      Thanks for sharing your experience. It's unfortunate to hear about the difficulties you faced with the timber. As we work with natural materials, there can indeed be variations and imperfections like bending and twisting. But that's part of the charm and challenge of these projects. I hope your cabin is now serving you well, and that your next project goes more smoothly! Thanks for watching! 🤓👊🏼

    Hi, great video but have a few questions as have a rhine 4x3m to build next week. I assume its 11mm osb with 25mm insulation (celotex/recticel/kingspan etc), I have installed couple of these now and pergola's for customers and just wondering why you put the damp proof membrane on 1st after roof boards?, instructions show membrane going on last before the shingles or felt. I do it this way to protrect the osb as any moisture getting in through the felt or failed felt will ruin the osb - Ive had this happen before. I also prefer to nail felt then lap over it with next sheet and use felt lap adhesive - dont trust nailing into felt, ok for sheds but not for an expensive cabin. Felt shingles are a better option as well, more expensive but look nicer and last longer. Cheers!

    • @lifeofjonboy
      @lifeofjonboy  7 місяців тому

      Hey! Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your experience with building rhine structures. Your questions are spot-on! I answered a lot of questions in tis video: ua-cam.com/video/SgZZLZ8xSiw/v-deo.htmlsi=L6wORyOaIIlaybru
      I opted for damp proof membrane early in the process to add an extra layer of protection during the construction phase. However, your approach of placing it just before the shingles makes a lot of sense, especially for long-term OSB protection. Your method with felt lap adhesive also adds an extra layer of security, which is a smart choice for a durable build.
      Felt shingles are indeed a fantastic option for both aesthetics and longevity. Your insights are valuable, and I appreciate you sharing your tips. Best of luck with your upcoming 4x3m project! If you have more questions, feel free to reach out. Cheers! 🛠️🏡

    When it comes to the roof. Did you just lay insulation. Use screws through the the joists? Then board it and screw again or is this all floating? I’m bit confused as at this stage with mine.
    Tuin say to fix through the insulation but if I do surely this creates a thermal bridge and then damages the membrane?

    Hi Jon, did you put your floor bearers straight onto the concrete foundation, or have you put a membrane in between, or coated the bottom of the bearers? Lots of different trains of thought on this point so just curious whether or not you had these queries in your mind when you came to do your build....Cheers pal.

    • @lifeofjonboy
      @lifeofjonboy  Рік тому

      Good question! There is no way to stop twisting/bowing but once all the timbers are locked together its a pretty solid structure and theres not a lot of chance that you would get any noticeable twisting etc. Thanks for watching! 🤙🏼

    Hi Jon, great series, a big help, thank you! Just ordered mine and I’m planning on saving by doing the insulation myself. If you get time could you let me know where you got the insulation clips for the floor from please, or how you held yours in place. What size insulation did you use in the roof and which boards did you choose to go on top of the insulation. Finally, what did you use to secure your roof insulation and boards please? Thanks in advance. Jamie

    • @lifeofjonboy
      @lifeofjonboy  Рік тому +3

      Ah man you're the best thank you! Appreciate you watching, means a lot! Pleased you've ordered yours. I didn't use any clips for the insulation on the floor. I just placed some off cuts of timber on the floor and sat the insulation on that just so it gave that half inch gap for air flow so if there was any water that went under the cabin the insulation wouldn't be sat in it.
      All the sizes of the insulation used I went though in this Q&A video; ua-cam.com/video/SgZZLZ8xSiw/v-deo.html
      Roof insulation was just placed on the roof then when the OSB was placed on top of that, I then screwed this own through all the way to the roof tongue & grove and sandwiched the insulation in between.
      Hope that helps Jamie. Reach out with any other questions, happy to help where I can. 😎👊🏼

    Great video!! Thanks! Quick question, what holds the floor bearers together? Does the bottom row of logs fix to the bearers? I’m considering building the Avon on a timber frame and I’m trying to work out if I can build straight onto the floor frame or if I’ll need to put some osb on top of the frame and build on that….if any of that makes sense😊

    • @lifeofjonboy
      @lifeofjonboy  10 місяців тому

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The floor bearers are typically held together using the bottom row of logs usually fixes directly to the bearers. You can definitely build straight onto the floor frame, which is what I did but adding a layer of OSB can provide some extra stability and a smooth surface to work on. Hope that helps and good luck with building the Avon! 👊🏼

    • @lifeofjonboy
      @lifeofjonboy  Рік тому

      Shouldn't cause any issues no. I trimmed mine at the base leaving a 3-5mm gap between the concrete and the timber trim. It allowed for ventilation but kept animals away. I didn't have any issues. Good luck with the build and thanks for watching! 😎🤙🏼
