    Currently I am obsessed with the thought of a 2+2 300zx, mid engine conversion (rip out back seats) with a VR38DETT and AWD. Many would call me crazy but I think it would be fucking amazeballs.

    Great review! I'm a former 300zx TT / Z32 owner myself and you covered it pretty well. Although if I may comment; you should've mentioned how EASY and CHEAP it is to modify the car to get 400 - 420 ish HP at the crank. It's super cheap compared to modern cars (All that's needed is Exhaust, intake, ECU..and underdrive pulley about $1,500 ish?.I remember reading modifications to gain 30 HP on this one Porsche was like $5,000!!!) and if you're a TRUE 300zx TT owner, you know who Greg Dupree is (Owner of Specialty Z and the GOD of Z32's. He personally worked on mine, when I couldn't fix it myself) I had some modifications done and had around 430 - 450 HP and it was a blast to drive. Unfortunately I had to part ways with it...it's a long story. but I digress. Long Live the 300zx TT!

    • @PrometheusOfVideos
      @PrometheusOfVideos 9 років тому +2

      And to add: The VG30DETT motor is very reliable and powerful (stock internals can handle a crazy amount of power) but like with any car, things will wear and tear. And gotta love that cramped engine bay...hah. But I still loved working on it myself (although I swore like a sailor everytime I dropped a tool and it got stuck somewhere instead of hitting the ground like other cars) it also blows when you gotta remove like 20 things to get to one thing. But I still loved my 300zx TT!

    • @kernoleary1394
      @kernoleary1394 9 років тому +3

      +PrometheusOfVideos i agree with you but 1500 is a little too cheap for all that stuff , exhaust 500-1000$, intake (assuming you mean dual selin upgrade) 700$, ecu (chip 100$, new ecu 1500$) lightweight pulley set 400$ .. Things are always pricier than people make them out to be . and those are prices in USD, for a guy like me buying in canada its actually quite expensive to upgrade the Z. but at least we dont need to worry about engine work right !

    • @PrometheusOfVideos
      @PrometheusOfVideos 9 років тому

      +Kern O'Leary Heh yeah...I was off on pricing...(It HAS been 9 years so my memory is kinda hazy... ;-) the ECU I got was only around $150 though (Ash Spec..got my ECU reflashed ) I forget the pricing on the underdrive pulley..but I got that and my exhaust system from Specialty Z...And yeah...labor prices in the US are insane..but their pricing was pretty reasonable considering what a PITA labor is on those VG30DETTs.... lol .

    • @kernoleary1394
      @kernoleary1394 9 років тому

      +PrometheusOfVideos haha i honestly dont mind the labour on them but im lucky enough to have a buddy with basically a full shop for a garage! i got quoted 2200$ to change a waterpump in the summer by a random shop im not even kidding.... bought the oem part from nissan for 250$ and did it ourselves in an afternoon! Yeah i hear greg is a really awesome guy, im really trying to do absolutely everything to this car myself though :) besides machine work. The guys at CZP and Z1 are pretty good guys too and always willing to answer questions :) .
      But hey you should get another Z!! ;) if you dont still have yours

    I've had my 95 NA 2+2 for 15 years and the engine has been rock solid in all that time. Only timing belt change and routine maintenance. I have never owned a more reliable car... And I used to drive a Volvo!

    These cars are amazing! This is my third! Yes third Z car from nissan. First I had two Z31s and then after wanting something a little more daily drivable and that's when I found my now five year old 1991 300zx with JDM body. The car hands down is a true drivers car! With everything at your finger tips it's really hard not to drive the car everyday. I will never stop putting money into her. As of now no major problems have occurred. Injectors have been replaced with new style and timing/120k service has been done. Stage 3+ clutch with some other goodies and only 128k on her. 5spd swapped this thing is like driving a 200K car. It still turns heads and I love that. The car is an attention whore while I hide behind the tint. If you can work on the car yourself your save a lot of money and will almost make it affordable to the true car guy

    First let me say...nice video to honor a truly great car. Next let me say that although you may not be an expert on the car, I thought you did a good job paying tribute to it and highlighting it and in no way did I think you stated you were an expert. In fact, you did say you had only driven it once or twice.
    From a long time Z lover since I was in high school, you either love the Z's or not. I don't think there is much inbetween. I have owned a 1985 300ZX turbo and a 1986 300ZX turbo and loved every minute of both of these cars. My first one unfortunantly was lost to me in an accident but I will tell you that car saved my life! The second one I had to let go in 2003 due to an innept mechanic frying my electrical system. Otherwise both of these vehicle for all the years and miles I owned them were very reliable and a true pleasure to drive. I have wanted to buy another and though now in my 50's, went on a search to find another since my heart still skipped a beat everytime I saw a survivor on the road. My search came to an end early this year and I bought a 1995 300ZX twin turbo and have not regretted a minute of it. Yes, there are issues know to this vehicle like the valve covers always leak but as in anything in life you need to take care of it and do your research first and know what you are getting into if you are not the first owner. Yes, buying a used car does come with issues you may need to address on the Z's but after 20 plus years on these cars, I feel it is to be expected and not a negative. I also think any sports car is going to require maintenance and expense. I will tell you my husband never loved my earlier Z's and hated the turbo lag they had. He loves this Z and feels the 1990-1996 300ZX's are far better than the 1984-1989 one's and no turbo lag. That's not to say I think it's perfect. They made several changes in the 90-96 version I don't like, like not having as much cargo room, no tilt wheel and smaller glove box than in the Z 31's but I feel the Z 32's are better in many other ways. I also feel this is the last great Z also for many reasons and one is the T-Tops which are a joy to have. I have long felt that Nissan needs to redesign the Z and go back to it's roots. No one has to agree with me and I know I am prejudiced when it comes to any year of the Z's. I truly love them all and they will always be for me, my heart car. I just wanted to say Thank You for making a nice video representing a truly classic car. I am enjoying every minute of having a Z again and yes, my heart still skips a beat everytime I open the garage door.

    Steering takes some getting used to from the adaptive steering, It "tightens" and "loosens" the steering depending on speed. I had a 2+2 and loved every second of it. Waiting to move where I have a garage so I can get another '93 2+2 in Silver or White only. Awesome cars for everyday drivers or to baby in a garage. If you wanna know anything just ask, the community is pretty awesome and I know a fair bit as well

    Pretty neat, i always loved the z32.
    Im not sure what defects alot of z32 owners have. But we have a infinity j30 with the na version of this engine and its the exact same engine the z32 has. And the only thing we've had to really spend some money on was getting the timing belt replaced. Since then the typical things like changing oil, plugs, fuel filter, o2 sensors etc are the only things that have went out. But we have had this car for over 10 years.

    I just got a 93 NA convertible Z32 and I’m loving it! My one buddy had a 240sx and the Z32 is it on steroids. The exterior looks great , interior clean its aged well this 25 years.
    I’ve had a lot of dif cars over the years. I’ve owned a 928 Porsche, 99 turbo Mitsubishi eclipse, 97 turbo Acura integra, Kia Forte 1.8 (prettymuchaCivic), and a Honda S2000 2.0L.
    Long story short I had the S2k for ten years and then had to sell it. I was sad and wanted to get a replacement car. I found the Nissan 300zx. Its feels like the Honda S2k even though the Z32 is over 3k pounds. It’s not as fast as the Honda but it reminds me of it on a winding country road, it whispers to me “push me more through the corner”.

    Preventative maintenance is a z32 owners second best friend, engine wire tuck and deletes are his/her first! Lol if you keep an eye out and you know what to look for you can avoid any trouble in many cases. Problem is how cramped the engine bay is and how many wires there are, the cramped area encloses the heat which after 20+ years of constant barraging can make all the wiring quite brittle. So you delete what you dont need to open up space and get rid of useless wires to stop wiring problems in the future and youre set :) should be every z32 owners first diy job!

    Man, at 3:12 you kind of jam it into first before it's at a stop. It takes like half a second (as you say "the transmission and the") for the first gear synchros to speed up the input shaft to match your 10 mph. Do you do that to prove that the transmission is sturdy or do you do that to every car?

    I'm 16 and have a 1990 TT. It is a great car! Mine is making around 400whp and is a thrill to drive. It was so worth saving for years too get. Not currently driving it as it needs a rebuild. #6 cylinder's ring were, from my best guess, fuel starved which worethem out. However this gives me time to take a step back and go through the finer things. Suspension, brakes, tires, and a fully built motor. I can't wait. Anyway, great review! It was very accurate and the best one I have see on UA-cam to this date. I just wish you had gotten to review a regualar TT. They have HICAS and adjustable suspension. Super nice leather interior too!

    I want to say I disagree with one of the comments the 300ZX can be super reliable once you replace all the parts that normally have wear-and-tear being such an old car, that being said I've owned mine for 8 years now with no problems the only thing I've had to do is replace the clutch so I upgrade it with the second stage and yes one of my injectors are starting to fail so I've already ordered the new style injectors

    Pretty good review video all things considered.
    I owned the previous generation ('85) 300zx 2 seat t-top NA. I always liked the version reviewed, but I have never driven one. I personally like the look of the car (stock 'ish) less as time goes by. I think the newer cars are also good cars. I wouldn't say this one is the last great one IMO. But if we look at where the cars were vs their competition at the time of production.... then this Z wins over a newer Z cars.
    This car needs some decent tires ASAP. Hard to find a better bang for the buck than tires.

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  9 років тому

      I should've re-phrased the way I said that in the video. The car actually does have really good summer tires on it, the problem was the rain. If we had had winter tires on the car it would've been a completely different story

    • @CrazyLazyDave
      @CrazyLazyDave 9 років тому

      Roads Untraveled my summer tires are ridiculously awesome in the rain (way better than the crap all seasons I have had before), but if I had a better tire like an r comp or something approaching that then they'd be horrible in the rain I'm sure. I have zero experience with snow tires. I'm in middle Tennessee. Not much snow. No idea how snow tires perform in the rain.

      Z32 owners will disagree Dave lol. The z33 and z34 are good.. But theyre by no means great. I would have no problem owning either, both are fun cars with good engines (except maybe the 1st z33 with the vq35de) and offer a great platform to build off of for low cost. But think back to 1989 if youre old enough, and remember the kind if cars the z32 tt could be compared to. 911's, countaches, 348's, zr1's etc.. They truly started the era of the "japanese supercar" if you will. The definition if greatness in people imo is somebody who is not only good on their own but makes the people around them better. Well the z32 was good on its own, but because of it the Fd rx7, the mk4 supra, the 3000gt vr4, and the nsx were all conceived. The s30 is great for the same reason, it gave the world a whole new outlook on japanese car makers and it gave japanese car makers a new outlook on how to be successful in a very european dominated performance market. Just my two cents. And i dont mean to talk down in the z33 or z34 at all i love both, but they could never do for Nissan what the z32 did. Especially when considering the z32's IMSA dominance.

    • @CrazyLazyDave
      @CrazyLazyDave 9 років тому

      Some Body maybe my comment reads wrong. What you said is pretty much what I said at the end. The Z32 compared to its competition when it was new vs the newer Z cars compared to their competition, Z32 sons hands down no discussion necessary. But I do think the newer cars are great cars.

      Nathan Tillotson if you can find a clean one pay whatever they want.. its the most desirable year. The 96's are sorta oddballs because of the OBD-2 emissions regs.. So if you can find a clean and stock 94 or 95 go for it. They dont really depreciate below 10,000 because they're considered classics. the turbos anyway. The n/a cars cost less.

I'm still yet to see another one. I sold it 4 years ago and I miss it dearly. Best car ever .one of my biggest regrets getting rid of it....I have a video of it on my channel... damn that thing was tuff!

    they look great these cars. I owned two a few years back. A Black 2+2 TT and a silver 2 seater TT. BOTH of 'em kept catching fire! Somehow oil kept leaking onto the still spooling turbos and whoah! Never again. Actually never a turbo of any kind ever again. N/A all the way!

    The 300zx is a amazing car even to this day. You mention the 300zx has alot of flaws however the information you used to make this review is flawed. First off the 300zx 2+2 does not come with a twin turbo version. Second the twin turbo has a HICAS which makes it much more agile than the 2+2. Typical review from a guy who wants to sound like he knows whats he's talking about but he really doesn't. From the way he talks in the end, he sounds like just one of those typical kids who just wants a car that goes and know nothing about maintaining a car. Well I guess thats the kind of attitude you get when mommy and daddy maintain your car for you.

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  9 років тому +3

      If you watch our other feature on the channel you'll find out it's a twin turbo swap and this car has a fantastic story to go with it. If you follow @roadsuntraveled on Instagram you can keep up with what i'm doing, as well as what maintenance i'm doing on my Toyota MR2. Not too sure if you know me or my parents? Sounds like you know absolutely nothing about me lol. Listen to the Roads Untraveled podcast every Monday as well where we talk for an hour a week on cars, engines, mods, and everything.. It's a pretty great way to get to know me better before making assumptions!! No ones forcing you to watch the video, man. Thanks for the view! :)

    • @Phantom650
      @Phantom650 9 років тому +1

      Roads Untraveled A converted 2+2 will not give you the drive that a true twin turbo would of given you. You mention that the car is losing traction. If you knew the car, you'd know that a twin turbo runs wider wheels on the rear than the 2+2. Plus you were driving in the rain so traction is already impaired due to the conversion and the weather. My 300zx is has been completely reliable and still on the road. I've taken care of my car with regular maintenance so your claim that the car is unreliable is completely absurd. But like I said, kids today let their parents maintain their cars and start acting like brats when their cars break down when they've done nothing but neglect it. Also if the car is losing traction, it might help not to put cheap tires on it.

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  9 років тому

      Phantom650 *sigh* We only had this car for two days and I thought it would be awesome to do a review on it, that's all :) no need to get sour about it. I wasn't saying that the loss of traction was a "point" against it or anything, I was simply talking moment by moment and narrating. Also, I never claimed the car was unreliable. Go back and watch the video. The car does not have cheap tires on it, it's got very good ones. They're performance tires though so in the rain they're not much help :p Like I said in the video it's not my car, I was just extremely excited to get a chance to drive one. Anyways, thanks for your thoughts :D

      Phantom650 300zx came in a 2+2 twin turbo from the factory just not in the US, mostly in Japan and Europe. and the Hicas is a Joke and very dangerous. Nothing is more scarier then going around a nice curve while accelerating and have it engage to have the rear end come loose. also the tires were probable good tires, but driving a RWD car even on Dunlope ZII you will break loose on wet pavement.

      Mine is actually super reliable I've had it for 8 years now and I've only replace the clutch solenoid operated it with the second stage, and just now starting to have one of the injectors go out and I've already ordered the new style injectors this is not the failure of the car this is because when they were designed in Japan they were not designed to run with ethanol
