    This is my first year growing pumpkins. The vine bores took several. I used DE, and then covered it with soil & mulch. So far, so good.

    My problem is the small fly destroying my small pumpkin fruit by inserting worms, how can one prevent that?

      @@MichaelGawesebmainone not sure which pest you're dealing with. The only other pest I know of that lays eggs similar to a vine borer is the pickleworm moth.

    Great video. Just what I have been looking for.
    I haven't figured out how to deal with them along the vine itself. They like to put eggs on the underside of the vine where it touches the ground so I can't see them to remove them. I'm starting to try to bury the vines in some cases but think I will need to resort to using BT, it's just a lot of work to reapply anytime it rains once the patch has really grown.

      @@cuzzourt35 I use a dentist mirror from a kit I got on eBay to find the eggs on the underside. Otherwise just do weekly applications of insecticide. That should take care of any eggs or recently hatched caterpillars.

      I have such a high SVB population that I need to do all three. Traps have really worked for me, although it's never the only thing I have to do. Sorry you are dealing with them too.

      Yeah it's bad. Been coming since mid May non stop. I use the traps, scape eggs, BT, bury vines,

    I had these on one squash plant last year. I was rudely awakened to the realities of bugs in the garden. I previously just had tomatoes and rhubarb. I didn't seem to have any pest problems besides slugs. I just gave them a beer, and that was it.

    Also wrapping aluminum foil around the crown keeps them off the hard to reach spot if you don't want to mound

    • @BackyardPumpkins
      @BackyardPumpkins  3 місяці тому

      @@kevenweaver9266 The issue I had with foil is that it tears easily as the vine thickens in circumference, and just like row covers, the little devils always seem to find a way in. One other benefit to mounding is that the roots that grow on your stem will grow into the mounded soil and become a part of the plant's rooting system, meaning you'll get a stronger plant with bigger fruits, similarly to letting the vines grow across the ground and root at the nodes. This also is another protection against vine borers, especially if you mound over the nodes too.

    I crush the eggs with my finger nail, I can feel the pop as the tiny egg burst. It's so satisfying😊

      Me too but I feel like I waste hours in the garden doing this. I squeeze them between my 2 thumbnails. You have to make sure because sometimes I think they squish and they actually don’t, so I recheck it and then it pops. My vine borers lay dozens of eggs a day, and lays them all over including the tendrils and even between the young flower buds, underneath the leaves between the veins. They are very sneaky!!! I can’t take it anymore, they’re the Bain of my gardening existence!!!

      Yes you know them well! When you see the signs of squash vine borders on your plants, get garden diatomaceous earth, and dust the plants after watering and after the plants have dried. I find that this method works for me, and DE is not harmful for bees and other pollinators.

    We’ve tried everything. If we cover base they lay on leaf stems. We always have to remove them and bury vines in spots. We’ve had an abnormally wet year so far and no spray or dust would have helped. I really dislike VBs.

      @@dustyflats3832 Easier to spot up in the leaf though and haven't damaged the vine. I dislike them too and my friends and relatives just a few blocks over don't even get them and they all grow cucurbits also.

      Me too but, I feel like I waste hours in the garden treating, preventing, and picking eggs. I squeeze them between my 2 thumbnails. My vine borers lay dozens of eggs a day, and lays them all over including the tendrils and even between the young flower buds, underneath the leaves between the veins. They are very sneaky!!! The many things I’ve tried; covered, wrapped, used yellow traps, preventative spraying, planted earlier and later, search for eggs hours, used lure traps, dusted, companion planting, used cinnamon and pepper, neem oil doesn’t work and kills my plants , grown them upright or vined and buried underground, grown in greenhouse, even tried not growing pepo varieties for a couple years, grown resistant and they still get those!!!! I can’t take it anymore, they’re the Bain of my gardening existence!!! I have been battling at least a decade! I didn’t have them before then. They drive me insane and I run around my garden sounding like a trucker!!!
