Thanks for gardening with me!
Because of you, I'm actually a well known gardener in my community!! You're so amazing!!
This is my first year to growing my own garden. Thanks so much for the information. I'm looking forward to pruning and getting my squash plants back to healthy looking.
GREAT Nicole!!! Keep after the plants, early morning/evening watering. (don't overlove them!) Glad to be a part of this journey with you!
In case you may or may not know...I livestream every Monday 12pm PT. You can interact with me, other gardeners and SmartPot and Monterey Lawn & Garden team for questions and the like!! (you can always catch the replay, as well) Welcome and thank you for Subscribing! Kim
Yes. I’m growing the 3 sisters in grow bag Raised bed. I been pruning so pollinators can see flowers, & air flow.
great lesson @CaliKim29 I need to prune right away my new squash on the porch is getting huge and the landlord's about to raise my rent! 😆
Yep, get to it!!! Keep that landlord off your back!! LOL. CaliKim
I found this very helpful, thank you! My yellow squash plant was growing like crazy and I wasn't sure how/when to prune it, and your video showed up just in time. I pruned it this morning and put the cut stems in my composter!
I let my squash plants get too bushy already. I’m mustering up the courage to get in the rubble of stems and start pruning 😂
I'm growing 2 Butternut squash plants this summer up a trellis on my balcony.
They just germinated a few days ago and just now getting their true leaves 🌿
Hi TicaJ - great timing, as you see the flowers and squash begin to develop, you now know what to do! Thanks for watching!

Super video! I’m trying vertical squash growing this year! Thanks, Kim!
My first time to grow vertical squash. Thank you for. Your tips.
i put in a raised bed this year and put squash- yellow, zucchini and butternut- and WOW the growth is considerably more substantial than last year when I was growing in 10 gal grow bags....I will be pruning them tomorrow to try to get control of them!!!- a great problem to have though- lots of baby squash coming up!!
Great vid on pruning squash. I thank you for showing how and where and why. I am growing my squash in bags this year and vertically on a stake. Thanks again and happy gardening.
You got it, Alvin - keep me posted on your harvests! Thanks for stopping by!

That is really helpful! Thank you 🙏☀️
Thank you for the info I was needing to understand the pruning so I can first time use a trellis
Glad it was helpful!
I really needed this. I just now have my first two baby squash. Thank you!

Not if they are winter squash, the type you store for winter.
Very informative. I wish my squash looked like that. My summer squash and zucchini are in deep pots about 2’x 8”.
Thank You. Great info. God Bless
I’ve definitely got to get mine pruned. I also would like to put some on a trellis.
Great video, Kim! I didn't know so many leaves could be trimmed off of squash! Next time I try to grow it, I'll know! Thanks!
I had savagely pruned some kinds of squash and seen great results, but not made the connection. Good to know plants can fight back by putting more food in my belly.
@@JasonOfTGA a great benefit, for sure! Thanks for stopping by, Jason!

All Zucchini are Squashes, but not all Squashes are Zucchini! Know the difference between Summer Squashes (Zucchini) and Winter Squashes (the storing type, which you would not want to trim.
Looking good
Love video Kim yes iam growing Squash In min purple Smart pots. And vowing Zucchini in min purple smart pots too love some tips Kim ty Shelly
Thanks
Thank you so much for this video. My squash plant is out of control size-wise and I was thinking about not growing it again next year due to its size.
Thank you for a great video about intensive squash growing. I have 2 4x8 fully enclosed raised beds. I was about to give up on growing squash but your video give me a strategy for managing the plants. From the video it looks like you had 3 squash plants in a 4 foot wide space. I would love to know the varieties you planted and I will try your pruning and vertical support techniques.
My squash are going crazy too. Probably about time to prune them. They need to be fed too.
Well dang....I went out yesterday to water the garden and one of my squash plants was just completely wilted like that. I thought it was dead so I pulled it out and replaced it with another one I had started. Guess I should have waited lol.
I’m attempting to grow squash vertically this year.
Thank you for your tips!
You are so welcome! Tell me where you are and what you are growing! CK
@@CaliKim29 Rancho Palos verdes , Ca - acorn squash and yellow squash . Sweet peppers are trying to grow too
Fantastic, keep it going - do you have afternoon cool off shore breezes? CameraGuy remembers Marineland *cough cough-old. LOL.
@@CaliKim29 yes ! And I remember Marineland lol
I pruned my squash last year. I got a really disappointing harvest, but I’m not blaming the pruning. Too many other variables. However this year I’m going to prune some plants and leave some.
Thanks, Kim! When should you start trimming? Mine are only about a foot high and are just starting to get some squash. I trim any yellow leaves already.
Interesting video Kim. I have your first book and enjoy it for gardening.
I didn't know that trimming so many branches wouldn't harm the Plant. I also plan to make a wood cage like yours :) miners
Tks for all your videos.
Glad it was helpful, Mary Elizabeth! You'll love the wood raised bed - very easy to make. All the directions are in my new book "The First Time Gardener: Raised Bed Gardening." Let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching!'

Thank You!!! I literally just ran outside during your video- I had been out back earlier and my squash were looking a little rough- I got my pruners out and trimmed them back!!! I had no idea to do that. Now they look amazing. After finishing I had to head back in watch your video one more time and be sure to thank you!
Really been enjoying the tips and learning a lot, but increasingly they raise a lot of questions for me. Do you get the fails/pests/diseases as well that don't get shown on video ? I certainly get the powdery mildew problem and will be trying those approaches. How do you keep the energy and motivation up ? (It really brightens my day seeing someone enjoying what they do and getting their hands dirty)
Such great advice. My plant looks great but my yellow squash are small and bumpy. Why?
Hi kim I'm growing to grow spaghetti squash for the first time ever what's your favorite fertilizer for squash thank 🙂🙂🙂
You can actually steam and eat the squash leaves.
Oops I cut off my questions :). My plants are young w a few leaves and leaf miners and invading. I'm using BT spray and alternating w Spinosad spray. Not helping. Suggestions please. Tks..
How soon do you prune? After it has fruit?
Thank You!
Can I prune the same way for cucumbers plants to prevent powdery mildew?
How long does it take for the squash to grow from a seedling?
What fertilizer did she use? Mine are not that big yet?
Can you use the same technique with cucumbers?
Was your squash staked or did the leave grow straight up??
I wish I watched this video yesterday before I pruned my squash. I didn’t know you have to cut them on the bottom. I hope I don’t kill them 😫
With zucchini and yellow squash, I admit defeat..the vine borers won every battle..so I just do butternut, which I love, and the bugs generally leave that alone..
Hi… can I cut the leaves and leave the stem? Does it create loss of nutrition?
Doesn't pruning the bottom leaves open space for the vine borer to lay its eggs? I'm growing zucchini both ways.
Can you compost powdery mildew squash leaves?
My squash has blossom rot. I have planted marigolds, used manure, calcium, and pruned. So frustrated
My cucumbers and zucchini were going great until the catepillars moved in. :( I tried neem oil, but it didn't seem to make a difference from one day to the next. I must have plucked at least 30 catepillars in one hour, then the very next morning, another 30, and now this afternoon - just six hours later, I found another 15+. These are containers plants, and I only have four zuccinis and two cucumber plants. Please help!
Try BT.
Bacillus thuringiensis is BT
Or 1-10 ratio of 3% peroxide/water right onto the foliage with a spray bottle. 50-50 at ground level without hitting foliage. I have used this for fungus control and root rot and have seen the bugs scatter and not come back. It burns them. It does sound like the squash bugs got you and they are now eating from the inside out. That's a problem that;s more difficult but not impossible.
Can you please offer the best solution for squash borers or bugs. I am not able to pick off eggs ... because I never get them soon enough. Is there a preventative treatment? I am growing cukes , yellow summer squash, crook neck and straight ,
As well as zucchini. I am using 20 gallon containers.
Hello CaliKim, I am having a problem that I have not had in the past. Some critter is eating the leaves of my young zucchini and green bean plants. I don't believe that it is an insect since there are no eggs, snail trails, beetles as evidence. I think it is a rodent of some type. Do you have this problem and how do you combat it? Thank you for all of your help.
Hello Eileen, hard to say what it is, small holes usually indicate a chewing or sucking insect of some kind. Here's a video will help with this issue: bit.ly/CaliKimOrganicPestControlVeggieGarden. For critters, I've used Hot Pepper Wax spray by Bonide with good success, as long as you spray it consistently. Good luck!

Great job on the video. If you want to improve your soil, mix Genesis Biochar into your soil. You will be amazed! It's like populating your soil with mansions with empty rooms that provide permanent homes for the life in the soil to flourish. Healthy soil make for healthy plants which makes for healthy people.....
What is the good size to harvest scallop squash? TIA
Good question! Scallop squash, also known as pattypan squash, are best harvested when they're about 2-3 inches in diameter.
This way they are tender and flavorful.
If they get too large, they can become tough and less tasty.
Please be sure to like the video and follow! Let me know how it goes ! CK
@@CaliKim29 thank you!
Do I prune if my plant is in ground with plenty of room to grow out
No. Only if you need to utilize that space for other plantings. Just let it go natural if you have the room. That's how nature intended it, right? Just check for squash bugs daily if you can once it gets taking off.
My fruit(squash) seems to die off....after the flower dies. What do I need to do? It's growing in a large pot
Sounds to me like it’s not being pollinated.
Hand pollenate them, that's what I do and I have tons of squash growing. I use a tiny paintbrush to grab the pollen from the male flowers and apply it to the center of the female flowers. It's super easy!
Satya likha
Also cut off male flowers
Good point, thanks, Paul! Appreciate that!
What you've shown are Zucchini....let's be clear, all Zucchini are Squash, but not all Squash are Zucchini!!!! if you're going to talk about Squash, you should explain the differences between Summer Squash and Winter Squash, with Zucchini primarily being Summer Squash. Also, there are vining and not- vining squashes. Zucchini are mostly (bush-type) and not vining (there are a few exceptions)....i.e.they are not going to vine up a trellis or vine out on the ground as per say a Winter Squash or Cucumber would/could. You market yourself well, but you're still a very inexperienced grower.
Gotcha, Jerry! 4:31 (See Calicameraguy on Instagram if you wanna know what's to see there). ;-)
