Thanks for posting this! I randomly came across some Mumbai Specials on ebay after purchasing a genuine Seiko and they really intrigued me (colorful dials, etc). I'm glad I came across this video before buying because I had no idea that all of this was going on

Amazing! I'm researching to see how people have been fairing with these, I just ordered a Seiko, orient, and Ricoh franken from India to try some hobby watchmaking!

I miss your dissection vids. Seeing the guts of stuff is just too entertaining, especially franken-machines! ✌😁

Just from looking at the front - is that a movement that’s intended to have crown and date window at 3 o clock, so it’s off now because it’s in the wrong place?
Edit: Oh, and it’s a day and date movement, so you get a phantom setting spot on the crown, probably.

Long sleeve lab coat with elastic cuffs is the only way to stop arm hair. You can leave it unzipped or unbuttoned so it won’t be as hot.

Contaminants (arm hair, etc.) are one of the reasons watchmakers wear long sleeves and lab coats.

Hand winding as a basic requirement? Are you not familiar with the legendary SKXs and their 7S26 movement?

In a weird way, mumbai specials are great value because you're buying a handmade watch

It’s such a crapshoot, and it’s a real shame because there are obviously some really skilled watchmakers over there refurbishing old junk watches into nice, inexpensive working pieces. There are just an equal number of people who want to movement to spin long enough to ship.

Seiko SKX and all of the older generations of Seiko 5 use the 7S26 movement, to which the movement in your is a descendant. The 7S26 is a workhorse movement, it's not real accurate and not really complicated. Has a day date and time function but no hacking or hand winding. The non hand winding 7s26 Seiko movement is in millions of watches.

    😂
A lot of basic and higher end automatic watches doesn’t hand wind nor “hack”
