Pollinating a pumpkin on the 4th of July
Thanks ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
Well a healthy drenching seemed to do the trick. 😂
Your harvest is as beautiful as our farm harvest👍👍👍💯
I love the big one it’s so pretty it looks fake! ❤
👍👍
I did my first garden ever this year. The SVB got me. All my squashes are dead. I have declared war.
Would it be the same as tomatoes that once you see a bit of ripe colour you can harvest?
Yes same thing
This is my first year growing pumpkins. The vine bores took several. I used DE, and then covered it with soil & mulch. So far, so good.
😎👍👍
We’ve tried everything. If we cover base they lay on leaf stems. We always have to remove them and bury vines in spots. We’ve had an abnormally wet year so far and no spray or dust would have helped. I really dislike VBs.
@@dustyflats3832 Easier to spot up in the leaf though and haven't damaged the vine. I dislike them too and my friends and relatives just a few blocks over don't even get them and they all grow cucurbits also.
Me too but, I feel like I waste hours in the garden treating, preventing, and picking eggs. I squeeze them between my 2 thumbnails. My vine borers lay dozens of eggs a day, and lays them all over including the tendrils and even between the young flower buds, underneath the leaves between the veins. They are very sneaky!!! The many things I’ve tried; covered, wrapped, used yellow traps, preventative spraying, planted earlier and later, search for eggs hours, used lure traps, dusted, companion planting, used cinnamon and pepper, neem oil doesn’t work and kills my plants , grown them upright or vined and buried underground, grown in greenhouse, even tried not growing pepo varieties for a couple years, grown resistant and they still get those!!!! I can’t take it anymore, they’re the Bain of my gardening existence!!! I have been battling at least a decade! I didn’t have them before then. They drive me insane and I run around my garden sounding like a trucker!!!
I crush the eggs with my finger nail, I can feel the pop as the tiny egg burst. It's so satisfying😊
Me too but I feel like I waste hours in the garden doing this. I squeeze them between my 2 thumbnails. You have to make sure because sometimes I think they squish and they actually don’t, so I recheck it and then it pops. I can’t take it anymore, they’re the Bain of my gardening existence!!!
Yes you know them well! When you see the signs of squash vine borders on your plants, get garden diatomaceous earth, and dust the plants after watering and after the plants have dried. I find that this method works for me, and DE is not harmful for bees and other pollinators.
Watch out for squash bugs.
Can’t wait for the harvest!
It just seems in today's busy life it just easier to buy the trouble growing things in the store. It's just not worth it.
I'm there too! I'll see you in the produce section!
Humming birds are a very beautiful sight to see..because they come in all colors of the Rainbow 🌈....and they are a very social bird
Great idea about mounding dirt at the stem base. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
That may give the main stem a little more protection but they will just put a hundred eggs elsewhere. ;-(
@@mamajan99 You're probably right. My Squash vines got devastated by the SVB this year unfortunately.
Good job! ❤
My problem is the small fly destroying my small pumpkin fruit by inserting worms, how can one prevent that?
@@MichaelGawesebmainone not sure which pest you're dealing with. The only other pest I know of that lays eggs similar to a vine borer is the pickleworm moth.
Our dog pooped a bunch of seeds out, covered them with dirt and now we have a huge butternut squash plant on our backyard 🙂 No flowers yet though, only leaves.
I had these on one squash plant last year. I was rudely awakened to the realities of bugs in the garden. I previously just had tomatoes and rhubarb. I didn't seem to have any pest problems besides slugs. I just gave them a beer, and that was it.
Thanks for the info i was wondering what to do to help.. New subscriber here from Growing My Own.
Great video. Just what I have been looking for. I haven't figured out how to deal with them along the vine itself. They like to put eggs on the underside of the vine where it touches the ground so I can't see them to remove them. I'm starting to try to bury the vines in some cases but think I will need to resort to using BT, it's just a lot of work to reapply anytime it rains once the patch has really grown.
@@cuzzourt35 I use a dentist mirror from a kit I got on eBay to find the eggs on the underside. Otherwise just do weekly applications of insecticide. That should take care of any eggs or recently hatched caterpillars.
I have such a high SVB population that I need to do all three. Traps have really worked for me, although it's never the only thing I have to do. Sorry you are dealing with them too.
Yeah it's bad. Been coming since mid May non stop. I use the traps, scape eggs, BT, bury vines,
I do not like….
I inject Monterey BT into mine. Have to do it about every 5 days though. I have Spinosad granules. Can those be used somehow? I am trying to get rid of a severe infestation of pillbugs.
@@crazysquirrel9425 spinosad is only effective if the bug eats it. You may want a contact killer for those. I have a lot of them around too but are they really an issue? I don't notice any damage from them.
This video gives me hope. I didnt plant any squash this year because of those things. They are the devil!
@@wtfhomesteadingadventures7832 It's not too late to plant. There are 70 day varieties too.
Thank you very much for the info and advice!
Did it work?
@@Ashers_Art No unfortunately that was the day I learned that pumpkin vines are not hollow like leaf stems. Instead it's better to mulch around the base of the plant so the moth cannot find it. This forces her to lay eggs up higher on the vine or a leaf where they are much easier to remove. Then you can just spray bt or spinosad in case you missed an egg. If the caterpillars do manage to get into the base of the plant after mulching then just use a deep soak of the aforementioned insecticides.
Good info! Hate these little twerps
Also wrapping aluminum foil around the crown keeps them off the hard to reach spot if you don't want to mound
@@kevenweaver9266 The issue I had with foil is that it tears easily as the vine thickens in circumference, and just like row covers, the little devils always seem to find a way in. One other benefit to mounding is that the roots that grow on your stem will grow into the mounded soil and become a part of the plant's rooting system, meaning you'll get a stronger plant with bigger fruits, similarly to letting the vines grow across the ground and root at the nodes. This also is another protection against vine borers, especially if you mound over the nodes too.
Good information on the beetle's and the garden
Is it too late for me to try and grow one ? How would you keep animals away ?
Depends on your first frost date. Try and find one that's already growing maybe from a garden center. For animals I just use the cheap bird netting over the fruits when they start growing
@@BackyardPumpkins Thank you very much.
Nice🎉🎉
Thanks I’ll apply it on my pumpkins tomorrow
hey guy, thanks for your video, i'm curious what are the cups for? I really like the idea of cuttin up a pallet for garden beds. I never thought to do that. I've planted sunflowers before but just stuck the seeds in the ground and they grew normally. Does the cup help keep moisture in? or bugs out?
Gives the roots a little more space to reach before they spread out. Nothing under that bed but amended clay
@@BackyardPumpkins Great idea, thank you!
Thanks!
Beautiful
How exciting!!
Thank you so much, I will do exactly this as soon as the flowers open up again. I got 1 tiny pumpkin so far! So exciting!
Who would have thought I would find pumpkin porn on the internet? LOL just kidding.

U Go Girl!
I guess nobody wants to go home empty-handed
Thanks for doing the experiment! Are you injecting Captain Jack's into the stems? If so, has it harmed your plants? Battle is commencing here in the Midwest in my own garden with the same larvae.
You can inject it if you wish but if you can get a needle in there then just skewer the caterpillar. You could use a wire too. Spray Captain Jack's afterward.
@@BackyardPumpkins Thanks! I will give it a go :)
