Buckingham Palace announced yesterday that Camilla, the Queen Consort will be crowned in May with Queen Mary’s crown, the crown made for and used by Queen Mary at the 1911 coronation. That is a very sensible decision - a good political and aesthetic choice. In this short video I thought I would talk through the history and significance of the crown for you and why I think it is such a good decision.

Hello everybody, thanks for all the comments about the reduction in the number of crown arches. I produced the video before that detail was made public. It will be most interesting to see how that looks.
Hello, I'm a bit disappointed about this! Queen Mary's Crown looks really superb as it is! I think the reduction to 4 half arches will make the Crown look a bit 'empty'. The arches themselves are very thin and beautifully shaped. I hope it will look ok on the day!
I agree with this comment. I think they should have left the arches alone.
Perhaps it will make the crown more comfortable to wear? I am so looking forward to seeing the coronation. I've bought a couple of books on Queen Mary so I will be able to understand any references to her, LOL.
@@reggiebosanquet1525
I *TOTALLY* agree with you !
Why remove 4 out of 8 arches ? It seems to me that this was not necessary... It looks good as it is. The Crown will look quite small compared to King Charles'. Too bad !!!
I would have preferred Queen Camilla to wear the crown of Queen Elizabeth, the wife of King George VI at their Coronations. They were a better match. 👑+👑
@@rickynewport6339
I totally agree with you.✌👍
mary's 1911 crown feels decidedly more art nouveau than art deco to me.. . i get strong deco elements from elizabeth's 1937 crown, but i guess maybe that's just me.
Yes, 1910 is a bit early for the Art Deco style, but within the bounds of the Art Nouveau style. Its Art Nouveau motifs include an emphasis on curvilinear forms and delicate attenuated profiles. Very unlike the Queen Mother's Art Deco crown with its chunky geometric, almost angular forms and profiles.
Actually, I thought South Africa feels the same way about the Cullanan diamonds as India feels about its great stone.
Part of me likes this and part of my still doesn't get it... If they don't alter it, it would still show that controversial diamond's setting... That being said this crown has the same design/ arches as the imperial crown of India and really is from a time of empire, that in itself seems controversial. I know the arches are removable but if they are it will change the look and be a little too small looking imo. I hope they add the small diamond in the monde cross and somehow have the large pear set en Tremblant or dangling in the cross.
When is everyone going to drop the clunky ponderous address of Camilla, as ‘Queen Consort Camilla,’ for heaven’s sake! Referring to her as just the ‘Queen Consort’ sometimes to avoid the repetition of Queen Camilla makes sense, but not the ridiculous piling on of explanatory modification adjectives with her title every time she’s mentioned. Yes everyone knows she’s a consort because she’s the wife of King Charles. Just like every other wife of every other King of England for the last millennium. You don’t hear Queen Mary referred to as Queen Consort Mary in this video, or Alexandra as Queen Consort Alexandra. Or more to the point, Queen Consort Matilde of Belgium, Queen Consort Letitia of Spain, or Queen Consort Sylvia of Sweden. Yes I get that there was an effort to distinguish her title from that of the woman who reigned as Elizabeth II for seven decades, but her death was six months ago. I think everyone with a smidgen of intelligence understands the difference in their respective roles by now. No one constantly went around referring to Charles’ mother as ‘Queen Regnant Elizabeth’ for 70 years.
Give it a rest. She’s Queen Camilla. Enough said.
I know it is annoying, but it is the Palace's choice and until they change it I won't. Primarily as I get moans and groans from people objecting the other way and I've only got so much life to deal with them! I already have filters set up to deal with all the nasty expletives and insults people throw at Her Majesty the Quern.
@@allanbarton oh well then, if that’s the way they want to present her who am I to moan? I don’t think they’re doing her any favours.
@@alexrafe2590 I agree, I think the Palace made a conscious decision with this as it is close to the title Princess Consort that she was expected to take. I do expect them to drop the Consort nonsense after the coronation.
It's beautiful; but why the French Fleur de Lis?
The fleur-de-lys is not a French symbol per se, but a symbol of the purity Virgin Mary - it was part of our medieval and Tudor crowns for that reason and has simply continued. The French adopted it too because of its association with Mary.
Also worth noting that the English and later British Monarchs technically claimed the French Throne from 1340-1800 (originating from a territorial claim by Edward III, ending with the Acts of Union between Great Britain and Ireland, by which point France was a Republic anyway).
@@TheMoonRover Wasn't the claim to France dropped as part of the Treaty of Amiens in 1802, the brief peace between the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars?
This one has always been my favourite. I especially like the delicacy of the curls supporting the central globe/orb.
Agreed, the other crowns though elegant look rather clunky compared to this.
An excellent choice, especially as this crown was created with the intention of being reused by subsequent consorts. Avoids the unnecessary excess of commissioning a new crown, also the controversy of the late Queen Mother's crown.
I'm not sure I agree that Queen Mary's crown will become the go-to crown for the consort in future.
When William and Catherine are crowned, for example, if Camilla is still alive then presumably she would want to wear 'her' crown to that coronation so Catherine would have to find something else - perhaps the queen mother's crown?
I've grown so fond of this series, that whenever a new piece of information about the coronation comes out I immediately wonder: what is Allan's take on this? ☺
Thank you! So glad you're enjoying the series.
Allan, I agree with the choice as it's quite frankly a beautiful crown.
This is a very sensible decision for multiple reasons. I'll be interested to see how the Cullinan stones are set in it. Thanks for keeping us updated on the Coronation!
My pleasure 😊
This is an excellent choice. Queen Mary commissioned and paid for her crown at her own expense and wanted it to be used for future Queens Consort so it is nice that it will finally be used again after 112 years. It also sidesteps the tricky problem of the Koh-i-Noor which is claimed by multiple countries. Cullinan III, IV and V were all the personal property of Queen Mary which she left to her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II and they have been set in her crown before so only minor adjustments will have to be made. As the diamonds were interchangeable they can easily be removed so that Queen Camilla can wear them as brooches again. I look forward to seeing it at the Coronation.
🧡 very apropos x

It's beautiful! I like it more than the others.
I agree, the choice of using Queen Mary's crown is a very sensible idea.
When Queen Mary attended her sons coronation in 1937 the détachable arches were removed and so the crown was worn as a circlet.
The Koh-i-Nor diamond had been removed to be put into the new queen consorts crown. Queen Mary filled the hole in her crown/circlet by using the Cullinan V diamond brooch, perhaps it could be done again for Queen Camilla.
I'm excited and really can't wait! It will be in the middle of the night here in California probably, so I will make up a English tea and something sweet and watch the historic event! I love the fact that Queen Mary designed the crown so the gems were detachable to wear as brooches. That is so practical!
A fabulous choice! I’m so hoping that we will be able to see the Coronation live here in the US. I’m in the East Coast and I think the time change is 5 hours from London. Marking my calendar!!!!!
lots of british americans here will do same - expats too
So interesting. Not having kings and queens don’t know the protocol. Thank you for helping us Yanks work thru all this.
Sorry, but people from the USA are fond of mentioning you don;t know protocol. Neither do the British people as a whole.. its not about protocol. It evolves with different Monarchs and Consorts preferences and prevailing tastes and being mindful for what is going on in the country at the time. A crown is always an extravgent item, by definition, but its telling there has been no push to make a new crown.. there being plenty to choose from in the Crown Jewels.
My pleasure, most Brits won't be familiar with the ins and outs of it either, it's been a long time since we've had a British coronation ceremony! Thanks for watching.
Great video. Your hard work is very much appreciated.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.
I have to admit to liking both of the crowns of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth; I was concerned that removing the four arches over the fleurs-de-lys from Queen Mary's crown would make it appear a little sparce, but it won't be too dissimilar to that of Queen Elizabeth.
Someone I follow on Instagram did a photoshop mock-up of it with just the four half-arches. It looks incredibly elegant.
I wonder if removing the arches is a way of Queen Camilla trying not to be ostentatious. The design is lovely as it is and needs some presence of its own to be visible during the ceremony.
I wonder whether she has a guilty conscience.
Will George wear a crown? Seeing Elizabeth in her child-sized one has me wondering.
He is entitled to wear a coronet.
No Crowns arefor people who are CROWNED in Coronations. He will wear a Coronet.
My crown is not come from the people His from the Lord God Jesus Christ in Heaven 🙏♥️
First I enjoy your channel very much . I'm looking forward to the actual coronation. It would be nice if Camilla was only getting the title of king's consort. Putting queen in front of it seems disrespectful considering all in all. I'm happy they are able to be in love now but the means of achievement was and is still disturbing and not right nor fair to all parties involved.
I don't like that Crown. It looks heavy, uncomfortable and.....well, Old Fashioned.
That Tiara on her in the 👈Left side of the picture looks absolutely stunning on The Queen.
Thank you Alan. May i ask when the next video on the coronation service is coming?
"Queen Consort" is NOT a title, it's a rank. No one ever referred to the Queen Mother; Queen Mary; Queen Alexandra; Queen Adelaide; the Charlottes or even Mary of Modena as "Queen Consort". The very instant Queen Elizabeth died, Camilla became Queen. I'm sick and tired of people trying to devalue Queen Camilla, she is a nice lady and the perfect partner for our new King. As to the Koh-in-Noor diamond, tell Modi to concentrate on his own people and trying to bring India into the modern world without cruelty and racism.
Agreed, it is an expedient at the moment, I'm sure sense will prevail and her proper title used.
The Palace is quoted as saying that the profile of Queen Mary's Crown will be lowered and the half-arches reduced from 8 to 4.
It is very major work being done. The arches are removable, so it would make sense. Hmm, how did I miss that!
Excellent x
This particular crown is so elegant. I love the lines of it. The work that goes into these pieces is incredible.
Thanks for this latest video, your channel has become essential viewing. Cheers from 🇦🇺
Thank you very much, glad you're enjoying my videos!
Allan Barton Thank you for this I have got "Coronation fever" I Cannot wait!!! I Love your channel and the "Coronation Specials "
I had to laugh at Queen Elizabeth referring to the 94 ct and 63 ct Cullinan III and IV as "granny's chips". I can only assume this was delivered tongue-in-cheek. At least I hope so.
Although I have a lot of reservations about the future of the British Monarchy as it presents itself in 2023, I love your work and learning more about the historical basis for what we're seeing today.
I think the chips thing refers to the other gems being so to speak 'leftovers' when Cullinans I and II were created from the raw Cullinan diamond. Cullinans III-IX, although all impressive, are all small in comparison with I and II, which are monsters.
@@Shalott63 it was 3 and 4 in particular when she would where them as a broach. always made me giggle as well
I would assume the very small 'chips' would be integrated in there collection of gems and through out the crown/s
@@gwendixon74 I didn't mean to deny that the term was meant humorously, just to say that it depended on the relative sizes of the stones - big compared with regular diamonds would still be small compared with the two largest. As for what most people would call the chips, I gather that as well as the nine biggest numbered gems I-IX there were also 96 'small brilliants', as well as a lot of small leftover material that they didn't bother to cut into gemstones (perhaps they got used for industrial purposes). I would agree that the small brilliants were probably distributed around, and very probably the smaller diamonds in e.g. Queen Mary's crown, and for that matter other pieces of her jewellery such as the Cullinan V brooch, include a lot from that source.
As glorious as it was, I was never a great fan of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's crown. It seemed jarring next to both St Edward's Crown and the Imperial State Crown. I always felt Queen Mary's crown was a more aesthetically pleasing design, and the decision to re-use it (which seems very likely to have had considerable input from Queen Camilla) is a good one for all the reasons you've sited. I'm trying to imagine how different it will look with four of the half-arches removed but I think it will look even more delicate and somewhat etherial.
I read that the eight arches were considered a European tradition at the time of Queen Alexandra’s coronation. She did several things with her coronation outfit which were continental. She was crowned as a Danish person. I would love to see her gown. She had the gold tissue made in India. It must be magnificent.
@@leahnichol6665 spot on, just do a quick search for the crowns of Denmark, Sweden and Norway and you will see them with the extra arches.
Yes Excellent Choice!! She does deserve it after a Lifetime Commitment to King Charles, ann to Her Country. #GoCamilla
For gem and jewelry nerds like me, it's a dream come true to have the opportunity to view Cullinan I through V at one single event. Hopefully the Camilla Crown, which has a nice ring to it, won't be dismantled following the coronation and thus provide the opportunity for the public to view Cullinan III, IV, and V at the Tower of London. Indeed, most people do not realize that the Cullinan III through IX diamonds were the personal property of the late Queen Elizabeth II and therefore it must be assumed they now belong to her son and heir. Finally, many folks are unaware that the Cullinan Brooch, comprised of Cullinan III and IV, was the most valuable singular object personally owned by Queen Elizabeth II. I hope that mounting these diamonds (along with Cullinan V) into Queen Mary's crown will be seen as an historical precedent, thereby causing these important diamonds to be considered Crown property, just like Cullinan I and II.
So interesting and how typical of our self-effacing and practical new Queen to do this with no ugly drama
Absolutely, I think she is a very impressive person.
Elegant.
I like the design of this crown better anyway. Good choice 👑
I think this is an absolutely exquisite crown! It is very delicate and floral, in keeping with the Coronation Emblem, and the King's interest in flowers. Glad that the Cullinan diamonds, gifted from my country over a century ago, are going to take centre stage!
should of been dianas.. she,ll never be my queen
Hi Allan! Another piece of the puzzle falls into place. I wonder what will be revealed to us next. Blessings to you and your family!
Blessings to you and yours Terry
I cannot see any reason for controversy re the Koh-I- Noor.. It was legally acquired and it is a nonsense to assume that ownership is constantly up for renegotiation.
If Im not mistaken, Queen Elizabeth II was onxe questiones about adding more crown jewels, to which responded "we already have ro many crowns". The jewels are symbols of the monarchy and of England. Time and history give this symbols their importance and Im glad the consort queen will follow those footsteps
I have heard that 4 of its 8 arches will be removed to match the shape of both the Imperial State Crown and St. Edward's Crown.
Hello, yes apparently so. Not sure if it's a good idea!
When Queen Mary wore her crown in 1937, the Cullinan V brooch was placed in the front cross in the place of the kohinoor. Seems likely that this will happen again as they know it can be done.
I like the idea that historic crowns are used instead of having new ones made for coronations. The existing crowns convey a sense of history and continuity in the coronation. Queen Mary's crown is definitely a beauty.
I read that QAlexandra’s crown and QMary’s crown had eight arches - four as Queen and four as Empress. If that’s the true reason for having eight arches, I’m confused why QElizabeth’s 1937 crown had only four arches. Can anyone help with this little mystery? I think I also read yesterday that QCamilla will have four arches removed from the Consort’s crown. That flows with the Queen/Empress 4 + 4 theory.
I'd not heard that theory - you may be on to something there as the Delhi Durbar crown has eight arches too. It would be an easy matter to remove four arches from Queen Mary's crown as they are all detachable, so we may well see that. How interesting.
@@allanbarton Thank you for the insight with the DD Tiara. Could you please put a pin in this little mystery and mention it as a follow up in a future video if you come across any information concerning it? I would be most grateful!! All the best, from Canada!
I heard this theory as well. Would the remaining four arches represent England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
I've always loved Queen Mary's crown so will be sad to see it altered but fully understand and agree with the choice. Wonder how it will be displayed in the future though; original or altered...
I thought the Cullinan's were as controversial as the Koh-i-Noor
Queen Camilla doing great job as Queen
Appreciate the wonderful explanation 👏🏻🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.

Such a good job they had a spare crown to fall back on! I'd have had to go with the other one, not having a spare.
What a stylish design. I love it. Thank you for your description. When I saw it in the newspaper I thought, must hear what Allan has to say. So pleased we have you to talk us through it. 😀😀😀😀
Chris Hunt, I absolutely agree.
Very happy to oblige! Glad you're enjoying these coronation videos 😊
Queen Mary wore the Cullinan V brooch in place of the Koh-i-noor (which was removed for QE's crown) in her crown at the 1936 coronation. Surely that layout would be most likely given that alterations were made to fit the three Cullinans in 1936, two in their original places?
truly an excellent choice. and it's a beautiful crown without the arches too. i wonder if Camilla will wear it as a diadem?
No!!!!
Dr Barton exceptional study as usual very informative and impressive information
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Personally, I think C5 should go into the cross on top, C3 into the round part of the front cross, possibly to dangle? And C4 to remain on the band. I think that would get the balance right. I’m excited to see the result, and love the choice.
My preference as well. I would love to see the jewels mounted to the crown in exactly this way. And bummer that they allegedly will get rid of half of the arches. I think this move is made to make the crown look more modest, no longer "imperial", not too over the top and ostentatious these days.
Thinking about the possible future - I wonder it Camilla will outlive Charles. What will be done during Will´s and Kate´s coronation? Will Camilla then attend that coronation wearing this crown or what. If Charles outlives Camilla, I expect Kate to choose between those 3 crowns. Well that is a decision that will be made when the time comes, influenced by what happens between now and then.
😂 Camilla should have chosen the Queen Alexandra's crown and I am sure that alice keppel would be proud! Hahaha
Do you know whter the number of half arches will be reduced to 4 instead of 8? In my opnion making a new
consort's crown would be silly, as there are enough consort's crowns.
I love your videos and find them very informative. Like you I also love the choice of Queen Mary's crown and think it will look even better with just four half arches. However you are incorrect about Queen Camilla being tall. I have met her and she was the same height as me, which is only five feet three tall. It was Diana who was about five feet eight tall, and through her the two princes are over six feet tall, whereas The King is said to be only five feet nine.
It is a fantastic choice, it will be interesting to see it adapted. That's interesting what you've said about her height, all the sources I read said she was 5 foot 8, the King 5 foot 10 and the late Princess Diana 5 foot 10 too. Is she shorter than the late Queen who was 5 foot 4?
@@allanbarton Her late Majesty was indeed said to be 5'3" to 5'4" tall in her youthful prime but lost a great deal of height in later years. The King, who I have also met, is no more than 5 foot 9" tall and if you see photos of him standing with Queen Camilla she is no taller than his eyebrows. Until Diana joined the royal family all the royal ladies were shorter than average, and I believe Queen Mary, who always looks so imperious, was in reality quite tiny. It has been interesting to see how well her various tiaras and jewellery suit Queen Camilla, and that may have influenced her choice of crown. When The King and Queen are seen next to Catherine, she towers above both of them. Google has a good picture of all three standing together. I now look forward to more of your videos.
I am surprised that the Queen Consort is using Queen Mary's crown instead of Queen Alexandra or Queen Mary of Modena.
Elegant simplicity is the key for the crown's wearer to look classic and stylish - BUT who will be wearing the coronation necklace?
I do think it is good it is reused, however not by Camilla. The two represent everything Mary was disgusted about in her own son. I find it uttermost respectless to the late queen.
Why not use/borrow the cabochon emerald from the Greville kokoshnik tiara to replace the kohinoor the color green is said to represent life, luck, wealth and rebirth all that the Uk should hope to gain under the scepter of the future king and queen consort.
I am most curious to see how the front cross will be reconfigured to accommodate a smaller and differently shaped stone. I do think that reconfiguring the cross is a better choice than leaving a stone crystal in it.
I'm glad they are removing the Koh-i-noor. I also love the elegant and restrained look of it - Art Deco got so many things right!
I think Queen Mary’s crown is more elegant and delicate than the queen mums crown and more stylish than Queen Alexandra’s.
In my opinion, the crown looks unfinished and scanty with the 4 arches.
What coronet will William use: his father's or the Duke of Windsor's?
Extremely interesting, informative and very well presented
Thank you.
The Cullinan V brooch has actually been set in Queen Mary's crown before! When the Koh-i-Noor was removed and given to Queen Elizabeth, the entire brooch was set in its place so Queen Mary could wear the circlet version of her crown. It is hard to see, since none of the pictures of her wearing it are of very good quality, but if you look hard enough you can see that is the case!
It would seem that's the configuration they are going for again then, less four arches.
It is indeed a pity that there don't seem to be any good pictures of Queen Mary's crown as worn in 1937, but I agree that if you know what you're looking for you can just tell from some of them that it contains the Cullinan V brooch in the place of the Koh-i-Noor. This is actually very clever: the Cullinan V stone by itself (18.8 carats) is nothing like large enough to fill the space intended for the Koh-i-Noor (105.6 carats) without substantial remodelling of the frame of the crown, but the brooch as a whole is of the right size to fill the space as it is. Another advantage of doing it this way is that the brooch does not need to be broken up, which would be a pity, as although I think not to modern taste it is by now of considerable interest, both for the history (it was made for Queen Mary to wear at the Delhi durbar) and as an example of jewellery design at the time.

Such rubbish!!! They shouldn’t remove the koh-i-noor from the crown !!!! Because of some cry babies !!!! KEEP IT IN !!!!!
Unfortunately the arches on the Imperial State Crown were not heightened. Which I think was a mistake, as it adds balance.
Agreed, it looks far too squat on the king’s head.
@@allanbarton Wonderful videos you post. Thank you. From a royalist through, and through!
I think all of the stones from the original rough, other biggest, were known as “Grannies chips”, not just 2 & 3
Excellent choice & excellent video. Might be worth noting that the eight half arches refer to the European ancestry of Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary where the 8 were and to an extent are common in contrast to here. In addition 8 half arches are 'imperial' so the reduction to 4 reflects the current political situation.
🇬🇧👑️👀✝️
I believe Alexandra’s crown had 8 half arches as this was the continental style. For Alexandra being a Danish Princess this was suitable , Mary was also a European princess so 8 half arches were appropriate. Queen Elizabeth had 4 arches as she was British, so I assume the change is being made as camilla is British.
I always loved Queen Victorias Jewelry any Russian or German Jewelys too.
Very tasteful, a beautiful choice not to mention getting more than one use out of such a classy and expensive item.
The UK was not exactly in a positive economic situation in 1952, of course,
Indeed, if I don't address this issue people moan in the comments box, if I do address it people moan in the comments box.
@@allanbarton Can't win, eh? I'm old enough to remember post war rationing.
@@paulhwbooth I think people just like to moan.
The design of Queen Mary’s crown suggests that of the Imperial Crown of India, worn only once by George V at the Delhi Durbar. Both have a ‘light’ elegance which the sovereign’s Imperial State crown, whilst magnificent, lacks. It will be fascinating to see how it is refashioned for Queen Camilla.
I hope they keep the feminine arches on it, I like the graduated sizes of the stones.
The arches will also be taken down from 8 to 4 for QC. This is a shame because I think it makes the design far less cohesive.
I saw a mock up of it, and it didn't look right at all. They will need to lower the arches for it to work.
Given the economic situation at the moment, its a wise choice. She will look magnificent!
