I'm going to leave an update here because I saw a lot of questions from various people and I have some answers for you! Yes you can use crisco. And you don't even have to melt it if you don't want. I didn't! Yes it is 3 Tablespoons of extract and you can be heavy on it as it is only a light lemon flavor. Next year I'm going to incorporate some lemon zest to give them more zip. The last thing I saw people ask is can they freeze and they do! Beautifully! So I hope that helps out! I'm sure mine did not come out as good as the pro, but they were pretty darn good!!!!
I tried them first with Crisco snd they were good. Then I made them using the shortening as it isn’t only vegetable based. They came out so much moister and tastier. I ate so many of them. They were a hit with my neighbors snd freeze beautifully. I made the anise. I made these three times in one week. Next time I will try the lemon. They are so easy and so addictive!
Kimmie, I want to thank you for this recipe. I have a girlfriend who’s from NY and on Sundays after church her momma would take her and her sister to a neighborhood bakery and she would buy cookies very similar to these. Her mother sadly passed away last year after a long battle with cancer. For Christmas I made her a tin of these cookies. I’ve never seen a woman cry like a child like I did that day. She said it was happy tears because it brought back beautiful childhood memories she had with her mother. So, thank you for helping me give her a small piece of her heart back. 💚
This is the first time in 6 years I haven't had to mail cookies to my military son because he is coming home for christmas! Am so happy. But I am going to bake these for him and us. Thank you and merry christmas.
I had these growing up. My grandparents always made them. My grandma and aunts still do. They are one of my favorites!! My grandparents always braided theirs. Thanks for sharing.
This has become my go to Christmas cookie recipe. I make 2 big trays each year for the teachers at my daughters school and they’re always very well received. 🎅
Oh my goodness. I made these yesterday using anise extract. I must have eaten about twenty of them as soon as they came out of the oven. I made a second batch last night because I know they’re going to be s big hit. Every year I search for a recipe to add to my yearly baking. I have four that I repeat each year at Christmas and add others but these are a keeper. I discovered your channel a few months ago through another channel i subscribe to who made your pesto chicken and I’m hooked. I made the pesto chicken, your ma dinner rolls, and several of your crockpot freezer meals. So happy to be a part of your you tube family.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful family recipe! I made them today with 2 of my girls to leave out for santa tonight. These are so delicious and perfect for making with kids. I can tell that we will be making these as a new tradition every year. Merry Christmas to you and your family! xoxo
Ok we made them! Used 1 cup lard and the texture was great. Only problem is we used 3 tablespoons anise as stated in recipe for dough only and it was so powerful we couldnt even eat them. 3 T for lemon is correct but only do 1/2 to 1 tsp of anise if doing that version. Anise is 10x more powerful than the lemon extract. I repeat do not do 3 T anise lol. The cookies turned out amazing. Thank you so much!
I just shared our favorite Christmas cookie recipe this week. I love this recipe and I love trying something new. They seem similar and I think that my kids may really like the lemon extract. Thanks for sharing.
What a lovely tradition.... I hope you dont mind but I am going to steal this and start this with my daughter and sons and have my daughter next year give to another member and so on...... Have sone traditions but always looking for some more that arent stressful or takes away from enjoying xmas instead of the " perfect " xmas !!!!!!!
I know this is an old post, but I just found it today. The cookies look really good! I love lemon, so that's probably the version I will try. I've never made anything with anise, but I can't stand black licorice, and I understand that's what it tastes like. I guess I could do one batch that flavor, and give them all away. lol Anyway, thanks for sharing your family recipe! P.S. Dontcha love how people are telling you that you can't do this, you have to do that, etc.? I'm guessing that if your family has been making them for years, you know what works! Good grief! Thanks again, I'm adding these to my list this year.
I made these cookies today. Used 2 Tbs almond extract, then did an icing with powdered sugar and whipping cream. No sprinkles (too messy - I know I’m a pooper). They are yummy!
I can't wait to try these this year!! I found your UA-cam channel at the beginning of the year, so I missed this video before Christmas. Yes, I realize it's an older video, but it still looks so amazing.
My family also makes this cookie. We make them just like yours; in the ball shape, iced and sprinkles, too. They are the best with coffee, lol! You are absolutely correct on the weather playing a factor. Thanks for posting. Heart warming lifetime of memories with my Nanny and our Italian cookies. ❤
Made these with lard, snow cap in the blue container. Worked out great. Also here in southeast Texas my bake time was 14 mins to get the light golden bottoms
I have a cookie for you to try I'm sure you will love it they are yummy and easy . its a cake cookie. 1 box of chocolate cake mix 2 eggs 1/3c. oil mix all together make spoon out onto a cookie sheet. bake at 350° FOR 10 TO 12 min as soon as you take them out of the oven put 3 mine marshmallows on top when they are cool drizzle melted chocolate over them. I call them hot chocolate cookies. you can also make these with other cake mixes I have done them with a white cake mix and mini marshmallows and white chocolate and they are just as good. and the best part they always stay soft. I also made chocolate chip with the same mix
That was cute. Your 'just shortening' is actually a hydrogenated vegetable oil, identical to a brand name like Crisco. Vegetable shortenings have a higher smoke point than and don't have any taste. Shortenings are good for frying because of that higher smoke point. Vegetable shortenings also have a higher fat content compared to butter which has 80%. Whenever I make Italian anise cookies for Christmas, I always use real butter.
love your videos... I decided to watch some of your cooking videos. I'll have to try this recipe. I make pizzelle with aise , pignoli cookies & italian fig cookies (cucidati) and seven layer (rainbow)
How much Anise are you putting in. 3 T was too much last year. I am assuming based on how strong they are with 3 T that the correct amount is maybe around 1 tsp? Curious how much people that like Anise are using. We are going to make these again soon. Thanks!
These look and sound delicious!!! The box is beautiful. Thank You for sharing these with Us. What is that mixer that You use called. I saw one on another video and wonder where I may buy one?! If You don't mind sharing that with Me? Beautifully decorated cookies also. Merry Christmas to You and Your Family. I Loved hearing Your Babies in the background. I am a Mother and Very, Very proud Grandma too. I hope that You have a Very Happy New Year also.
These look delicious I can't wait to try them and I love your videos! Two questions I have for you are have you ever tried these with almond extract? And is this dough too soft to roll out for cookie cutters?
Yummy! I want to make these! I am making you a little Christmas happy..but it won't be ready for a month or so! You are the best Mommy! Merry Christmas friend!
Kimmy! These are amazing! Have you ever thought of making them as choc chip cookies? No lemon no icing and more of a biscuit? Im gona give it a go.. i think they will be delicious! X
I know this is an old video (I hope you can still see questions pop up!) Could the dough be mixed by hand with a whisk maybe? I don't normally bake so I don't have that machine but really want to try this recipe for the holidays. Thanks in advance :)
I used my stand mixer, but I would imagine you could hand mix it. Mix your wet ingredients first with a whisk, but then mix the dry in a separate bowl, and incorporate the dry into the wet. It's a very moist batter and I think it would work fine using either hand "tools" or even just a hand mixer. I would invite someone to help you, it makes the WHOLE process better.☺
Hello ! I am going to try this recipe this weekend for our annual Christmas cookie baking day and I was wondering if I could make the dough a day ahead and keep in fridge overnight. I'm not sure if the dough would become to stiff is if that would be ok
I'll have to add these cookies to my list to try. By the way My recipes here on UA-cam posted a video recently on packing cookies that are being shipped. I thought of it when you mentioned add more tissue paper so the cookies won't break. My recipes used packing peanuts.
How would this work if did vanilla extract or almond extract instead of lemon ? I feel like 3 Tablespoons is a lot of vanilla... but maybe not for the amount of cookies!
These look and sound SOOOOO DELICIOUS!!! Can You tell Me how many cookies that batch made?! It looked like a lot. YUM!!! I am going to try to give these a try very soon!!! 😊👍🏼😋👋🏼
Happy Holidays! I'm wanting to make these for Christmas as you rave about them so much in your Holiday videos. I have everything you need except the only shortening I could find was Crisco. Should I just not bother or has anybody tried using butter instead? Maybe half crisco, half butter? Thanks!!
These look like cookies my Dad made all the time he called anginetts with lemon I never got the recipe and I have been trying to find it for years! I think this it it! He used shortening that’s all I know and a lot of eggs 😋🥰👍
Hi Kimmy. You mentioned using a shortening that was not vegetable-based but every shortening I find like Crisco is vegetable vegetable-based? Help. Any suggestions?
Liz Pearson. I was looking today and i saw the same but i did find lard which was cheaper and has no taste and smell and no vegatable oil base so i am going to try that.
The Walmart brand of shortening is what she is referencing. They have two kinds, the one that says all vegetable is the store brand Crisco and the other one just says shortening. There is s difference in the flavor. If you haven’t already you need to try her ma’s addicting dinner rolls since it’s almost the same ingredients. Happy new year
I've never made these before.... But just wanted to double check the Anise Extract is it 3 Tablespoons??? (it just seems to be a lot?) or teaspoons? But I want to try your recipe!
+MaybeSi Thank you for replying! I actually did make them! I used a whole little bottle of McCormick Anise..... they are not over-powering at all! Great recipe. Will definitely be making them again.
@@SarahLWhite16 my recommendation is to do these with someone. Especially the decorating part. It makes it go super quick because one is doing the frosting while the other deals with the sprinkles (instead of having to go back and forth.)
I made these a couple of months ago for our church function but I use the lemon extract in the dough and lemon extract in the frosting. This time I made them with the Anice and what flavor to put in the frosting. Lemon?
Can these be frozen? I often make and shape cookie dough into balls and freeze before baking. I ask freezer baked cookies. I know I shouldn't ice them and then freeze, but I was wondering how the unbaked and baked cookies held up to freezing. Thanks for all your videos!!! You're one of my favorite UA-camrs!!!
Does anyone know how much flour is used? I've tried a few recipes and they all come out horrible and I'm trying to surprise my dad for Christmas. I love this video and the instructions. Looks super easy and yummy!
shesinherapron Thank you! This is my first time commenting on youtube so you just taught me something new about the description box :) I'm making them tonight!
She's In Her Apron I have been making these as long as I can remember, we call them "wedding Cookies" I have no idea why, do you think melted butter can give you the same effect as the shortening? I prefer to not use it,
ok problem. In my country we have shortning in one specific store, (we don't use it much in recipes) but it is the vegetable kind wich you said not to use. aah! I want to try these.. what should I do?
I’m seriously making these this year!! 2020 Gonna give to the neighbors and take to the nursing home to brighten my mom’s spirits with this Covid Which she has although we are so grateful she has no symptoms!! 🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️ What does anise taste like? If you don’t put anise in the frosting like you do the lemon what do you put in there? I want to see if I can make these with Monk Fruit in place of sugar and Olive Oil in place of shortening?? I haven’t had shortening in my home in years!! HAHA 😂 ANOTHER QUICK QUESTION 🙋🏼♀️ IS THE LEMON 🍋 REAL LEMONY TASTING!! I wonder if you could make Peppermint?? YUM 😋
@Fowzie Jama, I did use butter and vanilla. The cookies were good, but aren't my personal taste for cookies. These were extremely cakey and I prefer thinner, soft, and chewy with crispy edged cookies.
@@stacygreene3473 I'm like you ~ I don't want to use any shortening/lard & prefer butter, but I know that it won't have the same texture. Butter has moisture whereas the other doesn't.
OMyGosh that mixer is the same kind of mixer my Gma had & we used it to mix Bread Dough so cool ! It broke a long time ago but it was a GOOD MIXER we used it til it's Death. I don't remember the Brand could u tell me Please ;)
I made these for the first time last night and I wanted to add lemon flavor but I chickened out and kept them simple, I should've follow my instincts. Anyway I quickly learned that you need to put the sprinkles on quickly.
theresa bollman, I would use lard (100% pork fat). Definitely not vegetable but if using lard isn"t palatable to you, butter would be another option. Lard (lardo in Italian) is used a lot in Italian pastries and biscuits/cookies.
They look pretty 😍. Nice video .But it's nicer seeing you & hearing Chris . It feels more like we are cooking together the other way just home cooking . This way seems impersonal . Like no I DK it's just not like the reason why I started watching you . But it's very clean clear close up good videoing job .
Ok I just tried to make these and I am all but crying right now. I only have a hand mixer and it is now probably ruined from me throwing it in the mixing bowl!! My dough never would get firm enough to form balls for some reason and I felt like I just kept adding and adding flour...really I think I will cry! Is the flour all purpose since your issuing the baking power and salt? ( it is what I used) and is it sifted or unsifted?? Please Kimmie help me!! Oh the money I just threw away in groceries 🙁🙁🙁
We just finished making these and I made a HUGE blunder and added an extra tablespoon of powder and ended up with mini lemon biscuits (think drop biscuits) BUT in case you make that mistake, they are actually okay (granted I won't do it again... although I'm thinking strawberry shortcake would be great with these as the shortcake 😋) I used butter flavored shortening - that was fine. I got 51 cookies and for the glaze I used about a cup of powdered sugar, 1 t lemon extract and I very carefully used half and half to the desired consistency and it was very yummy. Next time I will recheck the recipe, but my kids were so excited to have these that they didn't care that I blundered!
I'm going to leave an update here because I saw a lot of questions from various people and I have some answers for you! Yes you can use crisco. And you don't even have to melt it if you don't want. Can I use vanilla are almond instead wonder if that would be good

Long time subscriber I always watch this video at Christmas! Your baby is so little in this omg
It’s crazy how fast they grow
I know this video I older.....but I wanted to know what kind of mixer is this?
Brittany Torres I believe it’s a Bosch :)
Does anyone know how much flour is used? I've tried a few recipes and they all come out horrible and I'm trying to surprise my dad for Christmas. I love this video and the instructions. Looks super easy and yummy!
The recipe is in the description box. It starts off with 4 cups of flour. I hope you try them. They are Super easy and very yummy!
shesinherapron Thank you! This is my first time commenting on youtube so you just taught me something new about the description box :) I'm making them tonight!
She's In Her Apron I have been making these as long as I can remember, we call them "wedding Cookies" I have no idea why, do you think melted butter can give you the same effect as the shortening? I prefer to not use it,
the two times I've made these they're abit douguit in the centre still but brown on the bottom. should I cook them longer on a lower temp?
ok problem. In my country we have shortning in one specific store, (we don't use it much in recipes) but it is the vegetable kind wich you said not to use. aah! I want to try these.. what should I do?
I'm sure you could use butter.
HAHA 😂
ANOTHER QUICK QUESTION 🙋🏼♀️ IS THE LEMON 🍋 REAL LEMONY TASTING!! I wonder if you could make Peppermint?? YUM 😋
I can only find Crisco here what can I use instead
Do you still have this mixer?
Yup
How many cookies does this recipe yield?
can i use butter and not shortening?
hmmm I don't know
I'm going to use butter instead of shortening and vanilla instead of lemon/anise.
Stacy Greene ,I want use butter too
Did you make the 🍪
@Fowzie Jama, I did use butter and vanilla.
It's a Bosch Mixer. :)
I made these for the first time last night and I wanted to add lemon flavor but I chickened out and kept them simple, I should've follow my instincts. Anyway I quickly learned that you need to put the sprinkles on quickly.
Isn't shorting made from vegetable oil?
+MaybeSi Also you don't need to melt it. Sorry if it sounds like I'm nit picking...just making it easier for people.
I'm confused. Shortening is either animal or vegetable (like Crisco)...what kind is it, please?
theresa bollman, I would use lard (100% pork fat). Definitely not vegetable but if using lard isn"t palatable to you, butter would be another option. Lard (lardo in Italian) is used a lot in Italian pastries and biscuits/cookies.
Ok, now I understand. IMy grandmother used to use white lard for a few things too. Thank you.
I’ve never see shortening that’s not all vegetable. Is the non vegetable just lard?
They look pretty 😍. Nice video .But it's nicer seeing you & hearing Chris . It feels more like we are cooking together the other way just home cooking . This way seems impersonal . Like no I DK it's just not like the reason why I started watching you . But it's very clean clear close up good videoing job .
Thank U !!! ;)
what is shorting ?
Ok I just tried to make these and I am all but crying right now. I only have a hand mixer and it is now probably ruined from me throwing it in the mixing bowl!! My dough never would get firm enough to form balls for some reason and I felt like I just kept adding and adding flour...really I think I will cry! Is the flour all purpose since your issuing the baking power and salt? ( it is what I used) and is it sifted or unsifted?? Please Kimmie help me!! Oh the money I just threw away in groceries 🙁🙁🙁
grumpy1578 different locations and climates call for different amounts of flour.
We just finished making these and I made a HUGE blunder and added an extra tablespoon of powder and ended up with mini lemon biscuits (think drop biscuits) BUT in case you make that mistake, they are actually okay (granted I won't do it again... although I'm thinking strawberry shortcake would be great with these as the shortcake 😋)
I used butter flavored shortening - that was fine. I got 51 cookies and for the glaze I used about a cup of powdered sugar, 1 t lemon extract and I very carefully used half and half to the desired consistency and it was very yummy. Next time I will recheck the recipe, but my kids were so excited to have these that they didn't care that I blundered!
I can't find plain shortening anywhere, I can only find Crisco - do you or does anyone know of a substitute? Thank you so much!
