    The filing of the hard corners makes all the difference. Great tutorial. I love your “less is more” approach. The results are fantastic and there’s no need to be super aggressive and cause bleeding or trauma.

      I have adopted self-manicure for some months now since my nails were badly seriously damaged from saloon gel application. The difference is noticeable - healthy clean nails. I bow to Jojoba oil 👍🏾 One challenge am slowly working on is how to manicure my right hand as easily as I do my left 🤣 - but am slowly evolving to being ambidextrous ❤️

    Wonderful timing as I had decided last night to never return to nail salons in shopping centres, no more shellac until my nails are grown out and healed. They are so weak. The manicure I get also snips the outside skin and now I know that this is not the cuticle! So, I will be doing my weekly manicure and staying the course for growth. Thank you from seaside Australia.

      Same with me! I am a post-menopausal woman, and my nails got alarmingly dry when my hormones changed. It was this channel that turned everything around for me in terms of my nail care, and would not have figured out on my own that a simple thing like keeping my nails CONSISTENTLY oiled would actually strengthen them! I have much happier and prettier nails again, and when they start getting a bit dry again or a bit peely at the tips, I realize that I was getting lazy about staying on top of keeping them well-oiled.
      I wash my hands many times a day because I live with cats, and I also just like a clean house, so all that water exposure (without replenishing the moisture with creams and oils) was wreaking havoc with my nails.

  • @beau2fulboys
    @beau2fulboys Рік тому +2

    I have to say thank you. I came across your channel about a month or ago and watched your natural nail manicures. I gave your filing tips a shot and have fallen in love with a round/almond shape. My nails were weak & dry. Now my left hand looks fantastic, no breaks, are flexible (but they don't break). I use oil multiple times a day and a rich creamy lotion at night. If only my right hand would catch up, they don't seem to want to cooperate LOL.

Most of my nails beds are curved, but my ring finger on each side has a very flat, straight across nail bed. Should I shape those nails differently? Is there a way to make it look more uniform? A lot of my problem is I have chewed my nails since about 5 yrs old. I chewed them when I was in school a lot and when I worked my 1st job mostly cause of stress. I haven't been as bad the last few yrs. My problem now is biting the skin off around my nails and at the bottom of my nail beds. The skin gets hard like. I start chewing the skin off, then pulling it off. Once I get it off my fingers get sore and are sore for days. I also bite them when they get longer and they are sticking off the tips of my fingers. I have tried to file my nails down but they end up getting to small then I just give up. I know I must must try filing thembdown like what I am seeing in this starter video. I didn't really use the cuticle oil to soften it and push it back. I also never really used the JOJO oil. I tried it for a few days, didn't seem to work so I gave up. I guess this will take about 6 months to get my nails similar to this. I will need to use the oil and lotion every time I wash my hands

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  Рік тому +4

      Nail polish does not help the nails. The strength they are talking about is a coat of plastic over them. It doesn’t make the nail better and it just covers the damage. Extensive wear of polish can further actually weaken the nail.
      Warm oil soak and the skin care I mention in this video is what truly strengthens the nails.

    Hi Anna, thank you so much for your videos - I am working on my look this year and found your channel while searching for natural nail care. I've looked at various videos but don't see a direct answer to this question: Why do you need to nudge the skin fold back and remove the cuticle? If the skin fold is healthy and you're not planning to apply polish (natural nails instead), is this step necessary? There may be another step that I just haven't learned yet in this beginning research, but I'm curious!

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  11 місяців тому

      Hello, thank you so much for your awesome question.
      The reason is mostly- esthetics. People prefer this look. The nails look more neat that way.
      Nudging the skin fold (gently!) and caring for it also helps to prevent painful what people call "hangnails" which really is torn skin.
      This happens when the skin fold is dry, not elastic and stuck a bit too strong to the nail. When this happens as the nail is growing the skin fold stretches. Eventually it usually cracks and the skin breaks. This can be very painful and lead to infection.
      So caring for it and nudging it back allows the skin fold to function properly and sit nicely and neatly around the nail.
      Cuticle only needs to removed when you can see it and you don't like the look or before polishing the nails.
      If polish is applied over the cuticle, it will most likely peel from that area.

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  7 місяців тому +2

      No :). Old wives tale :). Nail plate does not run in 1 direction. It has bunch of randomly arranged cells that don’t run in any particular direction. That’s the top and the bottom of the nail plate. The middle of the nail plate has cells that I positioned more horizontally actually. What matters is the grit you finish filing with.

    Can I paint my nails after applying oil?

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  Рік тому

      You always need to scrub the nails with alcohol before application of polish. If the polish is applied over an oily nail, the polish will peel off.

    My husband constantly picks at the living skin on every finger. I have told him countless times how dangerous it is, but it’s to the point of an OCD. He isn’t even aware he does it until I say something. Drives me insane! I have tried to help him realize how bad it is, but he can’t stop. Help!! 😩

      I will be honest, you can’t help someone who is not wanting the help. Personally I would replace “stop picking” with “start caring for your skin”. People pick because the hard skin bothers them. Skin care will help the hard skin.

      @@TheSalonLife I have tried to show him how to care for the skin around his nails and he sees me taking care of mine many times a day (thanks to your videos). His is just a very (very 😊) bad habit he can’t seem to break. Thanks for responding and for all you do for the nail community!

      My man does the same, it's a stress reaction for him. Whenever he experiences stress, he bites/picks the skin as a sort of stress relief, to the point of bleeding.
      The only thing that would help is a)reducing stressors and b) finding an alternative form of relief.

      Maybe you can start by having your husband just use CeraVe Facial Foaming Cleanser as a hand wash. I have been following Anna's nail advice, but finally using the CeraVe cleanser she recommended really helped the skin around my nails and my hands. Once your husband feels how smooth his hands are maybe he will be encouraged to take the next steps like using an oil after washing and perhaps the Kerasal.
