I wish cooking shows were still this calm and relaxed. I feel like people have short attention spans and want everything in 3 minutes or less. Gorgeous soup!
I agree with you. So many things today are done in a hurry with negative attitude... Back in these days people cherished their time and talents and enjoyed sharing with us and helping us learn more... Way to much anxiety in this world now.
those kind of 3 minute videos are super important when it's your turn to make dinner though. i can't even count the number of times i used tasty videos to make something to eat.
Martha Stewart my mother is now long gone and a Polish Jew who almost perished in the Holocaust but managed to make it to North America and my sister and I are probably unworthy recipients of many of her and our Dad's great ideas. But they are ever present in our minds and hearts and some fundamental recipes remain, indelibly. I thank you and your mother for this collaborative presentation. As a foodie I mess about with food as the characters of The Wind in the Willows Messed about in Boats .. a meditative exercise, but this was utterly lovely. Many thanks!
My parents came to the United States from Russia in 1911. They were Germans from Russia. My mother made a vegetable soup she called Borsht but it didn’t look anything like yours though she did add beets, too. I loved her soup and we had it often.
I haven't attempted borscht soup for decades, only eating beets at a buffet when dining out. My husband came home with a good deal on beets and said to do something with it. I quickly went on youtube how to, and of course, selected Martha Stewart. I surprised myself making it, now want to do it again, since I missed some things like adding flour for thickener and had only parsley (no dill weed). I ladled beet broth in with sour cream and it was so smooth. Amazed that the lemon juice stops the red bleeding. Thank you for sharing this special recipe, going to watch it a few times.
Oh, my goodness, just found this recipe (vegan), made it today, had two big bowls and eyeing a third. Oh, and I made the vegetable stock. Both were so easy. I never baked my beets, and that retains the colour and nutrients as opposed to boiling. My tummy is happy! Thanks.
I know this soup my friends made this for me, they are Central Europeans. I love how each and every country has their own twist on this soup. Same goes for piorogue pastries❤
hi dear how are you doing how's the weather conditions over there hope you keep safe I must tell I find your profile intriguing and charming you look so beautiful your beauty would save the world.
I second that opinion- What ever happened to calm cooking shows?- love 💕 seeing big Martha and MS- my Russian mom also made “pink soup”- delish!!! Thanks mom ❤️
This recipe may not be traditional (it's certainly nothing like my grandmother's recipe), but I made it tonight, and it was incredibly good ! I'll definitely be making it again.
hi dear how are you doing how's the weather conditions over there hope you keep safe I must tell I find your profile intriguing and charming you look so beautiful your beauty would save the world.
I like watching Martha and her mother. Beets are high in immune-boosting vitamin C, fiber, and minerals like potassium (essential for healthy nerve and muscle function) and manganese (which is good for your bones, liver, kidneys, and pancreas). Not to mention these ruby red roots of tasty goodness are a unique source of betaine, a nutrient that helps protects cells, proteins, and enzymes from environmental stress. It’s also known to help fight inflammation, protect internal organs, improve vascular risk factors, enhance performance, and likely help prevent numerous chronic diseases. Beetroot soup is very healthy. We eat once a week. In the summer we add beet leaves to the soup. Instead of lemon, you can use vinegar. We usually eat with whole potatoes in the soup or mashed potato on a separate plate. Clean red borscht (Barszcz czysty czerwony) is served for Christmas Eve. We make refreshing sour beet kvass from raw red beets with salted water, sourdough rye bread, garlic, bay leaf and allspice. It may take three to five days to sour.
🌹 l loved watching BIG Martha in action!! She was the Cats Meow 🎯 Loved her sweet personality & her 'stick to the recipe' attitude 🎉 Miss you Big Martha & thank you for giving us your wonderful daughter ❤
This recipe reminds me of Babcia, I miss her dearly and was just thinking about all the foods that we ate during lent. Thanks Martha for reminding me and your mother also in heaven with my will probably making all these for next week. I look forward to trying your recipes of golumpki, pierogi etç because I lost all of babcias recipes somewhere between the 1st & 9th floods. Thank you. Sincerely, Jaimie. JAMS. 1 T
Thank you both for this cooking 'how to'; I look forward to trying this. I think I 'might' add some potatoes to taste, after I try it the original way you've shown. Martha, you're the best!! Cheers!
If Martha’s mom is a good Eastern European woman, then you all know she didn’t share her own recipe exactly like she makes it ;p Don’t get so bent out of shape! It looks delicious.
hi dear how are you doing how's the weather conditions over there hope you keep safe I must tell I find your profile intriguing and charming you look so beautiful your beauty would save the world.
Oh, Martha, you are one of those people who somehow exudes good vibes. The borscht looks like something to try. What about meat, though? Which: beef, pork, chicken?
I made this soup today. Fabulous .. just like my Mothers. Used the four fresh beets, but next time, I will also add one or two cans of string beets that my Mother did, so there’s more to chew. Otherwise, it was delicious. The lemon is a must.
Martha's mother could have had her own cooking show to LOL I had some unique food experiences in my childhood my mother used to clean for this elderly couple and he was polish and she was Czechoslovakia they became like second grandparents to me because they didn't have any grandchildren and they had wanted grandchildren bad so they taught me a lot of things trust me meal time was always good
Mom knows best. Of course her daughter can afford the mushrooms but that wise of her mother to warn the audience in case noone wants to spend money for pricey mushrooms. Way to go mom!
love these classic videos also; so many different recipes but this is great. I have a friend whose childhood memories include this soup and it's almost exactly like this! My Dad was Serbian and I have an entire translated cookbook of extraordinary meals.
well, this is really delicious beetroot soup(we do it too and call it Polish beets soup/ usually serve it cold, in the Summer) , but it's not a borscht =)
As a Romanian, I don't get this slavic recipe. Borsch is a soup in which you put the key ingredient: the borsch itself - which is a liquid from fermenting wheat bran + corn flower + black bread +etc + the particular fermenting bacteria (which is the key). This liquid is sour like lemon juice, and is added to make the soup sour. Personally i love drinking it by itself, more than adding it into a soup. But this recipe doesn't say anything about adding this sour fermented liquid.. this is just a soup, not a borscht.. (its possible that this is completely different in Slavic countries versus Romania or Balkan/Turkish influenced countries)
I wish cooking shows were still this calm and relaxed. I feel like people have short attention spans and want everything in 3 minutes or less. Gorgeous soup!
What's For Din'? I totally agree!
I agree with you. So many things today are done in a hurry with negative attitude... Back in these days people cherished their time and talents and enjoyed sharing with us and helping us learn more... Way to much anxiety in this world now.
Yes, that or some kind of realty TV food show!
You don't like being screamed at by Rachael Ray? Gee, I thought I was the only one.....
those kind of 3 minute videos are super important when it's your turn to make dinner though.
i can't even count the number of times i used tasty videos to make something to eat.
I love Martha’s frugal mom.
I came here just to say this. So precious
Love your mother ....love the quietness of your cooking show .....no yelling ...screaming or over the top antics ...Thanks

Beautifully written! Thank you and greetings from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Martha's mother seems like a very gracious and lovely lady.
I can’t believe Martha is over 70 this year and her mother left this world long ago at 93... time flies
Keep these old videos coming! Especially with momma Martha! ❤️
My parents came to the United States from Russia in 1911. They were Germans from Russia. My mother made a vegetable soup she called Borsht but it didn’t look anything like yours though she did add beets, too. I loved her soup and we had it often.
They had full episodes on Hulu. Someone should upload them to UA-cam.
I love watching Martha and her mother.
Ditto!
This is very good that Martha is sharing her culinary heritage by inviting her mother. Martha’s show adds so much cultural depth to it.
Thanks! I love to watch Martha and her lovely Mom cook! I miss the old days! They are both so confident.
Rip!
@@lalaycoco9467 Yes! Thank goodness we still have the videos. I bet Martha really misses her Mom.

Smacznego! I just made some myself! It was fun watching and listening to you both chat it up in Polish!
Had to hear my mom and her mother go on for hrs in polish. And they assumed I did not understand. 😇🙄😁

The videos with your mother are beautiful. I have watched them over and over.
Beet kvass that has been fermented until sour is a great borscht starter as well.
I know this soup my friends made this for me, they are Central Europeans. I love how each and every country has their own twist on this soup. Same goes for piorogue pastries❤
Very enjoyable and informative. So civilized compared to today.
I LOVE watching your mother! I miss her......💕💕💕
What happened to her?
How long is this video anyways?
Awww how sweet mother and daughter time is always so special!

My mother would have got along just fine with Martha's mom. I enjoy seeing mom as much as the recipe!

What a darling video! Borscht is one of my favorite recipes. I will try your recipe!
Her mom is so adorable.
Actually the recipe for BARSZCZ is a bit different in every family. Greetings from Poland!
exactly, quite very different in Romania :) Greetings!
Can you share your recipe here ? 🎀
No właśnie, kompletnie inaczej!
That goes for any food and dish
Ukrainians do it differently also. Even within Ukraine, every cook has their own recipe

Best baking retains nutrients
I Love you Martha!!!
What year was this? I remember early 2000 this song with the guitar and the humming voice was so relaxing. Lol.
I’m so weird I love Borscht but I don’t care for beets. They were
always on my family’s Holiday Table. 😳🙄😂
I did not expect the best part of this video to be Martha's insanely cute mom!!!
Matha is 83 now. I loved the movie about her.
Mom knows best. Of course her daughter can afford the mushrooms but that wise of her mother to warn the audience in case noone wants to spend money for pricey mushrooms. Way to go mom!

I always roast a beet for my Passover plate. I use it instead of a lamb shank.
Smacznego! Wesolego Alleluja, Ladies and Gentlemen!
