How I Load 150 Pasture Raised Chickens by Myself

  • I have found it is easier to load pasture raised chickens early in the morning while it is still dark out as the chickens are less apt to move very much. However, lights must be kept to a minimum. It is best to simply use a headlamp while you are loading them. While I generally do it myself, it is definitely easier with two people so someone can handle the boxes.
Speaking of boxes...my "poultry crates" are 27 gallon heavy duty totes you can find at Wal-Mart, Lowes, Sam's Club, etc. They generally cost between $9 - $11 as compared to $45 or so for a real poultry crate. Make sure you drill enough holes for air flow so the chickens can breathe and stay cool. I can get between 5 - 7 birds in each crate depending on the size.

Thank you! I am working on the creative side of my brain 😃, but I spent most of my career in finance. I am a bit of a data nerd.

That has obviously proven to be a good use of your brain. Keep it up. Farm enterprises need and abundance of data nerds!@@coveychasefarm

Well done! What is the cost of having chickens parted out? If you dont mind. No chicken processors near me except the big guys. Shenandoah Valley

Thank you! Yes, finding a processor is difficult and the big chicken houses won’t work with local farmers. I am very blessed that I have a Kentucky Licensed processor in my county. $4.75 for a parted bird and $3.50 for a whole bird. I do a lot of birds so not sure if a little more for lower quantities.
