I really appreciated the humble nature of yr friend, who was earnest about the amateurish of his fishing ability, something I was able to relate to. Me and my mate get a few, most times we go out, actually average one fish, but we both love our fishing, and chasing Flatties forms a big part of that. I’ve found, little imitations of that M.M.D Splash Prawn, Daiwa Double Clutches. There’s one that’s worked for me, for both Flathead and Bream, the Atomic Crank little wobblers Hardbodies. Biggest fish we’ve caught so far have been in the 60s cm sizes. Still they really go at this size with light tackle, 2500 reels and light rods.😮
Hi Justin. Great to hear you enjoyed this one. Honestly I love taking my mate Muzz out just as much as anyone for the way he goes about his fishing and the whole experience. There’s so much to be said for being able to live it regardless of the numbers of fish. He’s a top bloke and a great fishing mate for sure. Stoked to hear you’ve found one yourself.

Thanks to you im well and truly addicted to fishing and have caught a heap of great fish from watching this channel and all your DVDs. I use the 7 black. It’s amazing mate. An external rode mic with a wind sock, a medium sharp and flat colour profile to edit in later and it’s great for what I do.
At the end of Last winter, Just after Flathead classics was on. I watched your video on slapsticks with the trebble and I tried the same idea with savage 7" swimbait glow in the dark, (first time catching Flathead ever on softplastic or any lure in general) at Jumpinpin. she was fat at 83cm. My god i snapped an image for the record and released her quick in the dip. Mate this channel has inspired me to take up the challenges of lure and softplastic fishing. Theres no better thrill. Thanks for your videos and i look forward to the next.
I have a question about large paddle tail plastics like Berkley Powerbait. Today I had a very large flathead on. I was using my Miller Beast Freak Rod, Shimano Tranx 301, 25lb leader, 30lb Power Pro Braid. I set the hook it stayed on the bottom, taking a powerful 20 foot run then it was gone. Hooks intact including my stinger. What can I do to improve my catch rate on large Swimbaits?
Gutted to hear it came off mate. I play them fairly light once I’ve set the hook. That said, these big baits often catch the big Flathead on the outside of the fave so a genuine hook up is hard. Hence the light play and that has worked for me. If you love chasing big Flathead on swimbaits etc. you have to check out my giant Flathead film if you haven’t seen it already. There’s plenty of stuff in there to assist also mate. Thanks for tuning in ;)
@@mylurebox Some days are diamonds some days are stones. The tantalizing heart in the mouth swimbait fishing has my frothing to go get em. I used the Pre rigged Berkley Powerbait Ripple Shad. The hook in them is a real heavy gauge and the big flathead have tough old mouths. It was heavy and stayed on the bottom and perhaps it rolled. Do you set a tight drag then once hooked loosen it?

Was very cool to hear you guys laughing like that. Brings back many memories from popping for Kingies with mates. I was watching the cast and maybe something you could try is to raise your tip about 2/3 thru the cast and just before the lure lands close the bail arm. As you close the bail arm, drop your rod tip to be pointing at the lure. Ideally you are slowing the cast down in the last meter or so, but controlled as you are dropping your rod tip at the same time. With a bit of practice this will give you a taught line when the lure lands ready to strike straight away. Love your video Bro. Very generous to share your knowledge with us all.
Best time for flatties is during winter? Am I hearing that right or are our climates from NSW to QLD very different this time of year. Generally I’d say it’s hotter up north but could you assume the same sort of patterns would be productive for flathead this time of year my way?
I noticed at the start you are casting the lure out and then closing the bail arm straight away not allowing the lure to sink. Is this because it's shallow there and if I was fishing plastics in say 3-5 metres or more would I open the bail arm and let the lure sink all the way to the bottom first or close the bail arm as soon as the lure hits the water?
Gday Hayden. So sick that picked up on that detail. Mate it’s just super shallow like 1m and at that, I find the lures with big profiles capture the attention of big Flathead as they pass over head ;) so mostly in the 1m range I tend to fish just off the bottom and let the lure fade for pauses and touch down then back up to swim. ;)
Great video again Jonno. I've never had much success with big lures, i loose patience and go back to the smaller ones. I got my pb 69cm on a 50ml Tango Shad last week and that's the most common size i use.I might try taking nothing but the bigger lures out next time.
Managed to catch myself a 90cm beast on the weekend using a live herring, couldn’t explain the feeling of pulling her up. Just a quick question, how would you rate the savage gear mullet imitation swim baits. Looking to get my self some big fish on swim baits.
Mate give em a go for sure. They’re cheaper than everything else around and I’ve certainly seen plenty of fish taken on em. I haven’t used em enough myself but there’s a few great fishos who are getting it done with em so I’ve gotta do the same.
Hey John, great vid. I have a spance of flats near me whoch at high tide is around that 1.3ish at low tide it gets down a foot deep. 1) When fishing the flats do you prefer the start or the end of the run out?
Hi mate. It’s generally the bottom half of the run out that people froth em but it’s hard to know without looking at it. Some banks esp. if there’s a hard edge with bait getting squashed can be good on the run in tide too. Have you tried running those slapstix on the top half of the tide?
I’ve been fishing at least 5 hours a week land based just trying to get some flattys but really haven’t got any I got one last week but that’s it. Got any tips that could help? At the moment I’ve been using zman minnowz, small vibes, little hardbodies and scented zman jerk shads
Maybe slow down, do the old twitch twitch pause, if it is slow I pause for 30sec sometimes.make sure you are using the right lure for the right situation.also try letting that hard body bump the bottom a few times as well. Good luck hope that helps.
@@mylurebox I am getting so many follows and there not committing like they will nudge it and lay behind it on the pause is there anything I can do or just bad luck

Thanks Daryl. If you take a look at the big picture, as you are, I’m sure fisherman like me have contributed an enormous amount to the removal of plastics from our waterways. Many of us, contrary to the belief of those who aren’t involved in the fishing world, have a passionate respect and active role in the improved condition and human impact on our local systems. Maybe hard to understand for some people but actually being on the water a few times a week, it becomes automatic to pick up after others, take 3 for the sea and do our bit to contribute. I regularly research the local water conditions and changes, participate and initiate crowd clean world clean ups for my local. I can certainly understand your logic, you probably meant it just as it reads, so I can take you point. Your profile pic makes me think you’re stirring at best in any case. Happy fishing mate.
While we all appreciate fishermen, campers, 4wdrivers that do the right thing it still doesn’t excuse putting plastic back into the sea. Add up how many bags of soft plastic you’ve used.... now times that by all the fishermen. I’m honestly surprised that it’s even legal.
