"Designed to be sold, not to be used." That captures our feelings as the buyers perfectly. Thank you!
Welcome to the goal of late stage capitalism 🙃. Also hampers the right to repair movement.
It’s not the best way of putting it because the machines will still work just fine, so saying they’re not made to be used is very misleading, but I guess saying “not optimized around use” isn’t quite as succinct. The reality is that even if you get a machine that is more spec’ed out than you need even to the point that you end up sacrificing some performance, most people aren’t going to notice, so the worst thing that happens is they spend more money than they had to. Caveat emptor.
@@mutedmutiny9542 I mean alot of modern laptops aren't more unusable than their older counterparts.
Sure you had easily replaceable batteries and what not back then.
But the price to performance is absolutely garbage compared to today's machines.
Companies used to try their best coz even my computers and other devices used to last for at least 5 years.
But recent changes from many companies have made devices so disposable that my SO has replaced her devices (phones, laptops and smart-bands/watches) more than I care to keep track.
@@loowick4074true, who is going to use a 5 year old laptop now, after using a laptop for such a long time, just upgrade to a new one. Because the main components are too old
We need to get this channel a lot more popular, folks. Josh said nothing but the truth here. We need the companies to notice the problems mentioned in the video.
Thanks heaps for that! Yes would be nice
I 100% agree with you.
Sadly, as the saying goes, no snowflake can ever be innocent of the final avalanche. We're all part of the problem. Yes, even the non-consumers.
True
Seriously agree. He is worth some bitcoin
Honestly after 6 years in DIY PC building, shopping for a laptop this past week was super stressful. The industry wide tactics are really, at their worst, consumer rights abuses. Especially pre-installed virus stuff and the confusion around performance expectations.
Exactly this, wish I could build a Laptop in the same way I built my PC 😂
Buying a new laptop (or computer in general) used to be so much simpler because _newer_ almost automatically meant _better._ 8 years ago, I bought a new ASUS with 8 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, and 1920x1080 max res for a base cost of only $650. 7 years before that, I paid slightly _more_ for a Dell Vostro with probably half the RAM, a _fraction_ of the storage, and _lower_ res. That's EXACTLY the way technology is supposed to progress - devices become both better AND more affordable as the technology improves and becomes more widespread.
I recently set about searching for a new laptop (my 8-year-old ASUS still functions adequately, but its exterior is badly cracked), and I was baffled and infuriated by what I saw. Like this video says, everything seems so needlessly confusing and convoluted now as compared to just a few years ago. Now laptops are designed for specific purposes (i.e.: business, school, gaming) and are overly focused on certain features while being grossly deficient in others. But what infuriates me most of all is that many laptops in or near the price range of my current one actually have _inferior_ specs (i.e.: less storage space or lower res). That's absolutely INEXCUSABLE - something that could be purchased for $650 8 years ago should be STANDARD on any laptop in that price range nowadays. It's as if the manufacturers are deliberately and needlessly undercutting the specs on low/mid-price laptops to dissuade you from buying them and pressure you into buying a much more expensive one with a bunch of bloated specs that you don't actually need.
There's literally $650 gaming laptops packing a 6 core CPU and a rtx 3050. And $750 ones pack an 8 core CPU and a 6gb rtx 4050. With $850 ones having a 4060.
And where exactly would gaming laptops lag? Even ryzen models get decent battery life and performance is quite a bit better on them nowadays.

On the repair front I've gone Framework with my laptop. Their announcement yesterday for a 16in laptop with a modular discrete graphics card that can be upgraded/repaired is a game changer for me.
I love what framework is doing and I hope they continue and have a lot of success in the market. Obviously we can’t just mine the earth forever to keep making products that we just throw out, so a company like that is really needed and I applaud their efforts and forward thinking.
It's a shame they aren't available in my country. I need one of em :')
@@-Retired- you can import it. As long as your taxes arent that high. Im from south america and i only pay 10% extra to the final cost to bring it here. I buy from the US, or anywhere in the world really.
Another plus one for framework!
I really want that 16 inch framework it will be hard to get in europe tho 😥
I agree with most of your points for the average 90% of consumers, but there are those who are tech enthusiasts and hardcore gamers who would like to know how the new CPUs and GPUs perform before purchase. One thing we would like to see for consumers are more reviews for budget laptops under $1000 for the demographic you just mentioned. Another thing that's been overdone is reviews for Macbooks. I've seen some channels review the same Macbook over and over again just because it's a popular brand and the reviewer knows it will rack up views. Example: Macbook Pro unboxing, Macbook Pro initial thoughts, Macbook Pro review, Macbook Pro 1 month later review, Macbook Pro 6 months later review, Macbook M1 Pro in 2023. 😂
Maybe the MacBook reviews are "overdone" because they're actually good laptops? Try one before you knock it.
@@ArthropodSpidey I ain't knocking it. I own 2 Macbook Pros. But as I said, everyone already knows it's a good overall laptop, there's really no need to saturate UA-cam with that many reviews.

I really love that you mentioned the god awful marketing for these "antivirus" or "protection" software that come pre-installed on most Windows laptop. Especially if you're older and don't know that much about this space, it can be so frustrating and scary for people to think they need to spend money on something Windows already handles natively.
I like how you speak your mind and tackle on issues so few others look at, or even acknowledge. I'll be keeping a closer look on your channel, Josh, thanks for all you do
I'm one of those that have been paralyzed with the indecision of a new laptop, actually for about 4 years now. The hours of research-- the tech videos, the articles I've read, even visiting stores to look and touch them, as well as the specs I've research... And I'm still incisive. Because of the price I just don't want to f* it up. I don't want to buy something and then within a few weeks or months a more Superior version came out and I got screwed for the money that I purchased the laptop. I don't want it to be a very expensive mistake that I make.
I'm getting a m1 max 16in and calling it a day ngl

Upgradebility is getting limited in a growing number of models, especially thin and light, as is soldered ram in Zenbook. It would make minimum to no difference if Asus left at least one slot upgradable. As of now you are stuck with whichever you chose at the beginning
This kind of think through, editorial videos, is really good and worth continuing. Kudos.
I really feel this. I'm looking into buying a new laptop to go back to school, and this has been such a headache.
Looking into pre-built units is frustrating because sometimes they do not provide the features I need (good screen, good keyboard, good battery life) while they flaunt extravagant features that make me distracted (CPU power, VGA power...). I embarrassingly admit that I nearly went for another gaming laptop even though I already have one that works perfectly fine, but I just "want something a little bit better".
For now the closest thing that will offer me nearly all the features I need are custom-built Thinkpads, and Macbook Pro. The Mac is prohibitively expensive though.
Most people will not spend months like I do waiting for the best laptop at the ideal price, like tracking discounts from Lenovo, HP, Dell, MS and Asus. For these people, it's best to grab a MacBook or MacBook Air and move on with their lives.
However, for those who are willing to do extensive shopping and probably waste hours or days or their lives, there are still some deals to be had. But this sucks as they have to watch many videos, read reviews, and still have to deal with disappointment now and then.
Excellent video - all very good points! We need more of this from Tech Tubers. Well done Josh! 👍🏽
I would add 3 HUGE issues: 1. Laptops aren't displayed in most brick and mortar high streets and shopping malls. Apart from a few multiples like Best Buy in the US and Curry's in the UK it's hard to find the laptops that you're interested in buying and give them a quick once over before you buy. Buying online can be very hit and miss for such an expensive purchase.
2. The ownership experience is even worse than the buying experience. Even if you pay extra for premium support (from the manufacturer or retailer) you hardly ever get it. It's still hours on the phone, dealing with unhelpful call centres and it's very difficult to get issues fixed quickly.
3. Laptop build quality is still extremely patchy (Dell especially) and there's simply no excuse in this day and age for that. It shouldn't be a lottery to get a decent trackpad, keyboard, hinges, screen without dead pixels etc etc. And don't get me started on software bugs. It's inexcusable to have to keep downloading driver fixes for basic stuff like audio or printer drivers or the wifi card. That stuff should work straight out of the box and faultlessly for many years. Most owners are forever fixing bugs and issues on their laptops. No other consumer products are so routinely troublesome.
Apple is the shining exception to much (not all) of the above. In fact, one of the main reasons I've switched to Apple phones, laptops and tablets etc is because they are much more reliable and if I need some support, I can book into the Genius Bar at a convenient Apple Store. I'd rather pay the Apple tax and get something for it than the £300 I paid for a 5 year premium on site warranty only to be told by Dell that 'it doesn't cover hardware'. 🤬
All good points
Great points! I also think that there's a certain degree of the endowment effect in some consumer purchases. If you're not financially able or not motivated to find something better, then you might just end up sticking with your first choice. Which could be either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your perspective.
Apple doesn't support right to repair and tries to keep users in a walled garden. For me, those are enough of a reason (including the fact I hate macOS) for me to not buy Macs.
Kudos for the mention of Framework. Amazingly well thought out product. I'm looking forward to their 16" modular gaming laptop going on sale later this year. If they manage to pull off everything promised, it will be my next laptop. Cheers!
I think it is totally useless to offer an analysis, to make (often negative) recommendations on the new 15-inch Macbook Air M2 if, like this presenter, you admit you have not yet used it yourself !
Excellent points. I especially feel like "building laptops for SALE, not for USE" is true - unfortunately, that is the case with most products in our consumerist and hyper-capitalism society. Thanks to reviewers like you, who remain objective and critical with regards to how the product actually fulfills its purpose, we can make better-informed buying decisions, and through them hopefully affect the product strategies at least very little.
People have still too much money. That's the problem. Once they start saving money, manufacturers will hire a better designers, instead of ekm...."content creators".
Josh, great video. You nailed it when you talked about the whole laptop EXPERIENCE, not just numbers on a spec sheet.
I wanted to get away from macOS and purchase a Windows laptop and boy, did I have my work cut out for me. I don’t have much issue digging through spec sheets because I know what I’m looking for (I’m not the average user), but what I did have issues with was the things that reviewers gloss over. I returned about five laptops due to coil whine or fan noise. Quick aside regarding fan noise: it’s not always the presence of fan noise that bothers me, it’s the high pitched turbine-like whine that most laptops make. It drives me up a wall and I can’t stand it. Perhaps you can start sharing fan noise sound samples in your reviews so we can hear this. Some of Apple’s laptops prior to the MBP redesign suffered from this too so the issue isn’t uniquely a Windows laptop problem.
I completely lucked out because I actually ended up on a cheaper laptop than any one I tried before - the Asus Zenbook 14. My only qualms are the 8GB of soldered memory and the short battery life (Intel CPU). In all other regards it still has me smiling ear to ear when I know that I got it for ~$540 open box (retails for $750 at Best Buy). I’m also delighted to be back on Windows.
I’m just waiting for an updated 2023 SKU of this laptop (announced at CES) with a 7000 series Ryzen processor and 16GB of RAM. When it lands on shelves, I’ll likely have myself my next 5-year plus laptop. Again, great video.
I bought an expensive MSI gaming laptop in 2010 due to their PR about their special case making it easier to upgrade. As it turns out, it was a pretty busy time period for me and I barely used laptop through university years etc.
However, I did like the laptop and in 2017 I decided to buy another MSI gaming laptop with the special cases making it easier to upgrade. This time, the laptop broke in about half a year and had to be sent to official MSI repair place. They had to replace the motherboard, which consisted of one by one soldering every piece of my laptop onto a new motherboard. When this laptop had more problems in 2022, the repair guy asked wtf happened to the inside of my laptop with all the shoddy soldering work.
But here's the real kicker, while this guy was fixing my laptop, I asked if he could throw in a new CPU or GPU since he's in there anyway. He said no, you cannot upgrade those on any laptop. So the entire PR about easy to open and navigate case for easy upgrading was a sham since the only upgradable thing is basically RAM.
I just discovered this channel and i havent seen another tech youtuber that explains so well. amazing, keep up the good work
Thanks Josh---this is the best ad for Chromebooks I've ever seen. Regarding your plan for shorter videos, so long as your mom is ok with it I'm good. ;) Appreciate you and the channel!
"Designed to be sold, not to be used." As soon as you ask for 32GB, the price increases by $1000. Anyone know why? The SDRAM DDR4 and DDR5 chips from manufacturers cost two orders of magnitude less than that markup.
Love your take on the industry. Keep up the good work
You are absolutely thoughtful and really are here to help us, Thank You! Please keep doing what you are doing....because I just subscribed!!!!!!
Thank you for your efforts and yeah, I totally agreed on the pain points.
I've been watching some of your review videos and finally got around to watching this one. Really great video that really captures the dilemma that so many of us laptop buyers are facing now. I'm currently using a Chromebook with a really great display, but at the time that I purchased it, about 3 years ago, I completely overlooked RAM and went with a 4GB model because I thought it'd be fine since I'm mostly just browsing the web... well I was wrong. While it still works fine most of the time I'm now seeing it choke up on a semi-regular basis. I've been looking to buy a new laptop and while I think I should be fine with 8GB, but now I'm worried about being stuck with a laptop that will slowdown sooner rather than later. The number of non-upgradable laptops these days is just ridiculous.
so glad company like framework exists, hope they continue making laptops, because it just seems like a perfect laptop to me, being able to upgrade and repair everything yourself, im planning on buying one and installing linux on it to not deal with windows spyware
Hi Josh, greetings from Italy. I love this channel as I'm looking for a laptop but I don't know what to look. I love the fact that your english is so easy to understand that I'm not having problems even if I'm not native speaker. I hope this channel will get bigger and bigger.
love your content, got notified from the bell, speaking some truths Josh!
Thanks for this video! I'll be careful on my next laptop upgrade. It's funny that you mentioned all the marketing pop-ups. I fought against my current laptop when I first purchased it. Anyway, I finally turned everything off can deleted whatever I could, so now I don't have any marketing pop-ups anymore. I don't think I have any anti-virus on my laptop and it's been about 4 years now. Time for an upgrade and I can't wait for those marketing pop-ups! Thanks again!🙏😊
I bought a used Dell Latitude with a 1st gen i3 processor for like £20 (minus AC adapter) and that would still do for most casual users today. With an SSD it's no slower than laptops I've got with much more powerful CPUs. I've done tech support for the public through libraries and it made me sick when old dears would come in with £1500 MacBooks that they'd been sold when all they do is write the odd letter, send and receive e-mails, and do some web browsing. I didn't have the heart to tell them that they could do the same thing on a £30 used laptop.
I have even better observation - current integrated GPUs behave worse that those from past few years. Dynamic power throttling ? Probably yes, because old GPUs were always "fast", and current ones use power on demand, so there is a slight time gap before switching more power to GPU. At the cost of CPU of course. I know, a good idea, but for me - silly.
Harsh truth: For most people, you're fine with just a Macbook (air, pro, whatever). You will have very few problems, and it will last you nearly a decade. For gamers, you're better off buying a desktop - there are simply no reliable Windows laptops.
This right here. Mac makes good laptops, windows is good for desktops, that is until Win 10 expires, then Linux gaming all the way

Definitely agree. For the longest part of the computing era, the CPU was the bottleneck. Now we've gotten to a point where most processors can handle 90% of the tasks that most people do. Even gamers prioritize the GPU over the CPU. For that reason, I've recently been looking at the other features that get ignored. Good news is if you see this too, you're ahead of the curve.
I just want a laptop for programming and doing my school work when it comes to researching and using excel. What should I get for best value for money right now?
What an amazing video! Loved it! Can you make a similar rant for mid range gaming laptops please.
8:40 Can you provide more information about it? (NVIDIA) I'm not sure I get it.
I really love MacBooks, but I am a windows gamer. I bought the MacBook 14 M2 and completely loved it but I returned it because I am worried that I may not be able to play a game due to compatibility issues. I currently have the new Samsung galaxy book ultra 3 which is the “closest apple laptop” but it gets too hot and loud when I use it, I just wish there was a MacBook quality laptop for windows. I can’t stand fan noise and heat… anyways, any suggestions would be great for what I am seeking, does such a thing exist? I currently play world of Warcraft which is Mac compatible, but the new Diablo is not, just makes me worried to commit to apple having those kinds of issues.
M1 MacBook Pro 14 base model or m2 MacBook Pro base model which one is the best to get
I fully agree with your points here. So many design choices are done for marketing, not for actual use.
One of the laptops I actually wanted for the internals (which are rare here) was a really bad package deal. The chassis was bad, the cooling was underbuilt and the screen was flimsy.
I went for a similarly specced device (still relatively low end) in a thicker chassis designed for higher end parts.
The quality you get is much better, but it scares me that they'd try to cram double the hardware in the chassis that barely can handle lower midrange parts.
I’m happy we have you here. Thanks for your efforts.
1:27 it's a bit of a disaster im even filming on my travel camera proceeds to show a really nice camera that's a flex bro
Great video, I'm very happy with the last laptop I bought, awesome CPU, entry level dedicated GPU, and beutiful screen - exactly suited for my needs. Also bought without preinstalled OS. But I am very knowledgable on tech, especially PC. My sister has been searching for a new laptop a long time now and even with me trying to help, at these prices and not really knowing her exact demands yet just at the beginning of her studies, there hasn't been a decision yet.
One small thing - and well just my opinion - AMDs new naming scheme for their mobile SoCs is actually pretty awesome. They're all new SKUs with certain new 7th gen features, and what each of them has is directly clear from the name. You need to know the meaning of the numbers though, and even more importantly, what it is that's being referred, but at least it makes helping others a lot easier.
well said . Battery life in laptops is a very crucial spec that most manufacturers overlook or do not invest in it's improvement.
In your thoughts, do you think a hp elitebook g6 still a good buy in 2023? Like many, I'm a little undecided
I have the same opinion about buying laptops nowadays and we didn't even touch the cutting corners and new design issues that some laptops like the ideapad 5 that I have that shows hinge issues and not just to me, but many other users too!
I have a desire of trying the Tuxedo pulse 15, I've seen that those laptops really get great upgradability and that design seems no never throttle and even run quieter since they asked for special cooling configuration exclusive to that model and that brand. Could you please review that one?
Yes, more Tuxedo reviews, please!
Most laptops are fine as long as you clean install the OS to get rid of all the junk and optimize it to minimize unnecessary background tasks. Also keep inside components clean to improve the cooling.
What do you think about the framework laptop. Is this worth trying
What's your opinion on Surface Pro 9 Josh? I am considering purchasing that since the form factor really fits my workflow. But many reviews got me worried, exactly what you have said in this video: overheating and battery inefficiency.
Really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks
I agree with this and I look fwd to more like this.
I agree with you! I went through hell trying to get a good laptop as a software developer (crappy keyboards, screens, you name it). Finally settled on the Triton 300 SE 14" on sale for 999.
As a person who uses a laptop as mostly a desktop replacement at home and occasionally on holidays in hotel rooms with curtains - low screen brightness and weak speakers are non-issues for me. I can also forgive a crappy track pad as I bring my mouse along. But I do want a laptop with good cooling and relatively low fan noise - probably the only thing I can't test in a store.
I wish I could use my M1 MacBook air for work. I have a Dell latitude 7420 for work and it engages turbo boost with UA-cam and two office apps running on usb-c, i.e fan noise instantly on play. So I've resorted to turning off turbo boost manually - how 😢
Hello! I'm trying to decide which laptop to buy this year. First, I want a 17 inch HP model with PLENTY of connector ports. I'll be using it mostly to write my fictional stories and personal essays. It doesn't really have to be super-portable since I'll keep it inside. I feel OVERWHELMED with terms like RAM and DISK SIZE. Could you give me a RECOMMENDATION-----PLEASE!!
Highly highly recommend to buy the Framework laptop! They have an AMD version on sale in couple of months and they have a 16 inch gaming laptop with detachable/upgradable dedicated graphics coming out later this year. It's not the best bang for the buck laptop but it sure as hell will be in 5 or 6 years.
Super useful. Thanks a lot. Well, I am using a MacBook Pro M1 Max 16 on daily basis but I would like to have a personal one. I totally agree with you regarding the 14 but I prefer a Windows laptop and so I have a question for you. What windows laptop should I consider (13/14) for content creation? There is Dell XPS 13Plus but I would like to consider other alternatives. Thanks
You might find the upcoming Asus Zephyrus g14 appealing, especially with the miniLED screen option
Thank you Josh, I have been looking for a laptiop for the last weeks now, and I couldn't decide till I wateched this video.
Also what is your opinion about Lenovo thinkbook plus twist with the new color e-ink display? What is its battery life? Wouldn't it be better if it was coming with an AMD CPU to minimize temperature and a larger 14inch or 15 inch display?
I definitely feel this. I got a Lenovo legion recently and in its balanced power mode the fans are loud to the point that it sounds like I'm in a server room. You can manually override the fans to be quieter, but then the performance goes down noticeably defeating the point of the process/gpu inside anyway
Which Legion laptop are you using? I'm currently considering buying a Legion Slim 7 Gen 7 (AMD), which Josh himself recently recommended. Upon further research, it appears to be a relatively quiet option. Low fan noise and heat are very high priority for me, so I'm interested in whether the laptop can stay quiet and cool in more realistic scenarios (and not synthetic benchmarks, which is what most reviewers provide).
@@Phxstick My Intel variant is dead quiet in silent mode and considering AMD processors tend to draw less power than Intel's, I'm fairly certain you'll have no issue with this model. Be sure to use it on flat surfaces to not block airflow though
@@LRZephyr Thanks for the info, I've been specifically avoiding the Intel variant (which btw is currently cheaper than the AMD one in my country) because I've seen a few users/reviewers say that it gets rather warm and loud. But if even that variant can run quietly, at least for lighter tasks like web browsing, then that's very reassuring
You can use Legion Fan Control/Legion toolkit, Im a legion 5 2021 3060 owner!
That's BS bro. I have one and you are exaggerating the hell out of the fan noise. please cut it out!!!!
All valid comments Josh and very well presenteed as usual. My perspective is to consider in the equation also the people as "complice" for what brands are pulling out. The audience, as usual people are, it is not capable of auto-regolation, this issue can be seen in any sort of thematic involved, be environment, be buying devices, be consume products. The fact that brand give specs that are useles for 90% of the buyers is because buyers wants to have those specs, either becasue it looks cooler or simply because it is the moment fashion. For most users an i7 is not even needed (or AMD R7). the point is that brands are simply giving and throwing at us what we are asking in my opinion. People that knows their needs and that reason with their mind instead of the others and buy what they really need instead of what is cool can be count in one hand.
Definitely concur with the designed to be sold sentiment.
There seems to be a gap in the market for Laptops with efficient, yet modest processors, that still offer high end specs in other desirable components and features. E.g. things like storage size, screen resolution, materials, ergonomics, refresh rates and Ram speeds.
So to get a laptop with an excellent screen or decent amount of storage, often you are forced to choose a model that also incorporates the high end, most powerful and expensive processor specs.
When all many people want to do is browse the net, use Office and watch videos and movies. What can't I get an excellent screen, decent amount of storage with a just adequate, efficient processor?
I think M1 base models, M1 Pro 14 base model or the 10 core 1TB model I have and M1 Max 16 base were so good Apple had to look at ways to up sell (hence the slower SSDs). I’m not sure bar M2 Max 16 the chassis can handle the M2 thermal range as well as M1 range. Also in U.K. lots of PC companies added 1K onto the laptop from the year before for 12th gen CPUs and Ti cards. Great as they are performance wise due to thermals no way say the X17R2 was worth 1K more than the X17R1 in my view.
Have the G14 now, really happy with the laptop and how light it is. Really good price for $1,100 when I bought it new on Best Buy

I bought one too and I'm going to return this one with 6800s. Too hot when just browsing/streaming sports and battery life is mediocre at best. Gaming seems good on it but I also need to be plugged in with this massive 240 watt charger. So much for portability.
Indeed. Its my last year of college and after 7yrs my Alienware died during the winter break, and now I have to buy a new laptop. Thanks to your videos I’m set to buy the MBA M2 but yes it was a tough decision with all the specs you could add, and if you add those specs then there is a better laptop for a few extra hundred bucks and it goes on and on 🙃😂
But Josh, your video of seven months ago, comparing to versions of the Dell XPS Plus model 9320, clearly demonstrated the superiority of the Core i7 to the Core i5. So maybe that aspect of the purchase decision might not be completely attributed to marketing. All in all, another superb video!
I think that his point here is not about relative superiority; it's about the actual added value to the user. It's the same for many products; they just have to keep selling. I bought the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones because they were supposed to be superior to the 40% cheaper XM4. In practice, I use them for like 15 to 30 minutes per day during video conferences, and they are uncomfortable. As often, I wanted peace of mind by going the most expensive route, but I believe a cheaper, more comfortable option would have been a better choice for my use case.
Absolutely, I'm considering purchasing the Asus 15Pro OLED for my professional stock media work, and while it excels in several areas, there's one aspect that leaves me wanting more. It features just one USB 3rd gen port but offers two 2nd gen ports. It's marketed as a creator's laptop, but the lack of USB Type-C display support and a DisplayPort is a bit disappointing. Additionally, having only a HDMI 1.4 port when HDMI 2.1 would have been more future-proof is a notable drawback.
so Asus ZenBook 14X with a Intel Core i9-13900H is not good and a i7-13700h would be the better buy?
For a home laptop I don't require much computing power but I want a good display and sound. So I ended up with a Microsoft Surface Go 3 tablet. Built well, and no bloatware. I could (and have in the past) paid the same $$ for more computer in a cheaper chassis but that's not as good a long term experience. Focus on value, not price, they are not the same.
great video - ever thought of doing a daily livestream?
I'd love to Steve, perhaps a weekly rather than daily?
Do you recommend the MacBook Air m2 with 512 for computer science? Or any other Mac around that price point
For me no because no fans
Great video...
Straight to the point and extremely informative...
Main reasons I haven't bought a New laptop...
I really like your channel, Josh. Right on the spot with this video. Recently (3 weeks ago) I pulled the trigger on purchasing a beautiful MacBook 14". I learned so much from buying my M1 laptop. I went for the 16" at that time, and bought it brand new in the Apple Store. What a mistake to make. I found out, pretty early, that I needed more memory. But, I was locked in and had not done my research, rather was guided by the fact that I sold my XPS17 and "needed" another good laptop. About 4 weeks ago, a friend came by and was looking at my laptop. If I was willing to sell it to him.... I have a soft spot, but I got plenty of good money for it and our Canadian dollar is about the same value as your Aussie dollerette. I took my time, I still have a brand-new Windows laptop that I used to put everything into a spreadsheet and decided what it must have, what I considered a nice to have and another don't care. It had to be an Apple device, but did it need to be a laptop, or would a decked out Mini or Mac Studio be sufficient? It needed 32Gb of memory and I wanted to get going with developing my software skills as a hobby and working on some concepts. Of course, the 15" came out just around that time and I had to consider it. Eventually I landed on a refurbished 14" M2 MacBook Pro max with 1Tb drive - because it was available and was ticking off all the boxes. I am very pleased with it! Have been able to do my first projects on it and learn new ways. Now I am happy I took my time. And I still have my Lenovo T14 which is a lovely laptop as well.
Glad you are enjoying the content! What kind of development are you doing?
Josh, I notice ur favorite Windows laptop is Asus. Is there any other recommended brands/model that is almost as reliable as Apple with 16:10 display?
This is the most genuine and honest video ever made on YT. I'm worried that these OEMs will come after you for this video. We'll support you with whatever means necessary. Take care Josh.
They don't care enough to go after anyone, even if the truth is out there (and this video is straight up TRUTH), there are plenty of ignorant shoppers that will never stumble across this; not going to hurt their bottom line. It's different when someone like GamersNexus speaks out about something like NewEgg because there's a significant overlap between people who watch that channel and DIY builders that would shop at NE. But the majority of the laptop market? They just buy whatever the BestBuy employee suggests or someone on SlickDeals assures them it's a great deal.
Hey josh, I really like your content. I was wondering why you don’t review laptops like the xps 15 & 17 ?
I absolutely do. I have reviewed these in the past. I even recommended the 2022 XPS 17 in my best of 2022 laptop video
In my country the biggest retailer doesn't even provide details about the battery (battery life and capacity).
Hi Josh, I am in the market for a new laptop. But my friend is saying I shouldn't go for the top end of the stack i.e. the mobile 4090 but instead look at 4080 series. I will check it out. The Model I am looking at is the Asus Zephyrus M16 which I am waiting on Jarrod'sTech to review because he is my local laptop reviewer being in the same country as him. But I love your videos.
I agree with you Josh: more videos for 2023!!
I hope I don’t have to buy another laptop any time soon. Other than Framework, I don’t think I’d even look anywhere else. I have an M1 Air (which I hate), and I think despite all the good that they have done there, the horrible lack of upgrades and repair ability just makes it almost certain I’ll never buy another Mac.
Edit: also have a desktop PC (very old now).
Thanks for video, great work
I'm a ThinkPad fanboy and I really appreciate older models for their modular construction and the way they can be upgraded. It makes me sad when I see Z13 where there is virtually no any upgrade option... I understand that making laptops thinner requires some compromises, but that's sad nonetheless.
Finally convinced my boss to get me a Lenovo Thinkpad over Dell. I missed the feeling.

Can you review the Dell Precision 5470? It looks like a pretty strong laptop consider its size.
still no avail date for the amd 7040 laptops ?
On the MSI with the Norton situation, try setting the display scaling to 100%, restart and try again.
Agreed - on all points. When I see a laptop cooled well enough to deliver full performance from its GPU, it's a sheer delight. And I'd much rather go for a thicker laptop with a solid build than a thinner one that could be so much faster with just a little more care. Laptop offerings unfortunately could be a lot better.
bulky laptops are more like portable desktops.. If all you want to do is easily move your setup to another location and place it there it is perfect. But if you actually want portability and use it anywhere it is a nightmare
Josh! do you recommend waiting for oryon chip?
One huge problem for CGI rendering is the graphics card memory is too low for cheaper models. 4050, 4060 are enough in speed for my portable device needs. The 4050 and 4060 still need much better cooling with vapour chamber, I don't want noise. 16-24 GB graphics memory without 330W power brick. They always skip exp7 SD card reader. They make so many 16GB RAM laptops compared to 32GB ones, that 32GB versions have been out of stock ever since last Christmas.
What about Trend security Josh?. I have been with them since I had my HP. I live in Australia and I am looking to update now so there is a promotion with buying the Trend security when buying a laptop. Wondering if I am wasting my money
Patricia, I don't know what your level of knowledge of online scams is, so its hard to advise. If it is low, then they may have things that are of benefit. For example, if they offer anti-phishing while web browsing, then that may be very useful. I'd advise you take a look into how online scams occur and how something like that will help you. Then use your best judgement as to whether it is valuable to you.
@@JustJoshTech Thank you responding, I will take on your advise, Much appreciated Josh
Woooo, new video!
glad to see you ❤

Biggest issues not mentioned for me:
Once you spend $600 or more 16gb of ram should be the standard. 8gb is simply not enough for a laptop in 2023, and this includes MacBooks. I work enterprise IT and we originally purchased the base model M1 Air, which we had to swap out after a couple of months. 8gb is not sufficient for light excel work, web apps, video conferencing, and browsing.
If you’re a cheaper laptop manufacturer, stop soldering in ram as well. 8gb with the option to upgrade to 16gb down the line will do far more to improve usability than going from an i3 to i5.
Outside of surfaces and Samsung Galaxybook laptops, touch screen tech is awful. I’m convinced that the reason so many people dismiss 2 in 1s as a gimmick is because of the awful palm rejection and lag, not to mention the terrible stylus tech found on most touch screen Dells and Lenovos. I would love to use my 2 in 1 for notes, fine diagram markups, etc and ditch my iPad but I can’t because of how awful it is at being a tablet.
Finally, all mid tier and higher laptops should aim to have USB C ports capable of at least USB 4 data transfer speeds on both sides. It drastically improves the experience of docking it as well as charging. Ideally they also keep the headphone jack and USB A port, since so many cheaper but still excellent peripherals rely on this
All very good points.
My mom bought an inexpensive 17" laptop back in 2019 and it turns out to be upgradable. I swapped out the HD for an SSD and have even replaced the battery in it for her. It seems like the professional-grade laptops rather than consumer-grade laptops are the way to go but they had a large premium.
I'd hardly call that upgradable. If you want a real upgradable laptop buyba framework laptop. Fully modular no bullshit upgrade laptop.
Which one should I get between a M1 Pro 16” refurbished or the M2 Pro with student discount (it’s 650€ more expensive) ?
I would get M1 pro 16 to save the money.
Many focus on benchmarks instead of actual use as connectivity and local (sd-card) back-up storage. The keybed often times is ignored and actually marketed out of consideration due too this laptop is so slim and thin! Those are early warnings.
Rule of thumb is to buy twice the power and storage you think you need.
If manufacturer sells to the retailer, the user/buyer isn't their demography. The retailer wants a product with margin.
As for uninstalling the impossibe you need to go into the registry and get rid of the bloatware but also a file that re-installes the same bloatware after uninstalling it. Done so myself.
This is me when it comes to choosing a PC. I have used over a year to decide. I have gone through two PCs and returned both of them because of major issues. Hopefully, the next one I choose is the last.
Such good information, thanks!
I wanted to buy the Spectre X360 but looks like heating issues are quite frequent
Wish I had this info before. Wonderful info!
I remember when we bought an Acer Aspire 3 laptop last 2020, it was priced 36k pesos (around 650 dollars). It is full of bloatwares and still using HDD and 4GB of RAM. Fortunately its storage and RAM is upgradable, and I spent around 100 dollars to make it smooth.
Which 2-in-1 windows laptops do you recommend for someone who doesn’t need it for gaming or anything too powerful, but has a really good battery life and can run many tabs? Cost doesn’t matter
lg gram 14 inch 2 in 1
Thanks again for your help. Because of your channel I was able to get the laptop I wanted. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5i. It's working great
I think availability and combination of features is an issue. While I don't support soldered RAM or not enough cooling there might be cases were I can't get everything and have to compromise.
I also found it very problematic to find the right keyboard layout, for most Lenovos for example you can change the keyboard but for other brands you can't.
Sometimes choosing the slightly worse option might be better over all. Users have to realize that they can't have the cake and eat it too. If you next very high power get a desktop PC.
Amazing that you had a whole section on "manufacturer's maximizing profits" without mentioning Apple charging hundreds of dollars extra for tiny amounts of RAM and SSD.
