Dodge Neons with a 4-cylinder engine with only 3 cylinders working. . . . Even my Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II still blows my mind. Im so happy Evan did this.

As a primarily stills photographer, I have been using a full frame Sony as a 'backup' in the event I need high(er) resolution, but the reality is that I rarely need it. My three m4/3 cameras produce exceptional results, and I find that even the less expensive Panasonic lenses have loads of high quality personality. I'm a fan, and my next purchase will the that 9 mm. Nice video. Thanks....
Canon R5 user here but also part of the L Mount alliance and own a Sigma FP-L and LUMIX S5. All of those cameras are used for my pro work. For street photography and daily use, I use the Micro Four Thirds LUMIX GX9 from 2018 and the two lenses featured in this video (along with the Pan-Leica 42.5mm f 1.2 Nocticron) which are all Leica Certified meaning Panasonic makes the lenses but uses the glass, formula, and quality control standards from Leica..it’s one of the reasons why those images Evan made are so crisp (as well as the stabilization in the GH6!). Obviously, it’s not his beloved Q2 but it has some of that Leica DNA! Great vid Evan!
One aspect of m43 cameras that people often overlook is its bigger deep of field. I.e. due to small sensor size, you have more things in focus than on a fullframe. But the aperture is still open, so you get a ton of light! Granted, it's a disadvatage for some because bokeh isn't that nice, but you don't need bokeh in every photo! Sometimes you need everything in focus, and m43 helps with that =)
If you must absolutely have bokeh on wide angle, use an anamorphic adapter. Also the app focos can do it through software with some crazy wizardry editing skills. Bokeh looks real and has pro editing.

GH6 is such an underrated stills photography camera - because of the Raw files. I took test shots with my GH6 and GFX 50SII and compared files in Lightroom to see how much latitude I had while editing the GH6 files. If shot at low ISO the GH6 has very impressive results for how much you can pull the files. The "dynamic range boost" mode is optional in video, but is always on in photos - the reason for the impressive results. I think its like an automated exposure bracketing thats taking place, which is probably why it is impressive in low light. Didn't expect it to have almost as much editing latitude as a GFX camera in some scenarios. (Using GFX 50SII + 45mm F2.8 vs GH6 + 15mm F1.7, the GH6 was doing better in certain low light scenarios because of the aperture advantage + the magic Panasonic is doing with this sensor/processor. Pretty crazy. )

I bought a GH6 as a video camera, not thinking of replacing my G9 for stills. But the photography improvements on the GH6 are significant, especially the step up from 12bit to 14bit RAW, which even Panasonic's own press doesn't mention. I've also taken 10 second handheld shots (10 seconds!) that were sharp.

Big, big fan of the GH lineup. Learned to shoot quality video on the GH4, bought a GH5 to start my channel with the Olympus 12-40 Pro (a fantastic lens), and then went to the classic Sigma 18-35 with a Metabones speedbooster. The GH5 was a workhorse! I finally decided to go full frame a few months back, but I kept it in the family: Lumix S5 with the 24-70 Pro. Love Lumix.

Spent a lot of years and built my channel mostly using LUMIX cameras! First real camera was a G7, then G85, then G9; and I’ve now moved to full frame. But man, especially the G9, what amazing cameras; especially at their price-points! If I was more confident in their video autofocus and color science, I would go back to LUMIX in a heartbeat.
Rumors say that Panasonic should announce Phase-detect Autofocus in a few days (Jan 4); I am already curious to know more. Just for you to know. They're rumors anyway.
@@shmuelaryehkoltov241 The main three reasons for switching were: 1) Reliable video autofocus; Lumix had been getting better, and the G9 was good MOST of the time. But still didn’t feel like I could trust it the way I do Canon’s AF. 2) Depth-of-field; most of my work is done in a small-ish room in my apartment. A full frame sensor with a wide prime lens gives me the ability to make better use of the space I have available, while getting the shallow depth-of-field I need to create background separation in a smaller space. I struggled with this with the LUMIX M43 sensor cameras and their primes. And 3) Color science; I know Lumix is getting better and better, but I was just tired of fighting their mediocre color science. Canon’s colors are pretty great right out of camera, and don’t need much other than a light grade to get them to look the way I want them to. None of this to say I’m a Canon (or really any specific camera maker) fanboy (other than maybe Leica 🔴👀). Canon was just better suited what I was looking for at the time. If Lumix or any other manufacturer puts out a camera that ticks all of the relatively modest needs I have in a hybrid (mostly video) camera better than what I’m already using, and the price makes sense; I’ll happily switch.
I have the Z9…and it is truly awesome…but the GH6 with a good kens is simply stunning. Have done a lot of pics and video’s and am blown away with image quality!!! This is a huge step up from the GH5. The Panasonic colors, excellent menu’s, deep/mature feature set and ease of use is totally under represented and misrepresented by Sony youtubers/reps and others. The GH6 really is that good.
Totally agree with you! There is a proper tool for every job. I have a Z8 and a GH6 and love shooting with both. We live in a great time for camera tech.
Recently just sold off most of my full frame Sony stuff to get into om-1. M43 is fine you just sometimes need to use a 1.4 prime. Even in a dark concert setting you'll likely never have to go above iso 1600 if you're at 1.4. Current M43 looks just fine at 3200.

Thank you for recognizing the amazing results that can be had with micro four thirds. It seems like too many photographers buy into the idea that anything smaller than APS-C must not be worth bothering with. But, there are plenty of APS-C sensors that are no better up to about 1600 ISO, and JPGs can compare to some APS-C sensor JPGs even higher than that. You also hear the argument that MFT cameras are the same size as larger sensor cameras, but as you noticed, the LENSES are tiny. The overall kit is still smaller. MFT rocks.
Just added M4/3 to my secondary camera system with the OM-D EM1X because of the lens size and stabilization.(Plus its dirt cheap used at KEH) It’s been amazing so far. Can’t tell the difference between my full frame Canon R unless I strain. Plus you can shoot handheld at like 1/30 with no issues.

Just bought this camera. I am not a photographer or anything, just want to start taking nice videos and photos of my own cars for instagram. I am bearly learning the in and outs from it. It's overwhelming at times but I am enjoying finding new features about it. Started last month on a Canon t3i I've had for years and never really used just taking random pictures and people started noticing. So I wanted to get a nice camera for videos. I think I made the right choice.
So pleased you enjoyed this M43 camera and seem so enthusiastic Evan. Id love to see you try the Pana Leica 12mm f1.4 if you can get your hands on one.. That lens blows me away but also love the 15mm, Rich.

Even more so if Pana would revive their GX1/GF2 form factor. The GF6 was the last "usable" one, but they dropped the click wheel for a lever and aperture can only be controlled via the scroll wheel - terrible. Later they dropped even the lever... No wonder nobody wanted to buy that crap... . An updated GX1/GF2 would sell like hotcakes. BTW: anything with a tilt screen and built-in EVF is too big. Try carying around a Pana GF6 or Olympus Pen in a single hand - its were every mm depth counts big.
The biggest hope we have is for Panasonic to put PDAF (Phase Detect Auto Focus) into successors to the GH6 and the G9.Their S5 Mark II has it, and it is SWEET! I'm a long time GH4 user and I'm holding out for a GH6 II or GH7 with PDAF.
I've been using Panasonic Micro 4 thirds now for 5 years, there is some draw backs but if they're used for the right job they're excellent. The 15mm Leica lens is a beauty, shame you haven't used the 42.5mm Leica. Blows my mind every time at 1.2 .
Technically a µ4/3 camera is the right camera for literally any job, the drawbacks are 100% the user everytime. UA-cam alone is filled with videos of people using the system in the capacity that other people claim it is not able to accomplish… 🤔

Good concise video, like the big prints. Micro Four Thirds still surprises me with the image quality generally since buying an old Olympus E-PL1 a few years ago. Since then I've graduated to the Olympus E-PM2 and the Lumix G5 and GX1, both a few years older than the camera you were testing but both still capable stills cameras. And very inexpensive. The M43 lenses are one of the system's main selling points, lots of good Olympus, Lumix, Leica, Sigma, and other lenses and usually good deals used.

The first time I handled my first M43 camera, the GX7 with the 45mm 1.8 and 20mm 1.7 it reminded me of shooting on a old TLR camera. The 4:3 shots have the perfect aspect ratio for portrait and it is very easy to frame them to 1:1 or 3:2. The 20mm 1.7 equals the 80mm 3.5 of my TLR camera (40mm in 35mm) and the shots look very close in terms of bokeh too
Started on crop sensor and coveted full frame. Got a full frame in the Nikon d800 a decade ago but because of its size and weight, it never got much use. I would have to plan a photo walk to use it. Today, I’m looking for something compact for an everyday camera. My current 16-35mm full frame lens weighs more than all three of these items, I’m sure. MFT and the compactness of the lenses is really appealing
Or you can try out APS-C. Fujifilm has some decent options that are all weather sealed. Just avoid the premium f/1.4 primes and f/2.8 zooms if weight is of utmost priority, because Fujifilm weighs the same as a Sony full frame kit when it comes to high end lenses.

When the gh5 first came out I used it a lot for photography. Then, after awhile, I was told that the gh5 wasn't a good photography camera. Only video, which I also used it for. Eventually I moved on to full frame. Now, when I look at my gh5 photos I am impressed by the image quality in those shots. Pro level. So crispy. So rich. I know it's a different sensor from the gh6, but still, class all the way. I do need to add that I mostly used the Leica lenses. I know those helped a ton. I was never satisfied with most of the non-Leica lens output with that camera in photo or video. Also, I feel like I need to add that the name "micro four thirds" is a very poor choice. It probably pushes a lot of people away from the system. Just saying.

I discovered the M43 format when I owned a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema camera, which takes M43 lenses. I’ve sold the BMPCC but decided I liked the M43 format and now have two Lumixes (used). I love my little GM5 as a travel camera. It’s 16 MP but the body is hardly larger than a smartphone and I have access to a wide assortment of M43 lenses. Traveling with even a DX-format Nikon plus lenses in a camera bag, you stick out as a tourist. I can put the GM5, an extra lens, a compact pair of binoculars, and a iPad Mini into a small messenger bag and not be weighed down or look like an obvious target.
I’ve been using the GH6 about three months now. It’s been great. I have the G9 as well, but will probably get a second GH6. Did you have to send it back, or are you still using it?
LUMIX is great ! I feel like once you go Full Frame, it gets difficult to give these smaller sensor cameras a chance. And tbh, some of them really outperform and are super fun to shoot.
There is a misconception that µ4/3 is a stepping stone to full frame. I think you will find as many or more users of the system originally came from full frame. I am one of those people… I would argue that a full frame camera often indicates people are less talented. It is more impressive to see amazing images from APS-C, µ4/3, or even iPhones… Full frame often seems to be the defining feature of someone’s work, so much so that results look ordinary… 🤔
@@Superz3ro very true I agree. I like to focus on photographers that use point & shoots or compact cameras. You can really see the skill and creativity that goes into shots made by them. Moreover, they tend to capture moments you wouldn’t get with a Full Frame. I feel full frame is used to simplify the photographers job to make money, but most passionate or enthusiasts like to use gear that inspires them to shoot and have fun capturing images.

I consider my G9 a low light beast. I have both Sony and Lumix systems and the lower the light gets at night it is the G9 that gets sharp shots handheld, while the Sony gives a blurry mess. The Panasonic stabilization trumps a larger sensor. There is a lot of BS about MFT low light abilities from people who don't use the cameras for photography. There is good reason for the enthusiasm of MFT users for their gear.
Only experience I have with 4-3 is I accidentally bought a Japanese market only LUMIX camera and it was too late to cancel the order. Camera showed up with a second lens and I was honestly blown away by the little camera and lenses. The images were sharp enough to look fantastic but it didn’t have that fake over sharpened look like many cameras in 2023 do. This camera is probably from 2016 or so and didn’t even matter. The colors looked great and the AF, black and white, etc all looked fantastic too. I ended up giving the camera away because I couldn’t read Japanese (Japanese only and no other language options) but I still think about that camera to this day. The lenses felt really light and ‘cheap’, the photos were anything but. Heavyweight hitting and sure shocked me. To be honest, it reminded me a lot of looks to the photos that Fuji is currently trying to get their cameras to look like. I’m a photographer has been around for a while but zero knowledge about the 4-3 format. Can someone please explain to me the disdain and negativity towards this format?

I appreciate M4/3. New prices are too high. If you can score a good second-hand copy, you can't beat it for the price. Waiting for a 2nd hand copy of the GH6 to show up for around $1200-$1300 and I'll definitely pick one up. Until then ill be using my G9 (purchased for $500).
I just scored an E-M1X for around $850 a week ago, and I couldn't be happier! Gonna be using it as my main shooter, and I'll keep my E-M1 MkII for backup. M4/3 is a 100% working solution that has been delivering for me for over a decade, an it's still a valid option in 2023.

Thanks for the excellent video! I have the G9 and Panasonic 15mm 1.7 combo but I struggle to have good results in low light. What bothers me is the strong magenta cast in the shadows. My GX85 hasn't this problem. I am curious to know how GH6 handles shadows.
Rerally great video and very useful for me as I currently use the GH6 100% for video and a Canon R5 for stills (with the Lumix as a backup). I've not really stretched it's legs for stills and this has got me wanting to go out with it and see what I can get. BTW I use a Metabones converter so I can use EF glass on both bodies.

I've wanted to try 4/3 sensor for the aspect ratio and size of lenses. But reading about the complexity of Olympus menus and needing to turn off or manage settings that detract from image quality stopped me. Are Lumix menus any better? Easier to use?
My daughter has basically stolen my Oly EM III. Her rock concert photography is outstanding. Getting close to retirement I will be selling my Nikon and Fuji outfits and keep the Oly.
Regarding the size; that camera is bigger than a Fuji which is APS-C. Fuji also makes some very small lenses to go along with that. Why not just go with one of those then?

Nice video. Thanks....
I've never clicked on a video so fast. It's nice seeing creators I look up to trying new things. Especially Panasonic, the brand I love the most
Canon R5 user here but also part of the L Mount alliance and own a Sigma FP-L and LUMIX S5.
That 42.5 is the reason I still shoot M43. Its amazing.
Sometimes you need everything in focus, and m43 helps with that =)
ABSOLUTELY
If you must absolutely have bokeh on wide angle, use an anamorphic adapter. Also the app focos can do it through software with some crazy wizardry editing skills. Bokeh looks real and has pro editing.
"Fro Knows": Bokeh sucks
Me: DOF is wonderful!

GH6 colour science is the best yet, the V-LOG profile is absurdly nice, plus easy to use! AF is still an issue but a lot improved
Why did you go full frame, and how did it improve your work?
Rumors say that Panasonic should announce Phase-detect Autofocus in a few days (Jan 4); I am already curious to know more. Just for you to know. They're rumors anyway.
@@shmuelaryehkoltov241 The main three reasons for switching were:
1) Reliable video autofocus; Lumix had been getting better, and the G9 was good MOST of the time.
Love the images you made with this camera! Well done!
I too made frickin large prints of my dog using the G9 (before I sold it for the GH6) and the prints turned out great!

Plus you can shoot handheld at like 1/30 with no issues.
i can shoot 4 sec handheld with my em1ii at 25mm

The long exposure at 4.34, my godddd. So good
thing is mft has been 'about to die' for almost 10 years. its lasted a hell of a long time, and i fully believe it will continue to do so.
Some great photos there Evan! Really like the first two ones - very atmospheric - great job.
UA-cam alone is filled with videos of people using the system in the capacity that other people claim it is not able to accomplish…

The G9 is no slouch for stills, either. 🙂
Best review on this camera I've seen yet. Thanks for printing the images to show the real life quality of it. Great idea!

The 20mm 1.7 equals the 80mm 3.5 of my TLR camera (40mm in 35mm) and the shots look very close in terms of bokeh too
Nice one Evan, M43 is cool, glad you’ve found that out and promoted the fact here. Lovely shots btw. 👏

Well 43 lenses already exists so they called it MFT LOL
I knew I recognized some of those spots... I'm loving that long exposure of I75! Hope the weather didn't hit you too bad down there in ATL.
Those are stunning photos.
I am one of those people…
I would argue that a full frame camera often indicates people are less talented. It is more impressive to see amazing images from APS-C, µ4/3, or even iPhones…
Full frame often seems to be the defining feature of someone’s work, so much so that results look ordinary…
🤔

I just scored an E-M1X for around $850 a week ago, and I couldn't be happier! Gonna be using it as my main shooter, and I'll keep my E-M1 MkII for backup. M4/3 is a 100% working solution that has been delivering for me for over a decade, an it's still a valid option in 2023.

Evan, I absolutely love these night shots. Not sure if you've been asked to do this already. But I would really welcome a video from you showing your edits of a couple of these images. Especially how you got the wonderful colours, the beautiful "teal" tinted skies in particular. Yours hopefully. Stephen.
DUUUUUDE!!! Those shots are 🔥🔥🔥!! I fuckin missed your Street work!!!

I use both FF and MFT daily and make a living as a RE photographer. The Panasonic system is great. My camera bag has all the lenses I could possibly need. The in camera noise reduction for the jpgs works really well. Topaz AI and the new noise luminance noise reduction in LR also work well.
Cool shots of the varsity bruh
Wow... wasn't expecting that!?! But I can easily relate to the fact that you can use Lumix cameras without knowing them very well! They are very intuitive from my point of view. And the images you took look great! I also like the compactness of the lenses. What was the "feeling" of using this camera? Does it felt like a tool or was it actually fun? ;-) Any thoughts compared to your SL?

Finally got to be the first to like your video 😂
I was 24th Wess 🎉 I still use an Olympus Pen F micro 4/3 camera from 2013 .. still working well for street but I do like the look of this G6 that Evan is using
@@alanmonkartist that’s amazing ! Call me crazy but I sold my Z7 and bought a little RX100V haha. No regrets at all haha
@@wessamhamadneh9877 I love the Sony RX cameras.. I often contemplate 🤔 getting one but I currently have a ZV1 mostly for video 😎

I’m just starting out in street photography, and was recommended a LUMIX DMC -G7 as a beginner camera, which camera and lens would you recommend.
BTW your channel help start this new journey into street photography, love you work and videos, also picked up a couple of the books you talk about and plan on getting yours next.

I absolut love M4/3. I shoot a g85 with a 12-45 olympus pro 4.0 and its the best combo i try so far:-)
sick results
My daughter has basically stolen my Oly EM III. Her rock concert photography is outstanding. Getting close to retirement I will be selling my Nikon and Fuji outfits and keep the Oly.
Regarding the size; that camera is bigger than a Fuji which is APS-C. Fuji also makes some very small lenses to go along with that. Why not just go with one of those then?
Bro, this fog has been wild. I haven't seen the tops of most of our buildings but a couple of days in the last month lol. Awesome shots!

Any tips on settings for a beginner?
The difference is even more obvious when it comes to wildlife photography, I’m shouting the OM-1 and my mate is using his A9, same position same distance, I can use much lower shutter speed and my images are much cleaner than his and he is surprised how good m43 cameras can be.

Smaller sensors work better in low light??
Trying to decide on this or the sony fx30
I have a 17.5 Voigtlander .095 it’s unbelievable in low light on my GH 5.Try you’ll love it. but I definitely want to get the Gh6 soon. i’ve had full frame cameras I really wasn’t that impressed.
