Nice vid. My new favorite coin after reading that the woman Indian of the Indian head was copied from the famous Crouching Venus. That's so interesting. Another way to remember type 2 of 1886 is imagine the feather is a clock hand. clockwise turn with time.

Get a USB microscope for videos like this. That way you aren't holding a page in one hand, a loop in the other and trying to get it in focus. ;)

HI BEN. THE FLYING EAGLE CENT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE DESIGNS OF ALL TIME. A NICE MS 64 OR 65 IS ON MY BUCKET LIST. RIGHT BEHIND IT IN FAVORITE DESIGNS IS THE INDIAN CENT. I WOULD WANT THE 1877 OR 09S FOR A TYPE SET. I THINK A TYPE SET OF KEY DATES WOULD BE A WONDERFUL COLLECTION. AND IT WOULD BE VALUABLE. *TYU*

It would be a shame for a couple of those cents to be certified -- it is nice as it is in a complete grouping. It is not as if there is any question of authenticity for the 77 here and the grades aren't in the range where you need a grading company to split an XF-45 from an XF-40.

All 1877 cents having the same reverse die makes that mintage amount quite questionable.

Indian cents, at least in uncirculated grades, are super hot right now. I don't understand it but luckily I own a bunch of them. I haven't bought one at auction for a while because there are bidding wars.

Great video, Ben. I finished the Indian head cent collection last year, buying the 1877 from your OPC store. It started with a Whitman album my grandmother had given me some 30 years ago with most of the coins from 1880 forward, including a very nice VF 1909-S, so I was well on my way. Similarly, most are in VG to F and better. Along the way, I actually collected three 1908-S Indians, as I thought they were reasonably priced for their conditions and low mintage.

Without divulging too much, any information on the person who put the set together or what time period it was assembled?

I've been collecting Indian Head cents for the past 20+ years. I have every coin in VF to uncirculated with two exceptions. My 1877 is more "AG-2" that I got for $125. I never purchased a 1909-S. I do have an 1966 MS-64 coin. I began saving F to XF 1908-S IHCs and have about 15 of those. Those are getting really pricey 15-20 years later. Probably the foremost expert on IHC varieties is Richard Snow. He put out a series of books covering all varieties. There are dates over dates, dates in denticles, dates in Liberty's neck, etc. You can still purchase the books on his website: www.indiancent.com/the-flying-eagle-and-indian.html

Thanks for this video! Now looking at my set I cannot decide if my 1864 Bronze in VG is an L or not. I have an L in XF40 that I cracked out in the correct spot, but now I'm worried that I have 2 Ls in my Dansco.

The first set I ever collected was Indian Head Cents as a 10 yo kid in 1982. I still have just a handful of those coins I bought as a kid.

That's one of the better complete sets I've seen on a series. Typically I see some really ugly filler coins, but whoever put this together weighed getting attractive coins and affordability.

Good Video Ben. America's first small-cent was the Flying Eagle cent, which was originally struck in 1856 as a pattern and was produced for mass circulation in 1857 and 1858. For a coin that was produced for only two years (three when counting the popularly collected 1856 presentation piece, which did see limited circulation) at just the Philadelphia Mint, there are a surprising number of issues and varieties. These include the 1856 and 1857 regular issues, 1858 Large or Small Letters varieties, 1858/7 overdates, and proof specimens from 1856 and 1857, as well as proof variants of each the 1858 Small and Large Letters. While the Flying Eagle cent is widely collected as an extension of the Indian Head cent series, Flying Eagle pennies offer enough complexity as a standalone series to provide plenty of challenge to anyone desiring to focus solely on collecting and studying this first incarnation of the small cent.
Approximately 1,800 Flying Eagle cents were struck with the 1856 date for use as presentation pieces, and possibly some were made at a later point to satisfy the demands of collectors who wanted examples of the coin. Although the Flying Eagle cent was in regular production for just two years, more than 40 million were struck and became quite popular with the public.
