I’ve been going fast so far but this is where I’m gonna have to take some time and slow down.
I bought an expensive banjo on a bipolar whim ten years back and it's been gathering dust when I realised one cannot just pick it up and play dueling banjo.
But now I'm settled, diagnosed and got a life I didn't realise was possible I've decided to give it a go so Ive dusted the banjo and started the lessons,.
Taking my time and enjoying the process.
🙂😎🙂
So 6 days I’ve managed to hide my banjo and practice from my family! I’ve been bitten by the sound and have set a goal to gift a song for all on the 4 th of July. I feel stupid like a kid again with a little white lie! Admittedly awful so far! Thanks Eli for your style that’s helping me to present a gift to my family. Hopefully I don’t get busted to soon!
That’s awesome Shawn, let me know how it goes!
Good luck this weekend!!
How'd it go?
We wanna know, how'd it go?!
I know!!!
Grew up in a home listenin' to Flatt and Scruggs. My daddy tried to learn banjo, but he did not have the internet and Eli. Bought a banjo a few weeks ago, and Eli's doing an awesome job of teaching me pickin' and I've definitely grinnin'!
That's great! Flatt and Scruggs is what made me decide to learn banjo as well!
That’s awesome! I am brand new to banjo playing and it was The Dillards that did it for me.
My wife bought me a banjo years back because I had always shown interest in learning, just seemed like a funny and cool instrument to learn since I have some 'blue grass' family in my tree. Life has been getting in the way since then and I've just now decided to set aside a bit of time each day to learn and your lessons have been instrumental in allowing me to practice in small increments each day. Just simple little lessons that I can tell are building up the fundamentals on playing the banjo while keeping all the extra noise in the background so I wont be overwhelmed too early. All the skills I've learned so far have had me pracaticing longer than I really have time for and have me feeling very confident in my capabilities of actually learning this instrument.
Thank you deeply. This is an absolute MUST for anyone wanting to learn this instrument -- or really any instrument. I can tell that this is definitely how I'd like to learn other instruments.
And now, it's time to take some time haha. Getting from one roll to another one is quite hard ! I'll take the time needed to get there ! I'm having so much fun, it's nice to learn something new again !
Day 2: I've flown through this much to my surprise and this is where I'll be slowing down progress. Just bought my first banjo last night and been following along. Love the lessons, now I'll be really going slow to get these patters. Thanks Eli :)
Literally sat here refreshing waiting for day six!!!!🪕🪕🪕
Haha, it’s been the same for me. And each lesson is so confusing until you do it and it all clicks. Metronome been such a good tool for keeping things true. Happy days. Hope you’re all enjoying it as much as I am!
That feeling of landing the forward backward roll 4 times in a row for the first time...
euphoria
I know right? :) The banjo turns out to be one of the most satisfying (analog) instruments I've ever played, right up there with the accordion.
You truly have a gift for teaching this craft. Thank you so much
I have to say, I've just started learning the banjo and you've really helped me understand how to play better! Thank you so much!
You’re a blessing for making these videos
Love how you walk through this stuff, well done man :)
Day 1 - 4 - one day each. Day 5 - 1 week. Day 6 - 2 weeks and counting.... At this rate it's gonna take me about 18 years. 😄
I'm really enjoying learning with you! You've broken it down into truly bite sized nuggets.
I was gifted a banjo quite randomly and thought I'd try it out before passing it along. You've given me hope that at I can possibly learn 1 song before I decide what I want to do with it. It's fun to play and an interesting sensory experience, so who knows.
Anyway, I'm having fun and thought youd like to know that your lessons are really well done.
Oof! I hit a wall on this one. I had it in my head the thumb never travels that far South! Going to work on this one for a few days. Brand new to banjo and any stringed instrument. Loving the lessons so far but with picks on my hand I feel handicapped at feeling the strings. But, I'll persevere because I love the sound of the banjo so so much.
I love hearing my bango play to your lessons.. you’re an amazing instructor!
Love these videos thank you! 🙏🏻🤠🪕
Thank you banjo man
this is an amazing lesson!
Thank you!
Thanks!
i love how good im getting because of u
Thank you
JD Crow is a close family friend and even at his age he stays busy and doesn’t really do lessons. Wish I would have gotten started earlier
Would have been nice to have all three next to eachother to screenshot for ease of use for practicing all three. Great video! Thanks for being awesome!
Make sure to download the pdf if the description below!
Great exercises, could you please put time stamps for the different rolls
I got through the other parts no problem but here I'm hitting a wall. This gonna take a while
Maybe because I am on an iPad, but I have never been able to find the playlists or PDFs in comments. Regardless of that, I am very much enjoying your lessons. Pacing and style is great.
Hi Scott, that content is in the video description, not the comments. Glad you like the lessons!
Will your book tell us which roll to play after which cord? I am on page 9 now and enjoying the book very much. You have an excellent product.
My fingers are arguing with me and so far, they're winning.
For some reason, the alternating thumb roll (the first one) and the forward backward roll (the third one) are easy for me, but the forward roll just keeps breaking my brain when I'm trying to repeat it.
And me
I trouble with the third one but, I picked up the first two pretty quickly.
Great videos, picking up quickly. Notice videos go up to day 6. Anymore in the near future?

@@EliGilbertBanjo thank you so much! UA-cam must have been hiding them, or I was not looking in the right place.
Keep it up, you are an fantastic teacher. Easy to follow, fun and informative
Something I learned years ago in a percussion school that might help some - when you're counting, no matter what the rhythm is, count the same. So all quarter notes (and play the mixture of quarters and eighths) or all eights and play the mixture. Disassociating your count from the notes is a good "independence" exercise.
I don't know if I have a particularly small or slidey lap, or a particularly heavy or polished banjo, but mine does not stay put if I'm not keeping a firm grip. I'm finding my right arm is sore and indented from trying to stop the banjo sliding away as I'm playing. What might I be doing wrong? Otherwise, after many yrs of starting to play and then giving up, I'm really enjoying this easy style of learning, thankyou.
I had a similar issue mine is super slick as well.
I found that leaning back in a more relaxed position and then crossing my legs at the knee and using the natural shape of my thigh sitting on top of the other one as a "holder" for the main body of the banjo keeps it from sliding as well as being more comfortable and helps with getting a better angle for my picking hand.
When I put my left leg on top it naturally goes at an angle to my right side (towards my picking hand) with me leaning back a bit it help keeps the banjo from sliding away from me.
@@lucklesscracker I found the same but a strap fixed this for me. Still playing?
Not sure if you answer specific questions, but here it goes: 1) I can't tell how far the end of the pic should protrude from the end of my fingers? Can you show more closely? 2) My fingers pressing on the strings is a problem -- should I try to press more using the tips of my fingers or more the flat side?
The pick position is just preference, and you fret the string with the tips of your fingers👍
Where can I find the next days? I only see up to say six.
Is that Robert Ryan art in the background? 👀
It would be amazingly helpful if at the end of each video you could post the notation for what we learned that day
Check the link in the description!
Is there a way for me to print out the roll patterns so I can practice off line?
Check the link in the description!
I would have loved to see a picture of all the rules it’s hard for me to remember each one by the time I go to look at the other one
Roles
Forward roll has done me I can't get it 😭 two day now so I'll try again tomorrow
I'm really struggling with the second part of the roll
You'll get it!
@@EliGilbertBanjo I can play them just not join them together grrrrrrrrrr also do you teach any other songs in this way
I don't know why I found the forward roll so difficult, but I'll just spend another day of it
if your face was on a t-shirt Che Guevara style - i would wear that !
On the back it should say "30 days and 30 nights"
First we learn so small steps and Teen you show 3 different moves in one lesson. And so i am out Right here. What a pity.
Take as long as you need, there's no rush!
It confuses me so that i have to rewind the Clip to often @@EliGilbertBanjo
