  • Here's a simple drill to learn how to clear your hips in the golf swing. You can literally do this drill anywhere so please give it a try.
    Pick Up Free Samples of The Body Swing here: bodyswing.com/freesamples/
    When you compare pros swings to amateur's swings a clear difference is in the hip rotation at impact. Pros clear their hips while amateurs do not. So if there is a big difference it would mean amateurs are not moving their hips enough.
    This is a great hip drill that you can do literally anywhere. Watch this tip and find a place that works for you. In this tip I am using a cart but you can use a pole, tree or a wall. Anywhere you can hold on you to can be learning how to clear you hips in the golf swing. Do this, and you will hit the ball longer and straighter than ever.

    Paul, Well, another nugget! I’ve been following you for several months and you have helped me so much. I’m 70 and so I’ve ingrained the hit with the arms idea for a long time, but your tips like this one are helping me use my legs and hips in my swing. And it feels so good and so easy on the body! For anyone reading this comment please take some time to follow this guy, you will be amazed how simple he teaches the golf swing! Thank you Paul!

    I just watched another video about starting the transition with the hips from Paul Wilson. Haven’t watched this one yet, but it looks similar. It is so crucial to do it. Paul is saying I’m trying at myself and it’s giving me all kinds of loaded power to pull through the golf shot with before I had to work to get through the golf swing awkwardly now it just flows.

      Yes. You get serious power with the hips as well as super loose wrists.

    Paul, thanks so much for your videos. I’ve been watching, learning, and applying this year. I have to say, my ball striking has improved dramatically. You are 100% correct - think loose, swing easier and in control, and move those hips. My next step is your full program. Thank you. You make it simple and brought fun back into my game.

    Thank you Paul for this video lesson. I will be 80 years old in a few months and I’ve lost many yards on all of my full shots with irons as well as driver. Perhaps your tip today will help me get 20 more yards at least on my drives.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому

      Well, most of my students are over 60 up into their 80's. I tell them to turn (using their legs and hips) and it's like I'm watching them in slow motion. When I say fire the hips I am not messing around. You need to fire them with everything you've got (without hurting yourself). So I say it again to them to fire and no change. If it were my someone tells me to really put the legs and hips into it and I would do it to the best of my ability. If it was too much I would back it off. This way you are actually doing it (although too hard). So really feel the lower. Dig in your feet and turn your hips the best you can. If you are just using arm strength you will never get it. You need to watch how little effort I put in to this for the power I get: ua-cam.com/video/O9jr3G1FF6M/v-deo.html so there I am turning my body to get the power. My wrists are super loose. You don't have to be strong to be loose. So anyone should be able to do this.

      Yes, this is a good one to get the feeling. I didn't think about the fridge. Good one. Get used to the feeling then give it a try. Loose wrists though and no hitting with the arms. If you push it you are driving super hard but the release is late. So hook 5-10 balls on purpose first to speed up the release then fire hips. If so you will kill it dead straight.

  • @patdesmond2016
    @patdesmond2016 3 роки тому

    Hi Paul, Thank you for being so generous with your expertise. You have helped me tremendously. The hip rotation is truly the key. I am playing a lot in an effort to improve and am feeling the torque in my knees. I'd imagine this is a result of my failure to shift my weight properly. It seems as if I shouldn't have shoes with soft spikes so my feet can spin? I'd imagine you get this question often. Thanks again. I am so glad I found your videos.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому

      I really don't get that question that much. If you feel your feet twisting too much then use spikes. I really don't need them but I have done it for a long time. You certainly need to learn the right moves with the lower body. When people are moving too fast and are not good at it they start twisting. Slow down and little and make the moves perfect. Then speed them up.

    • @patdesmond2016
      @patdesmond2016 3 роки тому

      @@paulwilsongolf Thank you for your prompt response. I think you are correct. Fundamentally, though. the back foot needs to spin as the hips rotate and the spikes (soft, of course) keep the ball of the foot from wanting to do that which creates torque on my knee. I assume the solution is to lift the weight off the back foot as the hip turns so the ball of the foot can rotate?

    • @patdesmond2016
      @patdesmond2016 3 роки тому

      weight transfer to the front foot early in the downswing/trunk rotation is probably what I need to incorporate to avoid twisting my back knee.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому +1

      There is a shift but I am not even thinking about it. Throw some balls overhand. I guarantee you will shift and turn.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому +1

      Foot spinning is you grinding on it with too much weight. I am not doing this. I am pushing from the instep. I get to the inner edge of my shoe (edge of big toe) and push. All of your toes are on the ground. So use the inner edge of your shoe then roll up onto the tip of the toe.

    @Paul - 1:27 - Regarding the trail side hip pain. Paused at impact, if we drop a straight line from the rear of your trail shoulder down to the ground, it would probably not make contact with any other part of your body until maybe the ankle or foot. Now couple this anatomical position with the rear knee kicked in towards the target and the trail foot very high off the ground and we get an angle between the top of the femur and the hip joint on the trail side. Two things that will probably reduce the pain significantly. First, delay lifting the trail foot, lift it less, and resist the temptation to push off excessively. Second, and this is the big one; Experiment with having the torso more vertical at impact and less of the trail shoulder hanging back over the trail foot. This will immediately reduce the angle between the top of the femur and the hip joint, and should greatly reduce the pain. I would initially exaggerate having the upper body more towards the target as you progress in the downswing. This will reduce trail side lateral bend, and I speculate the pain will disappear. If it does then you can slowly work the torso backwards a little and see where the pain threshold is. The big challenge of course will be how to maintain distance with this change. If you can stop the trail side foot push and high lift and still get distance, then you've got your solution. Because at that point the trail side lateral bend will occur at a slower rate and to a lesser degree. I see several long hitting pros who use great rotation, get good distance and the trail foot is more along for the ride, not initiating a push. The key here is the angle between the top of the femur and the hip joint. The less you hang back, the less the angle, and less pain. Good luck, and all the best!!

    Paul, just one question. At impact, I know that hip needs to be turned and my head needs to be behind the ball. When I saw other tour players, some of them their heads are much behind the ball or even their bodies are lower. So my question is whether the degree of head behind the ball or lower the body depends on the flexibility of a person’s swing or there are some “guidelines” on them? Thanks for your advice.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому +1

      Depends what they are working on and who they are going to. You are not a tour player. You need to keep this super simple and get the moves. Once you can and you are shooting in the 70's then you can tweak it. You start getting too technical you will never get it. Coil and load going back. Set the hinge at the top. At that moment you are thinking about turning knowing the shift will happen on its own. I am thinking very circular not lateral. I drop down too but in no way have I ever thought about doing that. Most are hitting with arms. As you start to use your body you will start to get the positions pros are in. See it clearly.

    1. What all is included in lower body. I thought it was upto pelvis / belt. However when I do this drill I also end up moving my belly. So what is left behind are my shoulders and chest?
    2. Is separation during downswing damaging in anyway to spine?

    • @paulwilsongolf

      Follow this guy Paul. I'm a big guy, ex athlete, 60ish yrs old. He takes your muscles out of your swing. Brilliant!!!! No more golf injuries, shoulders, elbows, feel fine. I don't wear a glove, 100 rounds a year....no calluses. Thanks Paul!!!

      Paul, you continue to give us gems to work on our swing. All of these in sync with your “effortless swing” have helped me improve so much. And that “easy,loose” swing thought has helped me feel the club head and at 70, my distance with each club is better than when I was younger. And no stress on the body! Thank you!

      Thanks again Paul, you’re method really makes sense. I found that occasionally I actually get it working right and when that happens it is superb. Apart from getting a good result it feels so easy and I have no soreness or fatigue after a round. So great for that golf trip with mates where you might play five rounds over a week long trip. Really battled with forcing myself to be disciplined enough to take the arms out of the swing and do it consistently. I’m a bit of an over thinker and take too many practice swings. I found the practice swings hurt me because I kept bringing the arms back into play for them. Got good improvement once I became more aware of that

      Paul, i enjoy your videos and practice your theory a lot and am hitting the ball much better without back strain.thank you. With such soft wrist do you find the club ( irons ) need to be a bit more upright in lie angle? my clubs have always been a little flat it feels like the toe is a little down at impact

      @Paul Wilson Golf I was in a lot of pain due to swinging wrong and health issues. But your tips make golf fun again, and no pain! I'm excited to continue practicing by playing as often as I can. I forgot to mention: along with accuracy, I got lots more distance, and made more GIR. I'll certainly keep you posted. Thanks again, Paul!

      I'm all in...the club pro from Vegas is going to fix me right up. If I have to take my Ipad Pro out into the yard that's what's gonna happen. Effortless swing and so far it has felt great on this old back.

    If we use both body and arms, do we get more distance than only using body?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому +5

      You may yo may not. Don't you want to be long and straight? 10% fairways using arms. 70% or more with no arms. Take your pick.

    Thinking about using my hips helps me get onto my left foot and to not use my arms and rush the downswing.

    Hi Paul I was try this drill and felt I was losing tempo and how to combine firing lowering hips and tempo together with out rushing my swing to get consistency

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 роки тому +1

      Hit 10 hooks in a row on purpose first. Once you can do that you then start firing the lower body faster and faster until you hit it dead straight. Use the ball as a guide to tell you how hard you need to fire the legs. If you just fire the lower without hooking it first you will hit pushes and push fades.

      It's the woods driver 3 woods that I have the most issues
      I'm 61 .
      I would like consitancy to get ball in fairway ,rough &
      Not to hit in trees ,out bounds ,or even losing the ball which I'm sick

      Those clubs are easy. Just need to see it differently and get used to some new feelings. Watch your ball. This will tell you exactly what you need to do. I touch on it here:

    So hips fire first and arms will follow. Correct. But when hips fires downswing starts.
    Very hard to think about it.
    Tried at the range today but couldn’t come up with it.
    Something is missing.
    In your next video can you please go to slow motion to see how everything works please
    Thanks

      Tee up your ball to make it easier and give you room for error. Do it slow. You are probably trying to drive them at top speed. Slow and get it. Then speed it up never tightening the arms.

    When I try to lead with the hips I block it to the right or I come over the top and pull it left. When I block it right, it feels like I’m coming from the inside. Any suggestions.

    Could lack of rotation cause the chicken wing? Do you have any videos that cure the chicken wing? I think I’ve been doing this for a very long time.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому

      Yes, if you are not turning you are not using your body. Well, you have to hit it with something so you are using your arms. The harder you hit, the tighter you get, the more the arm muscles contract. Totally loosen the arms. Feel your body doing the work. Try this: ua-cam.com/video/j1mS5Ku8Q10/v-deo.html

    I don't really understand these days how people have all this great UA-cam content to help them get a decent golf swing and understand that they can't just cast their arms out at the golf ball and expect it to turn out well. It's good for business, but I bet it's also pretty frustrating to see these people coming in over and over to get lessons from you, Paul, and doing the exact same wrong thing over and over.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому +3

      Because of human nature telling people to hit the ball and there are tons of teachers out there telling people to whack at it with their arms. Yes, it gives me a never ending supply of customers because after 20 years of hitting with the arms and they've thrown their back out, they hit it nowhere and their arms hurt they finally realize that maybe their is another way to do it. Hopefully, my channel explodes and more and more people start doing it. I have been getting amazing results since 1991. It's not difficult. It's different. They just have to try it. Hope they do.

    At the range I notice how all the very good players do what you are teaching Paul, and the poorer players are all practising swinging with their arms.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому

      Exactly. Truly mind boggling how people aren't being taught this. Oh well, I guess it's up to me to get the word out. Then we can all play better golf.
