  • In this hypnotic techno production tutorial, I want to show you a technique on how to make hypnotic techno leads using Ableton Operator. It's all about creating a frequency contour rather than a melody using Ableton Operator built-in tools. It's useful regardless you make hypnotic techno or any techno music.

This is a nice technique but how can you make sure that the sounds is in key with all of these pitch automations?

You have to trust your ears here. If it sounds good is good. Techno is more about frequencies rather than notes. This way we can tap into very interesting territories when it comes to artistic expression.

It’s techno doesn’t need to be in key. Otherwise use spectrum or hum the rhythm

@@hypnotictechnoproduction This makes me feel the need to learn operator, as the sounds coming out of that synth are amazing. I hear it's quite tough to learn though.

@@stuartleighton definitely worth digging into. I have prophet 8 analog synths and I don't use it cause I can get most of my sounds from Operator now.

Thank you, this technique is cool! but how to tune your melody in the range you chose to make your track? (ex: 8A, Am), I would like to stay on this range, three notes maximum or even two, A/C/E. When I listen from 1.19" it's a random mode, a succession of notes that don't correspond to any specific scale. To tune your tracks it's going to be a problem, isn't it?? Thank you

Thanks for the comment, you raised a good point. In techno music you don't have to worry about scales that much. The experimental nature of the melodies you may come up with this method will make the tune interesting. And with the mixing is less about scales, more about the timbre of a track. If it sounds good to you, it will to others. Don't worry about it at this point, we are intentionally breaking the rules to get into some new harmonic ground.

@@hypnotictechnoproduction Can you tell me what you use as a synth on your bass track "dark war", I'm experimenting with different wavetable with wavetable that could go with this style of melody. Thanks in advance.
