I live in Texas and am foreign to snow, but I am fascinated by these bushcraft videos. It might as well be on Mars, it seems so far away. I would jump at the chance. 🇺🇸😎
Storms like that are some of my favorite times to go camping. I have the seekoutside tipi. I think that's the same one you are using. I love that thing.
Great video walker! Love the fact that you cook and show the food. A lot of channels just bypass the cooking part which I don’t understand why. I enjoy the longer videos. Can’t wait for the next one!

Also equally spread, wide TIR beam with no hotspot whatsoever, and for me the ability to circle between its three firefly modes is ingenious, I have not had more useful UI in any other headlamp (and I had dozens and dozens in past 40+ years). :-)
I never had Tiara. My reasoning is: I always have two 18650 headlamps (WizardPro and ZL H600Fc) on longer trips and either 1AA or 1AAA headlamp (with primary lithium) as last resort . And for that I need very long runtime and choice of many moonlight modes. I use either Manker E02h or E03h. They both have 21 programmable moonlight levels and the lowest is barely visible (lower than any Armytek or ZL or Thrunite and running time is virtually endless. They are bit more throwy (both have exactly same reflector and beam profile) but very nice tint with warm high CRI Nichia and E03h also comes with very nicely designed movable red/white/green diffusers. They come with horrid headband but fit nicely into Nitecore black-yellow-gray headband. They surely are not as sturdy and tough as Armyteks but they are lighter and for the US$ 19 and 29 they are in my opinion excellent. You may have a nice night trip trying them both :-) And I should add that I have no relationship with any company at all, I'm just one crazy flashoholic :-)
Thank you very much for inviting us in to camp with you! I'm curious to know how much your tent weights with all the tipi and hot tenting system and everything you've taken on a day like this.
Another great video buddy! That hot tent looks so inviting in the snow. Glad to see the sacred bacon making a couple of appearances. Adding the pepperoni was genius!
First time visiting your channel enjoyed the video and subbed thanks have not tried the lintels it looked so good and also love bacon....I do metal detecting but enjoy the camping
Ah! The sacred bacon again. Here's a meal you might want to try sometime. Pre-bake/ microwave a baking potato to about 3/4's done. Cut some sits all the way across and about 3/4's of the way through. Put a little olive oil and seasonings and wrap it foil. When read to eat, place uncooked bacon, pepperoni, spam or other meats and cheese in the sits and finish cooking the potato. Pretty dang easy and good. They are called Hasselbeck potatoes. What kind of tent is that btw? Thanks for sharing you adventures.
You are welcome, your adventure reminds me of an archaeological story from Maine where university diggers uncovered remains of a thousand year old camp site at the head of Presquile Stream, the shelter had been three meters long one meter wide. It was probably covered with hide, but its hearth revealed fish bones, bird bone, caribou bone, bear bone, beaver bone, and moose bone. If the paleo-indians had had the modern conveniences like your stoves and tools they would have been rejoicing with chants to the ancient spirits of their world.
You’re a brave man, I would be too scared to spend the night in the woods by myself, don’t know if I would do it with several ppl with me. Enjoyed the video though. It looks sooooo cold there!
What tent are you using? I have a couple hot tent set up. Not sure if your tipi can be guyed out or not but if it can it would help keep the snow from sagging from the bottom. I dont know where you are on the AT but are on the northern end I wouldnt worry about bears in Feb. an if you are cooking bacon in your tent I doubt you are. Great video. I just ordered a new Tigoat WiFi stove. I cant wait to do the initial burn in
Rodents are an issue on the trail all year so like to keep food etc out of camp. The box is a nice place to put food but will also hang in trees. Bears don't actually hibernate though do go into a sleep state which they can wake up from. However not a concern this time of the year as you stated. Once we start getting into later March or the first week of April the potential is increased. I used 4 of the 6 side guy lines but the conical shape sil nylon tipi without short wall will sage some. Let me know how the WiFi stove works out. It's on my list. Have bought gear from Ti-Goat before. Thanks for watching!
Just curious why would you cook bacon inside your tent if you were remotely worried about black bears? I realize it is a little early in the season, but spring just after hibernation is when bears are the hungriest. Just curious because I am NOT an experienced woodsman like yourself. Great video and thanks for taking us along.
I love bacon and don't want to cook outside during a storm. That and odds are much much much lower during November to March though they unlike some true hibernators (they keep flop flopping if bears are true hibernators) can technically wake up so will not store food in the tent during any time of the year. During the warmer months with higher bear activities I don't use the tipi tent so also don't cook in it. Anything is possible so I air the tent out and put the food in the bear box or hang it in a tree away from camp. I am really mostly worried about critter damaging the shelter and pack. Odds of an actual physical attack is slight though like CCW will carry the bear spray just incase. Ticks are more of an issue and they gave my Lyme last year but like the bears much much less active in the cold. Thanks for watching .
James W .. ive seen black bear up and around every month of the year hear in the Blue Ridge of Va.. I think sows with cubs may be likely to hibernate though.
A question: you said it's -28F or something? Either way pretty cold: Are there still crows around - respectively can those crows survive when it's that cold and such?
It was positive 28F. Made a point of saying it was not that cold. I have camped in sub zero before. Overall it seems things hunker down but never really thought to listen for crows. Thanks for watching!
Ah ok, my fault then - sorry. PS: It's because I'm feeding some crows - since years now, and now there is a direct cold wind-flow from russia/finnland coming to us to the Alps - making it 14F or so. (just in case hehe: www.meteocentrale.ch/en/weather/weather-for-professionals/film-of-currents/europe.html ) I'm always wondering how they can survive... I guess they are well insulated and they may can warm up during the day when there is sun - the black color of their feathers shall help. But yeah, since I had some very very cold nights.. with camping/outdoors etc.. often enough .. I guess with a core temp well below normal sometimes, I have some empathy towards these so smart and interesting crows - regarding cold nights :)
I noticed from your other video's that you changed stoves. Was there more of an advantage to this model of stove that you went too? @@MegaWoodswalker Kind of curious as to how long it burns as well if completely stocked up... Weight up here doesn't matter because gear in winter is always brought in on a pulk.... so I'm considering going a bit bigger just to maintain the heat over night longer by stocking up the stove before sleep......But you have some good gear, no doubt..... only piece of kit I don't like that you use is that Mora Hatchet... with the amount of wood I go through I need at least a medium sized axe... .. but it's all what works for you I suppose...

They don't really hibernate as they can wake up. I think it's called torpor. In my neck of the woods they tend to be much less active aka in the den from November to March. So you are in bear country and cooking inside the tent so everything will smell like food. Is it Hibernating season? Also you were backpacking, where did the stove come from?
Yes they're hibernating but just the same I aired the tent out and used the box for the food before turning it. The stove is seekoutside.com/wood-stoves/ thanks for watching!
No. That time of year the chances are really really low (but nothing is impossible) as they're in the den till mid march. That said I still air the tent out after cooking and will either hang the food or use a box. It's an easy precaution. Thanks for watching

Yes they're hibernating but just the same I aired the tent out and used the box for the food before turning it. The stove is seekoutside.com/wood-stoves/ thanks for watching!
How in the blazes do you get your knife that sharp?
Sandpaper. 600 gr then 2000 and finally leather strop with green compound. Thanks for watching!
What kind of stove are you using ?
This one. seekoutside.com/sxl-titanium-wood-stove-stovepipe/ Thanks for watching!
Did you ever do a video on the stack robber you built?
No. I should do a video on that and packable stove accessories.. Thanks for watching!
What does the stove look like packed up?
You can see it at 19:48 thanks for watching!
Bear box is there for a reason. You don't mind the risk of cooking in your tent?
No. That time of year the chances are really really low (but nothing is impossible) as they're in the den till mid march. That said I still air the tent out after cooking and will either hang the food or use a box. It's an easy precaution. Thanks for watching
You carried all that stuff in?
Yes. Miles in fact. Thanks for watching!
Seems like you have 1 of every tipi that Kifaru makes. When are the Tut and Sawtooth going to be added to your arsenal? LOL
