Very nice job and finish! Nowadays you could have the covers captured by a 3D scanner and put the data online as a print template. I think many owners of these wonderful loudspeakers who are not so talented in woodworking would be very happy about this.
The carbon wrap looks surprisingly good. Not sure about the rings though. The second stage looks fine as it is. I think the speaker surround rings would look even better cut from solid oak and darkened with walnut dye and a few coats of linseed oil and finished with a bees wax. The grain of the wood would have some synergy with the carbon wrap pattern, but I guess this is just a matter of preference. Nice job anyway.
When i started watching this video, i thought it a terrible idea..... But seeing the results.... it looks fantastic! I never liked the black ash 801s.... mine are walnut and i'm planning to update the wiring, and maybe my crossovers. But no plan to change the looks. I like the natural walnut, and except for one tiny chip at the bottom, my 801's are still in mint condition. They are 23 years old and still sound amazing.
When i at first times. saw this speakers think that's was Rolls Royce speakers no Regrets.sounds like heavenly voices excellent classic music for super Rich Peoples owns this Baby.
I heard one time the 802 S3 matrix which is the sister of this speaker but using 2 woofers ( 7 inch ), no one is better than the other, depends on the room which one will sound better, both are excellent
Very nice job, I think it looks very good. Have you ever thought to replace the old Capacitors. I have the older model 801 Matrix 1979 model. I am thinking of replace the caps even though my speakers sound very very good.
Thank you. My 801 are twenty years old and I don't feel any reduce in their performance. A friend who has the same 801, told me that, he plans to change the capacitors, but up to now he didn't made it. I am curious to see if I will hear any difference, when he will do it.
HI, i have the same 801 as you, i replaced the electrolytic to Solen caps from Madisound,i spent $210 on the project and it made a big difference in improving the sound quality.
Can you talk about what you saw different or her different after you change the caps my speakers sound very good right now but I'm just wondering what I would expect to hear different
Mark Lawless It sounds more open, more detailed and holographic, the electrolytic breaks down slowly over time and may be out of specs by now. It is worth money. By the way is your tweeter cap removable? Mine seems to be stuck, held by the lower lip of the tweeter housing.
The only thing I've ever dismantled from my unit is are the wolfers themselves and I remove the tops of the speakers I've never tried to take any camps off
Which edges do you mean? 801 has an advantage, there is no need to cover, in a continuous way, the top of the speaker, because it has its own fabric cover. In your case (805 matrix), i thing this is gona be a difficult task, if you want a smooth outcome.
It is not real carbon fiber. It is self adhesive membrane with carbon fiber look. I applied it the same way you apply similar foils. You gona need a second person to help you for better outcome.

Thanks. Good luck with the wire and crossover updating. I would like to know about it.
Me too!

I prefer the second step. The extra covers for the woofer and midrange is in my opinion not necessary! Although, great job.
excellent transformation.great looking
Τέλεια δουλειά μπράβο
Ευχαριστώ πολύ.
Estan en venta ..las cajas digo...

Innovative idea.. Any change in sound ?
None
How do u apply the carbon fiber
It is not real carbon fiber. It is self adhesive membrane with carbon fiber look. I applied it the same way you apply similar foils. You gona need a second person to help you for better outcome.
как испортить классический вид
