- Following Russia’s full-scale invasion, the West froze around $400 billion in assets belonging to Russia’s Central Bank and Russian oligarchs. But freezing assets and actually getting them to Ukraine are two separate issues. The Kyiv Independent’s business reporter Dominic Culverwell explains how confiscating the assets could be used to help Ukraine and why it hasn’t happened yet.

Glad to know of your work. Will follow closely from now on. Good summary of Russian asset issues. Keep up the good work. This is what journalism should be like.
Thank you for your kind words!
Thanks for that. I wonder if it would not be possible under sanctions to channel all interest on ruzzian seized assets into a separate account for Ukraine’s immediate use and ‘dédommage’ Ukraine at war’s end after reparations are calculated, holding seized funds as collateral?
Thanks for this complex story made explainable for me a simple person.

USA and EU could steal the frozen assets, but problem is that what country would keep their assets in USA or EU after that?
For USA dollar that would be really bad, because alternative places to store reserve currencies would not be in dollars.
Did not know these details. As an American, I want my country to return frozen assets to Ukraine.

Ukraine should receive the frozen Russian assets and the institutions managing these assets, such as Euroclear, should be given ironclad financial and legal guarantees protecting them from Russian litigation.
