    Without saying much, this video is a damn good demonstration the shoes. Thanks. I'd have to say it's the best video on this shoe out there.

    And the winner of the "Ugly Shoe" contest is...

      Well, to be fair...HOKA has heard that a lot over the past decade. I guess our solution would be to either run faster or run in the dark if that was an overwhelming concern (and we have a really awesome Petzl headlamp, so the latter sounds kind of fun!).

      @@TheUltraRunningCompany Yes, if one only runs to run faster...
      I run to feel good, to physically and mentally strong and because it's fun.
      There is always someone running faster than you.
      If not today, then tomorrow.
      Accept that, avoid the uglyshoe contest and run because its just really nice to do.
      But you could say, that since its fun to run, then a clownshoe would fit in, really well.
      Then the TenNine is the winning shoe.
      I do not care if someone runs faster than I do, no matter what shoes he is running in.

    I can see those shoes may be useful on snow or mud due to the super wide ground contact, but oh my gosh those butts!

      Thanks Reza. We're with you in that they would float above both (perhaps), but would be a bit concerned about trying to make turns in those conditions (or stop!). We're pretty sure the best use case is somewhat groomed trails pointed downhill. With that said, we had no issue on flat surfaces or climbing to speak of...but to be fair saw no real benefit in those case either. :)

    At 1.59 downhill section it looks like the second runners (Nathan ?) wearing Evo mafates ? And other shots 10/9s

      Good eye, Morgan! Honest truth: The TwnNine a $250 shoe that we have to purchase ourselves. At retail wages, that's a lot of time fitting shoes to justify more than one pair of test shoes, and this shoot took hours of running. So yeah, we swapped for the sake of efficiency and common sense. :) ALSO: we really like the Mafate EVO for that highly technical terrain - it has amazing traction, tons of cushion, and a fantastic shape for descending loose and rocky sections.

      Pez Pounder don’t heelstrke then.

    • @TheUltraRunningCompany
      @TheUltraRunningCompany  4 роки тому

      To be more specific: It's beneficial for heel-strikers as it provides the maximal amount of cushion SHOULD one hit the ground in that manner, but we would prefer folks refined their form to the point that heel-striking was not the issue it is. Our major concern was the this design would ENCOURAGE a heel strike, and we did not necessarily find that to be the case in practice. All things being equal, we do feel that with a lack of focus this shoe runs the risk of encouraging a landing ahead of the body's center of mass, and as such recommend it only for the conditions we cover in our actual review, here: ua-cam.com/video/ll7xPdNPUZY/v-deo.html

      @@TheUltraRunningCompany Have you seen the way Shura Kitata heel strikes through marathons? 2:05:50 Marathon, Olympic silver medallist, maybe don't encourage everyone to run in a way which may be unnatural and unsuited to their bio mechanics.

    • @TheUltraRunningCompany
      @TheUltraRunningCompany  4 роки тому

      @@lostwisdom100 OK. Have you seen the way we discuss heel striking, or is this just a general comment meant to dust up the old heel strike/toe strike argument? If it's the first, we're happy to elaborate. If its the second, we want nothing to do with that. :)
      We go out of our way - in virtually every review and comment we post - to point out the key is that efficient runners land at/under their center of gravity in order to maximize forward momentum and reduce overall impact (strike force) on their body. Landing on the heel simply moves that impact force to a different place in the body vs. a forefoot strike, and we have yet to see solid evidence that one is better than another when either takes place directly beneath or behind the athletes center of gravity.
      Where we DO take issue with heel striking (or, honestly forefoot striking) is when it takes place in front of the body's center of gravity, both slowing the body down by applying slight braking forces with every step and increasing the risk of injury by extending the lower leg out and reducing flex in the full leg (ankle, knee, hip). It is our studied opinion that the ability to flex at those joints and absorb impact within the leg *muscles* is an exceptionally important factor in remaining injury free. Our point with the TenNine (and the issue we specifically mentioned we did not have an issue with in practice) is that if a specific shoe design forces the heel to strike *in front of the center of gravity* in an unnatural way, we would be concerned about the effects on the kinetic chain and on injury.
      Our apologies if we did not elaborate on that completely within this video - we have dozens of reviews up and given the average UA-cam viewer's attention span is well short of our 12-14 minute average review length, we try to minimize the time on each review by repeating philosophical issues in each one. A good summary of our overall philosophy is here: ua-cam.com/video/uNmNOmUNcPs/v-deo.html, and we try to cover some basics in that.
