  • In the third video as part of our Travel Itinerary Challenge series, we explore Maui, Hawaii in 4 days and try our best to eat, see, and do as many things as possible based on a prepared itinerary list! Open this up to learn more and see our itinerary ↓
    ~~~~~~
    If this is your first time viewing our videos, welcome and thank you! For some background about this series: in our years traveling together, we found our travel style involves cramming as many things into an itinerary as our body can handle. We plan a rough itinerary or list of things we want to do, see, and eat at our destination.
    Below is the original itinerary we set out to complete. In our Itinerary Challenge Series, we will see how close we get to checking off each item on our list.
      I will come back for more comments but just want to mention that Sliding Sands is one of my favorite Hike on Maui - it's put of this world! Glad you made it there. Next time you come back, stay in the cabins - it's amazing to stay there overnight.
      Christie Carlson Thanks for the recommendation! We had Mama's Fish House listed on our original itinerary list, but sadly we weren't able to try it. Good to know that it can be pricey, but if the food is as good as you say it is then it must be worth the price! 😀
    Awesome job Preston and Krista! Sorry took me so long to check out your Maui video. I did tell people to check you folks out in a live stream I did over a week ago hope you got more subscribers. Funny as one of my viewers said they watched your folks video before they saw the live stream I did from Ala Moana Beach Park so you’re getting seen without any help too. Enjoyed the Maui video! You folks do so my things we never do. Awesome you folks made it down to Hana. We have tried to go down and with narrow two laned windee road I get motion sickness even when I’m the one driving and the local drivers aren’t the most patient. Hope you folks didn’t have to deal with that. Anyways, great job! Aloha 😁🤙🏽
    • @PrestonKrista
      @PrestonKrista  5 років тому
      Thanks so much again for giving us a shout out in your live stream! That is very generous and thoughtful of you to do that. 😆 Glad to hear you enjoyed the Maui video too! The drive on the Road to Hana was pretty intense -- especially on the way back as we ended up driving at night and caught pockets of rain showers too! Fortunately we didn't encounter any situations with local drivers being impatient with visitors like us -- though we'd understand if they did as visitors are the main cause of delay and congestion on the main road to and from the east side of the island. Again thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment. 🙌
      Hi EJ! So excited for the two of you and your upcoming trip in August! We're really glad to hear that our videos have been helpful with trying to decide what you should do! 😃I think it really depends on how you and your husband like to holiday. Do you prefer to relax and unwind and take it easy or would you rather jam pack your days from morning till night to sightsee as much as possible? If you're more the latter, than our videos and the itinerary we did reflect a holiday across 4 islands in 2 weeks, but if you are the former, than 2 weeks on 2 islands should give you a really nice time experiencing the beauty and charms of the Hawaiian Islands. If you decide on 2 islands in 2 weeks, now you'll just have to decide which other island to visit! Let us know what you end up deciding! 🤗
      Hi Corey B. - we're so glad to hear that our videos have been helpful for you in making your lists for your upcoming trip -- especially knowing that you're like us and tend to pack your schedule! 😀As for the taco, Krista has a response: "Now that you mention it, I did eat the taco vertically! 😂But If I can recall, my logic for doing so at the time was because that taco was packed with a heaping amount of fish! If I ate it horizontally then all of the fish pouring over the edges of the hard-shelled taco would have spilled out and I'd have to pick at the fallen fillings with my fingers! LOL" Thanks so much for taking the time to watch our videos and leave us a comment! We really appreciate it!!
    Maui is such a magical place. Spent 10 days there and it just wasn't enough. My favorite was probably the hidden red sand beach on the way to Hana. Had a blast snorkeling at the many beaches, with Slaughterhouse beach probably being my favorite snorkeling experience. Sunrise on Haleakala was pretty amazing too. Stayed in Napili-Honokowai. It was so sad to say goodbye. I can't wait to return. Planned on going again this August but we chose to cancel our summer vacations to Aruba and Maui this year because of the Covid. We'll hopefully reschedule for next year. Cool video by the way. Brought back some great memories. Aloha Mahalo 🤙🏽
      We're so glad that you enjoyed both the video and the concept!! We're also happy to know that we're not the only people who pack activities in their vacations. Since we were mostly out and about the whole day, we chose hotels that were close proximity to the planned routes we made for our itinerary and were also a pick-up stop option for the Haleakala Sunrise Bike & Zipline. We stayed at both the Courtyard by Marriott near Kahului Airport (central-ish location to get an early start for the Road to Hana) and the Residence Inn by Marriott Maui Wailea (a pick up option for the early morning Skyline Eco-Adventures round-trip transportation to Haleakala). Hope this response is helpful! 😄
      Hi Meaghan- We're so glad to hear that you found the video helpful!! Really means a lot to us to hear that. :) As for accommodations via Airbnb and which part of the island really depends on how many day(s) you expect to spend. But as a starter, a pretty "centralish" location to get to places like Hana, Haleakala Upcountry, beaches in the northwest & southwest, would be PAIA. Otherwise, if you're want to hop around different areas, also consider staying at HANA (East Maui) and LAHAINA (Northwest Maui). Hope that helps!
    Good job - loved your adventures. I think that the term “Seven Sacred Pools” is not a real Hawaiian name for the Pools of O’heo, but some travel agencies’ name for it to drum up business and so the name has stuck. I enjoyed your summary of the trip too, and they were all things I would have mentioned (especially the cold at the top of Haleakala!). Also, at certain times of the year, Honolua Bay has the best snorkeling that Maui has to offer. You have to swim out to the left or to the right out further from back of the bay. I’ll be looking for your further adventures. Thanks
      Hi Carol, thank you so much for your thoughtful comment and we appreciate you taking the time to watch and share your thoughts with us! Additionally, thank you for sharing your recommendation for some of the best snorkeling to be found in Maui!       @PrestonKrista  5 років тому
      Hi Corberosa Premium Coffee- thank you for checking out our video and sharing your comment with us! We completely agree that more time should be spent on Maui better experience the pono. (Are we using the context of pono correctly here? It's such a beautiful word with multiple meaning want to make sure we use it properly.) For our first ever visit to the state of Hawaii, we only had 2 weeks and decided that for us we would like to get a high level exposure to various islands. Our hope is to return in the future to dedicate more than just the 2-4 days we spent per island, stay longer, and have a more “slow” immersive visit to better soak in the magical experiences each island has to offer. We’re aware that this form of “rushing around" doesn’t suit everyone’s travel style nor is it the ideal. There is still many ways we can improve and explore different methods of traveling to new and previous destinations while also remaining aware that there are myriad subjective ways of doing so based on individual preferences. Thanks again for taking the time to watch our video and we appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Hope you have a joy-filled day!
    You did a LOT in 4 days!!! IMHO, the best way to experience any of the Hawaiian islands is to plan to spend more time and get to know the culture. No hurry; easy does it; get kissed by the sun; let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep:) Another lovely attraction on Maui is iao valley (eeeow). It's a lush tropical venue and the iao needle has a great story to tell. For visitors who have time, DO take the Expeditions Ferry from Lahaina to Lanai (my island) and plan to spend some time snorkeling at Hulopoe Beach and taking a taxi/shuttle up to Lanai City, a lovely, quaint plantation town where you can dine (Blue Ginger is where most of the locals go) and browse through the art gallery and a few shops. Mahalo and aloha:)
      @PrestonKrista  5 років тому
      Hi Margie, thank you so, so, so much for these lovely suggestions on how to experience Maui & Lanai with more time on the island. We completely agree with you that more time spent on each island is ideal to better know the culture, landscape, and treasures of each place. For our first ever travel to the Hawaiian Islands, we felt that visiting multiple islands in one 2-week trip would suit us since we were quite sure that we'd come back in the future to spend dedicated time on each island for a longer period of time. And after our 2-weeks there and from all the lovely comments we've received, like yours, we certainly know that we have to come back and take our time and relish the beauty each island has to offer. We really appreciate you sharing recommendations for visiting Iao Valley and Lanai and thank you again for checking out our video! :)
    Were there foods you tried that you didn’t like on any of the islands? Or anything you thought was overhyped in travel tips you read before your trip?
    • @PrestonKrista
      @PrestonKrista  5 років тому
      Hi M L, thanks for checking out our video and sharing your question with us -- it's a really good one and has us a bit stumped, to be honest. We really enjoyed the variety of food that we tried on the different islands we visited. For the most part, if you enjoy seafood, you can't go wrong as most of it is fresh and locally caught! As for overhyped travel tips -- we're having a hard time pinpointing anything in particular. But two things that come to mind are to be prepared for the weather. Various islands have such diverse ecological zones (from mountains, deserts, tundra-like environments, rainforests, etc.) that we should have paid more attention to tips about packing for all weathers. If you decide to go to the top of Haleakala on Maui for the sunrise, locals and visitors alike do not joke when they write about how cold it is up there -- it is freezing. We would certainly have worn more layers to stay warm and then peel them off as the day progressed. Also, having more water-resistant or water-proof clothing would have been helpful too as we often got caught in unexpected torrential rain storms (again due to the unique ecosystems each island possesses it creates fluctuating weather patterns, at least in our experience when we visited in the Autumn season.) Sorry that this doesn't directly answer your question, but hope that it's helpful nonetheless! Thanks again for taking the time to watch our video and to reach out! :)
The Dole Tour sounds fun -- we'll have to try that out next time we visit Oahu. We're fairly new to hiking ourselves, and heard that Virginia has some great spots. Do you have any recommendations for hiking spots or even other things we should see, do or eat when visiting VA? Hope you also have a wonderful summer! :D
    What time did you leave for Road to Hana? We're going at the end of July/early August and staying on the west side of the island near Kaanapali Beach. What time should we leave?
    • @PrestonKrista
      @PrestonKrista  5 років тому
      Hi Roswell, we left around 8AM to get started on our drive for the Road to Hana. We read and also heard from locals and others visitors alike, that if you are choosing to do the whole road trip and back in 1 day then the earlier you can get on the road the better. (There is considerable amount of traffic that we hit when we were approaching the town of Paia -- something worth keeping in mind when you're figuring out your timing). Hope that helps! And hope you have a most wonderful trip to Maui later this summer! Let us know how it goes and if you do anything we did or if there things we ought to try for a future visit! :)
    I’m leaving in September to Maui, from watching you guys eat everything from Banana Bread to Garlic Noodles... did you gain weight?
    We are on the Keto Diet and over half of what you guys ate... we could not if we strictly followed the diet.
    Where did you stay and how much would you budget for 7 days there?
    Thanks,
    Dave
    • @PrestonKrista
      @PrestonKrista  4 роки тому
      Hi Dave, Thanks for checking out our video in preparation for your upcoming trip to Maui in September. We ourselves are not practitioners of the Keto Diet or any specific diet, but Maui has a variety of food establishments and we wouldn't be surprised if there places that specifically catered to those who follow Keto or have Keto options. We try to balance out eating with physical activity like walking, hiking, swimming while on a trip, so hard to remember at that point in time whether we gained weight after the trip. As for budgets, it really depends on each individual and how they like to travel (budget, relaxing, action-packed, luxury, etc.) so hard to give you a numeric range. For our accommodations, We stayed at both the Courtyard by Marriott near Kahului Airport (central-ish location to get an early start for the Road to Hana) and the Residence Inn by Marriott Maui Wailea (a pick up option for the early morning Skyline Eco-Adventures round-trip transportation to Haleakala). Hope this response is helpful!
    Great informative video ! My fiancé and I are going to Maui in a couple of weeks and are super excited! I’ve heard from various ppl that I should not drive the road to Hana because it is very dangerous and others say it’s not bad. What’s your opinion on the road to Hana ? Also, should I take cash for the road to Hana? I appreciate your feedback!
    • @PrestonKrista
      @PrestonKrista  5 років тому
      Hi Michael, thank you for checking out our video! Driving the Road to Hana is not dangerous (though Highway 340 on the northwest side of Maui is quite tricky and we don't advise driving it -- we saw a couple getting their car towed from off the side of the very narrow road). While the Road to Hana is a single two-way road that does have a lot of tight pin curves, if you are a cautious driver and adhere to the speed limits, then it can be rather fun. There may be others who try to rubber-neck you and go around you, if that happens, let them pass you and be on their way as you take your time to enjoy the journey on the Road. Having cash handy is always a good idea. :) Hope that helps and hope you have fun and safe travels for your upcoming trip to Maui!
      ROAD TO HANA IS MOST DANGEROUS ROAD OF THE ISLANDS. 5 long hours of 15mph hair pin turns.....not much to see when you get there. Then 5 long horrific hours back. We all still have nightmares.
      @@auntyuber5127 We appreciate you sharing your opinions, though do not appreciate being called liars. Michael Scott asked us our opinions and we're only relaying our experience when we traveled along to the Road to Hana. The decision to take our opinions and act on them is completely up to him, though we hope that our video and from others on UA-cam can be a resource to decide whether or not to try something (That's what we did before we planned our trip and was actually one of thee reasons we started our own channel to see if sharing our experiences can be potentially helpful.) In comparison to another road we drove on (which we mentioned in our initial comment to Michael), based on our opinions, Road to Hana was not dangerous (maybe tedious to drive on if you try to do the whole thing in one shot without stopping, but that's something we did not attempt as we wanted to make pitstops along the way). We are not stating these as facts, they are only our suggestions based on what we personally did. Furthermore, while we understand that your experience left you with bad memories and you're in your rights to share your experience, again, we are saddened to hear you resort to saying we "are straight out lying". We can only hope to be able to foster a sense of honesty and trust with viewers like you and Michael Scott, and it hurts to hear someone like you aunty sandy disparaging us not only on this comment but on multiple comments down thread as well.
      @PrestonKrista  2 роки тому +1
      Yes there were ample stops. We were a bit nervous as well but please take your time, drive slow and enjoy the trip as much as possible. If a parking is full, you can carefully park on the side of the road as well
While we settled on Star Noodle it certainly was hard to choose from the many great restaurant options available! There is still so much to learn about and discover in Maui -- Lahaina being one of those places! :)
      Hey Hans, Krista here. I was feeling lethargic and chilled for sometime and still unclear what caused it.     It’s a vacation, not a competition, slow down and enjoy the island. Do a few things that you enjoy, and leave time to explore and learn about things that you hadn’t thought of before arriving.
    Four days is barely enough time to get over jet lag. Next time, try to devote at least 2 weeks to Maui.
    • @PrestonKrista
      @PrestonKrista  5 років тому
      Hi Jim G- thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment. We appreciate your opinion. This trip featured in the video was part of a larger 2-week first-time visit to Hawaii, and we used it as an opportunity to experience the different islands. We certainly agree that next time we visit Maui it would be nice to devote a substantial amount of time to better explore the island. If you have recommendations for things that we should do for a longer visit we’d love to know your thoughts! Thanks again for your time and thoughts!
      Preston & Krista You had some of the highlights on your list. I really like up country Maui. Use Makawao as a starting point for that area. Follow Olinda road to the end, and you will see a part of Maui that most visitors never get close to. Iao Valley State Park is nice. Circumnavigating the entire island is probably a 2 day process with stops to explore. Also, the narrow roads on the southeast and northwest quadrants are best driven in a jeep with a short wheelbase to make maneuvering easier - and take the top down. The Haiku area gives a bit of local flare. Grandma’s Coffee House on Kula highway is a great look at how things used to be.
      Explore and enjoy.
