I have Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors for Switch. I have DW8 Empires for the PC. I am thinking about getting this but I just do not want to get burned out on Warriors games. It's on sale now on the E-Shop for $27.99. So very tempting.
wow.. thats some review. massive knowledge. had to watch it twice to take in everything you said. the only warriors game i played, and own on both wii u and switch..is hyrule. i bloody love it. but.. you truly are a sensai on this series. i love the depth to these games, and anyone who hasnt tried one ..needs too. this looks more in depth again, so i might go for this.
Yeah it’s got a nice layer of depth to it. Don’t get me wrong, you can play on easy mode and pretty much ‘y button’ your way to victory, but from normal mode upwards, you need to use a lot more strategy. Glen
Not sure if you are familiar with SwitchUp's other reviews, but their reviews are very thorough while being concise. They are generally very fair and honest with their videos. You also don't get all the flair that many other review channels add to capture the super childish audience. I don't feel weird watching their channel.
Ok, so it's an adaptation of a adaptation, that's funny, the series never really calls me, but as with any game might pick it up because it's on the switch other than that, not much else to say it's just a warriors game, it's not bad just nothing that pops, but wish a very happy gaming however enjoys it
@@SwitchUpYt 👍 hey, u never got back to me about that question I asked but u probably didn't know what the hell I was talking about. But Anyway If i take my SD card outta my switch it won't let me turn the system on without it? I was just wondering when I buy a new switch will those games be on my SD card or will I have to redownload them. In my data management it says all my games are stored on the card! Idk might be a dumb question...but I wanna know? 😆
I’m assuming that as long as you transfer your account over to your new Switch first and then put the sd card in, it should recognise the games on the card against the ones purchased by the account. Not completely sure though. Glen
I've played Ambition Mode, and I can confirm that it doesn't really add up a lot to the experience but what you can do is buff up your selected weapons through weapon gems obtainable through free mode. So if your weapon has an element that you don't want, through the Reforge function you can take another weapon's element and imbue it to your current weapon. As long as the sacrificial weapon isn't a 5* or 6* of course.
Plus if you hate playing as a character as a whole, you can be lazy and level it up automatically through some other functions locked deep within the mode
Dynasty warriors 1 isn't actually a dynasty warriors game. It's a localization issue as it's called sangoku musou while the hack and slash games are shin sangoku musou. Dw8 is actually called shun sangoku musou 7 outside the west
So at the time of this post this complete DW8 port is currently available on the eshop as part of the Black Friday sale from 40 USD down to 28 USD until December 4. Wondering if now at that price its worth it.
When I bought this game on Switch and started it up, I got a message saying that I had unlocked some costumes because I had Warriors Orochi 4 save data (not surprising, since that was revealed when the port was announced)... and then I got messages saying that I could unlock more costumes if I had save data of Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires, Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada, and Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate. Those three games were ported to the Switch in 2017, but they were Japan-only releases. Did you get those messages too, and do you think it might be a sign that those three Switch ports will eventually get released outside of Japan?
It’s either just a direct translation of something irrelevant to us as those games aren’t out over here or it may well be a sign of further ports to come. Glen
I buy Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends - Definitive Edition on the Nintendo Switch But in game no have all Dlc costume any charecter I thought the dw3-6 costumes (among others) were included? Where are they? Please Help me
Hi Glen, in terms of being out for 5 years and even on PS3 and Xbox 360 definitely raises issues over value, most certainly if you’ve played before. However, I myself am not really into this but as someone who never played, I think it’s certainly got enough content to justify the price
I bought this game Yesterday because of the eShop sale here in Europe (27.99€) i realised that i've play every DW8 at first it was on PS3, PS Vita & PS4 version. But the Switch version is the best because all of the DLC is here and this is the smooth Musou i've ever play on Switch. 🤯 Tbh i never bought DLC before so playing this version it's like a i play a new DW especially because i was so disappoint by the "9/Empires" so go buying this one if u like musou is the better version - (for 40 is nothing + the game is longer than before! is worth it!)
Well if anything i wanted DW8 Empires getting localized for Switch since it is already on Switch in Japan and Empires were my favorite ver of any dynasty warriors.
@@SwitchUpYt Dynasty warriors 8 Empires have you build your own adventure, while adding in Kingdom management with 8 new type of moveset plus one new strategist character.
@@SwitchUpYt could easily see them doing spin off games for several different series ramping up the fan service and putting this type of game back on the map.
Still never played a Warriors game. I think they look like a lot of fun but would get old quick for me. I can't imagine playing this for hundreds of hours, but it's great the content is there for those who do love it that much. Thanks Glen, happy New Year!
No harm in trying. Over the past fifteen years, I must have spent hundreds of hours info each of the many Musou-titles. First one that made me like the concept? Dynasty Warriors 3 on Xbox. Yes, even without the horrible voice acting at the time.
Honestly i asked myself the same thing too. But I got Xtreme legends because it reminded me of dynasty warriors 4. The goat of the series. It’s a really good game to kill time. It’s just hack and slash and super repetitive but somehow it brings the inner child out of me. It doesn’t take a lot of skill unless u play on harder difficulties. You can challenge others and try to beat their scores online, or try to rush and clear certain times(personal records). Xtreme legends offers so many game modes and it’s really to just challenge yourself if you think about it. At least that’s how I see it for such a simplistic game.
Crazy that this series has been around so long. Many find memories in ps2. Unfortunately these types of games don't hold my interest long enough. If I get the urge to play I'll just dust off my hyrule or fire emblem warriors games. Great review as always
This game seriously suffers from a lack of the "ROLL" function like in FeW and HW. Without the roll combat is SO much slower and not as much fun. I don't hate the game. It has a decent amount of content but combat is a serious step down from those other games I mentioned.
@@SwitchUpYt That's a really good explanation. Although Warriors Orochi 4 is missing it too and it's a shame because I LOVE the mythology in that game but I feel like playing after an hour is a chore.
There is dodge function, it's embed to characters with the Dash or Dive affinity, where if you press space you can jump mid-attack (dash) or backstep to avoid combo (dive)
77%? I’ll take it. Especially considering i enjoy DW8 on my ps3, to have it on my witch would make for a good addition to my choices of witch games. Plus since i only have the original DW8 on my ps3, getting it on my switch would probably be an upgrade.
Time to play catchup on the SwitchUp vids. Always awesome job. Muso are just not my bag. I want it to be but I'm afraid after 8bmainline and multitude of offshoots it's just not in the cards for me. Alas. Haha
Nice review that explains the gameplay well. Too bad that the story doesn't actually reflect Chinese history or the novel it's taken from properly. The developers obviously have their own favourites and they are very happy to put down other characters to make their favourites look good. I've played many of these games since I'm a history fan, and it really angers me to see particular characters getting bashed online because of these games. The gameplay isn't particularly great IMO either. It is repetitive and you're going to be running around the map according to instructions, just so that a door opens so you can enter the next area. Considering how badly the story is written, I don't recommend it.
I think sometimes it's a bit too much and I've seen players talk about these characters as if the game is actually history 😅 Besides that it's good as a game to relieve stress I think.
Yeah I can see that but I wouldn’t say it’s a good representation of the book either. I think particularly the latter part of the story is very rude and poorly represented. It just feels like to me that the developers don’t even care about what the novel is trying to say and hating on traditional Chinese values. Maybe I’m taking it a bit too seriously, but still they can do a much better job on representing the book if they cared enough I think 😅 And sorry I replied from someone else's account by mistake.
Yeah I guess that's why it's bad IMO, because of trying to mix these things it doesn't give a proper idea of what's happened, or presents the cultures and values of the period properly. And I don't think the person who wrote the story is even thinking from the perspective of the characters. It's like judging then from a completely different set of values and calling people from a different culture like 2000 years ago stupid because they are following the values at that time. Anyway I should shut up, just saying that this isn't history by any means and don't use it to learn about Chinese culture and history 😅
I get so sick of these sorts of games sadly, the only 2 I’ve ever stuck with for longer than an hour are the 2 Nintendo Musou’s. Just not my sort of game sadly which is weird as I love grinds and beat em up’s, lol.
I play these games mostly when I just need a quick burst of action. Play a map or two, level up a character, do a little upgrading, then I put it down. I always come back to them though. They usually have a ton of content too so, playing the way I do, they last a very long time.
I’m so disappointed. I loved DW growing up and and was one of my absolute favorites as a kid. I recently picked up Warriors Orochi but the game mechanics were awful. It felt like I was controlling a stick figure that had no concepts of gravity and weight when running. The colors were awfully bland, dark and muddy. And the lighting was awful. Compared to the other games I’ve been enjoying on the switch which are gorgeous in color (and often over saturated I’ll admit) WO just couldn’t keep me interested or happy. It makes me nervous to even give DW 8 a shot. I’m hoping Koei puts more effort to their games to keep up with the new kids on the switch, because I can’t see why anyone besides hardcore fans would pick this up and that’s coming from someone who loved this series until the wheels literally fell off. Besides that great review of the game!
@@SwitchUpYt Well they made it open world with nothing to do, They removed half of the fighting styles, And I think they added micro transactions. And that's just what I can remember off top of my head.
One question. In Fire Emblem Warriors, people yell at me constantly when someone is in trouble, or a fort is about to fall. This made it very easy to keep track of what was going on, and I could focus almost entirely on the actual combat, rather than paying attention to what was going on "in the background". I later tried Hyrule Warriors on Switch, and while it' a better game in many ways, there are no voice overs in combat. That means all the important thins like if a character was a in trouble or a fort was about to fall, was all hidden in the dialogue text in the lower left of the screen. But this is also where we get the character dialogue, story and all that, so the vital information could be buried in a sea of text, and I sometimes didn't get it before it was too late. This quite literaly broke the game to me. "Zelda's in trouble!" Yeah, that was five minutes ago, and she's already dead... thanks for catching up... Or I race across half the map, only to find her standing all alone in a fortress, bored out of her mind. WTF? How is DW8 in this regard? I'm interested in it, but I really want voice overs like in Fire Emblem Warriors. I know it sounds like a tiny detail on paper, but it's actually one of the most important things I can think of in a game like this. With so much going on all at once, it's vital that I get to know the stuff I need to know ASAP, and preferably without taking my eyes away from the screen.
I think the talking is more for objectives and the warnings about people in trouble text based. I just played a bit to try and refresh my memory and (typically) no one got into trouble. Glen
DW is my 3rd favorite game series ever just behind legend of zelda and kingdom hearts. Ihave owned and played all of them to completion! I love the history behind the game like the Romance of the 3 kingdoms and Han Dynasty. I am still playing Warriors Orochi 4, but i look forward to this for the Switch even though I played thoroughly on ps4. Glad switch is getting this one over DW 9 that open world system just didnt work for the DW series to me. Your cursor on the map when in battle is green, enemies red, and allies blue. Color blindness could surely hurt deciphering the map. DW 8 vs. Warriors Orochi 4 DW allows you to enjoy the overall battle on a larger scale more and let's you go about the battle more how you strategize. Also, usually in battle it is up to you if you want to do x or y sudden mid battle missions and whether you do or dont do x or y they affect the next mission in different ways like maybe you get reinforcements that you saved from a previous battle or you do not bc you did not save them. it is up to you though. Warrior Orochi, Samurai Warriors, even Hyrule Warrior i like a lot less bc all give you sub missions before and during battle often time sensitive/vital to completing immediately, so you are forced to drop everything and do what just popped up or else you fail. They more guide you through the battle over letting you be the strategist. That is why I like DW games more.

I remember my high school friend playing this series on PS2 (or maybe a game just like it) all the time. It was a game I could never get into or appreciate. But nonetheless, this is a great review.
I have Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors for Switch. I have DW8 Empires for the PC. I am thinking about getting this but I just do not want to get burned out on Warriors games. It's on sale now on the E-Shop for $27.99. So very tempting.
@@ChinDogToshi Yeah I got it. I enjoy it. Feels a little more awkward than Hyrule and Fire Emblem but still rather nice.
wow.. thats some review. massive knowledge. had to watch it twice to take in everything you said.
the only warriors game i played, and own on both wii u and switch..is hyrule. i bloody love it. but.. you truly are a sensai on this series. i love the depth to these games, and anyone who hasnt tried one ..needs too.
this looks more in depth again, so i might go for this.

Ok, so it's an adaptation of a adaptation, that's funny, the series never really calls me, but as with any game might pick it up because it's on the switch other than that, not much else to say it's just a warriors game, it's not bad just nothing that pops, but wish a very happy gaming however enjoys it
Yeah, they can be quite repetitive so they don’t appeal to everybody. Glen
If Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires is announced for the Switch, I'll pre order it ASAP. Love the Empire series of DW!
The gameplay is the most important not the cutscenes.

Glen
@@SwitchUpYt thanks a lot...now I just gotta remember my email address lol
I just bought this. Looking forward to playing it for hundreds of hours.
Just a question.... In this version it's possible to fusion weapons? Because it's not available that option in ambition mode...mhelp?
I miss the versus mode and caw. I wish everyone has their own unique weapon.
Does ambition mode offer a lot of replayability in comparison to Hyrule Warrior's adventure mode?
I haven’t played enough of it to make a fair comparison, sorry.
Ik people still enjoy this type of game but im fine with fire emblem warriors still play it from time to time. :) great review thanks for the review
Thank you. Glen
Funny how jumping without walls is possible here, but not in age of calamity.
Now to wait for Samurai Warriors 4-II
So does this include Empires aswell? Or is it just Dynasty Warriors 8 and Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends. Just wanted to ask.
Glen
The games are based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, which is based largely on the records.
Anyone ever play Lu Bu's final Hypothetical route battle? the background music isn't just any song it's also the theme song in the opening sequence.

You have to beat one of the story modes, then every single DLC costume will unlock
I got this game only because of the nostalgia from playing DW4 on the xbox. I wish they still had the bodyguards that was so fucking cool
I still play this game on my PS4 nowadays.
Does this have a Gauntlet like mode?
Hi Glen, in terms of being out for 5 years and even on PS3 and Xbox 360 definitely raises issues over value, most certainly if you’ve played before. However, I myself am not really into this but as someone who never played, I think it’s certainly got enough content to justify the price
I bought this game Yesterday because of the eShop sale here in Europe (27.99€)
i realised that i've play every DW8 at first it was on PS3, PS Vita & PS4 version.
But the Switch version is the best because all of the DLC is here and this is the smooth Musou i've ever play on Switch. 🤯
Tbh i never bought DLC before so playing this version it's like a i play a new DW especially because i was so disappoint by the "9/Empires" so go buying this one if u like musou is the better version

(for 40 is nothing + the game is longer than before! is worth it!)
Does anyone know if there'll be a cartridge version? I'd rather have a physical copy.
I think the physical version is only in Japan I'm afraid. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt Shame, thanks for the info.
Does the physical release have the English localisation?
I don’t believe so. Glen
Well if anything i wanted DW8 Empires getting localized for Switch since it is already on Switch in Japan and Empires were my favorite ver of any dynasty warriors.
They may still bring it over yet. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt Dynasty warriors 8 Empires have you build your own adventure, while adding in Kingdom management with 8 new type of moveset plus one new strategist character.

I already finished this countless times in my psvita and dang why would I buy a switch to play this again when the graphics is the same as my psvita
Still never played a Warriors game. I think they look like a lot of fun but would get old quick for me. I can't imagine playing this for hundreds of hours, but it's great the content is there for those who do love it that much. Thanks Glen, happy New Year!
Happy new year to you too mate. Glen
I need to play fire emblem warriors. Have had it for ages but not tried it yet. Glen
I already played this on my Vita, so I'm not too anxious getting it. I might double dip if there is a sale.
This game seriously suffers from a lack of the "ROLL" function like in FeW and HW. Without the roll combat is SO much slower and not as much fun.
I don't hate the game. It has a decent amount of content but combat is a serious step down from those other games I mentioned.
I guess although it’s a newer release, it being a port of an older game means it has some of those newer features missing. Glen
Would I enjoy this game if I enjoyed Hyrule Warriors a lot? Or is this not similar to it?
It's similar, yes
I love nintendo switch right now because many 3rd party game like bioshock and others. Especially i played dynasty warriors 8 on ps3
77%? I’ll take it. Especially considering i enjoy DW8 on my ps3, to have it on my witch would make for a good addition to my choices of witch games. Plus since i only have the original DW8 on my ps3, getting it on my switch would probably be an upgrade.
The only sour spot is no physical version, even in Japan. Nearly 16GB is a lot to download, especially on Switch.

Yeah, they certainly take some historic liberties that’s for sure. Glen
Anyway I should shut up, just saying that this isn't history by any means and don't use it to learn about Chinese culture and history 😅
will they put 8 Empires on the switch too?
I think 8 empires is out in Japan on the Switch so they might bring it over. Glen
I sadly already bought the ps4 version
I just don’t have the memory.... but I’d definitely get it if I had 14 GB
I get so sick of these sorts of games sadly, the only 2 I’ve ever stuck with for longer than an hour are the 2 Nintendo Musou’s. Just not my sort of game sadly which is weird as I love grinds and beat em up’s, lol.
They can get repetitive. I tend to spread my sessions out so as to not get too fatigued with them. Glen
I play these games mostly when I just need a quick burst of action. Play a map or two, level up a character, do a little upgrading, then I put it down. I always come back to them though. They usually have a ton of content too so, playing the way I do, they last a very long time.
I like these games so much that I play for hours and don't get bored.
You make a good point about the lack of weight and gravity when running/jumping. There is still an element of that in the game I’m afraid. Glen
DW8 is released before WO4 so you're probably in good hands
I think it's safe to say this game is better than DW9
What did they do to make 9 so bad? I haven’t played it. Glen
If DW6 is better than 9... then yes every other DW game is better and 6 is the 2nd worst
@@SwitchUpYt

I know right.
Well anyway I'm downloading the game now.

Glen
@@SwitchUpYt Thanks. I think I'll give it a try. :-)
DW 8 vs. Warriors Orochi 4
DW allows you to enjoy the overall battle on a larger scale more and let's you go about the battle more how you strategize.
