Stephanie's voice is the meaning of passion. She sings with her body, soul, heart, and spirit. She sings with EVERYTHING she has, all the time.
Stephanie Mills has basically been able to sing like this since she was a child. 🎵🎤 Church trained ⛪️ and Broadway.
The best singers I've ever met all had their beginnings in the church
@@LesageSinging no lies here!!!
Stephanie Mills was the original Dorothy from the Wiz musical in the 70’s.
This is my favorite performance! Especially, when she sits down and even runs across the stage!! Nothing but well deserved respect from the Apollo audience! 🔥
there’s tons of power in that 4’11 body!
Funny you should say that. I was at an outdoor concert and Stephanie was set to perform. We started hearing her music play and wondered why they didn’t wait for her to sing live because we didn’t see her on stage in the back. Then someone mentions it’s actually her singing. We had to stand up to see her when we could see all the other artist sitting.
I stood up, all 5’2 of me and I could see it was actually her singing. She literally looked like a cute little doll on stage. 😂♥️🥰😍
Even a bit shorter, 4’9” 😂. But that big voice is all in there.
@@MysticStranger AIN’T NO WAY SHE’S THAT SHORT! 😭
This is her signature song from the Broadway play "The Wiz." She's a thespian, so that's why she's so good at communicating emotion. And that's why she hits the pronouns so hard, because she's telling the story of the main character.
And Stephanie is a tiny little person (she's under 5 feet tall) with all that voice!
Im 5ft too well 5ft and 3 quarters. So almost 5'1 but not quite
@@Tink_InTheRoom 🤗Wow ur so wittle🤗, I love it, I could really put you in my pocket Queen☺. I know ur adorably beautiful 🥰, I always wondered what it was like to be short, bcuz I'm 5'8" & ¾, so almost 5'9" & b4 I hurt my back, requiring impending back surgery & also not on the schedule yet I also need BOTH knees replaced due to cartilage is worn out under my knee caps & my left knee also has an old meniscus tear from a BAAAADDD fall & severe ankle sprain last year-the 4th sprain 4 that particular ankle but I probably need these surgeries BECAUSE OF what I'm about to say & that's from high school (92-96) until about 7 yrs ago I only wore no less than 3" heels - no less. So being so tall (the average woman height in USA is 5'5"), I think you can't help but to wonder what being short would be like. God bless🙏🏾.
@@storiking650 well i get you i juzt turned 32 in aug and i was told 2 months before that i need to start planning on going blind so i get what you me with the leg issues cause the reason im going blind is cause of ms and that mainly affects my eyes but i get leg spasm too but becuse my husband is a jack sparrow looking 6'2 guy i get to where 6in heels
@@Tink_InTheRoom be blessed. ❤❤🙏🏽
I have always admired Stephanie. I too am in the 5 ft. Club. For her to have that big voice in that small frame makes me love her even more. Great things truly do come in small packages.
"you have to be athletic to pull this off".....Oh, Ms. Stephanie BEEN about that fitness. A couple of her vids show how ripped she got with her upper body....just...ridiculous!!!! We saw how she was singing belting it out...WHILE running across the stage. I LOVE Stephanie Mills's IMO - she is amazing.
Athletic indeed lol... Even now when she performs she's a pistol!
I am VERY happy that I was put on to her.
Whitney Houston's first national appearance was performing Home so I think you are correct in seeing the influence, especially when you think of this compared to the delivery of your "The Greatest Love of All" reaction.
How awesome was that observation!?
Stephanie Mills is such a gifted vocalist, a lot of this for her is NOT technique or practicing vowel pronunciation, she has a God given gift, it's natural, even her speaking voice is beautiful that's why she's so confident...she was never a pop artist, she has so much soul and that's where her vocals permeate.
Facts thank you for saying this
True but let’s not forget she experienced pop fame and had some songs that were able to touch the pop Charts so she was soul pop at a point in her career but remained true to R&B.
One of the key components of a true star (like Ms Mills) is being able to hone your God given gift... so it looks effortless... when in fact... just as he said... it is very rehersed & controlled. Her talent is God given... her longevity... is practice & control.
@@miwawilliams1339 I'm pretty sure she rehearses but it's not very rehearsed..just like a true rapper who freestyles (which non-black cultures no nothing about) Ms Mills can ad-lib, hum, hit high and lows at the drop of a dime, I don't care how many cups of coffee you drink, one could never sing like Stephanie Mills period
@@h_a_d_d_sx6216 let's be clear... Stephanie had 1 song that crossed over to pop and that was "Never knew love like this before" you must have her mixed up with someone else. Many pop producers tried & failed to make her pop resulting in 3 flop albums, her voice had way too much soul, they didn't know what to do with it.
Stephanie mills is a high soprano but what I lovr about her she knows when to there and know how long to stay there and when to come down. True soprano knows how long to visit every part of her voice even though she can live in the stratosphere she doesn’t need to remain there the entire time
It’s crazy cuz she was trained as a mezzo soprano at julliard
I'm so glad you did Stephanie Mills. The pint sized powerhouse. You should do her song "I've Learned To Respect The Power Of Love". One of my favorite female vocalists. She should have played Dorothy in the movie version of The Wiz. She won the Tony for the role.
Now did you like her version better or Angela Winbush? I think I rocked a little harder with Angela on that song, even though I grew up with and love both.
I’ve been waiting for you to do this. To me, this performance is the GOAT of this song. And reminds us that Stephanie is still a GOAT 😀🎤🎼
Simply put...God sprinkled “magical dust” all over her vocal chords!! 🥰 Edit: One of her dearest friends “per her” you should definitely listen to Angela Windbush!! Angel or I learned to respect the power of love!!
Thanks SO MUCH for this vid! I love ❤ Stephanie Mills! She is a legend and it was thrilling to meet her. Her voice is so distinctive & unmistakable; no one else sounds like her. It's sad she hasn't always gotten her flowers. But again - thanks for spotlighting Ms. Mills. ;)
Stephanie is one of the GOATS, period. Pick any song and see what I mean. BTW, what's up with the video edit?
I love your excitement over how singers use and master their instruments ….
One of the best, underrated, underappreciated singers ever.
Hey, I found you after viewing your reaction to Tamela Mann. I don't sing at all, but I appreciate good music, and this Stephanie Mills song is one of my favs. The reason she punched the I in the song is b/c this song is from The Wiz an adaptation of (The Wizard of Oz) so she was literally saying she wish she was back home after the Tornado. ❤ your review as always!
The way you break music down helps me to understand and appreciate so much more! I really enjoy your channel. I am appreciating the artistry of really good singers more 🤔😊👍🏾
Speak singing because it's theater 🎭
Love this! I think it would interesting to do a break down on Michelle’ song “Something in my heart” She sings with a lot of power but her speaking voice is of a squeaky mouse.
Anita Baker please
I can’t wait for that.
I love these vocal coaches who realize we've grew up listening to this caliber of singing. Yet they are professionals and having their minds constantly blown. This is simply how we do. Whitney and Stephanie were contemporary. Whitney didn't copy Stephanie. Whitney was surrounded by enough legends in her family😂😂
Aretha, Dionne, Cissy, Chaka and whomever else her mother sang background for.
Child check out Keke Wyatt too.
Keke Wyatt is coming up soon. I have had this discussion with another individual who remarked that this level of singing is very common in churches.
I responded to him by saying, "then your normal is excellence."
The statement regarding my mind being blown is absolutely the truth. In just this performance there are SO many ways she approaches tone.
Ke Ke is a bad mamma jamma. She has total control over her vocals. She IS excellent 🎤👄
@@LesageSinging yes, excellence! This ability is one of the foundations of the African experience in America. It brings improvisation, creativity, emotion, and rythm to everything we do. Then you get gospel, all the versions of jazz, Funk music, soul music, r&b, hip hop music & dance, Michael Jordan, Dr J, Deon Sanders, etc.
YES but the fact is even with her family lineage, Whitney Houston was absolutely influenced by Stephanie Mills.
@@1960317 rock and country was created from that too
Stephanie voice is amazing. Glad you finally reacted to this. One of the best live vocal performances I have seen. Stephanie singing and running around the stage, blows my mind!
This and Patti Labelle, never walk alone at the Apollo in 1985.
Child Broadway performer since 9. As a teen she sang this song daily for The Wiz on Broadway. She was phenomenal. Edit: She performed the role for 5 yrs
She later was in a few revivals of that role too!
Stephanie Mills is trained and excellently so.
Would love to hear a critique on Jennifer Holliday’’s version of “Giving Up? I consider it the ultimate belting song
I LOVE 😍 her version of that song 🎵!!
This is one of the performances I recommend for a pro to judge Stephanie as a vocalist . I knew you'd like her
She’s always had one of those amazing vocal voices that’s just never been honored and talked about as much as other popular artists have and oddly enough she never wanted this career in music. She hails from Brooklyn New York and it was her parents who pushed her into the music industry which a lot of people are not aware of so if it weren’t for her parents we wouldn’t know of a Stephanie mills. I remember being in the 6th grade in 1993 and my classmate sounded so beautiful and pristine and I said, your going to get a recording contract and she said she didn’t want to go in that direction and i was shocked, I say that just to say you’d be surprised how many great singers are out there myself included. Thank You for honoring her in this video, she’s from my generation, I grew up with my parents always playing her music in the house and I play her albums till this day.
Stephanie Mills is the G.O.A.T
Stephanie grew up singing at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. After winning Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater six weeks straight at age eleven, she went on to become the opening act for the Isley Brothers. In 1973, Mills was signed to Paramount records and her first single "I Knew It Was Love" was released. She later signed with Motown Records.
So, she really was Home during that performance!
You got it my Brooklyn girl! Genius Artist!
Didn't Stephanie do this song first on Broadway in "The Wiz"? As a flutist I always think it's so very interesting to hear vocal coaches discuss great singers.
You are awesome at this young man. CHEERS!!
This is incredible and I am a huge huge fan of Ms. Mills!!! I’d love to see you react to Phyllis Hyman!!! This was also a voice from the 70’s and 80’s that was undeniable!!! Truly impeccable!!!
ua-cam.com/video/oX05VZzjtCs/v-deo.html
I really appreciate the fact that you break it down these Women who a paved the way for so many people. There are so Many that you can choice from Gladys knight, Chaka khan, Anita Baker the list goes on and on Teena Marie, Mahalia Jackson. I’m so excited for you and this Journey you’re on.
Now it don't matter when covered it. This IS Stephanie Mills song. She sung it 1st at the age of what 11yrs old or so. Childhood Broadway star. Diana Ross took her spot on the movie version of The Whiz as she played Dorothy on Broadway and was actually a child like the character of Dorothy.
I agree it doesn't matter. I title videos in this way in order to get clicks. I would prefer not to, but it's unfortunately a very big difference between when I don't and when I do.
I'll try to make an effort to have the title be more appropriate for the video.
I really appreciate how in depth all your reactions are, the amount of things I’ve learned from watching you god.. I’d love to see you analyze “anytime you need a friend” by mariah at tokyo dome 1996, truly an amazing performance.
I APPRECIATE that you LOVE our LEGENDS!!💖🔥🎶 I can certainly attest that she didn't study anatomy and physiology, and music theory!! THE MOST HIGH gave her THIS!!!! And myself as well!! I am GRATEFUL I have it! SOUL, BABY!!
Best singers I've ever met started in church. I happen to love theory and technique, but I 100% agree with you.
And you know her lol stop in church we learn a lot no need to make up stuff we have the best training in church and I'm pretty sure she got a vocal coach from the industry as well plus she's been doing it so long it comes naturally now.
She blew this out the water, Showtime at the Apollo was thee weekend thing to do!
…saw her in St. Louis this month. Incredible!
😵⚰ @ "Who needs 2 breathe 🤷♂️??" 🤣
Rance Allen RIP you gotta watch Rance Allen 😂🙏🏾
And of course the original Dreamgirl Jennifer Holiday. Her performance at the Tony Awards of And I Am Telling You. And this was actually her arrangement which differed from the musical directors but her was better. Next Jennifer Holiday His Eye Is On The Sparrow. The one where she has braids. Absolute Master Class singing. NOE if ya THINK you had your mind blown watch that exact performance of that song by her. Same lady who closed out Aretha's funeral. She's the reason that her version of that Broadway tune was the "Standard" if you can sing THAT song then you can SANG! Breath control has to be off the charts to get anywhere close to where she was. But Jennifer Hudson did good😊. There's also a video of the singing the song together in stage. The originator of the role and the Jennifer from the remake movie version. Jennifer Hudson messed up her words at one point as she was SHOOK! 🤭🙄😂🙏🏾
It was really upsetting to see the condition Chaka Khan was in when she attended the versuz event with Stephanie
Yes. They should’ve been the same, not asleep vs awake💔💔💔💔Stephanie is me @ work. A lot of people are like Chaka. We’re here for the same reason, but you act like you came to deliver mail and was forced to stay
@@ciarrajohnson3849 Chaka has significant unresolved struggles, it's painful to watch, but I hope she can come out of it once more
Drugs are bad. My parents tell me they went to see her in concert, and she passed out.
@@brynneholt1990 Lord have mercy😩😩😩FOR REAL❓⁉️Stephanie always delivers, but Chaka was a shock
@@brynneholt1990 When did they see her?? I saw her in 2019 and she was so healthy and fantastic sounding
Absolutely love your reaction 🥰💐. As you see people defend her fiercely 😂 but it's all love not enough people even know about Stephanie Mills which is a tragedy. I was happy to come across this, you have a new Sub!
What do you mean??? Shes a LEGEND many know of her greatness which is why she has the strong defending fan base that she has.
Stephanie Mills I respect the power of love and I feel good all over are also vocal beauties. She’s an amazing vocalist from Broadway at 9 to Dorothy in the Wiz for 5 years starting when she was 16.
Would you mind reacting to/analyzing Donald Lawrence’s “When Sunday Comes”?
She’s one of my favorite singers she’s doing a concert in March I can’t wait to see her
yay ,i requested this!!!
I am waiting for you to do FANTASIA!!!
Yes God!!! Cannot wait.
Why do you keep telling us what shes doing? It takes away from the song . Talk later please.
Please do “4 Women” by Jill Scott, Ledisi, Kelly Price and Marsha Ambrosius
Great choices! ♥️
Thanks for explaining Stephanie Mills vocal Technique and making sure your audience understands that it takes practice to develop into a great singer.
Obviously you don't know who Stephanie Mills is she started singing in church, and she was on Broadway, She played Dorothy in the Wiz she was a teenager and sang that song every night and brought the house down.
👍📺👀
please do a video of Stephanie Mills -- " something in the way (you make me feel)" performed at the 1989 Apollo which was the same night as this "Home" performance.
Grew up listening to this song and others by Stephanie Mills. She's amazing. So... You gotta listen to Anita Baker. Any one that listens to Anita Baker and sees my comment, could you name a song or two of hers that you love? I'm gonna name a few. Body and Soul, Rapture of love, and Been so long. Keep it going!
365 same ol love. 😊
U should react to Heather Headly "he is" & "In My Mind" a very unique voice and powerful
Hey what happened, you didn't finish the song we didn't hear the ending. Was it too much for you you couldn't finish the song. I know she's Dynamite🧨 she'll blow you away ☄️
Listen to Jennifer Holiday singing "his eyes are on the sparrow " nothing like her and gospel!
Find the video of this same song when she was 15 or 16 in The Wiz on Broadway....I won't even mention Melba Moore. Thanks for what you do!
I gotta go find the original, I feel like I didn't even hear the actual song😂
Soooo glad you did this!!! Love her
This young lady has a gift from God.
Story teller songs often focus on the words instead of soundful melody. I was taught to say and sing all words clearly in singing story teller songs. Love this song...I love to sing this song.. And Stephanie Mills is Phenomenal!!!
Stephanie Mills was a huge influence on Whitney Houston & Madonna as well.
Listen to Never knew love like this before & then play Borderline.
This legend right here " Stephanie Mills" played " Dorothy " on Broadway in The Wiz ( our black version of the Wizard of Oz. Lol
This is her signature song she sang in that production. It was a huge hit! Ran from 1974-1979. The musical won 7 Tony awards.
Her voice.... Is what it is.. stunningly beautiful. Whatever song she sings from the first couple of words we know without seeing ... That's "Stephanie"! Iconic legend!!
Keep doing what you do!! love it!! Please react to Luther Vandross (Superstar) Anita Baker (You Bring Me Joy) and Angela Winbush (Angel)
You know the 👍
Keke Wyatt you’ll never be able to explain her singing
This is a natural gift she just sings and POW. But I don’t think there’s a specific way she does if she has the vocal ability to do it. That’s why I said it’s natural! She said herself she never had vocal training she just sings.
You need to check out Shirley Murdock. You won't be disappointed
I am digging your channel. Did you know, that Stephanie Mills originally recorded the song "Home" when she was only 17 years old on the Broadway stage of The wiz? The arrangements of the original recording were different but still very brilliant 🔥🔥
Wait until she gets to the end... baby. He is in for a treat.
I explained to my children the way Stephanie sings is storytelling. She is telling a story musically, beautifully.
You love picking the artists to give you Dynamite just another one that blow your mind💯👍 thank you so much I really appreciate your channel I thoroughly enjoy it keep up the good work and God bless you🙏💜
Unrelated but have you heard Anita Baker?!
ua-cam.com/video/V8M2tNe2KhU/v-deo.html
This isn't even her best performance of this song!
My favorite song! I love Ms. Stephanie💜
Keep in mind shes 4"11
have you listened to Mahalia Jackson? I think you would enjoy listening to her; she was the first Queen before Aretha Franklin, Whitney, Stephanie, Mariah etc... Aretha would not be Aretha if it wasn't for Mahalia
This guy is nuts trying to understand what Stephanie is doing. It's God given not manufactured. This clown sounds as if he could produced another Stephanie Mills which can't be done.
You said you've heard Jasmine Sullivan sing this and others but did u know that this is Stephanie Mills song. Her career was launched as a child as she played the ORIGINAL Dorothy in THE WIZ which started on Broadway.
She blew the audience away at every performance with this song that ended the show as Dorothy arrived back home.
Love Stephanie....Whitney borrowed a lot from Dionne Warwick. Dionne was a bad girl in the 60's 70's and early 80's
Whitney didn’t borrow from Stephanie. They just had similar foundations singing in the church.
Finally omg lol I was telling you watch this clip since day 1.
P.s. I think you should react to a vid 1st, then do the vocal explanations of the artist.
Please react to Kim Burell Holy Ghost or Calvary!!!
See i think that why im so focused on nasallity is because when i use it like a choice and knowing im doing it im fine but i only want it to be there when i chose it to be not there where it doesn't belong so i want to know what i keep reverting to in my nose. So i can have it be controlled
involuntary Nasality can occur when there is too much air. Alternatively, you may be using some different vowels on the tricky parts of your range. Send me as many recordings as you want Tink. I'll take a look.
Now i wish you could react more to fine sangers like Natalie Cole performing I'm catching hell in 1994 or our love in sinbad concert and dionne warrick i'll never love this way again in count basie celebration and alfie 1976
You should react to Angela Winbush
I love your critique but I feel that you need to start visiting and make a tour of some black churches. And you will find a lot of that Spirit came out of the black churches. Stephanie Mills sang in a black church before she sang the things she's singing now. A lot of the black female artists and m a l e came from black church. Is something that you born with. You cannot be trained she has not had one singing lesson not one.
I love your videos... but you paused and talked way too much in this one... I couldn't even watch the entire video...
I cannae believe you missed out the highlight moment towards the end of the song. Everyone knows the moment I'm referring to. But hey, for the few that do not know to what I am referring, just watch this brilliant performance in it's entirety.
Do some Phyllis Hyman please. She passed in 1995. Another superb voice and classy lady.
Good heavens how many times did you stop the video! How do you even enjoy and let the song unfold by stopping every 3 seconds. Yikes! Stephanie Mills is great, but you should allow the video to play.
"God Is Amazing" (live at the Grammy awards 1984) by the great Deniece Williams.
I enjoy watching you break down what's going on with the singers voice during the performance. I sincerely hope that you go back and just listen to song for enjoyments sake.
You took a three minute song and gave me a headache. I understand what you are doing. But stopping every four seconds is for you . Not your audience.

I am sooooo happy to see this!!!
I am soooooo glad you got to this. I enjoyed your breakdown of Stephanie's voice and sound(s). Yes: totally lush, rich, velvety. I love this performance, it makes me incredibly happy every time I listen to/see it.
Love ❤👏🏾❤👏🏾❤
Thank you so so much for reviewing her she is so so amazing. I just love her. This is HER song, no one can do it like her. Thank YOU!
I like watching you but I think you need to listen to these videos prior. Sometimes you stop tooooooooooo much!
Oh this was magnificent!!
