This Guy Built A Teddy Bear Robot Band Because He Hates Playing With Humans (HBO)

- It's bad enough we're worried about robots taking our jobs - they're much cheaper, more efficient, less likely to complain or cause problems, better than us at basically everything - but they can even make better bandmates.
Jay “J-Bot” Vance knows this quite well. As the lead singer, songwriter, choreographer, and builder of the robotic band Teddy Bear Orchestra, he long ago did away with human bandmates.
“There's egos. There's emotions. Some people might be on drugs,” Vance told VICE News. "I have no problem with drugs, but some people, you know, they might act crazy when they're on drugs.”
Unlike the humans he’s played with, J-Bot’s current bandmates require only levers, pulleys, and blasts of pneumatic air pressure to rock out. Everything is built by hand from mostly salvaged parts, and the teddy bears themselves were given to him by friends.
“There's something about taking stuff that's broken, that has no use to anybody," Vance explained. "And then you turn it into something it was never meant to be. Or you just fix it so it functions. That feeling is the best feeling in the world.”

It's funny that a culture that was spawned in the wake of the DIY and punk rock ethos would have any sledge for a fellow who acknowledges, up front, that his anti-social tendencies made him explore this creative avenue. Someone in a movie once talked about society crying out for a free man and then when they see one they run in fear from him. I get that kind of a vibe from the comment section on this fellow, and that's a shame because I for one applaud him for both his work and his candor.
This is the type of reporting the world needs to see.
I got a chance to see Captured! By Robots live once years ago, and it was a crazy great show. Glad to see J-Bot is still around and rocking with his insane creations.

It was implied that the band mates were the issue and not him. The difference being, that he suggests that the other members are problematic and that he can function better without them. So yes, difference. If I fire you for doing a bad job at work and you tell your friends that you quit because you were getting a new one, would imply a difference in fact and presentation.
That's entirely different. "Not getting along with" doesn't imply the fault is with either party specifically, it implies that the two parties didn't get along. If someone hates you for what ever reason and you tell me you don't get along with that person that doesn't infer any information about who is causing issues in that relationship.
I think the 'not liking people" has been simply simplified. What he meant was in a band situation. He's a pretty chill and cool guy in reality. He has a channel where he works on scooters and mopeds.
We saw him perform last night. What a maniac ! He is brilliant !
to build the robots itself need a mad skill engineering and music programming, he is an eccentric antisocial but he is very smart!

He's pretty multi talented. In the early days of Captured! By Robots, he played guitar. When he was in The Blue meanies, he was a bassist. He also plays keyboard.

I saw Captured by Robots back in 1998. I just randomly remembered the band name today and wanted to see if he was still around and am shocked to see this much attention.

Well for starters, "all 5" "did i miss something"... Guitars have 6 strings. It looks like he has muters low on the neck to handle which strings are playing.

but still how fucking limited are you when you can only create harmonies using 1 fret
if the robot could for example: play first string 1st fret and second string last fret that he could do more
but like this he can do just as much as i can using 1 finger for all threads and muting the strings i dont want to use with my other hand (if i had the skill lol)
but hey you can even use a pen instead of frets and will be able to do more because you can play between frets

This is the kind of man you meet in an apocalyptic wasteland when you're low on rations and supplies and will do anything for a couple of cans of motor oil. He seems just like another nut on your journey but once you spend the night in his garage you notice something creepy. A fuckin teddy bear band comes out of the shadows and starts playing generic metal chords and banging on symbols. You take your wooden bat and smash the head off of one, give a quick uppercut to the other, making sparka fly. The man starts to chuckle and emerges from an unknown location. "You don't like my music?" He says. "Shame. I thought you would want to join my band." You dead sprint on outta there ducking your head as robot teddy bears begin shooting at you with 45s hotglued to their mouths. You didnt get your mottor oil but you got aomething better... A better taste in music than you peeviously thought.

Hate to tell ya, but it's really not all THAT hard... I'd never waste my own time on that (software instruments are my thing) but it's not that technically hard, it would just take FOREVER.
