Thank you so much for this. I garden in clay soil too. I’m waiting on an arrival from David Austin. I’m a little worried that I’ve planted some of my favorite roses incorrectly. If they start to struggle, I’ll redo it. Thanks for helping me get it right going forward.

Oh I'm so relieved I'm in MD too , with the clay. My roses came yesterday and I want them in the ground but I was so afraid I feel so much better

Its early to be planting. I got nothing but flowers and pepper seeds in chinese food containers all over the house.
Weather in the NE is a mystery. Last year we had several late freezes and ice/snow into late April. Today was the first real snow all winter.
    The March lion is here.

Great information! I’m going with potted DAs this year. Nothing against bare root roses but it’s hard to ensure you’re getting an own root from certain vendors (as I unfortunately found out).

Fun! Still waiting for my Desdemona bare root to get here. Separated all of my aloes over the weekend though! Gave away 24 baby offshoots, pink and yellow!) My Lady X and Double Delight cuttings are doing very well. Started some pomegranate and white Dragonfruit seeds germinating too. My fridge is still stratifying a whole host of rose seeds too! (about 80! Got my fingers crossed that about a third actually grow). The cold has chilled my roses in the ground, but it only looks like our bizarre (for Arizona) cold and damp winter managed to kill only the Arizona rose bush. (How ironic...) Thanks for sharing this morning!

A very useful tip about ensuring mostly native soil is used. If not, your plants might end up in a sump! 😊

I wish you had the video sooner to help me out because I had my David Austin bare root roses planted just last week. Now I am worried that we have sandy soil, so I put 50% of planting soil to mix in plus it has been raining here like crazy these days. Really worry...wrong soil mixture and soak soil.

I’m in west Tx (zone 8a) so our soil is sandy and rocky caliche (think desert). I don’t put anything into my roses except biotone when planting, and sometimes I may have to add some acidifier or chelated iron later in the season bc we get too alkaline from lack of rain. Other than that, I just mulch heavily so that the roses r able to retain moisture during our long, brutally hot summers. Hope this helps going fwd since I deal with sandy soil as well.

I plan on planting mine like I plant a tree but with the top 2/3 Ocean Forest from foxfarms. Bottom 1/3 a mix of Ocean and leftover clay.
My soil is VERY heavy clay. Almost need dynamite to loosen it LOL
My climate is extremely hot and dry in the summer and very cold and dry in the winter.
My hole is about 20" wide and nearly 3 feet deep.
Water test showed it took over an hour to drain a gallon or so of water away (hence why so deep).
I noticed you mentioned adding gypsum. Why?
Oh and I plan on installing a watering/air pipe into the hole so roots get air they need and I can subirrigate that way.

Very helpful educational video. Waiting for my bareroot roses. I will reach out to Connecticut Rose Society for advice about how to improve our sandy rocky soil for roses. I apply aged cow manure, lobster compost which are pretty much at every garden center and nursery here in my area.❤️

But this winter , after watching your UA-cam video, I used Organic mushroom compost and Coast of Maine cow manure compost to mound up at the bases of my roses.😊
